2011-10-31 13:00:00Word out of St. Louis is that TLR made his decision around the beginning of August -- AFTER the Rasmus trade. Do you think they'd have been as willing to go all-in by moving a potential star who didn't get along with the manager if they'd know TLR wasn't coming back?
(Bill from New Mexico)
That's a great question and not one I can easily answer from my vantage point here, but the trade is still solid even if they know TLR is out the door. They had outfield depth in Allen Craig and Jon "Chief Justice" Jay and a fatal shortage of breathing pitchers. And there is every possibility that Rasmus was so disgruntled that he was never going to be gruntled again, regardless of who the manager is, or that they had reached the point where they didn't want to deal with him anymore regardless. I've said this before, but never underestimate the possibility that "I'm sick of you" was the motivation for a trade that is otherwise tough to figure out. (Steven Goldman)
2011-06-20 14:00:00So, do the Cards go and find a 4-6 week replacement for Pujols (Juan Miranda? Casey Kotchman?) or is it Berkman (when healthy) and prayer?
(dianagramr from NYC)
Given the length of time Pujols will be out, I don't see the Cardinals as making a move. I strongly suspect we'll see Berkman playing first base with Allen Craig and John Jay soaking up the bulk of the right field at-bats. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-06-02 13:00:00Where would you rank Allen Craig amongst NL 2B once he gets eligibility?
(KD from Loop)
Depends how much they play Schumaker. If the PT gets split relatively evenly, he's probably somewhere in the middle, ahead of guys like Daniel Murphy and Jonathan Herrera, maybe in line with a guy like Darwin Barney. It really depends on the PT, though. (Derek Carty)
2010-02-18 14:00:00Free Allen Craig?
(Dan from St. Louis)
I'm hardly blowing him up, and he's not in my Top 100, but I do find him WAY underrated. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-03-16 13:00:00Do you agree with Tony La Russa's decision to give the third base job to converted outfielder Joe Mather over David Friese or Allen Craig? Friese was in a car accident and couldn't play for a week, but it doesn't seem like TLR ever gave him a chance.
(jbuofm from Peoria)
It's a 4-6 week stopgap play. One issue is that if you give it to a decent prospect and they play well, you're stuck when Glaus returns. By giving it to Mather, you avoid that issue; he's no more than a utility guy, anyway. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-08-20 13:00:00Does Stephen Marek have a chance to be in the closer mix for the Braves over the next few years? He's been touted by at least one well-known baseball analyst as a Top 60 talent (?!), but his numbers (especially since joining the Braves) don't exactly scream "future closer". Also, is Allen Craig of the Cards a solid future big leaguer at third base, or more of a utility type?
(stickman from baltimore)
I've no idea who you are talking about, but Marek isn't THAT good. That said, I think he'll be a solid big league reliever -- just not a closing one. (Kevin Goldstein)
