BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Marteís introduction to the majors included the good and bad sides of his aggressive nature. He homered on the first pitch he saw in the bigs, and showed off his ability to hit for power throughout his stay. But Marte also showed a tendency to swing and miss, fueling an unacceptable strikeout rate in the face of his paucity of walks. Swinging at bad pitches is a concern that dates back to his days on the farm. With all that said, Marte still managed to hit like a league-average batter. He has the tools to become an above-average corner outfielder; he just needs some additional refinement first.
2012 Marteís exit from an in-progress game in late July caused the internet to stir with curiosity. He hadn't been traded, just disciplined for violating a team rule. That incident was the only blemish on an otherwise strong campaign for Marte, who showed that he had no residual effects from a broken hamate bone. Marteís hand-eye coordination is top-notch and he hits for a high average because of it, but the blessing is a curse when he becomes too aggressive at the plate. Scouts think he can develop more power, and his defensive palette features a healthy mixture of outstanding tools and instincts. Marte even manages to atone for low walk rates by crowding the plate, and 60 pitches have struck him since 2007. He should start in Indianapolis and a major league promotion is likely.
2011 A potential impact defender in center field, Starling Marte had his 2010 season interrupted by surgery to repair a broken hamate bone, but the 22-year-old's possibilities are still bright. The potential five-tool player will be summering at Double-A this season.
2010 Dominican Starling Marte made an excellent state-side debut, flashing the strong arm and athleticism that led the Bucs to sign him in 2006; his OBP was boosted by his taking one for the team as frequently as he drew walks.

2014-07-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)Better young outfield now and in the future. Gregory Polanco, Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte vs. Marcell Ozuna, Christian Yelich and Gincarlo Stanton?
(Drew from Rockford, IL)
Pirates now, maybe Marlins next year, Pirates after that. Because are we to assume Stanton stays in Miami? Because with five bazillion trade rumors in the last two years, one of 'em's gotta be true. (Matt Sussman)
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which longterm contract with paw print tattoos would you rathe have? Jedd Gyorko or Starling Marte?
(Callie Fornya from Vermont)
I didn't love either at the time, but Marte is the guy I'm buying between the two. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-05-29 19:30:00 (link to chat)Who wins this trade in a dynasty: Jason Heyward & Tyson Ross OR Cole Hamels, Starling Marte, Nick Williams, and Nick Kingham?
(Dynasty Trade from Tradeville USA)
I think Ross is poop so give me the second side. Nick Williams might not know left from right field but he can hit. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Are you buying into Starling Marte in dynasty leagues? 20/40 potential?
(Evan from California)
I love Marte. 20/40 seems extreme, but it's not in the long run. I wouldn't expect Marte to hit for that type of power in 2014, though. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Starling Marte going to be the Robin to Cutch's Batman? Or should we expect him to come back to earth this year?
(Tony from Work)
The pepper to McCutchen's salt, the eggs to his ham, the Ernie to his Bert, the Hardy to his Laurel, the Naked Gun 2 1/2 to his Naked Gun, the (Matthew Kory)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Gregory Polanco ultimately become the regular center or rightfielder for the Bucs?
(Paul from DC)
Does he or should he? He probably should, and is the best center fielder of him, Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte (which is incredibly high praise), but he wonít push Cutch out of center anytime soon. Thatís what winning an MVP will do for you, and Cutch isnít exactly a slouch out there. (Jeff Moore)
2014-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Good to here Polanco may be the best fielder of the three in PIT, but where do you come down on his ultimate offensive upside?
(Shawn from Lynchburg)
He'll be the dynamic leadoff hitter that Starling Marte isn't patient enough to be. (Jeff Moore)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)Keeper lge: rank these please: Gregory polanco, Avisail Garcia
(Minor league guy from Lake villa, IL )
In a keeper league, it's Gregory Polanco and it's not particularly close. Polanco has 25-30 SB potential and could wind up being another Starling Marte for the Pirates. Garcia could be an OK power/speed guy, but I have some questions about what if he's ever going to steal enough for the fantasy side of the equation. Definitely Polanco for me. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)This was asked to Parks on his chat, but do you prefer Starling Marte or Gregory Polanco (aside from the fact Marte is already in MLB)?
(The Dude from Office)
I'll go on the opposite end for this. I prefer Gregory Polanco. I think that Polanco has the potential to be an All-Star Level player. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-03-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Drop Starling Marte for Domonic Brown? Too close to call? Or drop Marte for Matt Cerpenter? (Espinosa and Rutledge are my 2B)? Thanks.
(Chris from Toronto)
No and no. Don't bail on Marte - he has more upside than any of those guys for fantasy. (Bret Sayre)
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)Is Starling Marte going to break out this year? I don't see him as a great leadoff hitter, even if he can sustain a .300+ BA
(redguy12588 from Pittsburgh)
See my last... he has a ton of ability but controlling the strike zone is not one of them. People talk about guys like Braun and Trout as once-in-a-generation talents, but so was Alfonso Soriano... very few hitters can be impact players with such terrible K-BB numbers. That's not to say Marte can't or won't be an impact player this year, but let's just say I'm not giving up on Alex Presley yet, either! (Cory Schwartz)
2013-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What exactly is Starling Marte? He could be anywhere from Stubbs to Fowler to Ellsbury, IMO. Thoughts? Thanks for taking my question!
(Sean from New Jersey)
I don't expect he'll strike out as much as Stubbs. Fowler is a really interesting one. My first thought was speed won't be much a part of his game, but Fowler's speed stats seem really Coors-driven with the triples but lack of steals in a good hitting park. Put them in the same environment and I guess you could see some similar things. (Zachary Levine)
2013-03-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Harry, What are your thoughts on the long term prospects for Starling Marte and Zack Cozart.
(dhorrell1956 from Winston-Salem, NC)
solid but not stars (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-03-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Matt, Enjoy the chats alot. Who do you consider the best choice in a dynasty league without regard to position. Lance Lynn, Trevor Cahill or Starling Marte.
(dhorrell1956 from Winston Salem, NC)
Thanks, I enjoy the questions a lot. I'm really not a fantasy guy, but I do like me some Starling Marte. So take that for what it's worth. Also I'd think in dynasty you'd be concerned with injuries and so I'd suggest staying away from pitching prospects. (Matthew Kory)
2013-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)As a Pirate fan, do I have any reason to think any of our potential outfielders not named Andrew will be above average major league players? i.e. Snyder, Tabata, Marte?
(fgbaloh from Allentown)
fgbaloh, the good news is that those guys are all young. The bad news is... Jose Tabata has teased but seems to have plateaued. Travis Snider is not a bad gamble, but as with Tabata, he looks more like a role player to me. Starling Marte could be something. Scouts love him, PECOTA loves him, I have concerns about his plate discipline. But yeah, there's hope with him. (Geoff Young)
2013-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on two Pirates corner OF, Starling Marte and Travis Snider? Is this finally the year Snider produces? Can Marte have a productive 20-20 season this year?
(MJ from Pittsburgh)
I don't expect much out of Snider. PECOTA says .264 TAv with middling defense, and I don't say otherwise. That's not awful, but it's below-average in an outfield corner. R.J. Anderson wrote about Marte today, so I'd recommend reading what he had to say. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-09-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Has Polanco passed Josh Bell as a Pirate prospect and do you think either will have a better career than Starling Marte?
(rogero from Philly)
Yes; I think Polanco has passed Bell, but that could change when a healthy Bell gets his traction at the professional level. I doubt either will have a better career than Marte. (Jason Parks)
2012-10-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Starling Marte, does he have a reasonable shot at being an All Star at some point in his career?
(Paul from DC)
Sure, plenty of good-not-great players have strong first halves and make the All-Star Game. I don't expect him to turn into a superstar, but he does a lot of things well. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-08-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Starling Marte, am I crazy to think that he could put up a line similar to McCutchen with more power and a lower OBP?
(redguy12588 from Pittsburgh)
Nah, he isn't a star for me, more of a good regular. That said, I do enjoy watching him play and like the idea of he and McCutchen roaming the same outfield for the next few years. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Derek- which rookies currently in the minors do you see having the biggest impact this season? Any do you see any of them as upgrades from say Cameron Maybin or Ted Lilly (bottom of my roster)? Thanks
(DanDaMan from SeaCliff)
At this point, it's pretty much all about opportunity. The Trouts and Harpers of the world are already here, and now it becomes a waiting game for a lot of guys. With Tabata getting demoted, that time could be now for a guy like Starling Marte. Some other names to consider: Wil Myers, Ryan Lavarnway (if traded out of Boston), Danny Hultzen, Jake Odorizzi, Jedd Gyorko, Johnny Giavotella, Mike Olt, Travis Snider. It's a gamble dropping an established big leaguer for one of those guys, but in a shallower league where they're just bench players anyway, gambling on some upside isn't a bad idea. (Derek Carty)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have a farm system draft coming up for an NL only league. Is Starling Marte worth the pick?
(Jerome from T Hills)
Maybe. Look at this picture of Bill Duke instead: http://www.wearysloth.com/Gallery/ActorsD/4978.gif (Jason Parks)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)I understand that the significance of spring numbers falls somewhere between very little and balls - but for a minor leaguer, does their approach, on a scouting level, against significantly more advanced pitching mean something? I'm thinking specifically of Starling Marte - who put up good numbers, and also demonstrated his tools in live action against big league pitching. Gotta count for something, right?
(Milby from Das Biergarten)
Excellent comment. Yes; anytime a younger, inexperienced player can face an older, more experienced player, the younger player will benefit immensely. That's why scouting ST is so important. You get to see match-ups that don't normally exist, and the information you can extract from those match-ups is invaluable. (Jason Parks)
2012-02-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)is Starling Marte ready to be a 20-20 guy this season?
(Laurie Fine from Syracuse)
This year? no. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-02-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Cory. Could you please rank the following prospects in order: Anthony Rendon, Josh Bell, Rymer Liriano & Starling Marte. Thanks.
(Ed from Cranford, NJ)
Punting this one to local prospect guru Kevin Goldstein. I will say though that I don't think much of Josh Bell as a prospect, while people are already talking about moving Ryan Zimmerman to 1B to make room for Rendon, so that speaks pretty highly of Rendon. (Cory Schwartz)
2012-01-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Starling Marte only walked 22 times in 530 AB last year, When you see a guy with a walk rate as low as this, is it a red flag as far as not being able to lay off pitches at the next level, even if the K rate is low? I am curious if this is a sign of a hitter that is not yet mature enough to handle MLB pitching, or just an aggressive approach.
(Steve from Huntington Beach)
The approach is obviously the big concern with Marte. For really good hitters like him, it's tough to lay off pitches he actually CAN make contact with. His advancement (or lack thereof) will basically define his ceiling. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)In your opinion would you package Starling Marte for a young 1B since it has been such a black hole for the bucs? What kind of player do you think Marte will become?
(Seth from PA)
I wouldn't trade Marte for a 1B unless that 1B could hit in the middle of a lineup. I'm very high on Marte. Could end up being a first-division player, although some believe that is optimistic. He's an up-the-middle regular at worst and that has a lot of value. (Jason Parks)
2011-12-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better and why, Starling Marte or Robbie Grossman?
(jsdspud from My Desk)
Marte can play a premium defensive position with more skill. Grossman is a Texan and I like that, but he isn't on Marte's level as a prospect. (Jason Parks)
2011-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Lot's of conflicting reports from prospecting mavens recently on Robbie Grossman (BA Calis vs. Fangraphs and now minorleagueball.com). My gut says Starling Marte is the better prospect, but I have to disagree with BA that it's not particularly close. My gut is wrong?
(marjinwalker from DC)
Grossman is tough guy to wrap your head around. He does a lot of things, but has some real weaknesses, and has a weird profile as a corner outfielder. I do like him, however, and I think it's close. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-06-27 14:00:00 (link to chat)Starling Marte -- a future All Star?
(Steve from Pittsburgh)
I like him, but not THAT much. (Kevin Goldstein)
