2013 Morel was theoretically recovered from his back injury (a lumbar strain) in early August, but his bat never got going. When healthy, he is a capable defender at the hot corner, and should supply enough power to support limited batting average and on-base capabilities. Now three seasons removed from raking at Birmingham and Charlotte in 2010, he will need to re-prove himself in the minors before anyone offers him a starting job again. Back problems can be persistent and tricky, so it's no sure thing he'll ever be 100 percent again, and anything less puts his chances to increase his service time in jeopardy.
2012 Morel has a plus glove but has long suffered from Josh Vitters Disease, wherein a young third baseman with excellent plate coverage puts the first pitch he can reach in play rather than waiting for something he can drive. His symptoms were greatly in evidence throughout his rookie season, as Morel didn’t draw a walk until May 30th, and had only 11 free passes, two home runs, and a punchless .247/.271/.333 line through the end of August. When Morel started to embrace the selectivity his coaches were preaching, however, the results were eye-popping, featuring a .224/.340/.553 September line with 15 walks and 8 home runs. There’s always risk in reading too much into late-seasons results, but if Morel can carry his newfound patience forward he’ll continue to unleash the power in his swing and will blow past that PECOTA projection.
2011 The word "aggressive" describes Morel's virtues both at the plate and in the field. As a batsman, he's a hacker with excellent plate coverage. While projected as more of a doubles and line-drive power guy, you could see the light go off in his head during his September debut: pulling pitches in the Cell leads to favorable outcomes for right-handed batters. Initial expectations put his homer output as a regular in the teens, but a peak in the 20s wouldn't be a reach. As a glove, he's nothing short of excellent, an all-out acrobat with a gun for an arm. And for all that, he also made it up playing through a torn labrum in his left shoulder, toughing out his promotions and seemingly losing little in terms of performance. With Dayan Viciedo's move across the diamond, Morel's path to the job at the hot corner is relatively clear—he might initially get spotted for by Teahen in obvious platoon-worthy situations, but given that his OBP against right-handers won't have many walks going for it, that's not a bad idea.
2010 Morel is not a high-profile prospect by any means, not as a third-rounder who has consistently put up good-not-great numbers in the minors. Similarly, nothing about his game blows anyone away, but he makes consistent hard contact with gap power—at times a bit more—he runs well for his size, and he plays a solid third base. The sum is greater that the parts because of how few weaknesses there are in his game, and while there is little impact potential, he looks like a future big leaguer.

2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)What should my beer of choice be for Sunday's Fantasy baseball League of Ireland auction? I'm thinking Smithwick's. (yes this is a serious question - such things can decide the fate of a fantasy franchise!)
(Andy McGeady from Dublin, Ireland)
Excellent choice - just practice moderation so you don't end up paying $10 for Brent Morel in an auction as I did in LABR (Jason Collette)
2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Miggie. With my draft Sunday, I am worried he could not be 3B elig. until the end of April. Who is a good late round 3B to draft in case Miggie misses time?
(chiefsalsa from Utah)
Brent Morel or Ty Wigginton for cheap power. Hopefully, you'll only need them 2-3 weeks. I like Morel, but we're also talking about a guy with one good month in his entire career. (Jason Collette)
2012-01-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks, Kevin. How much chance is there Brent Morel maintains the gains he made over the last couple of months last year? I saw him in KC in July, and he got his second walk of the year. Then in August he started walking more, hitting more, and hitting for more power. Great, if it wasn't a mirage.
(GrinnellSteve from Grinnell)
I think he'll be better, but I think his ceiling is a second-division starter. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-03-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Brent Morel or Mark Teahan? Also who do you think ends up as fourth OF for White Sox? I am thinking Lastings Milledge might be a choice.
(bfitzge3 from Upstate NY)
Teahen will likely share time between 3B, RF (whenever Quentin is hurt) and DH, but he's a pretty ordinary player, so Morel should get a fair shot to win the 3B job outright. As far as Milledge goes, I've been a big fan for a long time, and I'm not convinced he can't do a reasonable Alex Rios impression one of these days, at least offensively. I mean that as a compliment... in other words, he'd be an excellent fourth OF. (Cory Schwartz)
2011-02-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Ken: Looking at possible "sleeper" prospects. Do any of the following have a chance to make a n impact this season or next? How would you rank them?: Brent Morel, Brett Laurie, Zack Cox, and Jared Goedert. Thanks for the pre-preseason chat.
(Dan46S from Boston)
Career value ranking for me would be: Lawrie, (gap), Cox, Morel, Goedert. But in the short term, Morel is the most likely to help this year since he has the inside track on the 3b job, though I bet Lawrie will be playing in Toronto in 2012. Cox is some distance away and scouts don't seem to like him, and I'm not sure if the things he does help you in fantasy baseball as much as they do in real baseball. Goedert may have a shot at playing time this year but I don't think that much of him, and Chisenhall is the long-term answer. (Ken Funck)
