2013 Cleveland's affinity for groundball pitchers found a new muse in Albers this offseason. Albers cooks his sinker with gas, averaging 94 mph with late movement that coaxes a steady stream of grounders from opposing batters. He had his most successful season in 2012, with a 20 percent drop in both hits and walks allowed that anchored his stingy run-prevention across both leagues. The net result was an ERA that eclipsed his previous best by more than a run.
2012 Was 2011 a success or failure for the Albers experiment in Boston? The Sox signed a reliever cut loose before his second year of arbitration, one who had below-average strikeout and walk numbers, but an ability to induce grounders, and stuff that suggested strikeouts were possible. He punched out 9.5 per nine with the Red Sox, posting his first K/BB over two, but also imploded in the second half, allowing six of his seven homers over his last 29-1/3 innings. There is a lot to like about Albers despite his warts, and as he remains inexpensive, under team control for one more year. In a bullpen now sans Papelbon, there is no reason for Boston to not give this arm another go.
2011 With a groundward tilt to his pitches, Albers has been good at keeping batters from piling up extra-base hits, but that hasnít stopped them from singling and walking him to death. Given a full season in front of a terrific defense he might show superficial improvement, but that possibility aside, there is no reason to think heís well-suited for any job other than the lowest of low-leverage relief work. The Orioles non-tendered him in December.
2010 Albers hurt his shoulder in 2008 and elected to go through a rehab program rather than surgery. He was intermittently effective, logging a 2.38 ERA through June and July, then giving up two or more runs in five of seven August outings before being sent back to Norfolk, where he continued to be abused by the opposition. Albers is emphatically not suited to be a LOOGY, although an anomalous split line in 2008 led the Orioles in that direction.
2009 Part of the Tejada trade, Albers did a solid job in long relief before shoulder woes cut his season short in June. Diagnosed with a torn labrum, he is attempting to rehab it without surgery. If it works, he'll be ready for spring; if not, he'll miss all of 2009 in addition to the half of 2008 already gone. Albers is in serious contention for a spot in the projected Orioles rotation, which tells you more about the Orioles' options than about him.
2008 In another organization, Albers wouldn't be considered much of a prospect and would likely have spent last year working at Triple-A, but the Astros just don't have much in their system, so Albers jumped from Double-A to the majors in a year, getting just 13 passable starts at Triple-A in between. He has a major league fastball and curve, but lacks command or good mechanics. Shipped to Baltimore in the Tejada deal, he will probably be an overmatched fifth starter for the Orioles this year.
2007 It`s always nice to see a hometown kid make it with the big club. It`s also good to see a player overcome off-field problems (in Albers`s case, some drinking issues he`s already sorted out). Thus there were warm fuzzies all around when Albers was added to the bullpen in August, when the pen was at its most unstable. Unfortunately, he was unable to establish himself as a real option. Still, if he can`t crack the rotation out of spring training, he may wind up back in the pen, which his stuff seems better suited for, even if his demeanor doesn`t.

It should be (Sam Miller)
2011-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)What does Matt Albers have to show in order to make the Red Sox roster as a reliever out of spring training?
(dawson950 from cape cod)
Hey, if the Sox are going to pick up Scott Atchison's option and give him a shot, the bar isn't set that high. He just has to not suck, and hope none of the other guys who are fighting for one of the last bullpen spots puts up big spring numbers or an impressive new pitch. (Marc Normandin)
