YearComment

2013 A June series in Colorado is credited as the turning point of Zimmerman’s season, which ended up being excellent despite a slump of nearly three months. He entered Coors Field with a 597 season OPS, but went 7-for-19 with two homers in the four-game set and his season took off. In the 89 games starting with that series, Zimmerman hit .319, posted a 967 OPS, and popped 22 of his 25 home runs. He had nursed a shoulder injury through the bulk of his slump, and may have benefited from a well-timed cortisone shot. The franchise cornerstone is in the thick of his prime and should remain a star-level talent for several more years.
2012 Season stat lines are really misleading. In a great many cases, they don't really tell you anything interesting or accurate at all. There was almost no time during the season when Zimmerman was really a .289/.355/.443 hitter, but that's probably what we'd all use as a baseline to figure out things like future performance, modeling, valuation, or deciding on future actions. Zimmerman's BABIP was 70 points higher in the second half, when he was playing full time, than it was in the first half. Considering that he underwent surgery to fix up a sports hernia, rehabbed and recovered well, and turns 28 at the end of the upcoming season, this could be the place to look for a "surprise" MVP.
2011 Our revamped FRAA jibes with local debate over whether Zimmerman's defensive reputation is more than a little overblown. The face of the franchise doesn't need to be Brooks Robinson, though, considering his development as a hitter has topped expectations; he keeps retaining every improvement he makes along the way, whether mashing righties or drawing more walks. You can't begrudge the Nats their decision to give him a five-year, $45-million deal that runs through 2013, but the challenge for them in the meantime will be to put together a ballclub he'll want to re-sign with, as well as one generating enough local revenue to make the proposition practicable, because MVP-caliber twenty-somethings never go out of style on the open market.
2010 A walking, talking Web Gem, Zimmerman has finally stepped up his offensive game to the elite level that’s long been anticipated, which combined with his ever-artistic leatherwork gives Washington one of baseball’s most valuable and most entertaining commodities. His gains at the plate don’t look like a fluke: the increased walk rate looks like sustainable progress, and a seven percent increase in his fly-ball rate points to his finally taking full advantage of his raw power potential. Perhaps most importantly, he overcame a career-long struggle by posting a .298/.361/.545 line against right-handed pitching. Now that Zimmerman's just turned 25, these improvements coupled with David Wright’s power outage makes identifying the National League's best young third baseman a much more interesting topic of conversation.
2009 Every Nationals' player except Nick Johnson started the season ice cold—through April, Johnson was the only Nat regular with an above-average EqA. Zimmerman's was mired at .224. For the rest of the year he hit at essentially the same level that he'd established in 2006-07; the downturn looks more severe because he missed nearly two months with a shoulder injury from a headfirst slide (why? why? why?), and never had sufficient time to balance out the cold start. Another year without noticeable improvement makes it seem more likely that he'll be just a very good third baseman, and not a David Wright-level star.
2008 Of the 33 double plays turned (but not started) by all major league third basemen last year, Zim turned seven, the most in a single season in our database, which reaches back to 1959. That was a reflection of Manny Acta's aggressiveness in every phase of the game, as the skipper played the shift on lefty pull hitters more than any manager of recent memory, a gambit which paid off in part because of Zimmerman's shortstop-level athleticism. Six of those DPs were 4-5-3s (three hit by Ryan Howard, two by Carlos Delgado, and one by Adam Dunn), the last was a 6-5-3 hit into by Barry Bonds. Zim isn't perfect-he could do better charging bunts-but he's already among the best gloves at the hot corner in the game today, and he has the gifts to become one of the game's all-time greats in the field. Oh, and he can hit a bit too, although last season's struggles against right-handers involved a few too many weakly pulled grounders (and far too many GIDPs of his own) to give him a free pass on the step down from his rookie year. He spreads his fly balls around, so his new home's closer power alleys could make for a performance spike, as RFK doubles become Nationals Park souvenirs.
2007 Zimmerman is a tremendous ballplayer. Losing the Rookie of the Year award to Hanley Ramirez doesn`t mean he won`t have the better career. Some nervous nellies started tearing out their hair over a few early errors afield, but Zimmerman`s range, touch, soft hands, and on-field anticipation rate with the best in the league. Add in that he was the Nats` best hitter when it came to plating runners (scoring 18.8 percent of the men on base when he batted), and you`ve got the face of the franchise, for at least as long as the Lerners decide to afford him.
