BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Jake Smolinski's mature approach doesn't compensate for his lack of athleticism and tools, rendering him an "org. guy" in most evaluators' eyes.
2012 A move out of the infield and to a less-demanding outfield corner did little to stimulate Smolinski’s bat in his first taste of Double-A. Hope remains that some of his doubles will lead to average home-run power as he matures, but his .364 slugging average at Jacksonville set a new career low for the second consecutive year.
2011 Expectations that Jake Smolinski's line-drive stroke would start producing power haven't panned out, and a late-season move to left field bodes even worse.
2010 Drafted by the Nats, Jake Smolinski headed south in the Willingham/Olsen trade. He missed quite a bit of time the last two years recovering from every injury this side of being mauled by a lion, but he has good pop for a middle infielder—if he's a middle infielder. His defense at second base was fringy, so the Marlins moved him to third base, where he fielded .879.
2009 Jacob Smolinski is a line-drive hitter, not blessed with speed and not likely to develop much power, who was traded to Florida in the Willingham deal.
