YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Singleton may still be in pre-launch status, but expect all systems to be “go” soon. While he won't be confused with Kevin Durant, he should provide excitement in Oklahoma City this summer. Singleton combines the sort of patience and power that could lead to on-base-percentage and slugging-percentage titles in his future. He hasn't figured out how to hit hard lefties, and he'll need to for elite offensive stats, but he likely has a year of Triple-A and six MLB seasons before he hits his prime. On defense he doesn't project as elite, but 2013 is only his age-21 season. With adequate height for a first baseman, good hand-eye coordination, and a great work ethic, he has a shot to become a decent fielder by the time he reaches full orbit.
2012 It could be said that Brett Wallace got shafted when the Astros traded for the hulking Singleton—not to be confused with Hollywood's John Singleton—from the Phillies, but it was poetic justice, as Wallace wasn't producing. The trade was the best thing to happen to Singleton, as his attempts to transition to the outfield weren't going well and he'd sometimes bring his defensive struggles to the plate. With great patience and a classic lefty power stroke, he has the potential to blast through the high minors and become the next Astros first baseman after Carlos Lee (whenever he departs). It could be said that he's too fast and too furious to let anyone stand in his way.
2011 Singleton is a big, left-handed first baseman. At least, he was—he's now a big, left-handed left fielder, after the combination of his largely successful season and the various obstacles to his progression conspired to force a defensive shift. Whether or not his eventual position remains blocked by Ryan Howard, Singleton did his best to force the issue in the first half, as he hit .373/.460/.672 before the break in an assault on Sally League pitching. His second half was as forgettable as his first half was remarkable, but he wasn’t the first 18-year-old to experience mixed results. He’ll move up a level and hope to show that the true Singleton was the first-half beast and not the second-half bum, all while playing a new position. The Phillies declined to include him in the Oswalt deal, so they clearly have faith in his long-term value.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think of Jonathan Singleton down the stretch? He's supposedly made some swing adjustments and is hitting lefties. Good source for cheap power? Do you like him over someone like Josh Reddick?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
They're about equal in my eyes, but Singleton has less competition for ABs from what I can tell. I'd roll the dice on him. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-06-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)True/False- Jonathan Singleton will put better rest of season numbers than Chris Carter?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
True. (Ron Shah)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in an AL only dynasty league. Chris Davis is in the last year of his rookie contract (I drafted him several years ago), so one dollar, for one year. I don't think I'm a championship caliber team this year and looking to move him. I was offered Jonathan Singleton for Davis. While this obviously is terrible at face value, guys have no contract until they're called up. I then would get a 6 year contract at a dollar per year for Singleton, regardless of production. What say you?
(Jesse from NY)
That's complicated. I'd probably hold out for a better offer, but I might take that come mid-season. I recently traded a $6 Davis who I could keep at that price for one more year or extend at a $5 raise per season, for a $1 Rendon, a $1 Ventura and a $9 McCann. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would like your thoughts on Jonathan Singleton for 2014? Will he have any impact in MLB for the Astros?
(Ben from San Antonio)
I've soured quite a bit on Singleton, for a variety of reasons. If he gets everything together in advance of next season, I could see him finding his way to Houston late in the year, but that's stretching it if I am being honest in my evaluation. (Mark Anderson)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are you concerned about Jonathan SIngleton's struggles this year?
(Mikey from Louisiana)
I wrote about him in this week's Ten Pack. I'm not crazy concerned about the bat, because he still shows the tools there. He came back out of shape and the range at first base was way down from last year. I liked him at first last year, but it was fall-down range when I saw him in June. From what I've heard, he's dropped a little bit of weight since then. He'll need to continue getting back into shape this offseason, and if he does that, I don't have a ton of concern. Still think he hits at the end of the day, and that's what's important. (Jason Cole)
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Jonathan Singleton getting the callup anytime soon?
(ddriver80 from Winnipeg)
I don't see any reason for the Astros to start his clock. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects)
2013-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you handle the Jonathan Singleton situation if you're the Astros? Can they move him to the 40-man to avoid the suspension?
(andtinez from Houston)
I don't think they can do that. Somebody please correctly if your JDA knowledge is better than mine. You can move him to the 40-man if you're worried he'll smoke again and then he can avoid the next suspension, but he's stuck with this one. What do I do? Just make sure he's ready to play on day 51. I figure Oklahoma City this year and Houston either September or next April. (Zachary Levine)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)What player was a let down to you after you watched him the first time.
(William from Pensacola, FL)
I try to go into every viewing limiting my preconceived notions. That said, given all the hype surrounding Jonathan Singleton when he was with Clearwater (FSL), I was a little disappointed in what I saw. He looked stiff and slow at the plate. He's loosened up as he has matured and looks more like what he was billed as now, and you're seeing the results on the field as well. (Mark Anderson)
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat)Does Jonathan Singleton have a 30HR .300 season in him, or am I smoking the Wacky Tobacky?
(Grubby from Possumjaw, AR)
That's a little rich for me. I think he can hit .280 with 25 bombs a year, which is still a very nice player. (Mark Anderson)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of power potential do you see in Jonathan Singleton?
(fredlummis from Houston)
7 raw; most likely to play at 5 early, but should tick up as he matures as a hitter. (Jason Parks)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Brett Wallace struggles next year (his K% makes one think he might) and Jonathan Singleton is tearing up AAA (off to a nice AFL start right now), how soon before we see him get the call?
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston, TX)
I know a guy in the Astros front office. I'll ask around.... (Jason Parks)
2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Jason, thanks for the chat! What prospects do you like to take large leaps up the rankings during this season?
(Jon KK from Elkhart, Ind.)
Jonathan Singleton, Brad Boxberger, Mikie Mahtook, Kolten Wong (Jason Collette)
2011-12-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Me thinking out loud : Jared Cosart will be lucky to develop into a top closer and Jonathan Singleton will be lucky to even reach the majors ? True or false ?
(Spirou from Montreal)
I think that's pessimistic. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did the Astros trade Hunter for Pence on the pound sterling? Feel free to use that one. What one? (Simpsons reference)
(Tbirds from Seattle)
Joke and Simpsons reference aside, the Astros got a very nice return on Pence. Kevin Goldstein had both Jarred Cosart and Jonathan Singleton among his top five prospects traded at the deadline, with Josh Zied among his potential sleepers. By comparison, the Astros got only one of the top 10 prospects dealt in the Michael Bourn deal (Brett Oberholtzer) plus one sleeper (Paul Clemens) AND they had to take on Jordan Schafer, who is the most obvious Astro in the history of obviousness. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Jonathan Singleton have the chops to make the move to LF? Please say yes.
(Ruben from PA)
I think he could at least be adequate there. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-01-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin, love the chats. Now that my Fiesta Bowl passing record is safe, who do you think is the top breakout candidate for 2011 from this list: Aaron Hicks, Wilmer Flores, Jonathan Singleton.
(BrowningNagle from Louisville, KY)
A. (Kevin Goldstein)
