2013 Extreme sinkerballer Bobby Cassevah’s surprise emergence as Scioscia’s favorite bullpen toy didn’t survive contact with 2012, as his awful peripherals caught up to him, and losing his manager’s faith in a very brief stint in the majors was followed by losing his manager’s faith in Triple-A.
2012 Thrust into high-leverage roles by Mike Scioscia's unpredictable whims, Cassevah seemed to figure out a plan for dealing with troublesome lefties: he simply walked the bulk of them and hoped for a double play from the next guy. It worked in 2011: he got 10 double plays in 39 innings, the best rate in baseball. Only Jonny Venters and Brad Ziegler had higher groundball rates than Cassevah, whose two-seam fastball didn't miss bats but tended to find infielders. By September, Cassevah had the seventh inning to himself, and the Angels would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for those occasional groundballs sneaking through holes. He blew a lead in his penultimate appearance, then contributed to the epic September 25 bullpen meltdown against the A's, which effectively ended the Angels' playoff hopes.
2011 Lefties crushed Cassevah to the tune of a 963 OPS in their 51 major-league plate appearances against him last season, working five walks (one of them intentional) against only one strikeout. On their own, 51 PA don’t constitute a trend, but susceptibility to southpaws has always been Cassevah’s bugaboo. The sinkerballer kept the ball down both before and after batters made contact, leading all Angels with at least 20 innings in ground-ball rate (meaning that he managed to best even a Dave Duncan-ized Joel Pineiro in that category). Cassevah limited righties to a 463 OPS, and he’s capable of succeeding for multiple innings at a time if deployed correctly. Facing more lefties than righties, as he did last season, doesn’t qualify as “correctly,” but teams are wise to his weakness, and will often be willing to pinch-hit against him in order to gain the platoon advantage, as they did five times in 2010.
2010 Bobby Cassevah's ground-ball rate got him snagged by the A's in the Rule 5 draft, but his extreme problems with lefties suggest ROOGYdom at best.
