| 2011-07-21 13:00:00 | "Now, if only they could get something out of 1B..."
============
Given the plethora of injuries he's had the past couple of years, could you see the Indians moving Grady Sizemore to 1B (too short?) to save wear and tear?
(dianagramr from NYC) | I'm not sure that the wear & tear really gets saved. He's getting hurt sliding. What's so sad about Sizemore, is this was a guy, as Danny Knobler from CBS pointed out today, missed 5 games in 4 years. Feel like he's just sliding down the chain. (Mike Ferrin) |
| 2011-02-08 14:00:00 | Grady Sizemore: what does a full recovery look like for him? (Tony from Albuquerque) | A full recovery looks like "Grady Sizemore, best CF in baseball". I don't expect a full recovery, though. (Ken Funck) |
| 2011-01-18 13:00:00 | Marc, need to keep one Lowrie, B.J. Upton or Grady Sizemore. Leaning towards Upton but the strike outs are killer and Grady has a bad knee. (scottziegler from Wisconsin) | Sizemore can surely be had as a redraft given his troubles. I would go with Upton here if it's a straight fantasy league. If it's more of a realistic game like Scoresheet, maybe Lowrie. Upton could be a SB machine with some power and plenty of runs. He was worth almost $16 last year in mixed and $25 in AL-only. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2011-01-18 13:00:00 | One spot in a keeper league left between Michael Young, Grady Sizemore and Weiters. Who do you pick? (Tony from New Mexico) | What kind of keeper league? Salaries? Contracts? Just keep X number of players? Who else are you keeping? (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-08-26 13:00:00 | What type of player will Andrew McCutchen become - is he more Grady Sizemore, Carl Crawford, or something else? (adfeit from NYC) | Crawford with fewer steals would be my quick comp, though I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that. I like McCutchen a whole lot though. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-08-09 13:00:00 | Everyone seems to take it as a given that the Indians are due to turn it around soon, but are they really? I think the Santana injury made a lot of Cleveland fans get a familiar feeling. (That feeling: despair.) (Junior Ortiz from NYC) | It can be an impressive lineup if everyone stays healthy and on their development track. On the other hand, there's real worry about Grady Sizemore, and whether Choo will have to serve his time in the military, and now about whether Santana comes back. The organization has a huge pitching hole, so even if they push 900 runs, it might not be enough.
Not sure what's wrong over there. Enormous respect for the management team, but this is four years in five with no results. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2010-08-04 13:00:00 | If the Indians were able to procure some type of ace level starter for 2011. Would they be in the running for the division? I don't see anything wrong with the offense if healthy. (SaberTJ from Cleveland, OH) | I do. Other than Choo, Carlos Santana, and a comeback campaign for Grady Sizemore, there isn't a whole lot there. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2010-07-01 14:00:00 | I've read a Grady Sizemore comparison for Brett Jackson. Fair or foul? (John from Kansas) | Foul. Jackson's tools are good, but not in Sizemore's league. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2010-06-15 13:00:00 | Injuries asside..do you think we might have overrated Grady Sizemore a bit? He has been regressing and exposed (not the internet pics) over recent years. (Manny from Cleveland, OH) | Can you put the injuries aside? I don't think you can separate the pain from the production, or lack thereof. In any case, he hasn't been healthy since 2008, and he had a 30-30 season that year. His batting average was down a little from the ~.289 he hit from 2005-2006, but all things considered he was about as good in '08 as he had been in 2006 and 2007. I don't know if he'll be the same guy going forward, but I don't see the decline you're talking about prior to last season's elbow and abdominal problems. (Steven Goldman) |
| 2010-06-10 13:00:00 | Four years ago I had an initial draft for an AL only dynasty league and built my team around Grady Sizemore, Alex Gordon, BJ Upton, Felix Hernandez, Scott Kazmir and Joba Chamberlain.
Do you know of any support groups I can join? (achaik from maine) | Well at least Bossman Junior is doing well again! (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-06-02 13:00:00 | Tommy, thanks for chatting.
What's the funnier Tracy Morgan SNL sketch, Brian Fellows or Astronaut Jones? Because neither of those is as funny as my second and third round picks of Grady Sizemore and Kendry Morales earlier this season. (bctowns from Chicago, IL) | Really important question. I think the ceiling on Fellows was always higher, but Astronaut Jones was more consistent.
Also, my condolences. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2010-05-11 16:30:00 | During my fantasy draft I felt like a Billy Beane prodigy when I grabbed both Grady Sizemore and Nate McLouth with mid-round picks. Since then, of course, their terrible starts in the first five weeks has gotten me to channel my inner Jim Bowden.
What's the thought on these two moving forward? More Sample Size Theater with an inevitable rebound, or did everyone else just wisely stay away from these two in the first place? (OTSgamer from Dallas, TX) | Grady Sizemore is a great young baseball player. I can't figure out why, but he just doesn't seem to be showing the amazing eye he's shown for several years. He's also swinging and missing a lot more than he used to. I'm guessing he should bounce back, but he must be doing something wrong in his approach to be getting these results, maybe not seeing the ball well or something. Nate McLouth's line drive rate is pretty low this year, but not low enough to explain his atrocious BABIP. I have to imagine that bounces back, because nothing else seems crazily out of line. I wouldn't give up on either player at all. (Matt Swartz) |
| 2010-05-14 13:00:00 | Grady Sizemore is hitting .106/.192/.106 against lefties. According to the ESPN Crack Squad, he is hitting 2-for-22 against fastballs at 94 MPH or faster. Doesn't this suggest a loss of bat speed due to lingering injury effects that is forcing him to guess and lunge? At what point do you either ask him to take a couple weeks off or drop him in the order? (buffum from Austin TX) | His performance certainly worries me given that it may be linked to less than perfect health. I'd have moved him down in the order weeks ago; at this point I think they need to find out whether he's hurt and give him some time away, because he sure isn't helping the situation by playing through it. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2010-05-05 13:00:00 | Hi Marc - thanks for the chat. Grady Sizemore is finally at least showing signs of life, with two hits in three of his last five games. Is this the beginning of a turnaround? I asked Clay about Grady last week, and Clay expressed concern that Grady may never revert to his former self after what he went through last year. Do you agree or do you have a more optimistic outlook to offer me? :) Thanks! (mikeduin from Seattle) | I thought enough of Grady to splurge on him at auction this offseason, so I have faith he'll revert to form. These things take time sometimes (see: B.J. Upton). (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-04-29 13:00:00 | Who replaced Grady Sizemore with Grady from "Sanford and Son"? His walk rate collapsed and his K rate has skyrocketed. Have his eyes gone bad too? (dianagramr from NYC) | Maybe he saw the damn pictures the rest of us saw.
His strikeout rate isn't abnormally high -- he was about this level in '06 and '07. And his walk rate has been low, but not so low that you'd think there's gotta be something wrong. Remember, it's 20 games, there's a lot of season left, and the last 80 PAs are a very very small portion of what we actually know about Grady. (Shawn Hoffman) |
| 2010-04-27 13:00:00 | Everything I read about Grady Sizemore in the offseason predicted a return to his previous level of excellence this season -- is it time to get concerned or is his early season slump nothing to worry about? (mikeduin from Seattle) | And everyone else did, too. His K/BB rate is well off his history, there's little power showing, the BABIp actually dropped between 2007-08 and has never recovered. I am worried that he's not the player he was, and that the injuries have taken a toll that isn't going to heal. That would be a very sad thing, for baseball in general, not just Indian fans. (Clay Davenport) |
| 2010-04-21 14:00:00 | Please tell me Grady Sizemore is/will be OK. (dianagramr from NYC) | Well, the commercial I just saw said he slept on his glove, not a pillow, so if he has dropped that habit by now he could be okay. I know it's tough to look at a .209/.292/.372 and remind yourself it's only 48 PA into a season, but... it's only 48 PA into a season. I don't think he's going to be a .280/.380/.550, but I never thought of him as capable of that, honestly. I can see Sizemore finishing the year at around .270/.355/.485, which is certainly valuable albeit disappointing, but we both know there's nothing to worry about right now. (Eric Seidman) |
| 2010-03-17 14:00:00 | On my strat teams, I refused to trade Grady Sizemore, Cole Hamels and Ervin Santana this offseason. Who is more likely to bounce back to top form? (lou from Cape Cod) | I think there's a good argument to be made--and has been made by my colleagues here at BP--that Hamels was and will be just fine. With a nod to them, I think Sizemore's the one who truly bounces back. (Christina Kahrl) |
| 2010-02-17 16:00:00 | Hey Tommy,
How close do you think Adam Jones is to becoming the best fantasy CFer in the AL? If he can build on last season, I don't think he's all that far off from Curtis Granderson, or even Grady Sizemore maybe in a year or two. (Jimmy from NJ) | I think Adam Jones is going to be an absolute fantasy stud in no more than two years. The thing that keeps him from being an A+ centerfielder is that he is limited on the base paths to about 10-15 steals. The home runs should keep growing and could reach 30+. I wouldn't bet against this guy. A healthy Sizemore could reclaim the AL CF title, but Jones will at least make it interesting. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2010-02-17 16:00:00 | Is Grady Sizemore a good value pick this year given his problems last year? Is he someone you are targeting? (MarinerDan from SF) | It's tricky, because I think enough people will think that way that he'll probably be priced correctly. If he drops to, say, late second round--go nuts. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2010-02-02 13:00:00 | Are the various issues that afflicted Grady Sizemore in 2009 likely to linger? (dantroy from davis) | If you are in one of my fantasy leagues, yes. Sizemore is coming off two surgeries, so stay away!
If you are not, then no ... two minor surgeries that shouldn't have any effect on his season. A healthy Sizemore, ready on Day 1 of Spring Training with the energy that Manny Acta is going to bring to that team is something I want on my team. (Will Carroll) |
| 2010-01-21 13:00:00 | Is it me or is Grady Sizemore going to be a complete steal as a mid to late 2nd round pick? Pretty sure he is the only 40/40 threat in baseball. I would take him over Kemp every day and twice on my birthday. (Sean Burroughs from Walmart ) | I'm not sure how much his stock has actually fallen, especially with people being worried about Carlos Beltran's health. People might go for Kemp first due to his having a higher AVG, along with potentially more R and more RBI though, so he may fall. Hmm. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2010-01-26 14:00:00 | Think Grady Sizemore will return to his old form or did he peak and is now fading? (john from ct) | I think he'll be close to his old form again. (Tommy Bennett) |
| 2009-12-17 13:00:00 | "Jays got more back than the Twins did for Johan Santana (it would be hard to do worse, I think)."
As you note, that's setting the bar pretty low. Is that the worst trade of the last ten years? I can't think of any that are worse off the top of my head... (mattymatty2000 from philly, pa) | Only time will tell, but I think you can make strong cases for the Expos' acquisition of Bartolo Colon (Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips to Cleveland) and the Braves' acquisition of Mark Teixeira (Neftali Felix, Elvis Andrus, Jarrod Saltalamacchia - yeah, I can spell it without looking - et al). Still, it's in the picture for the clinkers of note. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2009-11-19 13:00:00 | So Joba, Montero, and a couple other prospects for Halladay, right? Having Doc and CC in a short series is too tempting to pass up. (Elton from Smithtown, NY) | I'm not seeing this at all. You saw what Johan Santana eventually went for two years ago. When you're trading for one year and a negotiating window, for a player with a no-trade clause, you're simply not going to go nuts for that player when you have to pay market price for the next six years. It doesn't make any sense for a team to give up 18 years of value for that kind of deal. That's why the Twins got stuck with what they did (Santana didn't help matters by setting a deadline), and why the massive prospect deals proposed aren't going to happen. Getting one year of a player isn't worth all that.
Besides, the Yankees would be fine if they'd just let their five best starters START and leave them the hell alone. they need outfielders first, and if they really want to go nuts on a deal, should be targeting a Grady Sizemore or a Ryan Braun or someone like that. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-10-28 14:00:00 | I have money to spend, but give me 3 reasons why I should buy season tickets for the Indians next season? (Cleveland Sports Fan from Cleveland) | 1) The return of Grady Sizemore
2) The likelihood that the team couldn't possibly get off to a worse start than in three of the last four years. 3) The fact that they're unlikely to trade a Cy Young winner for a third straight year. In all honesty, I think it's going to be a lean year, but I like what they did in hiring Manny Acta, and there are several young players, starting with Matt LaPorta, whose development is worth watching. (Jay Jaffe) |
| 2009-10-02 14:00:00 | Worst trade of the 00s has to be June 27, 2002: Omar Minaya of the Montreal Expos trades away Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, Grady Sizemore and Lee Stevens for Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew. As a Nats fan, I still have delusions of how what they'd be doing right now. (Charlie from Bethesda, MD) | I'll always defend that one. On that date, Minaya had little reason to believe those players would ever be Expos. He did exactly the right thing under those circumstances. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-10-02 14:00:00 | Does Andy Marte deserve a starting spot on the Indians next year? And what is the perception of Grady Sizemore? Still a top ten player to build around? (Andy from Saskatoon) | He deserves consideration, anyway. The Indians' LF/1B/3B situation might need clarity, which I would provide with a long overdue trade of Jhonny Peralta. That still leaves Matt LaPorta, who ends up at first once Michael Brantley is deemed ready. Not sure Marte can fade all this competition. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-08-05 13:00:00 | So what happened to Minaya? Back in his Expos days he was thought so well of. Then he goes to Flushing, gets a real budget to work with, and it all went to hell... (David from DC) | There were no expectations in Montreal. He was just running the team for MLB, and I think everyone felt bad for him.
I guess we can't fault him for his actions up there though, since they thought the team was going to be contracted. Nonexistent teams don't need Cliff Lee and Grady Sizemore. (Marc Normandin) |
| 2009-06-15 13:00:00 | Thanks for taking the time, Will. When you see a dropoff in performance like Grady Sizemore earlier this year, or Geo Soto, or maybe a David Ortiz, is it safe to assume "something" is wrong physically? (Stan from Des Plaines) | No, and absent evidence, it's just lazy. It's often right, but not always and even if it is, getting to it the lazy way might make you miss something. Process, not result. (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-05-14 13:00:00 | Grady Sizemore is 5-for-11 in stolen bases and is otherwise in an extended slump. He looks okay in the outfield, but could there be something in the strained hamstring vein that the Indians aren't mentioning in public? (buffum from Austin TX) | I have no evidence for this, but I guess it's possible. (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-05-04 14:00:00 | Given his contract and youth, what outfielders in MLB would you take over Markakis for the next six years? (Steve from DC) | Justin Upton, Grady Sizemore (probably). Um...after that it's tough. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2009-03-30 18:30:00 | So what can you tell me about this Grady Sizemore fellow I've been hearing so much about? (Rob from Alaska) | My wife has trouble seeing Grady as the heartthrob he is here in Cleveland because he bears a slight resemblance to occasional BP contributor and techie Ben Murphy.
(Where else are you going to find that kind of insightful analysis?) (Keith Woolner) |
| 2009-02-19 13:00:00 | Do I move Grady Sizemore for either of these packages? Webb/BJ Upton or Kemp/Lincecum. 12 team 5X5, 5 man keeper. (Ryan from NY) | I'd definitely do it for Webb/Upton. Kemp/Lincecum I'd sure think about. That said, I think Sizemore's going to explode this year. (Will Carroll) |
| 2009-01-29 13:00:00 | Who will be that improbable, unexpected team that makes a serious run at contention - ala Tampa Bay last season? (bianchiveloce from Anderson, SC) | None of the big losing clubs from last year made the kind of significant steps towards progress that the Rays did over the 2007-2008 offseason. The closest thing we have might be the Giants, but since they outperformed expectations last year riding on Lincecum and Sanchez, I'm not even sure they count.
I mean, unless Will Venable turns into Grady Sizemore, I think we can count the Padres out :-) (Marc Normandin) |
| 2008-09-23 13:30:00 | Thanks for the chat. What do you think of Aubrey Huff going forward? And is Nick Markakis already the best RF in the American League? (Brendan from Bainbridge) | I wouldn't want to make a long-term commitment to Huff, and while he has had a great season, the Orioles really should look to leverage that in the trade market. He'll never have more value than this, and he's not a part of their future.
Markakis is a total stud, the best RF in the league. He's underappreciated, kind of the AL East version of Grady Sizemore. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-09-23 13:30:00 | Hi Joe .... thanks for the chat ...
With all the injuries to frontrunners in the AL MVP race, is there a shot Grady Sizemore pulls an Andre Dawson and wins it with a sub-.500 team? (dianagramr from NYC) | Not a one. I don't thihk I've seen his name mentioned in any mainstream article. He's batting .270, he doesn't have huge RBIs and his team never contended. It wouldn't be like Andre Dawson winning; it'd be like Rosario Dawson winning. (Joe Sheehan) |
| 2008-07-22 13:00:00 | What is the ultimate ceiling of Engel Beltre? He is absolutely murdering right handers. Is he along the mold of a Grady Sizemore (less some power)? (BrowningNagle from Louisville, KY) | Wow -- long time no see Browning. Beltre's ultimate ceiling is off the charts. I haven't seen a player in the Midwest League who can match him on a pure tools level. That said, he has about 2% of Grady Sizemore's approach, and that has to change -- luckily he's get plenty of time. (Kevin Goldstein) |
| 2008-02-29 13:00:00 | Who has the stronger arm? Me or Juan Pierre? (Note: I "probably" lead my slow pitch softball league in outfield assists last year, although most of the base runners have had hip replacements recently.) (Clay from St. Louis, MO) | Well, if your league is anything like the one I played in last year, getting an assist is actually an accomplishment since we're too old to try to stretch anything or for that matter want to even consider sliding. So I'd have to say yes, your arm is probably competitive.
For 2007 Pierre ranked dead last among centerfielders at -7.3 with a rate of -6.0. Grady Sizemore is second to last at -4.6 with David DeJesus (-4.5) not far behind. In 2006 Pierre was -1.8 and in 2005 -1.6. From 2005-2007 he finished second to last at -10.7 ahead of only Johnny Damon (-11.2). He wasn't nearly as bad as far as rate was concerned because of his greater playing time (-3.0 per 550 opportunities). From a rate perspective Brady Clark did the worst among centerfielders who received much playing time (256 adjusted games in those three years) at -5.3 runs per 550 opportunities. Who was the worst in 2005-2007 you might ask (ok, you didn't but play along)? Shawn Green was -16.0 and Shannon Stewart was -11.8 before we get to Damon and Pierre. Jason Bay (-10.5) and Xavier Nady (-10.4) were no great shakes either. (Dan Fox) |
| 2006-02-07 15:00:00 | Joe, how many questions are you getting on when the Pecota cards are coming out?
Also, Robinson Cano: Next Tony Lazzeri, or next Sandy Alomar Sr.? (JRMayne from Riverbank) | Unless I'm mistaken, the new PECOTA cards went live today. They're betterer than ever before.
Look! Cano looks to me like a .280/.325/.420 guy over the long term, with big swings from year to year. How well that plays depends entirely on how he develops defensively. (Joe Sheehan) |

| 2009-06-09 14:30:00 | 2009 Draft Coverage | Seattle takes Ackley with pick number two. All of the rumors about them passing on him seemed like a smokescreen all along. He was announced as an outfielder, but as an aside, some teams have talked about seeing if his hands are good enough for a look at second base. Either way, his bat is going to be pretty special for the position. I think he could be a Grady Sizemore kind of player offensively with less power but a better batting average. (Kevin Goldstein) |
