2012 Positional flexibility and a few good plate appearances at Syracuse mean it's not time to say Brian Bixler's career stops here, but he's strictly filler and will bide his time at Triple-A again.
2010 If Bixler weren't such a likeable fellow, he might have a nickname like the Sultan of Strikeouts or the Wizard of Whiffs, because he has struck out an amazing 62 times in 166 major-league plate appearances over the past two seasons. If you're going to strike out more often than Mark Reynolds, you'd at least better hit home runs like Reynolds, but Bixler clearly doesn't have anything like that kind of power. The Pirates have given up on the idea of Bixler becoming an everyday shortstop in the majors, but feel he has potential value as a utilityman. Thus, he began playing some center field late last season at Indianapolis to add versatility, but there may be no space for him with the signing of Bobby Crosby.
2009 Bixler has been a prospect of at least some note since being the Pirates' second-round pick in 2004, but he was terribly exposed in his first taste of the major leagues, overpowered at the plate by good fastballs and continually chasing sliders in the dirt. As a result, he struck out far too much for a player who relies on speed and has minimal power. Bixler did play good defense after a shaky start, but the trouble at the plate suggests his future lies among not among the starting shortstops, but with the middle infield reserves.
2008 A second-round draft pick out of Eastern Michigan in 2004, Bixler has been living up to his pedigree more with each passing year and was among the top shortstops in the International League last season. Bixler has good speed and plays solid defense, but he continually posts high strikeout numbers, leading to concern that major league pitchers could have their way with him. With Jack Wilson staying in Pittsburgh, Bixler is likely headed back to Triple-A to start the season. At his age, it's likely that he is what he is.
2007 A decent hitter with good speed, Bixler impressed at Lynchburg and carried on in the same vein after a promotion to Altoona in the Eastern League. He`s 24 now, so it`s time for him to take Triple-A by storm and start that major league career sooner rather than later. A slide over to second base seems inevitable at this point, especially with Brent Lillibridge in the van.

(max from DC)
No and with his inability to make remotely consistent contact in the majors, I can't even see him fashioning a career as a utility player. (John Perrotto)
