BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 Pedro Florimon's big contribution to the 2015 Pirates occurred in August, when he hit a walk-off triple against Keith Hessler. That might make things awkward when the two are teammates on the 2017 Long Island Ducks.
2015 Former Twin Pedro Florimon blinked first, losing his good-field, no-switch-hit staring contest to the younger Eduardo Escobar last summer; claimed off waivers by Washington, he'd be capable of providing the Nats with a major-league glove if he hadn't since been claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh.
2014 If you were to take Eduardo Escobar, stretch him out a few inches, inject some home run juice into his bat and insert an extra ring or two under his bark, you’d wind up with Florimon. Of course, only a twisted Bond-villain archetype would actually order such a bizarre and painful transformation, and even if said Bond-villain archetype owned your favorite team (we’re looking at you, South Florida), it wouldn’t get them much closer to a championship. Florimon is smooth and rangy with a little pop, but unless he starts channeling Alex Gonzalez and launching 15 to 20 home runs annually, he makes far too many outs to be a viable starting shortstop for a team that wants to compete.
2013 Florimon went into 2013 as the odds-on favorite to win the Opening Day job at shortstop. This makes sense because he’s a wispy defensive specialist who is 26 years old, had a .318 OBP at New Britain and Rochester last year, and logged a 579 OPS in 150 plate appearances for the Twins, and because Ron Gardenhire does love his wispy middle infielders. Florimon did play relatively under control in the field throughout 2012, committing 19 errors in 156 games across three levels and maintaining his excellent range, so he could prove a decent enough stopgap until the Twins manage to develop or trade for someone better.
2012 Pedro Florimon got his first call to Baltimore in September, more a sip than a full cup of coffee. While he's come a long way since his days as a scrawny free-swinger at Single-A, he strikes out far too often for a middle infielder with little power—but then they can't all grow up to be Robert Andino.
2011 In an act of pathological optimism, the Orioles placed Pedro Florimon Jr. on their 40-man roster and kept him there all year. A supposed defensive whiz despite a .937 fielding percentage in nearly 500 career games, Florimon's chances of hitting enough to stick in the major leagues are about the same as that of an elephant mating with your tabby and producing a pachycat with whiskers and a trunk who answers to the name, "Mr. Jumbo Muffin-Paws."
2010 This skinny shortstop got himself back onto prospect lists with a dramatically improved 2009, but we're still skeptical. All of the gain came in April and May, when he hit .308/.377/.589; for the rest of his year he reverted to .228/.289/.304, in line with the disappointing Delmarva player we saw the last two years. He does have great range and a strong arm, but makes a ton of errors—no shortstop in High-A or above made more.
