DateQuestionAnswer
2014-05-29 19:30:00 (link to chat)Would you trade Alex Reyes, Stephen Piscotty, and Reese McGuire for me in a dynasty?
(Justin Verlander from Rock City)
Yes, I would. Reyes is years away, Piscotty is nice but replaceable and McGuire is a better MLB prospect than a fantasy one. If I'm giving up Verlander, I actually want more than this. (Ben Carsley)
2014-05-27 11:30:00 (link to chat)Who is the prospects that the Jays passed on when they took Phil Bickford who I should be comparing the upcoming pick to? JP Crawford? Reese McGuire?
(BlueJaysPlus from Canada)
I didn't really love the Bickford pick from the start, but I think it's fair to compare the current draft pick to those guys, sure. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)A few prospects that blow up the rankings next year.
(Wade from Road House bar)
Alex Reyes, David Dahl, Francisco Mejia ,Jose Martinez, Luiz Gohara, Edwin Diaz, Jorge Alfaro, Reese McGuire, Jose Ortiz (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2014-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Nobody talks about their feelings on Reese Mcguire on any site. What kind of player are we looking at?
(mike from st. louis)
A dual-threat catcher with plus arm/receiving skills and the chance to offer something at the plate. We are ranking him #4 in a loaded Pirates system. I really like him. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who lied to you about Reese McGuire?
(Not Mauricio Rubio Jr. from Chicago)
No one lied to be about McGuire. He's awesome, and while he's a better MLB prospect than a fantasy one, I still think he merits inclusion as a top-150 fantasy guy. He has a shot at being a top-10 fantasy backstop with legitimate power and a non-embarrassing hit tool, and he's a lock to stay at catcher. As one of the founding members of Reese's Pieces, my love for him knows no bounds. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)General question on two young catchers: Reese McGuire (PIT) and Tom Murphy (COL). Please tell me what you know about them. Thanks!
(Scott from CA)
Both are solid fantasy names. I discussed McGuire earlier, but I think he'll be universally considered a Top 100 guy next year. Murphy doesn't have a crazy ceiling, but catchers with power in Colorado grab my attention, and he could be ready soon. He might kill Rosario's value, though. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Best all around fantasy catching prospect (weighing ceiling vs. risk)? Go.
(fishersehorn31 from VA - The 540)
I think it's Swihart, right now. Alfaro is close and I'd go with Reese McGuire next. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Top 5 dynasty prospects from this past draft?
(John from My basement)
Off the top of my head: Bryant, Frazier, Gray, Stewart, Appel. The fifth one was tough for me. I also really like JP Crawford, Braden Shipley, Hunter Harvey and Reese McGuire. The first four I'm a little more confident on. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Reese McGuire will ever hit enough to be more than a 2nd catcher in a 2 catcher league? Is there top 10 offensive potential for catchers in the bat?
(jollyRoger from Pitt)
I don't like McGuire's chances of becoming a top-10 fantasy catcher, but his path to maximizing his value is the Russell Martin early-career path: steal bases. (Bret Sayre)
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Have any of the 2013 draftees outside the top 10 picks made huge jumps up the prospect lists for you since the draft?
(TR from Baseball Withdrawal)
Both Reese McGuire and JP Crawford -- though not far outside the top ten picks -- have really impressed the scouts I spoke to this summer. Another name that's had some helium, and you'll get to read more about him tomorrow in the White Sox Top 10, is right-hander Tyler Danish. (Mark Anderson)
2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)What would Pittsburgh do with their young catching prospects in 2014? It seems like Reese Mcguire, Wyatt Matthisen, and Jin-De Jhang would all slot into the low A affiliate, but that would likely cause playing time and development issues.
(Bob from Seattle)
Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how they handle that. I will say that, if there's a position that it's actually good to have multiple prospects at in the minor leagues, it's catcher. That's because it's such a physically demanding position and young guys typically aren't catching 120-plus games per season anyway. Definitely likely that all three head to West Virginia next season, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle that. It's easy to juggle two catching prospects at the lower levels but gets a little more difficult with three. (Jason Cole)
2013-07-12 19:30:00 (link to chat)How would you rank the top players from the last two draft classes? How does 2014 compare?
(CC from ABQ)
Looking quickly at the top of my board on draft day this June and last, I quickly come out this way:
1 Gausman (2012)
2 Almora (2012)
3 Correa (2012)
4 Buxton (2012)
5 Gray (2013)
6 Appel (2013)
7 Giolito (2012)
8 Frazier (2013)
9 Stewart (2013)
10 Zimmer (2012)
11 Shipley (2013)
12 Ball (2013)
13 Bryant (2013)
14 D Smith (2013)
15 Reese McGuire (2013) (Nick Faleris on Draft Signing Day)
2013-06-07 10:30:00 (link to chat)A lot of people are questioning Reese McGuire's bat... what is his offensive upside?
(Joe G from Pittsburgh)
I but a 50 on the hit tool and a 50 on the power. Last summer he had more swing and miss to his game, largely because he was gearing up to drive the ball. This spring he sacrificed some leverage in favor of bat control and really took a step forward in squaring the ball more consistently. It's always a challenge for a young player to try and develop in two areas that require so much attention (catching--the whole package--and hitting), but McGuire has a fair shot to do just that. I think if all goes well you could have a really nice defensive catcher that could bat .275-.285 and hit you 15 home runs. That's a really nice player. (Nick Faleris on the MLB Draft)
2013-06-07 10:30:00 (link to chat)Knowing know that Denney is still on the board, would it have been a better approach for the Pirates to take Braden Shipley at 14, then Denney in the second round since he is similar to Reese Mcguire anyway? Or is Mcguire that much better? A haul of Meadows, Shipley, and Denney would have been pretty impressive.
(Joe G from Pittsburgh)
McGuire is a sure-fire catcher and Denney's spring was rocky. I think Pittsburgh handled Day 1 well. I think Denney should have come off the board, but I won't quibble with Pittsburgh approach -- definitely sound. (Nick Faleris on the MLB Draft)
2013-05-30 13:30:00 (link to chat)Better future hitter: Dom Smith, Austin Meadows or Reese McGuire?
(Fin from NY)
It's a tossup between Smith and Meadows for me. Both have the potential to be plus hitters. (Mark Anderson)
