BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Arredondo is the unusual right-hander who eats lefties for lunch (not literally; cannibalism is wrong), gaining more than 50 points of OBP against them and more than 120 points of SLG for his career. The former shortstop's command is inconsistent, which may help explain why he's used primarily in low-leverage situations. He doesn't throw as hard as he did when he first came up with the Angels, before 2010 Tommy John surgery, but he gets the job done and is a handy guy to have in middle relief.
2012 The world may always need ditch-diggers, but it also needs its garbage men, and that's effectively all Arredondo was for the Reds in his comeback campaign from Tommy John surgery. Dusty trusted him just five times all year with leads of three runs or less. His biggest virtue is an assortment that doesn't limit him to situational roles, as he alternates splitters and sliders with a fairly standard low-90s fastball. The greatest threat to his job security is probably his just-acquired arbitration eligibility, because beyond basic competence there's not much to recommend the former shortstop for more than a staff-filler role.
2011 Jose Arredondo underwent Tommy John surgery last February, so he should be ready to return at or near the start of the season. The Reds hope his comeback tour will summon memories of his dreamy 2008 and not his nightmarish 2009, though SIERA didn’t see much difference between the two.
2010 Arredondo came out of nowhere as a rookie in 2008, cracking the league's top 20 in WXRL and looking like the Angels' closer of the future. Alas, his 2009 was a complete disasterpiece, due in part to injuries—a strained hip flexor in March and a UCL sprain in late June (suffered during his Triple-A stint)—which caused his average fastball velocity to drop by about 1.5 mph. His BABIP and ground-ball and HR/FB rates all moved in the wrong direction (the latter doubled from seven to 14 percent), but much of it was simply regression; his SIERA barely budged, suggesting that Arredondo's sophomore jinx owed much to things he couldn't control. Barring further injury, he's a good candidate to rebound, but the Angels non-tendered him in December rather than wait to see it.
2009 Arredondo began the year as a guy with a big fastball and little else, but then he proved that the pitch is more than good enough to get by on. He gave up a run in only eight of 52 appearances, and picked up a fluky 10 wins that you just know won somebody their fantasy league. Not only does Arredondo's fastball sit in the 94-97 mph range, it features such excellent movement that at times he has control issues because of it. While the Angels have signed Brian Fuentes to close, if Arredondo can find a solid second offering he might be ready to step in when Fuentes' two-year deal is done.
2008 This hard-throwing Dominican made his long-awaited move to the bullpen last year, but the season was more notable for his behavior than his pitching. Arredondo was suspended, then demoted to the Cal League after throwing a tantrum upon being taken out of a game. The step backwards made it a lost year, so forget the lines above, remember the high-90s heat, and see what he does starting at Triple-A Salt Lake this year. Like Adenhart, he could be in Anaheim by August
2007 Another shortstop-turned-hurler, Arredondo, like many of his breed, has a plus fastball despite not having the big frame typical flamethrowers. Little more than two years into the conversion, the slight Dominican has a lot of the problems you`d expect--poor control, no reliable second pitch, and no real touch when it comes to changing speeds. It probably didn`t help matters that the Angels pushed him up to Double-A prematurely, but with his fastball topping out at 97 MPH, we could see Arredondo panning out as a reliever.
