Internet Baseball Awards: NL Most Valuable Player

Barry Bonds continued his domination of Internet NL MVP voting by winning the
IBA NL MVP for the third straight year and the sixth time overall. Bonds has
finished at least third in Internet NL MVP voting after every season except
1999, when he was limited to less than 450 plate appearances by an injury. Vlad
Guerrero, who had finished in the top 20 each of the last four years, finished
second despite playing for the seemingly doomed Expos. Randy Johnson, who
finished in third place, was the highest ranking pitcher in Internet NL MVP
voting since Greg Maddux won the award in 1995. Albert Pujols, who finished
fourth after his 2001 rookie campaign, moved up a notch to third in 2002 and was
the only everyday player from a division winner to finish in the top ten.
Jeff Kent finished fifth and was the only infielder to finish in the top
eighteen. Brian Giles' seventh-place finish makes him the only player in
the top ten to have not appeared there in any previous year as well as the
highest ranked player from a losing team in this year's voting. Sammy
Sosa's eighth-place finish marks the fifth year in a row he's finish in the
top ten. John Smoltz's twelfth-place finish was the highest of any relief
pitcher. Mike Piazza finished out of the top fifteen for the first time
since before he was a rookie. Fifteen of the top twenty finishers were on
winning teams; nine of those fifteen made it to the playoffs.
