2011 The Reds thought little enough of his work in the second half of 2009 to banish Wladimir Balentien to Louisville for the entirety of 2010, where the athletic righty turned in the best minor-league performance of his career. Rather than spend another season wondering what the big club sees in Jonny Gomes, he took his act to Japan in exchange for some bigger numbers, both on the field and in his bank account.
2010 A 25-year-old corner outfield prospect with big-time power and improving plate discipline but a few too many holes in his swing, the hot-headed Balentien wore out his welcome with the new Mariners administration alarmingly quickly. Just 130 games into his major-league career, he was designated for assignment and flipped to the Reds for a minor-league reliever who was subsequently lost on waivers after the season. True, Balentien hit just .209/.260/.359 in those 130 games with the Mís, but he perked up upon arrival in the much friendlier hitting environment in Cincinnati, and should be in the mix for the left-field job in camp.
2009 Pitchers exploited Balentien's lack of plate discipline in his first extended taste of the major leagues last season, continually enticing him to chase pitches out of the strike zone. A lack of patience has long been Balentien's bugaboo, but his Isolated Discipline recouped some of its '07 losses in Tacoma last season, while his power reached heights unseen since his romp through the AFL in 2003. Despite his struggles in the majors, he remains a safe long-term play, as well as a better bet for short-term success than a replacement Wilkerson. Balentien's struggles against righties in Seattle aren't reflective of his minor league splits, but when coupled with his defensive inadequacies, make Endy Chavez the perfect caddy for the presumptive Opening Day left fielder.
2008 Balentien is unlikely to ever displace Curacao's favorite baseball-playing son-by the time Andruw Jones was his age, he had already hit 80 major league homers and played in two World Series-but he's certainly made a case that he's ready to play in the big leagues. Last year, he gave back some of the gains in plate discipline that he made in 2006, but his overall game continued to improve, this time with a substantial reduction in his strikeout rate. It remains to be seen if the team will clear some of its first-base/outfield logjam to make room for him.
2007 Balentien has plus power, good defense, and decent speed, but he`s a big whiffer, with 442 strikeouts in 380 minor league games. Even if he has what it takes to make it to the majors as a Three True Outcomes-type, it`s doubtful that there would be a worse environment for him than strikeout-magnifying, righty-unfriendly Safeco Field. It will be interesting to see if his newfound plate discipline--Balentien`s 70 walks at San Antonio last season nearly doubled his career total--holds up in Triple-A. All four PECOTA comparables above were hyped prospects whose careers stalled.
2006 The California League sharply inflates offense, causing hitting prospects to be overrated and pitching prospects to be underrated. Balentien may appear to be the best power prospect in the Mariner system by virtue of his 71 extra-base hits last year, but his translated lines tell you there`s a lot of air in those numbers. He has raw talent--his power was evident at Wisconsin in `04--but Balentien`s efforts at Double-A San Antonio and beyond will tell us how good he is likely to be.
2005 In Wisconsin, over 40% of Balentien's hits were for extra bases; 20% went over the fences. That's crazy. But minor league hitters with massive strikeout problems can be devoured by strikeouts as they move up the system, and Balentien struck out in 30% of his at-bats at the same level. He's young and talented, so he's got lots of time.

(Jeff Clement from Tacoma)
56 plate appearances? Hardly. The Mariners looked as though they were doing a smart thing by bringing up Clement and Wladimir Balentien two and a half weeks ago and mothballing DH Jose Vidro. But the offense hasn't risen from the dead; they're scoring 3.2 runs per game this month, and rather than wait things out, they've decided to panic by shuffling the deck chairs. The nice thing about that it that it probably won't help very much, so I expect to see Clement back before too long because Bill Bavasi won't be able to leave anything alone. (Jay Jaffe)
