YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 When the Angels signed Aybar to a four-year extension, it appeared to be bad news for anybody on the middle-infield depth chart. But it might have been a blessing for Romine, who was never going to hit enough to earn a starting job, but who can walk, run, and certainly field well enough to challenge for a utility/bench role. That role is up for grabs, as Aybar’s extension allowed the Angels to trade Jean Segura midseason. Romine is a very good defensive shortstop, but at Triple-A the Angels started him semi-regularly at third and second base to increase his utility to the big club.
2012 Coming from a baseball family, Romine does a lot of little things—great hands at shortstop, draws walks, steals bases at a good clip, good bunter—but he has been prohibitively poor at one big thing: hitting. Slugging .346 in Salt Lake was the closing statement on his power, and the Angels—sensing Romine would never hit enough to start at shortstop on a $150 million team—began the process of making him useful as a utility player. With Amarista and Izturis ahead of him as utility options, the Angels' crowded infield might keep him riding buses for another season.
2011 Romine leapfrogged Triple-A to make his debut in the majors—where he was reportedly impressed by the quality of the clubhouse bathrooms—when an injury stack overcame the Angels’ infield in late September. Although it owed much to the dire condition of the major-league roster, Romine’s promotion can still be construed as a reward for a job well done, as the shortstop posted the best on-base percentage of his career at Double-A Arkansas. Judging by the two bases he stole with brother Austin behind the plate in an AFL game, he’s quite a competitive fellow; as an above-average fielder with some bat-handling ability (in a “little things” sense) and a willingness to take a walk, Romine likely has a future as a utility infielder, although a major-league homer might prove too much to ask.
2010 Andrew Romine, the brother of Yankees catching prospect Austin, is an above-average defender with an outstanding arm. A speedy switch-hitter, he has decent on-base skills but minimal power.
2009 Andrew Romine isn't much of a hitter, but there is hope that his speed, defense at short, and willingness to take a walk will be enough.
