YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Panik is the type of player who grows on scouts. He isn't loaded with tools, but is a gamer who gets the most out of what he has. His ceiling probably straddles the line between a first- and second-division starter. Though he is currently being developed as a shortstop, where he has decent actions and a fringy arm, the best bet is on him ending up at second base. Offensively, Panik makes contact at a high rate, but his power is limited to driving the ball to the gaps. He'll likely be tested this year with a Double-A assignment.
2012 The Giants' 2011 first-round pick took the first step toward proving everybody wrong with a strong debut in the Northwest League. Considering scouts' low regard for his tools and athleticism, Panik's promotions will always be tied to approach, fundamentals, and performance. He had more walks than strikeouts for Salem-Kaizer, just as he did in college, and was unspectacular but steady at shortstop. He kept a similar slash line going in the Arizona Fall League. Expect his gap power and mature approach to play especially well in the California League in 2012.

2014-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Joe Panik just called up. What do you expect from him? He never got the love Wong did, but seems he may become a better Wong.
(Chone Figgins from Los Angeles)
I do enjoy a good Wong joke. However, Kolten is far more talented than Panik. Wong has the skills to be a first division 2B. Don't believe that's in the cards for Panik. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-02-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has Joe Panik completely fallen off as a prospect? Is he even worth keeping in a dynasty league because of his position?
(Mark from SF)
He's probably not going to be much of a fantasy contributor, and if he is, you'll be able to grab him. Not worth hanging onto in fantasy. As an actual prospect, well, basically the same thing. (Jeff Moore)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the better career: Pete Kozma or Joe Panik?
(Beau from SF)
Kozma. (Jason Parks)
