| 2011-10-31 13:00:00 | It seems the fans in St. Louis are a little dissatisfied with Matt Holliday. Is there any chance they explore the trade market for him to free up money for Pujols and hand a starting gig to Craig? (jmarsh from Bloomington, IN) | Good luck if they do, because he's got five more years guaranteed at $17 mil per. That's a commitment for any team, and not a wise one. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2011-09-14 13:00:00 | How long till the Matt Holliday contract with the Cardinals starts entering the same discussion as Zito's and Dunn's? (Benny from Too Far) | Given that Holliday has already had two excellent seasons in St. Louis, I think he's already played his way out of Zito/Dunn territory. The contract only runs through his age-36 season, Holliday keeps himself in excellent shape, and he hasn't yet showed any signs of decline (which both Zito and, to a much lesser extent, Dunn both had even before they signed their contracts), so this could be the rare long-term deal that doesn't lead to too much grief for the team that dispensed it. The last couple years could still be an overpay at $17 million, but I don't see this one ever entering the same discussion. (Ben Lindbergh) |
| 2010-03-18 14:00:00 | Should Cardinals fans be concerned about the fact that Matt Holliday hasn't appeared in any spring-training games in over a week, or is the team just being super-cautious with a guy who's basically ready to go? (Bill from New Mexico) | I think they are just being supercautious. I don't get any indication that he's seriously hurt. (John Perrotto) |
| 2010-02-11 13:00:00 | The Cardinals gotta like David Freese's price? I hope they do...your 2013 St. Louis Cardinals - Matt Holliday, Albert Pujols, and 23 guys making league minimum...like David Freese. (Paul from LA) | That'll only be a problem if the economy doesn't start growing again, or if MLB just doesn't grow over the next few years, for whatever reason. In fact, if I were them I'd be trying to get Albert signed right now, because it's entirely possible that the market will be in much better shape next winter. (Shawn Hoffman) |
| 2010-01-13 13:00:00 | Congrats on the new role, but this question gets back to your traditional "on the beat" one. Did you ever pick up any indications that anyone was seriously in the hunt for Matt Holliday but the Cardinals? Or were they just bidding against themselves? (Bill from New Mexico) | I don't think anyone else was willing to go to $100 million on Holliday, which surprises me that the Cardinals went all the way to $120 million. Also, thanks for the congrats. Can't tell you how excited I am about this new role at BP. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-10-20 14:00:00 | Which team should want Matt Holliday the most? (dtwhite from Toronto) | Any AL Central team except the Royals, because the marginal value of Holliday might be enough to make any of them the division favorite, and he'd play for all four teams. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-10-13 14:00:00 | How valuable do you think Matt Holliday is right now? I'm still not convinced he can be a star outside of Coors Field. Lots of people seem very high on him after his great numbers in 270 plate appearances with St. Louis, but he spent 400 plate appearances doing nothing special in Oakland. (The Flying Bernard from Acton, MA) | I'm with you, in that I'm a bit skittish about getting wild and paying out a five-year deal that might rate push towards the nine-digit range in total value. He peaked with an EqA in the .320 range at the expected time; now, heading into his thirties and perhaps more properly down around .300 from year to year, there's no way I get that crazy. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-10-08 14:00:00 | The Mets have identified Matt Holliday as their number 1A target after John Lackey. So where does he end up - St. Louis for less money or in NY? (Moose from Whippleville, NY) | The Yankees will need a LF, too, and have a ton of money coming off the payroll again. That's not to say he'll end up there, just making the point. I'm not sure there's value in this year's market--good players, not great ones, who will end up overpaid for being best in class.
I have no real idea where Holliday will end up. I guess I should reiterate the point that the reasons these guys sign are often inscrutable to us, comparable to the same reasons any of us might relocate. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-10-06 13:30:00 | Stock question: Where does Matt Holliday wind up? If the answer is not "St. Louis," what do the Cardinals do to replace him? That post-trade surge certainly seemed to make a point about the need for somebody like him. (Bill from New Mexico) | That's a great question. I know he likes St. Louis but I really question whether the Cardinals will be able to carry both Holliday and Pujols on the same payroll. He makes sense for the Yankees but I'm hearing they are not going to bust the bank for him. It will be very intriguing. I think the Angels will be in the fray, too, and might just get him. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-10-06 13:30:00 | John -- Do you think Tony LaRussa will be back with the Cardinals next year? How much of this is contingent on them signing Matt Holliday (of whom Tony is a huge fan)? Or on keeping Dave Duncan around? (Matt from Chicago) | I think La Russa is staying, regardless of Holliday and Duncan. He seemed very content when I caught up him in early September, probably as content as I've ever seen him. I have a gut feeling if they win it all this year, he might retire. He didn't give any hints of that but it's just a suspicion I have. (John Perrotto) |
| 2009-10-02 14:00:00 | What kind of contract would you sign Jason Bay for? I wouldn't want to go longer than 3 years, or 3 with a vesting option. I don't think he will age well into his mid-late 30's. (shall14 from Beverly, MA) | Sorry, folks, connectivity issue.
I would be leery of a long commitment to Bay. His defense hasn't really recovered from the knee injury, which limits his overall value. I'm not a big Matt Holliday guy, but Bay and Holliday will be comps this winter, and while I think Holliday will be overpaid, Bay might be *really* overpaid. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-09-24 14:00:00 | Should Oakland try for a Fielder in a trade? (tonipeluso from Oakland) | You have to build a roster from the middle out. No team with that kind of up-the-middle should spend prospects and cash on a first baseman, and in retrospect, I should have said that about the Matt Holliday trade. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-09-08 13:00:00 | J.J. Hardy to the Red sox makes a lot of sense, no? What would this do to his fantasy value? (tommybones from brooklyn) | He would leave the NL, but he would also enter the best park for doubles in the majors. I think he'd do pretty alright for himself, and the Red Sox would be a much better team for it. Hardy is part of my personal plan to make the Red Sox a more well-rounded club in 2010. Matt Holliday is another obvious part of that, given his glove and similarity to Bay with the bat. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-09-08 13:00:00 | Writer justification for not voting for Pujols: "If he was truly the Most Valuable, how come they didn't start to win until they brought in Matt Holliday? How can he be the Most Valuable if he couldn't carry a team with Chris Carpenter and Wainwright by himself."
Bonus fun fact, John Flahery, when speaking of Jeter's candidacy, intimated that Jeter would suffer from voters not being able to see all the little things he does every day. That's right, he essentially said that Jeter would be underexposed. Keep in mind that his main competition plays for Minnesota. Ugh. (fjm(anuel) from NY) | I don't know if it's a one-year blip, but Jeter's been pretty good defensively this year according to UZR. He's still behind Mauer as far as win value goes, but I just thought it was worth mentioning. The normal gulf between the two doesn't exist, though Mauer's as far ahead of Jeter as Pujols is of Utley. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-08-13 13:00:00 | All right, Steve, what is your forecast for the St. Louis Cardinals from here until their season ends, whenever that may be? (Jake from St. Louis) | I think they're going to hold on and win the division, and their pitching is strong enough that they could surprise in the playoffs. I'm also fascinated by Matt Holliday's post-acquisition hot streak, which is now over 80 PAs, shades of Cesar Cedeno in 1985. I do worry about the pitch-to-contact propensities of everyone except Wainwright and Carpenter if forced to face a superior offense, and you'd like to see them heat up one more bat, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen at this late date. Losing Glaus has really hurt - .222/.291/.376 from Cards' 3Bmen this year. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2009-05-18 14:00:00 | Matt Holliday to the Giants -- possible? (bowie from cal) | Sure, if they climb down and cough up the territorial rights to San Jose plus a worthy prospect or two, I suppose they could talk. Failing that, I'd trade him to the Dodgers for good stuff, just to spite the neighbors. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2009-03-13 13:00:00 | Most think that Matt Holliday is going to be an Athletic for one season at the most. Do you think I can convince him that leaving for greener pastures might be less important than winning? Didn't really work out for me in NY. (Jason Giambi from Oakland) | I expect that money will speak louder and that Billy will happily collect the draft pick... It's hard to say that Giambi's NY sojourn was a bust either -- he didn't get a ring, but overall things were good, and he was popular - far more so than, say, A-Rod, despite some similar problems. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2009-03-03 13:00:00 | What kind of slash stats do you see Matt Holliday putting up this year? I think he will be affected a bit by moving out of Colorado, but still be pretty good (like 290/375/500). (Sorrento from Cleveland) | PECOTA has him down for .291/.366/.492, which is certainly possible. Given his road rates the past three years though (.296/.370/.486), that looks about right, though I wonder how much leaving the NL for the AL and moving to a very pitcher friendly park will affect him. Fantasy wise, if the A's offense is improved like we think it is, at least he'll be able to keep plenty of R and RBI, but the homers and average are definitely shooting down from his usual figures. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-01-29 13:00:00 | What do you make of Matt Holliday's comments about Bobby Crosby swinging the bat well after work out with Mark McGwire? Do the A's still bring in Cabrera (costing them a 2nd round pick) or just go with some combination of Crosby, Pennington, and Petit? (Dave from Chicago) | I'll believe it when I see it. That's not to say I don't trust Holliday, it's just that you hear those kinds of stories all the time, and people seem to still be willing to give Crosby the benefit of the doubt.
I don't think Cabrera is worth the pick. Maybe the A's should just call the Cubs, and send over one of their non-prospects in exchange for another middle infielder they don't want to use. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2008-12-10 14:00:00 | With A's seemingly out of the running for Furcal and stuck with Crosby at shortstop, would you start testing the market for Matt Holliday? (Dave from Chicago) | Too soon. I mean, you always listen, but there's no reason to panic. Besides, there's such a glut of corner OFs that Holliday's trade value wouldn't be that high at the moment. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-09-12 13:00:00 | Hi Christina: If all of them were FA this offseason, who will command the best contract: Sabathia, Sheets, Lackey, Matt Holliday, Dunn, Burrell, Texeira or Ryan Howard? (Joe from Tewksbury, MA) | I don't think anybody on that list could command what Sabathia will get. I think the more interesting question is whether he gets Zito-level money or what. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2008-08-28 13:00:00 | Steven,
How surprised at you that Matt Holliday is flirting with a 30/30 season, despite missing almost a month? He could always run a little but did you ever expect this type of steals production from him? Is this a one year thing or will he continue to run like this? (bateman19 from Boston) | I think it's really cool. In a way, it's always more admirable/exciting when a non-burner picks his spots and has a great basestealing season - Holliday has only been caught once. I mean, Jose Reyes can steal a base when he feels like it, but a player like Holliday really has to pick his spots, so you're not just seeing speed at work, but also smarts. I don't really think this will be a regular thing given his age - he'll go back to his previously established levels. I'm reminded of Kevin McReynolds' 1988... (Steven Goldman) |
| 2008-08-27 13:00:00 | Wikipedia's list of position players who have had Tommy John surgery: Rocco Baldelli, Joe Borchard, Shin-Soo Choo, Chris Denorfia, Rusty Greer, Luis Gonzalez, Matt Holliday, Norris Hopper, Cezar Izturis, Kelly Johnson, Xavier Nady, and Vance Wilson. Also, Jose Canseco could be included but doesn't really count since he blew out his arm while pitching. (Gump from nyc) | Jimmy Wales is a great guy, but .... man, that's a really incomplete list. (Will Carroll) |
| 2008-07-30 12:30:00 | John, In your recent "on the beat" column you mentioned that Matt Holliday has been carrying a miserable offense. Is there any reason to believe that the Rox will make an aggressive move to sign him in the off-season, or is it more likely he is dealt!? thanks. (Carl from Denver) | I think Boras will take him to free agency and look to get a megadeal. (John Perrotto) |
| 2008-07-03 13:00:00 | What starting pitchers (if any) would be an acceptible return for Matt Holliday in a one-for-one trade? I'm in a head-to-head league & thinking about punting average & bolstering my current rotation of Kazmir/Shields/Baker/Duch/Wandy/Buchholz (ted from the cubicle) | Santana/Beckett/Webb/Hamels/Lincecum/Haren/Sabbathia, for sure. Kazmir if he weren't on your team already. I think that the risk of Holliday getting dealt is very real, and looking at his home/road splits, you might want to get out in front of that trade. (Jeff Erickson) |
| 2008-03-05 13:00:00 | What's the earliest you can justify taking your man crush Hart? (Steve from Southfield, MI) | I'd say anytime after Matt Holliday is drafted is fine, assuming he goes where he belongs. You may be better off with Beltran or Sizemore, but probably not significantly so. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2008-02-19 13:00:00 | Should I go for the steady production of a Matt Holliday or Chase Utley or the enormous upside with Ryan Braun, if I want to win this year? And for the next three years? (Will Thompson from Fullerton, CA) | I'd go in that order, but in three years, I'm not sure Braun isn't one of the top five hitters in the game. (Will Carroll) |

| 2010-07-13 16:30:00 | All-Star Game | I'm used to seeing Matt Holliday not catch balls on Fox in prime time games in front of millions. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2009-11-02 17:00:00 | 2009 WS Game Five | Couple years back, Utley's agent gambled with a long term deal. Instead of free agency at the end of this year, he's essentially trading it for a 4 x 15 deal. Honestly, that's not too bad. Matt Holliday's going to get more, but not much more. It's only in comparison to Howard's deal where it looks shabby. (Will Carroll) |

| 2009-10-16 13:00:00 | NLCS Game Two/ALCS Game One | McCarver says Matt Holliday lost it in the lights? That's the first time I've heard that excuse called upon. Looked like he couldn't decide whether to keep the glove up or turn for a basket catch. (Jay Jaffe) |
