YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Basic supply and demand is at work when a career .248 True Average hitter is being heavily pursued by multiple clubs. Hannahan is a glove-first option who has experienced an upturn with the bat in the last two years, moving from awful to something that can be hidden in the nine hole, as long as hes picking everything at third. The vagaries of small samples have done a number on his splits, too, as he crushed lefties and struggled against righties in 2011 only to fail so miserably last year against lefties (481 OPS in 81 plate appearances) that his 712 against righties looked excellent by comparison. Remember: His glove earns him his plate appearances.
2012 Hannahan was brought to Cleveland this past offseason to keep third base warm for Lonnie Chisenhall, but he did more than that, quietly setting the hot corner on fire. The quiet part is due to the fact that he received just a half-season's worth of play (yet still was worth more than three wins) and saw most of his value come from defense. He was merely average with the bat and is unlikely to repeat even that kind of performance, but he's proven enough for the Tribe to bring him back as a backup third baseman and pinch hitter. With near-plus defense, good patience, and fringe-average power, Hannahan should do enough to earn his keep. At least his prep bloodlines are solid. He attended the same high school as Joe Mauer and Hall of Famer Paul Molitor.
2011 Jack Hannahan is 30 and has more organizations than years of major-league service behind him. Despite his ability to draw a walk, his bat is below average even by minor-league standards, but he can play plus defense at third for a team in a bind.
2010 Care for a haiku? Jack Hannahan is/ Good-field, no-hit third baseman/ The crowd snores rainbows. That pretty much describes Hannahan's virtues, as he was acquired in-season after the unsurprising discovery that Chris Woodward wasn't up to the challenge of replacing an injured Adrian Beltre. Batting lefty gives him another weak claim on retention, but the decision to sign Figgins and the presence of Bill Hall limits the applications Hannahan might fulfill on the M's bench, placing his spot on the 40-man at risk.
2009 A career minor leaguer in the Tigers system, Hannahan was acquired at the end of 2007 as an emergency pickup, and when you're a team with a multi-year commitment to Eric Chavez as the starter to observe, keeping someone around as an insurance policy is a necessity. Unfortunately, Hannahan was more like the agent who shows up at the scene of your car accident and promptly bashes out your headlights with a sledge hammer for getting him out of his cubicle. Nonetheless, the A's paid their premium to bring him back, 'cause when you've got Chavez, insurance isn't just a policy, it may as well be the law.
2008 When the A's ran out of infielders last year, they traded one of their Quadruple-A outfielders to Detroit for Quadruple-A infielder Hannahan, who was wasting his age-27 season by having a career year at Triple-A Toledo. The A's inserted him at third base, where he out-produced the tattered remains of Eric Chavez. This year, "Home Run" Hannahan will be the insurance policy, and with Chavez penciled back in as the starter, the A's are making sure their premiums are paid.
2007 Jack Hannahan`s principal asset is that he`s one of the better defensive third basemen in professional baseball, so the fact that the Tigers gave him nearly half his plate appearances as a second baseman last year gives tells you something about what they think of his future. His year at Toledo wasn`t bad, but for a 26-year-old repeater at Triple-A, the upside here is Scott Cooper.
2006 Hannahan`s bat is weak, but his defense profiles so well that he still rates a mention. Scouts and stats agree that if promoted, Hannahan would be an instant Gold Glove contender. He`s got a nice backstory, too, having beaten serious drug and alcohol problems as a teen. The sad fact, however, is that he can`t hit, and until he does, he`s not going to get The Call.
2005 Hannahan's defense is Rolenesque, according to both scouting reports and our translated numbers, and he'd have an excellent shot at winning the AL Gold Glove if promoted to the big leagues this year. Unfortunately, Hannahan's offensive gains have been modest at best, and he's spent more time in Western Pennsylvania than John Kerry did in October. He needs to get his on-base percentages high enough to have a shot at a sort of supercharged Rance Mulliniks career.

2012-09-24 14:30:00 (link to chat)How do you explain what has happened to my Indians in 2012, especially the 2nd half?
(Ida from Chagrin Falls, OH)
There's no explaining a .279 second-half winning percentage, but I think the main things are a total lack of pitching behind Justin Masterson (who hasn't been great either), and the total offensive black holes in the corners (Casey Kotchman, Jack Hannahan and Shelley Duncan/Johnny Damon). (Bill Parker)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jack Hannahan seems like an adequate replacement for Chavez at the plate, but won't the A's pitchers miss his defense? C'mon--six gold gloves!
(dwiest12 from Vienna VA)
Wow, there's a quadruple reversal of fortune... Hannahan's a decent enough defender, so it isn't like we just went from Brooks Robinson back to Carney Lansford impression of dry timber in high winds. The fact that anyone might see the offensive trade-off as even is what for me is so jarring; Chavez's offensive potential is what we've lost, but admittedly we started losing it years ago, and what we're missing still is that wishcasted maybe that Chavez's bat might yet represent. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-01-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you like to see replace Scutaro: Jack Hannahan, Donnie Murphy, or Kevin Melillo?
(Drew W from Vienna VA)
If Melillo could handle short, that would be lovely considering he does a bit of damage against righties, but as a practical matter, I think it's Donnie Hill^H^H^H^H^H Murphy. (Christina Kahrl)
