BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 At his best, Valdez is an anemic hitter. Last year with the Reds, he was not at his best, posting the lowest slugging percentage of any big-league hitter who amassed at least 200 plate appearances. He is not a great defender but plays multiple positions and can even pitch if needed—he won an epic 19-inning game as a Phillie in 2011. He is the new Manny Alexander, only with a worse glove and better control on the mound.
2012 If you’re reading this book, you’ve probably had the experience of trying to explain the concept of “replacement level” to a friend or family member. They usually want to get a real-world comp for replacement level. Valdez is a good example, at least among shortstops. He’s a good explanation of why we assume replacement-level players sport average defense: Valdez certainly plays passable short. He’s a good example of the fact that, while replacement-level players are not free, they can be retained on a series of minor-league or near-minimum contracts. In small doses, he’s good medicine. But if too many injuries stack on the roster, you end up with baseball’s lowest common denominator.
2011 Wilson Valdez is a very good backup mostly due to his strong defensive play, though he did set career highs in both batting average and slugging percentage—for what that's worth.
2010 Our mistake—it was Wilson Valdez who finished the set. If you walked out on the Mets before the credits rolled, you missed the outtake where they up picked Valdez to serve as a multi-position warm body—hilarious! The Phillies signed him to do the same at Triple-A.
2008 A smaller mystery of the Colletti regime is the Dodgers' fascination with this particular futilityman. Yes, he's a speedy slap-hitter who's developed a bit of plate discipline, but 28-year-olds in Triple-A are organizational fodder, not 40-man roster material. Still, the Dodgers protected him after the 2006 season, and their man-crush blossomed when he tore up the Grapefruit League last spring, leading the team in . . . wait, who cares about spring stats? Valdez made the club when Rafael Furcal began the year on the DL, but, surprise, he didn't rediscover his spring mojo until returning to Las Vegas. He clings to the 40-man like a barnacle for reasons clear only to Colletti.
2005 Like some storied regiment of yore named for King or Queen or somebody else's spare Archduke, you can consider Valdez "Ozzie's Own." He made a big impression when Guillen was a coach for Jeff Torborg in Florida, and to the Ozzeroo's credit, where the Fish saw a moody, uncoachable Latin, Guillen saw a ballplayer he could coax out of his shell. He's just a good defensive replacement and pinch-runner, but that can be handy.
