BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better bet for next year, Brandon Belt or Eric Hosmer?
(Dave from Des Moines)
I prefer Belt. Injuries are mostly what kept Belt back this year, whereas Hosmer's lack of power really makes me wonder if 15 home runs is his sad ceiling. (Mike Gianella)
2014-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Assuming the concussion issues are in the past, what can we expect from Brandon Belt in 2015?
(Rory from Hartford)
More improvement. Maybe 25 home runs with a .280-.290 batting average. I like him a lot if he's healthy. (Mike Gianella)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in a 14 team, 5x5 dynasty league. at 1B, i currently have Brandon Belt and Jon Singleton. Is Kennys Vargas worth a pickup ? I'm not contending this year.
(childgrambino from Richmond, VA)
I don't think he'll approach either of the guys you have, but I suppose it depends on who you're cutting. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)So have you given up on Hosmer?
(jamesmcevoy from San Diego)
I'm not giving up on him, but it needs to look different than it is right now. There's just no power in that swing, and if he can't hit for power he's not even Brandon Belt. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)Could you please rank the following on value in a 5 x 5 for the next 4-5 years in total? Desmond Jennings, Austin Jackson, Brandon Belt, Brett Lawrie
(Vic from Baltimore)
Jennings, Jackson, Lawrie, Belt. (Bret Sayre)
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)Who are a few hitters/pichers you like to break-out this year?
(Shawn from Cubicle)
I don't know if he's a breakout candidate, but I'm a big Tyson Ross fan. I think the adjustments they made are real and while the injury risk might always be there, he was (tied) for the hardest pitcher to hit in the second half.

I think Brett Lawrie is a nice post-hype candidate put up some sneaky 15/20 goodness.

Brandon Belt isn't exactly a breakout candidate, but he is going to add even more power this year. (Mike Gianella)
2014-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who has the better bat skills: Alex Jackson or Braxton Davidson?
(Silverback38 from VA)
Tough question. I think I'd give the slight edge to Braxton Davidson as of right now; he's a Brandon Belt type for me. Saw the tools from Jackson at Long Beach, but wish he had performed a little better. (Ronit Shah)
2014-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Baby Giraffe has escaped! Can Brandon Belt be a .300/25/100 performer in that ballpark?
(The Zoo from SF)
It'll be tough, but he also gets to hit in Coors and Chase so the 25/100 side is possible. I think he's going to be closer to the .280 range though. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)N. Arenado or B. Belt for CI, this year and the future?
(Ryan from Wintery Wonderland)
Hi Ryan:

I'd go with Brandon Belt over Nolan Arenado both this year and long term. I like Belt a lot better as a pure hitter and even though Arenado is in Colorado I'm skeptical that he is ever going to be a big time masher. The park difference is significant which makes Arenado tempting in a keep forever, but I'm going with the talent here and taking Belt. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)I have the fifth pick in a 14 team mixed pts. league. (-.5 for Ks by batters, .8 for walks, -1 for GIDP). I'm looking for a CI (we give 4.2/HR) with power. Moss will be there, so will Carter. Belt might be there, IDK we keep 12. I should pick Moss, even though he's a platoon batter, right?
(balticwolf from Silver Spring MD)
Of the three, I think I'd go with Brandon Belt. Belt's power has improved a little bit each year and while he's not as prodigious as Moss he could be pretty close. I like the upside pick of Belt here over Moss, who I feel is pretty much at his ceiling. (Mike Gianella)
2013-11-22 14:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Brandon Belt for the upcoming season?
(Derek from STL)
Belt made tremendous strides in his age-25 season, and he was a beast in the second half. I could see a .280/.365/.490 line or thereabouts if he stays on track. (Doug Thorburn)
2013-10-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think these guys can build off of their solid year and potentially have break out performances in 2014: Jason Castro, Brandon Belt, Kyle Seager, Danny Salazar?
(Derek from The Recliner)
I've always liked Belt, but I don't know if a guy who is coming off a .289/.360/.481 season can really break out. I mean, I guess he could hit .350/.420/.590 but I don't see that coming. Seager was a five win player by WARP too. That's beyond solid and into very good range. But of those players I like Belt and Seager the best to repeat their performance and/or improve incrementally. (Matthew Kory)
2013-10-07 18:00:00 (link to chat)Brandon Belt's second half seemed very promising. Do you think he can finally climb over the hump and become a solid fantasy first basemen? What kind of stat line can do you predict next year? Thanks for the chat!
(Jim from The couch)
I've always liked Belt. He was a $22 hitter in NL-only, earning $3 less than Adrian Gonzalez and Allen Craig. He's already solid, the question for me is how much further can he climb. At one time, I thought Belt would develop into a 30 HR hitter, but his minor league track record combined with his Major League performance make this seem unlikely. Still, a 20-25 HR hitter in his prime with some speed and solid batting averages can't be overlooked. (Mike Gianella)
2013-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)You think Brandon Belt's second half is any indication of what the man can do for a full year? Thanks for the chat Mr. Pavlidis.
(Mitch from San Francisco)
no, I think his full season line is much more indicative of his upcoming performance (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)NL only keeper league, but neither player will be kept next year - Brandon Belt for Cole Hamels, ROS, is this fair for both sides?
(Kingpin from Grinnell, IA)
Don't milk the bull, Kingpin!

I like Hamels better ROS. Even though the ERA doesn't indicate an "ace", the peripherals have still been strong. I like Belt, but I don't see him as an elite or near elite 1B. If I had Hamels, I'd want the next notch up over Belt. If I had Belt, I'd take Hamels for him in an instant and gamble on the performance spike. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Since July 22 of 2012, Brandon Belt is .287/.354/.453, good for a 127 wRC+ over 554 PA. Safe to say that he's quietly come into his own as a top-10 first baseman?
(Ben Z from Toronto)
hmmm. It's close. One one hand I expect more power out of a top shelf first baseman. AT&T will keep the lefty home run numbers down so that's part of it. And he's probably got more power to come....I'll say not quite top 10 yet. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-05-22 18:00:00 (link to chat)Are Brandon Belt loyalist finally going to be repaid for their unwaivering faith (pun intended) this season? 20+ HR's and double digit steals likely? If so, counting stat wise, is he not the Eric Hosmer that most people were looking for this season?
(PhilumciousPhil from The Sun)
That's 14 HRs & 8 SB the rest of the way. I'd still take him over Hosmer (Jason Collette)
2013-04-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat! I had high hopes for Brandon Belt and Mike Moustakas at the beginning of the season. Should I finally give up on these two?
(Derek from St. Louis)
Of the two, I had a stronger pull toward the Belt fan club and I'm trying to find an escape route where nobody will notice me slip out the back door of the meeting.

But these things shouldn't be binary yes-no type of things. Every bit of additional information should adjust your expectations, and there's no question that this start lowers mine even if only a bit.

By the way, Giants first base has been a black hole for a decade with the exception of Aubrey Huff's quickly-corrected 2010. (Zachary Levine)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks Geoff, Should I be worried about Brandon Belt's horrific start?
(Keith from Manchester, CT)
Hey Keith, glad you could join us. Belt had a 14-game stretch last year from July 6 to July 24 where he went 2-for-34 with 15 strikeouts. Don't sweat it, these things happen. (Geoff Young)
2013-04-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's been the problem with Brandon Belt?
(nubber from tx)
Bruce Bochy mentioned some mechanical inconsistencies, but batted-ball luck has been as much of a problem as anything. He hit four balls hard in Tuesday's game and came away with next to nothing; a .231 BABIP and 28.2% line-drive rate won't jibe for long. (Daniel Rathman)
2013-03-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks Bret. Please rank in terms of 2013 performance and career? Eric Hosmer, Brandon Belt and Domonic Brown
(Keith from Manchester, CT)
Hosmer, Brown, Belt. Even with the spring he's having, I'm not sold on Belt being any sort of real power threat at the major league level. And I still believe Hosmer will be a stud. (Bret Sayre)
2013-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat! Could you rank these following players on chances of a breakout season: Kyle Seager, Brandon Belt, Todd Frazier, Ben Revere, Matt Harvey, and Mike Moustakas?
(Derek from Kansas City)
Harvey
Belt
Moustakas
Revere
Seager
Frazier (Zachary Levine)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks Paul. How high are your expectations for 1B Eric Hosmer and Brandon Belt this year after disappointing 2012?
(Keith from Manchester, CT)
Ooh good names. Hosmer's skills didn't crater so despite the disappointment, I'm still optimistic and prefer him to Belt. Belt was probably better than some realize and I think part of his disappointment were unfair expectations. There's some upside in his bat, but it's probably 18-20 HR as opposed to mid-20s as I think too many expected. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm targeting Michael Pineda in a dynasty league. I'm in the position where I can maybe sneak into the playoffs as the #8 seed. Pineda would be great for me because a) his youth/talent makes him a great fit for my young/high ceiling team; and b) He's a potential 2nd half add that I can stash on my DL through the majority of the season. If I am buying, what's a fair offer for him in general (I know rosters would help here, no can do!). If you own Pineda, what are you asking for? Are you selling, or holding?
(AJ from Phoenix)
If I'm contending I'd probably sell, but in a dynasty league he still has significant value. Either a top prospect or a solid contributing MLB asset like a Brandon Belt. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat! Pick your breakout candidate this year out of the following: Todd Frazier, Brandon Belt, Mike Moustakas, and Kyle Seager.
(Derek from KC)
I like this question. I feel like Frazier and Belt are closest to their ceilings; Belt, especially, has some fundamental mechanical stuff to address if he ever wants to reach his power ceiling. I like the little power boost Seager displayed last year, but I can't help but feel like Moose is the only superstar in the bunch. Yeah, he's scuffled some the past two years, but he's going to be 24 for the entire '13 season. He's still CRAZY young. Gotta go with him. And even if he doesn't figure it out this year, he'll definitely be the guy over the long haul. (Ian Miller)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat! In my keeper league I kept Mike Moustakas, Todd Frazier, Brandon Belt, and Kyle Seager. Smart move?
(Derek from Kansas City)
Derek, it depends on the opportunity cost. I can see reasons for keeping all four of those players in a vacuum, but we both know that's not how this thing works. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-12-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Brandon Belt had an up and down year for the Giants but is expected to be our starting first baseman to start the year. Given his skill set and consistent playing time should we expect a big improvement in his game? Thanks for the chat!
(Jim from San Francisco)
I feel a lot of #wish in this question. I get the love for Brandon Belt and I feel it too. The wrist will hopefully be back to fully better and the power will turn more from doubles to HR. If the Giants actually do stick with him, that should have positive results. (Russell Carleton)
2012-09-24 14:30:00 (link to chat)Current bench-player who you could see blossom into star, if he wasn't riding bench/blocked by superstar/wrongfully platooned and was non-tendered or given a "change of scenery"?
(jlarsen from chicago)
This is a great question, and I've been thinking about this one for most of the last hour and a half, and I haven't been able to come up with a good answer. Does Brandon Belt still count? I think it's crazy that Belt hasn't just played all game for the Giants, every game. I think that's going to be the best I'm able to do. If you've got a better answer, please email or tweet at me (@Bill_TPA or billtpa on gmail). It's bugging me now. (Bill Parker)
2012-09-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm going to rehash a question that I asked another BP writer this week. What player currently relegated to a bench role would perform at a star level if given a full time job or was traded and utilized correctly? So far, we've only gotten Brandon Belt and Peter Bourjos between the 2 of us.
(jlarsen from chicago)
Belt's been starting regularly for months now, so I think we can cross him off the list.

Not really sure about Bourjos either. He's clearly an above-average defender, but I'm not sure he's a "real" .270 hitter. If he is, then yeah, with his speed, he might crack star-level.

It's a good question, but no one else is really springing to mind for me. Let's crowdsource: you guys have any votes for guys who are currently playing in a bench role who deserve a starting spot? (Ian Miller)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Time to start smiling that I grabbed Brandon Belt in my keeper league. Or should I be a bit skeptical that 1) he continues to get playing time or 2) he is a bit too streaky.
(Vic from Fresno)
Well, he's been hitting and the team doesn't have a lot of better options, so PT should be pretty stable going forward unless poor performance forces the issue. Streakiness is largely a myth, so Belt seems like a solid own in keeper leagues. (Derek Carty)
2012-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)My dad never believed in Brandon Belt, whereas I constantly defended him. How long do I wait before I start gloating?
(rotorueter from Ohio)
There's no time like the present. Commence gloating this instant. (Ian Miller)
2012-05-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any thoughts on the Giants 'handling' of Brandon Belt?
(michaelmcduffe from ottawa)
Well, I think it's safe to say they could be handling him better. They bounced him around a lot last year, but at least he's getting regular ABs against righties this year. That said, unless the scouts see something in his swing to suggest he'd be awful against lefties, they should be playing him every single day. If this guy could potentially be a big part of your future, you need to find out for sure whether he can handle pitchers of both hands. (Derek Carty)
2012-04-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)Brandon Belt comp at his career peak?
(Karl from Chicago)
I'm so not the guy to answer this question. So on that basis I'll go with part John Olerud, part Babe Dahlgren, and part sad clown. I'll let you pick which parts. (Matthew Kory)
2012-04-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)How is it that after jerking Brandon Belt around last season and announcing that this season he would get his chance the Giants have now discovered flaws in Belt's approach (after three whole games!) that have necessitated his removal to the bench in favour of Brett Pill? They told the kid the job is his...what has changed?
(michaelmcduffe from ottawa)
in retrospect it seems clear that the Giants questioned his approach even last year - they're just more vocal about talking about it publicly now as a means of justifying their decisions. It doesn't mean they're wrong, either, but with that offense, I think you have to take the chance and find out with some on-the-job training whether he needs to evolve his approach significantly. (Jay Jaffe)
2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Does Brandon Belt finally get the everyday chance this season? What do you think he will do with it?
(will.I.ain't from Holding pattern)
I think he does and he could have a good Adam LaRoche type season if everything goes right (Jason Collette)
2012-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your expectations for Brandon Belt this year, both in terms of how he's handled by the Giants and his production if he gets PT?
(Eric from ON)
I think he'll play. He only needs one of the four guys blocking him to have an awful April, and none of the four guys blocking him (Nate, Melky, Pagan, Huff) are without flaws. Production: .265/.365/.465, 16 HR (Sam Miller)
2012-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Actual baseball-related question: Have the Giants done irreparable damage to Brandon Belt's development already? People are already speculating he won't break camp with the big club. As young Jimmy said in "Prospects and You," "I have a crazy friend who says it's wrong to give playing time to promisign rookies. Is he crazy?"
(ian the vegan from Oakland)
I don't like his plate discipline trends since they started jacking him around. I also think prospects are very rarely damaged by their teams the way that we imagine. Baseball's just sort of crazy and things go wrong with even the best. (Sam Miller)
