| 2011-08-04 13:00:00 | Did the Astros trade Hunter for Pence on the pound sterling? Feel free to use that one. What one? (Simpsons reference) (Tbirds from Seattle) | Joke and Simpsons reference aside, the Astros got a very nice return on Pence. Kevin Goldstein had both Jarred Cosart and Jonathan Singleton among his top five prospects traded at the deadline, with Josh Zied among his potential sleepers. By comparison, the Astros got only one of the top 10 prospects dealt in the Michael Bourn deal (Brett Oberholtzer) plus one sleeper (Paul Clemens) AND they had to take on Jordan Schafer, who is the most obvious Astro in the history of obviousness. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2011-06-20 14:00:00 | With all the hitting coaches being fired, when will Larry Parrish be shown the door by the Braves?
He's taken one of the best offenses from last season, had Melky Cabrera withdrawn and Dan Uggla added, and has turned them into one of the worst this season. (Nick Carter from London) | It's never clear how much impact a hitting or pitching coach can have on a team, so it's very tough to lay their problems at the feet of one, not that they don't as a means of scapegoating somebody when things get rough. Did Parrish tell Uggla to start swinging with his eyes closed? Did he trade Yunel Escobar for the hacktastic Alex Gonzalez? Did he drive Nate McLouth's career off a cliff? Cause Jason Heyward's injury woes? Force anyone to play Jordan Schafer?
The bottom line is that I'm very skeptical the Braves' offensive woes owe much to Parrish, though I suspect they'll make an example of him anyway if their fortunes don't turn. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2011-06-14 13:00:00 | Hi Ben
What do you think will happen to Jordan Schafer once Nate McLouth returns from the DL? Also, what do you think of Brad Hand going forward? Thanks. (Ed from Cranford, NJ) | Once McLouth returns, Schafer will either be cast into the fires of Mount Doom or relegated to glorified fourth-outfielder status. The latter is more likely.
I'm not particularly excited about Hand this season (he may have been promoted prematurely) but at least now that he's arrived, Marlins fans can stop complaining about having no hand--no hand at all! Yes, I answered this question so I could link to a Seinfeld clip. (Ben Lindbergh) |
| 2010-07-01 14:00:00 | Jordan Schafer. Stick a fork in him? (Paul from DC) | Well, at least hold the fork over him, and threaten him with a puncture. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2010-04-01 13:00:00 | ut-oh. A-Jax looks good for the tigers and is going to break camp at the top of their lineup, how quickly do the yanks regret this deal? (workermonkey from CT) | What did Jordan Schafer hit in spring training last year? (Steven Goldman) |
| 2010-02-23 13:00:00 | What to make of Jordan Schafer? The severe contact problems indicate he wasn't ready last year. Or is it more than that? Is his porspect status fading fast at 23? (rogero from philly) | He wasn't ready and he was also hurt, trying to play through a wrist problem, which as we discussed earlier probably isn't the wisest thing to do. His future is still an open question, and if you can't outplay Melky Cabrera you really don't deserve a job. He's going to have to go back to Triple-A and show what he can do when healthy before he gets the chance to even try... (Steven Goldman) |
| 2010-01-28 14:00:00 | Is Jordan Schafer ever going to be a "bright spot" in the Braves' outfield? (Christopher from Nashville) | Absolutely. Perhaps it'll have to wait until 2011, but it's going to be worth waiting for, the early failure aside. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-10-13 14:00:00 | What do you think the Braves should be doing this off-season? Thoughts on Jason Heyward being given the reins for CF, if he has a good ST? (Perry from Atlanta) | The speculation has been they'll shop a starter, which makes sense to me, given that they control Hudson for 2010 if they so choose, but Vazquez for only that long as well. Trading Lowe would be strange, having only just added him, but it might also yield the best value. The real question is what they go for--Heyward's going to be in right, not center, and they can always consider shunting McLouth to left if they trade for a center fielder. Dealing Vazquez for a one-year rental of a big-time bat for left field could work, with McLouth handling center and 2011's center-field chores going to Jordan Schafer after he regroups from a derailed 2009. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-05-21 14:00:00 | Why the hate on Jordan Schafer? Obviously struggling right now, but no potential over the next 5 years? Didn't you guys have him as a Top 40 prospect? (Dan from Nation's Capital) | I speak for myself, not BP or Kevin. Schafer was rushed to the majors--he didn't exactly eat up Double-A--and doesn't have the contact rate or power to play. I think he's a tweener--good fourth outfielder or marginal starter. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-05-12 13:00:00 | Rookie Atlanta CF-er Jordan Schafer has 23 walks and 43 Ks in 108 ABs, while hitting .217BA/.357OBP/.340SLG. He needs more A) time against MLB pitching; or, B) seasoning in AAA in order to straighten out his swing? (Paul from DC) | The thing I wonder about is his playing with an injured wrist. If that's holding him back, above and beyond any adjustment problems he might be having, it's not in anyone's interest to let him continue. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2009-04-13 14:00:00 | Braves look very good early. I loved their offseason, getting Lowe and Vazquez (and NOT getting Burnett/Furcal). Are they a legitimate threat, even with Bobby mismanaging the hell out of the pen so far? Or a mirage? (Chad from NYC) | I really liked both of those rotation acquisitions -- particularly Lowe, whom the Dodgers will really miss -- and I think they're a Wild Card threat. Chipper, McCann, and Johnson are among the league's most productive players at their positions, and I like the bold move of going with Jordan Schafer to start the year. I worry about their bullpen, too, particularly if Soriano isn't healthy. And I'm not ready to buy into the idea that Jeff Francouer has turned a corner (.240/.269/.520 with just one walk so far). (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2009-04-10 16:30:00 | Thank you for the chat, Christina. Who do you like better over the next few years: Colby Rasmus or Jordan Schafer? Is it even close? (Dennis from LA) | Schafer by a country mile, with no slight intended for Rasmus. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-11-24 15:00:00 | I'm confused, Caleb. Did you say Jordan Schafer (.269 in AA this year, with 10 homers, 12 steals in 17 attempts) can "step in and start this season"? Wouldn't Schafer be horribly overmatched in the majors right now? Thanks for taking my call. (Benton Quest from Montevideo) | It might be a bit of a stretch. Schafer started slow after coming back from his steroids suspension, but then really hit well down the stretch. If not this season, he should be ready by 2010. He's a little underrated now because of the suspension. (Caleb Peiffer) |
| 2008-08-20 13:00:00 | You recently wrote about Jordan Schafer in Monday's 10 pack. Is he still a viable candidate to break with the team in 2009 as the starting centerfielder or does he need to prove himself some more maybe in AAA next season? (thegame92797 from lynbrook, ny) | I think breaking camp with the big league squad would take something pretty phenomenal. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-06-23 12:00:00 | Gorkys Hernandez or Jordan Schafer as Atlanta's centerfielder of the future? (Mike from Atlanta) | Gorkys Hernandez. We'll always wonder now if Schafer's 2007 was legit or not after he got bushted for HgH. I think Schafer will be in a different organization by the start of next season. (John Perrotto) |
| 2008-06-23 12:00:00 | So Rich Hill and Matt Murton to the Braves for Jordan Schafer? (Nate from Work) | No, Cubs need to use those guys to acquire more immediate help (John Perrotto) |
| 2008-03-26 12:00:00 | Another question- do you think Jordan Schafer will be called up this season and what would you expect from him? (Jim from RI) | Yes, I think Schafer will be called up this season, if nothing else because the hype machine has been churning since before the Arizona Fall League and Atlanta might have some need at that position. I won't expect barely anything from him this season -- just the usual getting acclimated to Major League lifestyle. (Bryan Smith) |

Love your Transaction Analysis... Speaking of transactions...do the dodgers keep A. LaRoche on the roster if they give the job to Nomar? Why would you give the job to Nomar?
Short term? Who do you like better this year...Rick Ankiel, WMO Pena or S. Hairston?
Also, down the road..M. LaPorta or I. Stewart or the kid in Atlanta - Schafner? (BMcG from NY) | Thank you, I'm always gratified by compliments.
I wouldn't waste LaRoche's time with a spot on the bench, should Ned and Joe elect to make that kind of mistake; as Earl Weaver might observe about backups in general, Las Vegas is only a phonecall and a short flight away. As for the middle question, one of those things is not like the others, so let's take Hairston out of the equation right off. Between Ankiel and Wily Mo, I'd pick Ankiel, not despite his career path being so extraordinary, but perhaps because of it. I don't know if we know how good he can be yet. No slight of Wily Mo intended--he might turn out to be a totally solid everyday left fielder this season. Finally, we have another broke-leg trio there, because Stewart doesn't belong in a comparison to LaPorta or Jordan Schafer. I'd take Schafer, which again isn't a slight of LaPorta's obvious gifts as a hitter, but because it's easier to find a guy who can hit and play left than a guy who might be a star in center field. | 2010-04-05 09:30:00 | Season Opener Roundtable | Yatchisin (Realityville): Not to bust anyone's Heyward excitement, but Jordan Schafer hit a home run opening day last year. Heyward came into the year ranked as the #2 prospect on our Top 101 list. He controls the strike zone better, has much more power, and is much more advanced at 20 years old than Schafer was at 22 last year, when he came into the year as our #50 prospect (down from #17 the year before).
