Internet Baseball Awards: Cy Young
by Greg Spira
Winning a close race with Barry Zito and Derek Lowe, Pedro
Martinez followed in the footsteps of Randy Johnson, Greg
Maddux and Roger Clemens by winning his fourth Internet Cy Young
Award. Zito was actually named on more ballots than Martinez and finished a
extremely strong second. He is the last member of Oakland's big three to finish
among the top three in Internet AL Cy Young voting; Mark Mulder finished
third in 2001 and Tim Hudson finished third in 2000. Lowe, who allowed
less runs per 9 innings than anyone in baseball in 2002, finished a strong
third. Of last year's top three finishers, only Mark Mulder received any
significant support this time around, finishing seventh. The highest ranking
reliever this year was Billy Koch, who finished tenth.

Randy Johnson easily outpolled teammate Curt Schilling for the
2002 IBA NL Cy Young to become the first pitcher to win five Internet Cy Youngs
and the first player to win any Internet Baseball Award four years in a row.
Schilling finshed second behind Johnson for the second year in a row, though
with much weaker support than last year. Roy Oswalt followed up his
seventh-place fiinish in 2001 with a third-place finish this year. Greg
Maddux's fourth-place finish marks the tenth year in a row he has finished
in the top six of the voting for the Internet NL Cy Young award. Maddux's
longtime teammate John Smoltz, in his first year as a closer for the
Braves, was the highest ranking reliever in fifth place.
