DateQuestionAnswer
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)Would you trade Josh Donaldson for Oscar Taveres in a dynasty format points league? We don't have contracts, and player can be kept forever.
(Tim from Miami)
Yes, I would make that trade. There's obviously some risk, but I think that even if Oscar Taveras disappoints, you're looking at a $20-25 player long term. Donaldson's ceiling is probably as a $25 player, even with the positional advantage. I'd take the risk here. If you're wrong, you (hopefully) shouldn't get burned too much. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Recently read that Gregory Polanco could develop more power than Oscar Taveras. How do they compare?
(Jimmy from St Louis)
No. I don't think Polanco is in that league. Taveras has crazy raw power and the type of hit tool to let it all come to play. (Jason Parks)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Oscar Taveras is the starting right fielder for the Cardinals opening day next season?
(nubber from tx)
I think he's starting in the outfield. Not sure where. (Jason Parks)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which five players currently in the minors have the highest ceiling?
(Mario66 from Pittsburgh)
Byron Buxton, Oscar Taveras, Javier Baez, Archie Bradley, Jorge Alfaro (hard to name five) (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-06-27 13:15:00 (link to chat)So the Cardinals have an awesome problem. What are they going to do in 2014 with Oscar Taveras, Kolten Wong, and Matt Adams when Jon Jay, Matt Carpenter, and Allen Craig already in their respective positions?
(Brady Childs from Boulder)
I wish we all had the Cardinals' problems. Carlos Beltran will be a free agent, and Craig can play a lot of positions, so finding time for Taveras, Adams, and Craig seems doable. Carpenter's emergence makes Wong a valuable trade chip. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-05-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the better offensive career: Harper or Oscar Taveras? Is it close or no?
(Tony from Bronx)
Harper. He's not just a superstar. He's mythical. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)when do you see Oscar Taveras getting PT? With Adams mashing it seems there would need to be injuries to Beltran and Holliday or jay as there are no good cf options really.
(Canteen Boy from NJ)
Not until there's an injury, or 2014. But there are a few injury prone players ahead of him, so it's more likely than it would be on other teams. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Whos the minor leaguer we should be looking for the best value in terms of points this year?
(Dhale243 from San diego)
Oscar Taveras. Tough to beat the value of a high-average slugger who won't strike out much. (Bret Sayre)
2013-04-10 20:00:00 (link to chat)Couple of trade questions: My team: Rosario, Howard, Altuve, Frazier, Rollins, Cuddyer, A. Jones, B.Upton, De Aza. Bench: Carpenter, Rutledge, Hicks, Olt, Puig, Soler, Baez Rotation:Wainwright, Burnett, Harvey, E. Jackson, Jose Fernandez Bench: Cole, Hultzen, Gausman, Hammel I give up: Rollins and Altuve I get: Chase Headley(Trying to get Taveras included) I give up: Rollins, Mariano Rivera, Olt I get: Matt Wieters, Wil Myers Which trade if any do I move on? I would move Rutledge into the SS position, then I would move Carpenter into 2B. If I make either move.
(Mr. Slate from Bedrock)
Hi Slate:

I don't like the first trade at all. Headley is ahead of his timetable and could be back in a couple of weeks, but even if Headley does what he did in 2012, Jimmy Rollins OR Jose Altuve aren't that much worse and you're giving up both. Oscar Taveras obviously helps, but unless you're playing for 2014 or unless you know you can flip him for another player if you're gunning for it, this is a risky move. The second trade has some of the same problems. Rollins is probably better than Wieters and you're giving up Mariano as well. I don't know what your "dump" culture is like: that is to say, how players like Myers and Taveras are valued by teams playing for next year. If you think you can flip Taveras or Myers later for more in this year talent to push yourself to victory, then do it. If you can't and you're just making this trade for stats, hold off. (Mike Gianella)
2013-04-01 12:45:00 (link to chat)With Andrus locked up at SS for the Rangers, Oscar Taveras for Jurickson Profar looks better than ever! Would a front office ever make this kind of deal, or is there just too much downside for the guys who pull the trigger?
(drive2fast19 from Baltimore)
It makes sense to satisfy immediate needs for this year, but do you make a challenge trade to fill a single need this season? For example, if you're Texas and you need an outfielder, do you need to trade Profar to get one? - Carleton (Baseball Prospectus Staff)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)You have Oscar Taveras and Adalberto Mondesi on a double date, who do you take and where do you go?
(SexyAndIKnowIt from LMFAO)
Taveras would get the date because he has seniority and more present skills. I'd take him to the IFC and then to casual yet charming bed and breakfast with a view of the park. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Single sexiest tool you've ever seen?
(Nick from Los Feliz, CA)
Oscar Taveras in the batting cage, showing off his ability to drive a baseball. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Were you married at one point in your life? Also, would you marry Tom Verducci or Oscar Taveras?
(Majestic from #sparkle)
I was. We split last year. I;d marry Taveras. Verducci seems like a very high-maintenance man (Jason Parks)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Did you watch "The Bible" on the History Channel last week? It was neat to see Oscar Taveras as a baby.
(Colin from Austin)
#want (Jason Parks)
2013-03-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)I inherited a team in a Dynasty: I need a 2B and a SS. Asdrubal Cabrera and Danny Espinosa are available(Espinosa has 2B and SS eligibility. However, I'm in the middle of a rebuilding and Oscar Taveras is available along with Gerrit Cole. I have 1st pick. Who would you go with? I am leaning Taveras.
(MerleDixon from PA)
Me too. (Paul Singman)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Would you trade Josh Hamilton (4 yr contract at 30) for Oscar Taveras (10 yr of control, escalating 1-15) straight up if you were the favorite to win your league this year and would have to replace Hamilton with Ryan Ludwick?
(stevenst from TX)
I would, because I'd think that if I had to I could flip Taveras for more talent than Hamilton in a subsequent trade if that's what it took to win. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Oscar Taveras scares me as a non-Cardinal fan. If he reaches his ceiling, just how good is that going to be?
(Mike from Cincinnati)
Taveras has the potential to be so good that the Maya return to glory and start chopping heads in his name to keep his blood-thirsty bat speed from eradicating the civilization. He could be that good. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Oscar Taveras get a cup of coffee in September?
(Joe from Seattle)
Might not even take that long. As good as their team, it's not a model of health so he could come up before then. If not, then yes, definitely in September. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)In your opinion, looking way down the road, which of the BP 101 prospect hitters and pitchers end up having the best careers?
(cal guy from cal)
I'll go with Oscar Taveras and, taking a gamble on his recovery from elbow surgery, Lucas Giolito. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)At what point in a players development do you start to really pay attention? For example,Oscar Taveras had a really violent swing and was dominating A ball. Then AA ball and the swing was still violent. When he got to AAA- at that point he had the uncanny ability to square up the baseball.
(rangerfans2 from Fort Worth)
You have to pay attention to all of it, but context is important. What works in Low-A doesn't always work in the high minors. Depends on the player. (Jason Parks)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Want to play desert island discs? You get five. How about desert island prospects? You get five...purely on who you enjoy watching the most.
(Name from Place)
1. Oscar Taveras 2. Javier Baez 3. Francisco Lindor 4. Jose Fernandez 5. Rougned Odor (Jason Parks)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Taijuan Walker and Oscar Taveras are both on their respective big league rosters by August of 2013. True or false?
(JPinPhilly from Excellent)
Probably true. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Out of the group of: Oscar Taveras, Jurickson Profar, Anthony Rizzo and Wil Myers. If given the same number of MLB ABs, who do you foresee having the most HRs, highest WARP/VORP and awards if each remain with their current organization in a 6 yr span?
(jlarsen from chicago)
With the caveat that I'm not an expert prospect guy, I'd say most homers Myers, highest AVG/OBP Taveras, and highest WARP Profar. Doesn't hurt that Profar has already arrived, though he's also -0.2 WARP in the hole from last season. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)who's more likely to have a fantasy impact this season, Oscar Taveras or Jurickson Profar?
(NoahB from San Diego)
Honestly, I'm not sure either will make a significant impact on the fantasy front in 2013. Taveras doesn't have a clear line to the big leagues right now, unless the Cardinals are willing to push him into center field. Profar is in a similar situation in that the Rangers would have to make room for him, moving either Andrus or Kinsler to another position. Both are great long term fantasy options, but they may only provide minimal value in 2013. (Mark Anderson)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)Thanks Mark. Will Oscar Taveras draw enough walks as a major leaguer to have a solid OPB, maybe above .350, or is that unrealistic given his approach and ability to barrel up just about everything?
(Kphan34 from Manchester, CT)
His approach may not lend to many walks, but I firmly believe he's going to hit for enough average to support that kind of OBP. I'm a big believer in the bat and if he begins to approach his considerable ceiling, the walks could increase as pitchers work around him and he learns to approach his at-bats differently. (Mark Anderson)
2012-12-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which pure hitting prospect blossoms into the better overall player: Wil Myers, Oscar Taveras, Nick Castellanos?
(Kai from SLO)
Oscar Taveras. (Chris Mellen)
2012-12-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)With Oscar Taveras raking in winter ball, do you see a way he can get a large amount of playing time with the Cardinals in 2013 without injury to the current roster? I can't believe they would bench Jay in center due to defense.
(rookie319s from Saint Louis)
Thanks for stopping by, rookie319s. I don't think the Cardinals will be in a huge rush to promote Taveras, given that their outfield is full, so he'll probably end up getting more upper-minors seasoning than he needs. For now, he is ó†as you said ó†outstanding injury insurance, and a clear heir to Beltran's spot in right field. WARP had Jon Jay as a 3.2-win producer last year, so I agree with your sentiment that he should not be benched. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Oscar Taveras seems to get a lot of love but I have seen him projected anywhere from 20 homers and a 300 avg. to 30+ homers and a 270 avg. what would you seem him producing in his prime and is he really just an injury away from the bigs in 2013?
(Mike from NJ)
Taveras is the real deal, though projecting a specific stat line is problematic, primarily because of the super-aggressive approach. The bottom line is that he could be a top-five-in-the-game type of offensive player if the bat-to-ball skills hold up. Maybe I'm ducking the question some, but I think a lot of this is simply to be determined by how well he makes adjustments. (Nick Faleris)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did you watch the debate last night? The one between Oscar Taveras' ceiling and the laws of physics? It got pretty heated, with both sides calling the other a liar
(utdavidson from Austin)
Oscar Taveras vs. bayonets and horses (Jason Parks)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are Kolten Wong and Oscar Taveras' possibilities of starting the year with the big club in 2013?
(Josh from St. Louis)
Not very good. I don't see a clear path to the majors for Taveras in 2013, unless an off-season trade or injury opens up an opportunity. I think he reaches the level, but I don't think he breaks camp. (Jason Parks)
2012-10-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospects do you see being major fantasy players next year?
(Jordan from St. Elsewhere)
Billy Hamilton is supposed to see time in the outfield in the AFL this year, and his stolen base ability could make him an immediate impact player. I love Wil Myers and Oscar Taveras, as well as Jurickson Profar. I'm not sure how the Nationals will handle Anthony Rendon with Ryan Zimmerman entrenched at third, but he has some potential to get to the bigs and make an impact quickly. (Josh Shepardson)
2012-09-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you were a betting man, which OF prospect would you bet on having the better career; Oscar Taveras or Wil Myers?
(ChrisHopcroft from Glasgow)
Myers, but best not to bet on such things at all unless you really have to. (Colin Wyers)
2012-08-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Oscar Taveras continues to hit his way toward the majors, and that creates an interesting roster problem for St. Louis, since they have above-average starters at all three outfield positions (check out the WARPs). If you're John Mozeliak, how do you prepare for OT's arrival? Just hold him in the minors until Beltran's contract expires, or make a deal? If the latter, who and how?
(Bill from New Mexico)
Iíd keep him in the minors until the last day of August, then bring him up for playoff roster purposes. You probably canít get enough value for Jay to justify trading him right now. So let Taveras come up, get accustomed to big-league life, and spell the other outfielders for the seasonís final few weeks. Then you can head into the offseason with an eye on him taking over for Jay next season. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-07-11 12:00:00 (link to chat)Do I target Taijuan Walker to beef up my already deep rotation, or Oscar Taveras to be my full-time DH? Trade my pick for Billy Hamilton? Order of preference?
(Dynasty Depth from Denton)
I'd trade my kids for Billy Hamilton in a fantasy league. I want Taveras over Walker. (Jason Collette)
2012-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Youre stuck on a secluded island, and you can only take one prospect with you to watch develop and play for the rest of your life. Do you take Fransisco Lindor or Oscar Taveras?
(Twenty Grade Tony from Albuquerque)
I'd take Lindor. I love watching slick defense at a premium position. That's not a knock on Taveras. (Jason Parks)
2012-04-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Jake Marisnick? He was off to a slow start, but seems to be heating up. Also is Oscar Taveras the best pure hitter in the minors? If not could you give a quick top 5. Love you and the podcast (but mostly you).
(msloftus from NYC)
Thanks. Marisnick struggled to start the year and then made the necessary adjustments to take a step forward. I can't stress this enough: young prospect that can make adjustments are usually the young prospects that eventually become major league players. The ability to make adjustments is paramount to success, regardless of the level. Marisnick has impressed more than a few scouts with his ability to make the small adjustment in order to execute.

Taveras is on any list of the best hitters in the minors. Could be a .300+ hitter at the major league level at maturity. (Jason Parks)
2012-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Oscar Taveras is showing the bat already, even tacking on a few walks the last couple games. Any reviews about how he's handling the switch to center field?
(Oliver from Boston, MA)
I don't have any scouting reports you haven't already read elsewhere, but the consensus of opinion always seemed to be he isn't a major league centerfielder. If he keeps swinging a big stick, it won't matter--he'll be an asset in a corner, especially if he continues to improve his approach. (Ken Funck)

(stevenpsu78 from York pa)
Potential stud. His swing is going to bother scouts up the chain, and he's also going to hit all the way up the chain. It's not always pretty, and he swings the bat like he's trying to kill someone breaking into his home, but it works. (Jason Parks)
