2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Nick Noonan isn't likely to live up to his sandwich-round selection, but he played all of the infield positions except first base for Fresno last year, and he could have a future as a utility infielder.
2010 A supplemental first-rounder in the '07 draft—thanks for the memories, Moises Alou, and don't forget to write—the athletic Noonan took another step forward towards adding his name to the crowded post-Sanchez picture at second base. He needs to improve his fielding at the keystone after playing shortstop in high school, but he's acrobatic and promising as a defender. His progress at the plate was masked by his almost desperate struggles against lefties (.198/.262/.270), but to look at the glass as half-full, a guy who hits .282/.355/.444 against right-handers at the age of 20 in High-A is someone who can grow up to do something for you at the plate in the majors.
2009 Noonan could have used some college polish, but instead he took the Giants’ supplemental-round money in 2007. As a result, he’s a project, an unrefined athlete with great speed and gap power but poor instincts, a long, complicated swing, and poor pitch recognition. That would explain the spike in his strikeouts in his full-season debut last year, though the rest of his apparent regression was entirely attributable to his 37-point drop in batting average.
2008 A supplemental first-round pick last year, Noonan was one of the best pure high school hitters in the draft and would have drawn a million-dollar bonus if he played a more premium position; he just doesn't have the skills to play shortstop, but he can really hit, has some power and runs well. The Giants think he has All-Star potential.
