What do you see this offseason for the O's?
Rangers or Giants? (McNulty from Baltimore) | Thanks McNulty, the compliment's appreciated. I know that I love writing about individual games, and maybe it was early exposure to Okrent's "Nine Innings," but then I think using a game as a vehicle for shuttling between macro and micro theme-wise is interesting in itself. And the stuff that Matt and Eric and the rest of the team have been bringing to the table has been an enhancement I've appreciated as much as the audience.
For the O's... well, hopefully some learning from the mistakes of the recent past. Garrett Atkins was a few million they could have more usefully invested in inner-city baseball, because that would have done more to earn or retain fans than one broke-bat ex-Rockie. "Stay the course" isn't much consolation, though, but with Showalter skippering the squad, I'm more interested to see who he decides has value from among the talent they have on hand. If there's a FA I'd like to see them pursue, it's J.J. Hardy, because they shouldn't settle for the likes of Izturis this time around. (Christina Kahrl) |

I know they won't always be this bad, but realistically, when is the earliest they could contend? Last year pundits thought it was 2011/2012, but now that seems ridiculous. Will I have to wait until a salary cap is implemented or Angelos sells the team? (Dan from Maryland) | This has been pretty much a lost year, as just about all of the key youngsters on whom the Orioles' future hinges has taken a step backwards - Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman... In retrospect, I think the team waited too long to pull the plug on Dave Trembley, because the situation has just festered, but keep in mind the Orioles' poor standing also has to do with the fact that the other four teams in the division are especially strong; the O's are 8-25 (.242) against them, which is worse than the 1962 Mets' pace.
In terms of contention, I think a lot depends upon whom they hire as a manager. Buck Showalter might be able to get them playing respectable baseball by sometime next year, but contention will take some front office smarts, and I'm not sure the guy who signed Garrett Atkins need apply. Is the National League finally catching up in terms of talent? (psychdoc777 from Chicago) | It's certainly a weird list, isn't it? Not that I don't enjoy seeing Paul Konerko beating off Father Time, again; I expect that career-ending hip issue Tommy Lasorda conjured up more than a decade ago as a matter of CYA is bound to catch up to Konerko someday. For myself, I think it makes for a fascinating question about what's to come. Does anybody expect Jose Bautista to reach 30? He certainly doesn't have to in order to wind up with a career year. Ty Wigginton's doing enough good stuff to keep attention from focusing on "Garrett Atkins, Needless Expense in Cleats" when it comes to journeymen employed as Orioles. But here again, does this mean he's going to double his season tally with more than two-thirds of the season to play? Anybody expect that?
It makes for an interesting proposition as far as who might end up winning an MVP award: One of the Twins' towers? Somebody who has a great second half for a late-charging contender? A pitcher? But I don't take it for a minute to mean that the NL's caught up to anybody--their list of HR leaders is almost as freaky, with Kelly Johnson and Rod Barajas up there. (Christina Kahrl) |

Personally, I like both moves (and the Millwood one last week) given their relatively low cost (short commitments to all three players) and fit with the Orioles' long range plans. How about you? Do you see them "really" playing for M. Holliday or AGon? (BartPachino from Northridge, CA) | Not wild about either move, though Gonzo is flippable if need be, and the length, as you say, isn't bad. I like the Millwood move more.

(Jay from DC) | I think a lot would depend on which team in which park... put Wood in Houston, for example, and he might be a star. Put him in Denver and see his strikeout rate take a park-induced dip, and people would get over Garrett Atkins or Ian Stewart in a hurry. The problem is that with the Angels (sensibly) going year to year with Figgins, there isn't much incentive for them to do anything differently than was done to, say, Al Rosen's career. Not that Wood's going to be Al Rosen, but I'd love to see what he might do in Phoenix or Denver. (Christina Kahrl) |

Someone in my league just traded Ryan Howard, Justin Verlander, Josh Beckett, Curtis Granderson and Manny Ramirez for Cliff Lee, Ervin Santana, Carlos Gomez, Torii Hunter, Erik Bedard and Garrett Atkins.
A lot of people are screaming veto, and I have to agree. The trade doesn't have any 'needs-based' or 'long-term' mitigating factors, either. As an important aside, the team getting the first set of players is in third while the other guy is near the bottom.
Would you exercise a veto on this deal? Thanks! (havens from bristol, CT) | Are we assuming good faith in this deal? Often a league has someone in it who is the Randy Smith of fantasy GMs and just gets suckered by everybody. I think that guy is fair game -- if he wears diapers, he shouldn't have been allowed in the league in the first place. I'm not for exercising the veto except in really apparent cases of dumping... You know, there was a parallel case in actual baseball, where for awhile Bowie Kuhn was negating trades just because he didn't like the players involved. He was actually sitting there and passing judgment on what the GMs were doing. Imagine if Bud Selig came in and said "Mets, you're overpaying for Johan Santana. No deal." That kind of thing was happening, and the more obvious opposite case as well, where he would have said, "Twins, Carlos Gomez isn't good enough. You need to hold out for a better position player or no deal." Like much of Kuhn's reign it was pathetic and unintentionally comical. (Steven Goldman) |

does having jeter and cano up the middle hurt some of the yankee pitchers like wang? (jphan44 from NY) | In both 2006 and 2007 I had Robinson Cano doing well at +7.8 and +9.1 respectively. The system didn't like him in 2005 when he was -6.1.
That said, in SFR the infielders next to you definitely have an effect on your SFR. I think we saw that this year with Garrett Atkins where he rated "only" -3.5 when other systems have him way down there with Ryan Braun. (Dan Fox) |
