2013 The haters can point out that Altuve's second half was disappointing, a red flag for a young player, from whom constant growth is expected. Also, he barely survived against right-handed pitching. But there were so many positives for this diminutive keystoner who won't turn 23 until May. He had the seventh-best TAv of qualifying second basemen. He had the 20th-best strikeout rate among all qualifying batters, battered lefties enough to compensate for struggles against northpaws, had a positive BRR thanks to 33 stolen bases and good baserunning, and posted a very good FRAA total. All told, a very well-rounded set of contributions. His size perpetually limits expectations, but even slight improvements in his game—the most likely a rediscovery of some of the power he showed in the minors—will make him one player who legitimately qualifies for the star he wears on his cap.
2012 In 2010, the bantam Venezuelan infielder got his first taste of full-season baseball and smacked around Sally league pitching with a .310 TAv. That earned him an in-season promotion and he held his own in the California League. Proving that even his own organization can be guilty of “profiling,” he was returned to the California League to start 2011, and 238 plate appearances later, the trauma ended for the league's pitchers as he took his .408/.451/.606 line to Double-A. Texas League hurlers weren't much happier to see him in his brief stop in that league. So, on July 20, he became the National League's youngest position player. Altuve is a slick fielder with the tiny strikeout rate one would expect from such impressive hand-eye coordination, and he has much better power than anyone would think possible from such a small player (82 extra-base hits in 952 full-season minor-league plate appearances). If Altuve was 70 inches tall instead of 65, the discussions would be centered around whether he or Dustin Ackley was the best up-and-coming second baseman. As it is, most are still not taking him seriously. Considering how thoroughly he has belittled minor-league pitching in ascending the ranks, such disrespect may be a huge mistake.
2011 After tearing through the Appalachian League in 2009, Altuve had an equally impressive full-season debut. Just 20, he spent the last quarter of the season at High-A and more than held his own with the bat—the results above speak for themselves—while showing tremendous defensive fundamentals. That certainly sounds like one helluva prospect, but you won't find Altuve on any Top 100, and many Astros-specific lists will barely mention him either. The problem is he's listed at five-foot-five, and that's generous. That's his NBA height, if you will. Because of that, scouts understandably have a difficult time wrapping their heads around him. He's certainly adorable, like an athletic teddy bear, but there is no modern precedent for a player of his stature. All he can do is keep performing, which shouldn't be too hard at High-A Lancaster in 2011. We're two years away from knowing if he's truly some kind of mold-breaker.
2010 Altuve is a pint-sized second baseman who was good enough to spark some Rafael Belliard comparisons last summer; he'll have to fill out a bit if he wants to be compared to David Eckstein. Unlike Belliard, however, Altuve can't really handle short, which means he won't have much use to a big-league team unless he can hit well enough to play second everyday. Don't count on it, but root for him—if he makes it, he'd be the shortest middle infielder since Freddie Patek in the '70s.
