BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Braddock was once a talented Brewers relieving prospect who profiled as a potential late-inning type. HIPAA laws prevent us from knowing the whole story, but he was released last May. There were whispers of personal issues, sleep disorder, anxiety, and tardiness, among other off-field issues that led to the Brewers and Braddock parting ways. He was once very gifted, with a high-rising, 93-mph heater and a biting slider, so the potential exists for him to help the Orioles if other issues are behind him.
2012 Braddock joins Johannes Brahms among famous people with a sleep disorder. He was working on moving beyond a Study For the Left Hand (aka "LOOGY"), but his medical condition cost him some velocity on both fastball and slider. He's hoping it was just a Tragic Overture to a fine career as a setup man, but there are many unknowns with the disease.
2011 Braddock’s conversion to relief has worked wonders for his career, transforming him from inconsistent injury risk to major-league bullpen cog in just 18 months. The lefty has always missed bats with his mid-90s heat and wipe-out slider, but after a one-year hiatus, walks again featured prominently on the menu. Lefties managed a mere .151/.270/.170 line against him, though right-handers knocked him around—he’ll need to keep his slider down in the zone to avoid being painted with the LOOGY brush. The Brewers hope he can step into a prominent set-up role this year, and if he can knock his walk rate down a little, he’ll more than earn his keep.
2010 A former starter converted to relief due to recurrent injuries, Braddock has always been able to miss bats with his mid-90s fastball and nasty slider. The move to the pen has worked miracles with his command, as his walk rate plummeted and he posted a gaudy strikeout-to-walk ratio, but the beefy lefty continues to miss time with assorted ailments. If he can stay healthy and continue to eschew the base on balls, Braddock could begin a lengthy and productive stay in the Milwaukee pen before the season is out.
2009 The grandson of “Cinderella Man” boxer Jim Braddock was dogged by arm troubles for the second year in a row, so he was kept on a short leash, pitching out of the bullpen in August after he returned from the DL. He had no problem missing bats in either role, but his walk rate was, shall we say, extreme. Braddock’s fastball only sits in the low 90s, but his delivery is sneaky fast and his slider is sharp. Obviously, he’ll need to improve his command as he jumps to Double-A, but the stuff is there.
2008 The grandson of "Cinderella Man" boxer Jim Braddock, Zach is an 18th-round draft-and-follow from 2005 who underwent Tommy John surgery while still in high school. Young Braddock was fashioning a storybook season of his own when shoulder tendonitis derailed him in June. Nonetheless, his projectable body and the sinking action on his low-90s fastball make him a sleeper worth following.

DateQuestionAnswer
2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Ben What are the chances that Zach Braddock will be closing this year or next? Thanks
(Ed from Cranford, NJ)
I guess that depends on the chances that John Axford won't be closing this year or next. Here's what we said on that subject in this year's annual:

"Relievers with walk rates that high tend to lose their grip on the closer reins as managers grow frustrated with their self-inflicted jams. While it’s possible that Axford has developed a newfound ability to find the strike zone and will spend the next half-decade closing games at Miller Park, it’s just as likely that Brewers fans will wake up one morning to discover that yesterday’s Rollie Fingers has morphed into today’s Derrick Turnbow."

I don't think Axford is about to enter Turnbow territory, but there are certainly unlikelier closer candidates than Braddock. His talents would be wasted in the bullpen, though: with a name like that, he really should've been a cowboy or a spaceship captain. (Ben Lindbergh)
