Definition of multi-year splits

BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 A stunningly effective find, Blanco quietly had one of the best seasons among part-time players in the entire league in 2015. Splitting time mostly between second and third base, the eight-year vet has emerged in Philadelphia after spending the full 2012 season in Triple-A and 2013 out of American pro ball entirely, casually putting up career-best offensive numbers in the meantime. His 261 plate appearances in 2015 were also a career high, his playing time aided by some conveniently untimely injuries, first to Maikel Franco, then to Cesar Hernandez. Blanco certainly made the most of the opportunity, and seems destined to find more time in the majors in 2016. He may just be depth in the end, but his resurgence has been nothing short of impressive nonetheless.
2015 After a three-year hiatus from this book, Andres Blanco returns just long enough for us to point out how unbelievably bad the Phillies bench was. Keep reading!
2011 When an ankle injury put Ian Kinsler on the shelf during spring training, the Rangers looked for an in-house replacementósomeone who could not only provide solid defense at second base, but keep pitchers honest at the plate. Upon realizing that the in-house options were Esteban German and Joaquin Arias, the Rangers smartly acquired Andres Blanco from the Cubs. Known for his glove, Blanco didnít disappoint, forming a solid all-Venezuelan double-play team with Andrus and showing versatility by filling in at shortstop and third base. On offense, the switch-hitter started the season very slowly, struggling to make hard contact from both sides of the plate. After Kinslerís return, Blanco settled into his utility role and eventually found his stroke at the plate, hitting over .300 in the second half of the season. Blanco should be a solid-but-unspectacular utilityman going forward, and with his pre-arbitration price tag, an affordable player to have on the roster.
2010 Defense isn't just Blanco's calling card, it's his meal-ticket, lifeline, and fairy godmother rolled into one. Donít let two good months in Des Moines fool youóBlancoís career minor-league line of .256/.318/.326 tells you all you need to know about his bat, but in the field heís as slick and nimble as they come on either side of the bag. A contender like the Cubs will gladly use him as a defensive backup in their middle infield, but someday Blancoís glove could earn him a full-time job helping boost the confidence of a rebuilding teamís young rotation.
2007 Blanco still can`t hit, not that such a thing would disqualify him from unseating Angel Berroa at shortstop. Unlike Berroa, he can at least field his position with some semblance of competence. Still, any player with a career .314 slugging average in the majors (and a .308 slugging average in the minors) is part of the problem, not the solution. A torn labrum suffered on a check swing late in the year should keep Blanco out for at least part of the season, allowing Berroa to hold on without a major challenge in the early going.
2006 Blanco isn`t much of a hitter. He isn`t even a quark of a hitter; his career slugging average in the minor leagues is .303. But he`s the kind of shortstop that scouts believe could contend for multiple Gold Gloves during in his career. So what do you do with a young shortstop who`s all glove and no bat? If you`re the Royals, you move him to second base during a September call-up, where his defensive skills are less valuable and his offensive inadequacies are more glaring. The signing of Grudzielanek allows Blanco to stay in the minors, and at shortstop, which is the silver lining on an otherwise very cloudy transaction.
2005 As we wrote last year, Blanco is about as good a prospect as you can be without any ability to actually hit. He struggled to post a .300 OBP in Double-A last year, but is still one of the players most sought after in trade talks with the Royals, for two obvious reasons: glovework and age. As he showed in his brief big league auditions, Blanco has the agility and smoothness to be one of the game's best defensive shortstops. His inability to hit becomes a less damning when you consider he was only 20 years old last season; they're hoping he's a future Cesar Izturis.
2004 Though you'd never guess it from the numbers above, Blanco is widely considered one of the Royals' best prospects. In reality, he's about as good as a prospect can be without actually hitting; he played the entire season in the Caroline League at age 19, he has pretty good plate discipline, and his defensive tools are highly regarded. If he can take on a steady growth curve with the bat, he might be a player someday. With Berroa entrenched at shortstop for the next five years, the Royals can afford to wait and see.
