2013 "Beef" was once the heir apparent to Geovany Soto, whom the Cubs dealt to the Rangers at the trading deadline last year. Castillo kept up his end of the bargain, hitting well for his position in Triple-A and the majors. He faces competition from Steve Clevenger, a converted infielder whose offense has been disappointing even for the position, but who managed to beat out Castillo for playing time in 2012 by virtue of being a left-handed hitter. Castillo has a strong arm but otherwise has a defensive reputation that is mixed at best.
2012 Castillo is following in the Cubs catching prospect tradition begun by Geovany Soto, playing badly (hitting bottom in 2009) before improving his aggressiveness—and with it his power—with an assist from minor-league hitting instructor Von Joshua. Now Welington is one of those rarest of entrees, a catcher who should end up hitting medium-well in the majors. His glove is still a work in progress, even though he's caught a good percentage of attempted base thieves in the minors.
2011 If the Cubs shop Soto, Castillo is first in line to take his place, but only just; as his 2009 line reveals, his career has not been one of inexorable progress. Castillo's strengths are straightforward enough: he's young, he has bopped a bit, and he's strong-armed, thwarting 39 percent of opposing stolen-base attempts at Iowa. There are negatives, though, like his sloppy receiving skills and his struggle to hit quality breaking stuff, and that last year's improvements didn't come in prospect-laden Double-A, but against against the older dead-enders that hold on at Triple-A. Still, we're talking about a young catcher with some power and a strong arm, so a Miguel Olivo-like upside isn't unrealistic.
2010 Welington Castillo has a solid defensive rep (he threw out 44 percent of SB attempts) and some thunder in his bat, but a hacktastic approach is undermining his chances to be anything more than a backup catcher on a second-division team.
2009 Notionally a catching prospect, Castillo's prospect status is defined by the tools of ignorance and his ability to wear them well. Unfortunately, he's a haphazard receiver with sloppy footwork; a strong arm and a quick release make him a good deterrent against the running game, but he's not yet a good catcher, and his blend of hack-happiness and merely modest pop doesn't translate into the kind of talent who might play regularly someday.
2008 Welington Castillo was perhaps the best defensive catcher in the Midwest League last year. He's not going to be a stud, but he may have just enough line-drive power to become something interesting.

2013-12-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)With only a handful of catching stars and many of the current crop looking at position changes in the not too distant future, which of the young catchers do you see stepping up to the elite? Do you think Wilson Ramos is in that conversation?
(Scott from LA)
Ramos is a good guess. Probably the best guess, actually. I don't think Welington Castillo will become elite, but I think people slept on how good he was last season. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-01-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the time, Josh. As someone who hates wasting a pick chasing the good catchers, who do you like as a usually undrafted or late-round catcher? And feel free to tell me my strategy is not wise.
(Catcherless from In The Rye)
I wouldn't ever rule out taking a player at any position if value presents itself. I'd probably try to target someone just after the premier names go off the board. As for cheap catchers that could surprise, I like Welington Castillo. (Josh Shepardson)
