2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Navarro was once a top prospect, but his star faded along the way and he turned into a journeyman. He has problems hitting for average, and even when he does he lacks enough pop or plate discipline to leverage it into a good batting line. He had a good defensive reputation early in his career, but not anymore. The Dodgers ended his second go-round with the team in 2011 for concerns about his work ethic, including a lack of perceived effort on blocking balls in the dirt. With Castillo in the fold, the Cubs can relegate Navarro to a backup role that hides most of those deficiencies.
2012 Elbowed out of town by Russell Martin's emergence in 2006, Navarro returned to LA after both catchers were non-tendered in December 2010, which was rather ironic. Alas, he was unable to recapture his youthful promise. After missing most of April with an oblique injury, he did little to arrest the impression that both his offense and his defense (25 percent caught stealing, below-average pitch framing, and an above-average rate of wild pitches and passed balls) have gone downhill, with a 2009 ulnar nerve injury in his non-throwing elbow one culprit. The Dodgers DFA'd him in late August due to "philosophical differences" borne more of his work ethic than his radical take on Nietzsche.
2011 Off-season surgery to stabilize the ulnar nerve in his non-throwing elbow did nothing to help Navarro's flagging bat, and his failure to hit dropped him behind both Kelly Shoppach and rookie John Jaso on the depth chart, to the point that Navarro was sent to Triple-A in late June. He didn't return until September and left the Rays in a huff after failing to qualify for the playoff roster, so it was hardly surprising that he was non-tendered. Ironically, he signed with the Dodgers after they non-tendered Russell Martin, whose rapid development in 2005 pushed Navarro out of town in the first place. In retrospect, it's worth remembering that the brief bout of plate discipline that made Navarro a desirable commodity—a thing of the past given his career .249/.309/.356 line and seven-percent walk rate—owed plenty to his batting seventh or eighth in front of even less desirable hitters, though the same can also be said for A.J. Ellis, with whom Navarro will battle for the right to back up Rod Barajas.
2010 As the 24-year-old, five-win catcher for a pennant winner, Navarro looked like a real steal, but he spent 2009 as a Replacement-Level Killer due to an ulnar nerve problem in his left elbow which required post-season surgery. Passable against lefties (.279/.304/.436), he was such a gaping vortex of suck against righties (.183/.234/.255 in 254 PA) that he wound up with the lowest EqA of any catcher with more than 155 PA. Defensively, he remained above average despite a caught stealing rate which fell from 38.4 percent in 2008 to 26.5 percent last year. Given the note from his doctor, a rebound is possible, but the acquisition of lefty-mashing Kelly Shoppach suggests playing time is no guarantee.
2009 Once seen as one of the better catching prospects in the game, Navarro had been written off after not getting it done for three years and moving to his third organization. The Rays gave him another opportunity and he finally began to live up to expectations. It seems like he's been around forever, but he's only 25 years old. He has a great contact rate, but he also has a longer track record of struggles than of success. His defensive skills will give him value no matter what direction his bat takes this year.
2008 During the first half of the 2007 season, Dioner hit more like Jamie Navarro, but the Rays stuck with him-not that they had much of a choice-and in the second half, he was one of the more productive catchers in the league, batting .285/.340/.475 after the break. He's a strange hitter in that he hits junk, using his excellent hand-eye coordination to turn on hanging curveballs or take hard sliders the other way, but his bat is a little slow, leaving him behind on good fastballs. It's hard to seem him putting up an 815 OPS over the course of a season, but it's easy to see him being productive enough to be in the middle of the pack among starting catchers.
2007 The Devil Rays acquired Navarro in a mid-season, four-player, C-grade challenge trade with the Dodgers that mercifully released Toby Halls`s grip on the catching position and banished Mark Hendrickson to the other side of the country. In Navarro, they picked up a player that still has some upside, though for the moment it all seems to be tied up in his plate discipline. His defense in Los Angeles was problematic, and his power simply hasn`t materialized. Still, he`s just 23, and even if that .265/.341/.402 PECOTA is his limit, that`s more than the Rays have ever gotten from their catchers in the club`s nine-year history. Navarro didn`t hit much after the trade, but he can be excused as, just days after he arrived in Tampa, his SUV--which also contained his wife and nine-year-old son, both of whom have survived serious illness in recent years--was rear-ended and flipped twice. Fortunately, Navarro and his family were unharmed.
2006 Acquired in the Shawn Green deal, Navarro`s performance in his first extended taste of big-league action was a rare positive in the Dodgers` otherwise dismal season. Not only did he hit for average, he took a big leap forward in the plate discipline department, almost reaching the golden ratio of one unintentional walk for every ten PAs. It`s important to remember that all of this happened in just 199 plate appearances after an altitude-inflated half-season in Las Vegas, and to note that despite an otherwise acceptable defensive performance, he struggled to control the running game (21.4 percent kill rate). But as 22-year-old catchers go, he`s a keeper, especially on a team that wasted over 400 PAs on Jason Phillips.
2005 Very young, he burned a year with a case of bigleagueitis. His reputation rests entirely on 110 games at A-ball and Double-A in 2003, and there is the possibility that he had a minor league catcher/Daffy Duck "I can only do this trick once" season. His offensive game is centered entirely around batting average, so until that comes up there's really no point in getting excited. Dealt to Arizona in the Randy Johnson deal, then flipped to the Dodgers, where he'll have a much clearer path to the majors.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)So...it may be slightly unlikely that John Jaso keeps hitting like the second coming of Barry Bonds. But how do you see his final line shaking out, as well as playing time at catcher for the Rays?
(Stephanie from DC)
Probably better than Kelly Shoppach and Dioner Navarro's lines. I think he can hit maybe .270/.370/.430. The OBP is sexy. I'm talking to Tommy Bennett right now, he says .280/.340/.430. Obviously, he's going to slug .430 if we both say so. (Marc Normandin)
2010-03-10 18:00:00 (link to chat)Any big plans this weekend?
(Miguel Montero from PHX)
Well Miguel, it's funny you should ask, because I'm actually headed to Chi-town this weekend for the annual draft in the Strat-o-Matic league in which I partake, and it just so happens that with my 4th overall pick in the draft and my dire need for a catcher (thanks, Dioner Navarro and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, really!) you and Jorge Posada keep popping up as potential choices. (Eric Seidman)
2009-12-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Have you given up on Dioner Navarro?
(ackbar from outerspace)
No. (Bandwagon!) He's a .275/.340/.400 guy with good defense. He's been all over the map, of course, but basically he's a plus catcher. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)The most disappointing performances this year from non-injured players are...... The best non-Heyward hitting prospect is.......
(Fred from Burnaby, BC)
Dioner Navarro... Pedro Alvarez (b/c I'm biased)... (Shawn Hoffman)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)Will the Dodgers be dumb enough to trade Kemp? Hu? LaRoche?
(Guido from Charleston, WV)
I think this is a battle for the soul of the franchise. If Ned Colletti makes another Dioner Navarro deal with one of those guys, I think the Dodgers lose Logan White within the year, and it gets very dark and cold up from Sunset Blvd. If Colletti doesn't do that, perhaps White gets elevated into the GM's chair, and the Dodgers become the Red Sox West in three years. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Tell me I'm not screwed with these two catchers please: JR Towles and Dioner Navarro. I know they were on your underrated list but I couldn't get one of the top 4 guys so I decided to wait until the last two rounds to get catchers.
(Steve from North Dakota)
you could do a lot worse, don't make a trade just because you hate your catchers, give them time and take from there. (Mike Siano)
2008-03-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)PECOTA was bullish on Dioner Navarro last year and bearish this year. Does his late season surge have you interested in him at all this year?
(theguag from Louisville)
I'll be keeping an eye on him, but I'm not particularly excited about him over other options. The late-season surge does help, but PECOTA does take that sort of thing into account. (Marc Normandin)
