YearComment
2011 Either Bonser has never quite recovered from 2009 shoulder surgery, or he was simply never that good in the first place. His fastball, slider, and changeup all rank as average on the scouting scale, which is enough to convince teams that they can reap some value from him, but his pitches are rarely all available on the same night, leaving both his arsenal and his potential limited. Now entering the have-arm-will-travel portion of his baseball journey, he's one of those players who'll get a lifetime pass to Triple-A, where he'll secretly root for an injury stack to grant him another shot at The Show. After bouncing from Boston to Oakland last year, he hooked on with the Mets.
2010 After he missed all of 2009 recovering from shoulder surgery, Boof Bonser was designated for assignment before the Twins dealt him to the Red Sox for marginal minor-leaguer Chris Province.
2009 Last year in this space, we pointed out that when right-handed hitters put the ball in play against Bonser '07, they hit only .231, whereas left-handers had a crazy-high .401 safety rate. The weirdness continued in 2008, with lefties hitting .374 on balls in play but righties batting only .287. The league average figures for righty-on-righty action were .297, .307 for lefty hitters vs. righty pitchers. Roughly the same rates applied in 2007, so as Bob Dylan told Mr. Jones, something is happening here. It seems that lefties see Bonser very well. Paradoxically, he strikes them out more often than he does right-handers, but when they make contact they do so with vigor, batting .316/.375/.516. Righties have a harder time of it, and are far less likely to hit the ball safely, or for extra bases when they do, or even to draw a walk. Now, it could be we have a chicken-and-egg problem, and the disparity is wholly the fault of the defense, but there's little evidence of that. The upshot of it all is that the move to the pen was exactly the wrong way to handle Bonser, assuming the Twins should have kept using him at all. He pitched better as a starter, and the likely reason is that the killer lefties were washed out by the larger population of right-handed hitters. In a relief role, he was more vulnerable to concentrated doses of lefty lightning. There's never been a man more desperately in need of a cut fastball than Boof.
2008 Here's an analytical mystery. In 2006, Bonser had no platoon split of note. In 2007, his strikeout and walk rates were essentially the same against both lefties and righties, and his home-run rate was slightly worse against lefties, but still not troublesome. However, when lefties put the ball in play against him, they hit .401, while righties hit only .231. That kind of BABIP split is out of context with the rest of his line and cries out for an explanation better than "randomness." The Twins didn't have a dramatically better defense on one side of the field, so that's not the answer. One facet of the defense-independent pitching theory is that pitchers who do not have a bare minimum of ability to suppress hits on balls in play wash out either in the minors or quickly upon reaching the majors. Bonser held major league lefties to a .289 BABIP in a much smaller sample 2006, but if it turns out that he either can't or has lost his ability to keep lefties from getting hits, he's not going to last long.
2007 Bonser was filling in here and there before taking over Liriano`s rotation spot at the end of the year. He pitched well enough to start Game Two of the ALDS and has pretty much guaranteed a spot for himself in the rotation on Opening Day. He`s a solid all-around pitcher--his fastball, curveball, changeup, and control are all pretty good--but he lacks that one swing-and-miss offering that would allow us to project him as a star. He also has some troubles with the long ball, but there`s no reason he can`t be a solid innings-eater for a long time. Last time we looked, those guys make $10 million a year, so it`s nice work if you can get it.
2006 With Nathan closing and Liriano among baseball`s best prospects, a man named Boof has to settle for being the other guy in the Pierzynski heist. He`s slowly becoming a more well-rounded pitching prospect, showing better durability while improving his breaking pitches and a changeup to complement low 90s velocity. Boof`s problem is whether or not there`s room for him in a big league rotation that will already have both Baker and Francisco Liriano competing for the last rotation slot.
2005 There's just something about that name that conjures up images of an army of moderately psyched surf dudes, drunk on the inspirations of beach blanket bushido, attacking waves with a suicidal desperation. Anyway, Bonser is still learning how to locate his fastball, but he struggles with command of all four pitches that he can occasionally throw for strikes. He got off to a slow start, but eventually put together an adequate season. He'll get a polite look at the fifth spot in the rotation, but he can use time at Triple-A to show that he's consolidated the gains he made in the second half.

2009-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)What about the Twins trading garbage for Joe Nathan, Liriano and AJ Pierzynski? That was a pretty bad trade if memory serves.
(bctowns from Tradesville, USA)
I think you mean trading Pierzynski for Nathan, Liriano and Boof Bonser. Also in the picture, but tempered by Liriano's crash and burn and Bonser's injuries and subsequent suckitude. Nathan is statistically the equal of Mariano over the past six years, minus the postseason success. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-08-15 15:00:00 (link to chat)How crazy are the Mariners for pulling back Washburn because Minnesota was 'only' offering Boof Bonser?!
(Aaron from YYZ)
You can take the Bavasi out of the ballclub, but not the Bavasi-ism, I guess. There's something sort of sad about a team that overvalues its mediocrities, but it also explains a lot about how they got there. (Christina Kahrl)
