2013-10-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Saw this mentioned elsewhere, but should teams take a velo-hitting specialst like Donnie Murphy more serious? Seems like he would help the Sox in this series.
(Bad Ziegler from Bad Land)
Do teams not take him seriously? I don't know. I know velocity shortens the time the batter has to react to the pitch, so he must make decisions more quickly, which increases the likelihood that he isn't able to react in time. But pure velocity gets hit all the time in MLB. Kyle Farnsworth is a prime example. He could throw 100 but was never more than a mid-bullpen guy because he didn't have the command an his fastball was too straight. Pure velocity is nice, but that's not necessarily why the Red Sox had trouble with Verlander and Scherzer. They had problems with those guys because they have great command, lots of plus pitches, AND because they throw the heck out of the ball. (Matthew Kory)
2012-09-24 14:30:00 (link to chat)Any explanation on why Rays always to get hits on pick-ups and trades that don't seem great/good at on-set and turn into gems in long-run? Fernando Rodney and Jeff Keppinger are doing quite well in unexpected roles for them. It seems Rays always find gold in what now should be called "The Yearly Rays Reliever Reclamation Project"(Al Reyes, Juan Cruz, Joaquin Benoit, Rafael Soriano, Kyle Farnsworth, Fernando Rodney)
(jlarsen from chicago)
I think some of it is just great big-league scouting and statistical analysis, but a lot of it is trial and error, too. The Rays are set up in such a way that they HAVE to sign a bunch of those guys, and while a lot of them will work because the Rays are good at what they do, a lot will fail because they're inherently gambles. They haven't had a lot of luck with veteran catchers the last couple years, and there was that whole Pat Burrell thing. (Bill Parker)
2012-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)The closer carousel has already begun. What current closers should be looking over their shoulders and who will they see?
(LoyalRoyal from Kansas)
I’ll give you three names:

Most likely: Brett Myers – I think he’ll be traded and that Fernando Rodriguez or Wilton Lopez take over.

Very likely: Grant Balfour – Again, traded. Ryan Cook is the next in line.

The wild card: Fernando Rodney. Kyle Farnsworth could be back in early-to-mid June. Maybe the Rays just slide Farnsworth into the eighth inning spot but I wouldn’t be too surprised if they gave Farnsworth the job back and let Rodney go into a set-up role. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-08-26 16:00:00 (link to chat)Does the Braves Front Office have any regrets trading away Yunel Escobar who has been terrific since joining the Jays?
(Zooey from LA)
None. We root for Escobar because we want every trade we make to be win-win for both organizations involved. Alex Gonzalez helped us reach the playoffs last year with his Gold Glove defense and had a huge hit in Game 2 of the NLDS to tie the score. Gonzalez has helped us have a great season again in 2011. Escobar is an extremely talented player and we hope he does well in Toronto and, to his credit, he's shown his 2010 numbers in Atlanta were an aberration.

The interesting thing about that deal, which often goes unmentioned, is the second and third players we got in the trade. Tim Collins, who was used a couple of weeks later to help facilitate a trade for Kyle Farnsworth and Rick Ankiel, has spent the entire 2011 season in the Major Leagues as a left-handed reliever for the Kansas City Royals. The third player, Tyler Pastornicky, projects for us as an everyday shortstop and has hit .315 with 7 HR and 27 SB as a 21-year old in Triple-A. There was a lot more to that trade than just Escobar and Gonzalez. (John Coppolella)
2011-07-21 16:00:00 (link to chat)Why are the Mets using Izzy over Parnell? Don't you need to close games in order to "be trained" how to do so? I've been holding onto Parnell all year waiting for this opportunity. WHY??? :)
(Jim from Kansas)
Because the Wilpons didn't think it was enough to piss off Mets fans so they decided to piss off fantasy owners as well. Izzy is the clear loser in the skills category, but they're going to let him do it for now. Closing is all about opportunity - you don't need to be trained for the role. The Rays have had 7 different relievers lead the team in saves over the past 7 seasons and that includes the likes of Tyler Walker, Dan Wheeler, and now Kyle Farnsworth. (Jason Collette)
2011-05-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Have you find a quality tonic for the stomach ailments that result from the phrase "Kyle Farnsworth loosening up for the Rays?" Because I am keeping Tums in business this season.
(achaik from maine)
Only once have I felt a little unnerved by Farnsworth closing and that came during an at-bat against David Ortiz in Fenway Park. (R.J. Anderson)
2011-01-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kyle Farnsworth in the AL East -- any chance this works out for Tamnpa?
(edwardarthur from Toledo)
My many Rays-oriented pals say yes. I'm undecided. I think I like him better in low-leverage innings, though that may be exactly where he ends up in Tampa Bay anyway. (Marc Normandin)
2011-01-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you Think WARP stands up to fWAR and sWAR? I feel a particular strength of WARP is that it doesn't seem to "punish" groundball pitchers for pitching in pitchers parks.
(mafrth77 from Boston)
Shocked no one has given me an opportunity to make fun of Kyle Farnsworth so far...

This is more a question for Colin Wyers, who better understands what's going on under the hood in each case. Colin has revised our definition of WARP somewhat, and you'll see that new definition at work in the annual and subsequently on the site. I expect plenty of healthy debate about that, a good thing. I was remarking to Cliff Corcoran last night that we really need to have a grand unified theory of WARP, because there are too many versions out there, and they differ widely enough to throw the whole concept into question. What I try to remember is that in each case WARP is an estimate, not a literal thing. I do hope, though, that with this new iteration we're coming out with, we will have gotten closer. (Steven Goldman)
2011-01-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)OK. I'll bite. Kyle Farnsworth, The Rays, ....go.
(Danny from Columbia, SC)
Do you think he knows any single women? I mean, ones that haven't hit home runs off of him. (Steven Goldman)
2010-09-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who wins in a fight: Machete, Sharktopus, or Kyle Farnsworth?
(Pearl from Brooklyn)
Ooh, tough call... Unless he retires from baseball to take a job as a bouncer at a sleazy strip club (I hear the Smut Hut may be hiring), Farnsworth's best days as an enforcer are probably behind him. Sharktopus is a hot prospect but he has yet to prove anything at the major league level.

Which leaves Machete, who based upon my recent observation is a serious five-tool player (small knife, big knife, machete, weedwacker, and hand cannon mounted onto motorcycle) and the wrong Mexican to **** with. Seriously fun movie. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-08-02 13:30:00 (link to chat)What sort of attraction does Kyle Farnsworth hold for GMs and scouts? Is he nice to their mothers ... tell funny stories to their kids? I realize that he may have great stuff, and be able to throw a baseball through a wall, but at what point is the fact that he is unable to get major league batters out on a consistent basis going to sink in?
(Jim from Iowa)
Going back to what I said at the deadline, you can't help but feel a little sorry for Farnsworth, but here again, the Braves didn't give up that much to bring him and Ankiel in (Collins and crud), especially since Moylan and Saito are less than reliable commodities themselves. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-02-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)"Stagecoach" was one of the greatest movie of all time. John Wayne was terrific in it, but so was everyone else, plus the direction, story and scenery. Hard to put many other films in its class, period. And by the way, since you like Cards pitching: what do you think of Kyle McClellan becoming a fifth stater?
(gerrybraun from Red River)
Ever see the bad remake, with Bing Crosby? Nothing against Bing, who made some fine films... I like Kyle McClellan as a fifth starter more than I like Kyle Farnsworth as one. That said, his so-so control and low-ish strikeout rate sing middle reliever to me and suggest a guy who could have trouble getting through the lineup too many times. If anyone can make it work, though, it's Dave Duncan. (Steven Goldman)
2010-01-19 15:30:00 (link to chat)Would the Yankees make a trade for DeJesus and if they would what would be a fair deal for both sides?
(Mike from NYC)
There have been times in the past when I thought that they should, and it still makes sense for the Royals to make a move if they can get a few prospects from someone. This is especially true this year, as DeJesus moves into his option/buyout year (although his $6 million for 2011 is not exactly killer-- it's just $750,000 more than they're giving Kyle Farnsworth). (Steven Goldman)
2009-04-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jay: I couldn't care less either way, but why do you assume that Hochevar in AAA is Hillman's decision?
(Joe from Washington, DC)
Oh, Dayton Moore's competence is every bit in question too. Kyle Farnsworth at $9 million? Willie Bloomquist for any amount of money? He's guilty too. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-12-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)It appears to me that Dayton Moore in essence swapped Leo Nunez, RamRam, and any semblance of financial flexibility for Coco Crisp, Mike Jacobs and Kyle Farnsworth? Doesn't this series of moves seem, um, counter-productive? Do you see a worthwhile plan here?
(BL from Bozeman)
You left out spending $1.8 million on Horacio Ramirez (IIRC). I like the Crisp move as a win-now kind of transaction, but I savaged the Jacobs move for cause--some might think he's a win-now pickup, but he's just a placeholder, and Farnsworth and Ramirez are even less. This isn't progress, it's cosmetics, and like anything hastily slapped together, it'll melt in the summer sun. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Here's the problem with the argument that you take flyers on kids and "guys" in the bullpen: the Mets did precisely that this year (besides Wagner), and it cost them a playoff berth. I understand not overpaying for the next Kyle Farnsworth, but all the Flushing Faithful will not miss Luis Ayala's corpse.
(Razz from New York, NY)
Who made that argument? I just said I wouldn't waste money on guys like Farnsworth or Fuentes, nor would I overpay for Rodriguez. Look at the Rays pen. The Phillies. Heck, outside of Papelbon, it's not exactly a distinguished crew in Boston. The closer doesn't matter if you can't get to him. (Will Carroll)

2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableBut the Royals' bats do so more quietly. The bullpen, on the other hand, has some fireworks. Paging Kyle Farnsworth...

Okay, okay, I won't dig on the Royals anymore. (Steph Bee)
2010-04-05 09:30:00Season Opener RoundtableAccording to WXRL, the 1999 Royals had the worst bullpen in modern history. The 2010 Royals have gotten an excellent jump on their record today, and they haven't even used Kyle Farnsworth yet. (Steven Goldman)
2008-09-29 10:30:00Tigers/White Sox Play-In GameIf anyone can make it close again, it's Dotel. 12 homers in 66.1 innings - Shef's only better shot at getting 500 today would be if Kyle Farnsworth were to somehow don a Sox uniform. (Jay Jaffe)

PITCHf/x Pitcher Profile

A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC

In 2014, he has relied primarily on his Sinker (92mph), Fourseam Fastball (95mph) and Slider (86mph). He also rarely throws a Cutter (90mph) and Change (90mph).
