BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 Reggie Abercrombie walked in over five percent of his plate appearances for the first time in nine years.
2009 Pitchers love Reggie, as he treats the strike zone as though 't were as wide as a church door and as deep as a well. That is more than enough to suck all the value out of his power and speed. It took a major injury (Carlos Lee's broken finger) to get him onto the roster as a fourth outfielder, and he beat up on some September call-up pitchers, but Houston wasn't impressed enough to keep him around for another year, non-tendering him in December.
2008 Given an audition as the Marlins' starting center fielder in 2006, the toolsy Abercrombie played poorly and lost the job by midseason. In May of last year, he got a second chance in a platoon role; he failed, again. There's room for him on a roster as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement-he can run like the wind-but he should only start a couple times a month. The Astros snagged Abercrombie off of waivers in October, and he'll try to snag a spot as Michael Bourn's understudy. If Bourn is only an echo of a major league hitter, then Abercrombie is the fossil of that echo, the after-image of the shadow of something that wasn't quite there in the first place.
2007 Getting Reggie Abercrombie out in 2006 was as easy as shooting fish in a barrel, a shallow, fish-shaped barrel that contains no water. Last year we didn`t even bother putting Abercrombie in the book; we saw a 25-year-old with career minor league rates of .258/.303/.418 and concluded that he was not ready to hit, likely never would be, and that the Marlins wouldn`t be foolish enough to play him. Either we underestimated the Marlins, or the Marlins underestimated us. Either way, Abercrombie remains a player with as little upside, even as a reserve, as any player in the majors, last year or this.
