Good writeup as usual. One quibble: "Torres is unlikely to stick at shortstop even in organizations without <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70633">Addison Russell</a></span> or <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=58809">Didi Gregorius</a></span>." Maybe I'm misunderstanding ... but Russell is not Yankees property (yet?) :-)

Good read! One quibble: "Sanchez had the highest <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=ISO" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('ISO'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">ISO</span></a> in baseball (min. 200 <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=PA" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('PA'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">PA</span></a>) and also finished with the third-highest pull percentage at 54.1 percent. That may suggest the short porch at Yankee Stadium inflated his power production, but that’s not entirely the case." The high pull percentage would not jive with the short porch, as the porch is in right field. He DID hit some oppo homers, but most of his homers were to LF/CF.

"... For the most part, when Brown makes contact with the first pitch, he does damage; a 10-for-29 line with two doubles and four homers will attest to that. But the outfielder is just 18-for-86 (.209/.216/.384) with one walk and 25 strikeouts when opposing pitchers jump ahead 0-1, 7-for-60 (.117/.129/.183) when they earn a 1-2 edge, and 11-for-68 (.162/.162/.235) with 24 strikeouts in plate appearances that end on a pitch delivered with the hurler ahead in the count." For context, here are the 2013 y-t-d MLB slash averages: First pitch: .332/.337/.542 After 0-1: .224/.264/.343 with 29% K rate After 1-2: .182/.231/.279 with 43% K rate Pitcher ahead: .205/.213/.300 with 34.6% K rate

Maybe I missed this in the article, but how does the spin of a particular pitch (the baseball only) impact the distance of a batted ball, keeping all other variables constant. Larry ... I assume that if Cabrera had less than 502 PAs, they'd adjust his batting average by adding outs, like they do for the overall batting average leader. Correct? I'm trying to imagine the brouhaha if some player led in HR and RBI, but lost out on the Triple Crown due to fewer than the required PAs and the addition of outs to make up for it.

Boras was the keynote speaker at last year's SABR convention. Like many of the members of the audience, I went in with a negative image of him ... after all ... he was "ruining baseball". But then we all listened to him ... he's self-assured, confident, polished, humorous, convincing, even charismatic. I came out of that speech maybe not *liking* him ... but certainly *respecting* the talent he possesses. And as KG has mentioned on the podcast, if your son was a baseball player, you'd want Boras representing him. Here's Boras' speech: http://sabr.org/latest/sabr-41-boras-keynote-speech-focuses-data-psychology

Nice work (as always) Jay. Since 2001, with the exception of the 2010 season (where they started 1-11 then 2-16, 7-21 and 15-41 then managed to *improve* to finish at 66-96), the O’s have played at least .450 ball for the first 47 games. If you limit it to 2005-9 and 2011, they’ve played better than .450 ball for at least the first 74 games. Then they've played roughly .360 for the remainder of the season. (I researched that for a post on my blog) So, I'll hold my breath a bit on the nice start.

Nice work Jason. Here's a tangential question for you. If you were the Royals, given the restrictiveness of the amateur draft rules in the new CBA (seemingly stacked against "smaller market teams"), would you try and "go for it" this year? If so, would you be averse to trading some of the almost ready prospects for an established pitcher (either prior to the start of the season, or if you're still within shouting distance at the ASB)? Which prospects do you think the Royals might consider expendable in such a scenario? Thanks!

Back in the mid 80s, I did my Master's Thesis on the use of computers in baseball. I came across an article that stated that the A's didn't fear trading Tony Armas to the Red Sox because their proprietary computer system analyzed Armas' flyballs, and when superimposed upon Fenway Park's dimensions, found that he wouldn't be as good a powerhitter there. It turns out they were wrong, as Armas hit .280/.323/.524 in his career at Fenway.

I'm complaining about the strike zone because I believe (perhaps incorrectly) that having the ump situate himself between the batter and the catcher impairs his view of outside corner pitches. If the ump stood directly behind the catcher (as they used to do, IIRC), they'd have a "truer" view, am I right?

Great article! One minor editorial nitpick. The tease on the photo linked to the article reads "Derek Jeter may own multiple Gold Gloves, but that doesn't mean that Yankees fans make their own error face when Michael Kay says, "Past a diving Jeter!"" ================================ That "past a diving Jeter" only speaks to the Captain's lack of range, not to what he does with the ball once he fields it. He actually makes very few errors on the balls he gets to, and rarely does he garner an E on a "past the diving" play.

from mlbtr yesterday: Two front office men, neither from the Astros or Phillies, told ESPN's Jayson Stark they believed the Phillies had a deal for Pence in the last 24 hours only to have the Astros back off. The Phillies offered Jarred Cosart, Jonathan Singelton, and a second-tier pitching prospect for Pence, believes Stark. I'm working on a similarly-veined post for my blog. I'm looking at the pitchers with the worst W-L % (or total losses) for great teams (the flip side of Steve Carlton's 27-10 record for the 59-97 Phils). So far, the best (so to speak) I've come up with is those same 1938 NL pennant-winning Chicago Cubs, who went 89-63 overall (.585). Their worst pitcher, in terms of W-L %, was not Carleton, but Larry French, a swingman who went 10-19 (.345), making 43 appearances (27 starts). 15 of those losses came in starts, the other 4 in relief. Good stuff, Steve (as always).

I was fortunate enough to catch Trout this past Saturday night in Anaheim. I had never seen him "live", and neither had my friends, but I knew he had "80" speed, and I warned them that "he's a blur on the bases". Nonetheless, we all gasped when we saw him fly down the line from the RH batter's box. I really hope he can keep anything close to that swiftness as he matures. Later that night, I walked into the Angels team store and asked the manager if he had "Trout" shirts yet ... he looked at me a little funny, and then sheepishly said ... "we should have them in next week".

I concur about the one-year deal aspect of this. The Yanks really only HAD to have Jeter at SS for his 3,000th hit, which (fisted to right field willing will happen this year). It really is the last 2 years of this new deal that are so untenable. If I were the Yanks, I would have offered him $35 million for 2011 (as a "to hell with the 2011 luxury tax, we're giving you this golden parachute"), and then a *club* option for 2012 at around $9 million. Take it or leave it. (And I doubt Jeter would have passed it up).

Unfortunately, that quality SS didn't/doesn't exist on the Yanks roster (apologies to Nunez and Pena), and Cito Culver isn't due til at least 2013. Also, the 2010-11 free agent market at SS consisted of: Juan Castro, Craig Counsell, Bobby Crosby, Adam Everett, Cristian Guzman, Cesar Izturis, Julio Lugo, Augie Ojeda, Jhonny Peralta, Nick Punto, Edgar Renteria and Miguel Tejada. IOW, nobody who could match Jeter's (reduced) offense, and only capable of providing marginal improvements defensively. As for trading for a SS, which team had a SS to deal, and was going to deal a SS to the almighty Yankees, when they KNEW the Yanks HAD to re-sign Captain Jeter? There was no real way around this ... Jeter needed the Yanks, and the Yanks needed Jeter.

As BBTN proved, the revenue increase from 75-80 wins is nowhere near what it is from 85-90 (to pick #s out of the air). UNLESS this is one of those 1973 NL East-type seasons where one team goes 83-79, and the bottom-dweller is only 11 games worse. The Royals see the Indians off to a hot start, see that the Tribe's pitching can't possibly do what they are doing for another 4 months, see that the Twins are snakebit, the Tigers enigmatic and the WhiteSox offense is asleep, and maybe, just maybe, the difference between Kila and Hosmer is the 1-2 wins it might take to steal the division? If they make the playoffs, then 2012 Season Tickets sales will be even better than they would have been with the expected promotions of Duffy, Myers, et. al.

One more thought ... and I don't know if you have the data to do this . . . while Lowe may be .... um ... "low" in the zone, it stands to reason that any pitch with no "break" (moving along only one plane) is going to be easier to square up. So, if Lowe's pitches are moving in a relatively straight downward line towards that point, he's gonna be hit more than someone with tons of spin/movement. Is it possible to break this out by pitch type?

Kevin .... given your recent podcast discussion with the Professor on "ideal height/weight/body type", I look at Miller's 6'3", 195 at age 20 and wonder "how much more physical growth will he have ... 15 pounds, 25 pounds ... and what will that do to his strength, delivery, velocity". I know you project prospect's build/frame and include that in the determination of rankings/ceiling, so what is your feeling about Miller's "adult" frame?

Kevin ... a general question about your ratings. Do you hold defense to be a larger portion of a prospect's rating if they are playing a more important defensive position? (i.e. Arencibia might be #1 prospect if his defense was stronger or projected to be stronger, but a corner OF's ranking isn't as defense-dependent)

Well, the Soriano decision wasn't Cashman's, but you are right. Also, if you can't find a decent #3/4/5 starter, you best try and build the strongest, deepest bullpen you can. The issue with the Yanks is ... did they already have the bullpen answers in house? Does Moneyball's "reliever fungibility" still exist?

Christina .... I've read a couple of reports that the Snakes are considering the use of a humidor for their baseballs. If this is true, the "bandbox" may not be such an apt term anymore. Can you query your sources as to the validity of this? Thanks!

Nice write-up on the entity that is Kevin Gregg. Talk about fungibility! Now, with regard to the Pads . . . "Signed 1B-L Brad Hawpe to a one-year, $2 million contract, with a $6 million club option for 2012 ($1 million buyout)." I'm trying to remember the last time a player signed a one year deal with a club option that paid 3x the one-year base salary. Is this a "show us you are real, and then we'll 'PAY' you" type of deal? Separately, if the Pads still want him in '12, but not at $6M, and they sign him for something less, is Hawpe still entitled to the buyout money?

On the other hand, if a reliably good lefty bat is a must, then Adam LaRoche is best pick for the risk-averse. On the other hand, somebody's going to choose to live dangerously and give Nick Johnson a shot (while obviously having an alternative at the ready)." =================== Just how many hands do you think most GMs have, Christina? :-) (Most OWNERS have more than 2, given their ability to secure public funding for stadia while getting revenue sharing dollars)

You missed one .... if the Pirates manage to get swept in Florida starting tonight, they will finish the season with the worst road record (16-65) since the adoption of the 162-game schedule ('63 Mets went 17-64 on the road). Offsetting this is that they nearly joined the 2006 Devil Rays as the only teams in the last 60 years to play .500 ball at home and under .250 on the road. The Pirates went 40-41 at home this season.

Thanks for the considerate responses Christina. As for point 3 ... I *do* want to believe managers can have an impact on the overperformance relative to runs scored/allowed. In fact, I've wanted to do an analysis of this possibility, and sought to use the "Manager - General" report found here ... http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=70983 1) There is no data prior to 2005. 2) There is no data for the current season. 3) There is no Glossary entry for the column headings "G_W_SUBS" and "SUBS". 4) There is no easy way to have a "multiple season dump" of all data (this is a problem with most of the reports on the site). If you can pass this along to the responsible party, I'd be most appreciative.

CK ... nice article ... a couple of points: 1) Did the Padres brass really take their finish to 2010 as the "real deal"? I mean, a lot of talk over the Winter was "when will Gonzalez get dealt?". If the admin. was convinced that the 2010 finish wasn't a fluke, then was A-Gon really shopped seriously at any point ... or was it smoke and mirrors and putting out feelers seeing if they would be blown away with an offer? 2) More of a semantic nitpick here ... In the Angels comment, I don't think "abbreviate" is the proper word to use in "maybe losing Kendry Morales for the year or the total implosion of Scott Kazmir helped abbreviate this switch". Perhaps "hastened"? 3) It's been statistically proven that there is no correlation in year-to-year Pythagorean overperformance relative to real-life W/L record. So, this means that we can't attribute the Angels continued propensity for this to the managing by Scioscia. Given this ... how DO you explain it?

I happened to be in New Hampshire over the past weekend, and caught Oliver's start against the Fisher Cats. The Cats helped Oliver out by running themselves into a couple of outs on the bases, but there were very few hard-hit balls against Oliver.

Also, it’s probably not a coincidence his recent slide has corresponded with a move to the second spot in the Yankee batting order. Normally, it’s a luxury for a hitter to be sandwiched between Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira, but Swisher’s low contact approach should disqualify him from hitting higher than sixth in the lineup. =================== Given the way Teix is (not) hitting, perhaps opposing pitchers are choosing not to give Swisher anything to hit?

Going into Saturday's game, their gaudy, majors-leading .476 slugging percentage was tempered by a 23rd-best .248 team batting average. Their resulting ISO of .228 would be the highest season total for a team in at least 20 years.

'Even though Burrell proved to be a $16-million mistake for his organization, Rays manager Joe Maddon believes the right-handed hitter could turn his career around. "It didn't happen for him with us but it wasn't for a lack of effort," Maddon said. "He worked hard. He was always one of the first guys in the clubhouse every day, watching video of the pitchers and preparing for the game. He would even work on his defense almost every day even though he didn't play an inning in the outfield for us."' ======================= If he hit that poorly given that level of effort, wouldn't that mean that his skills are basically null and void now? In a statistical quirk, his BABIP in each of the past three years is .271, which would seem to point not to being "hit-unlucky", but "hitter in decline". That the Giants picked him up shows their level of desperation for offense (and perhaps also shows their continuing misvaluation of a player's potential offensive output).

Thanks Will. Re: Sizemore In the absence of some sudden severe deterioration of skills, one could look at his 2010 performance to date and wonder if he isn't having some unstated recurrence of 2009 injury issues (elbow?). He hit well in Spring Training (small sample size alert), but once the season started . . . zilch. And he's not even attempting that many SBs (which COULD be a function of batting in the 2-slot now, but given the lack of oomph in the Indians lineup, I'd think they'd try to manufacture some runs). Can we peg his power outage to his knee/elbow recurrence? Can we peg his lack of running to his knee?

Aaron Harang is still cursing Dusty for that 63-pitch relief appearance on two days rest three years ago. And isn't it odd/coincidence that this is discussed on the day Eric Gagne retires. ------------- "Will he get five days rest? The last time Rodriguez did something like this, according to Kevin Goldstein, would have been nearly a decade ago, when he was at Single-A. How the Mets manage his recovery will be a very interesting one to watch." The Mets will arrange to not have a lead in the ninth inning for the rest of the week.

As for Fausto's 12/2 k/bb rate in Spring, I think we need to temper that with the thought that unless he was horribly, dangerously wild, many of the batters he faced were either minor leaguers looking to impress with the bat, or major leaguers trying to get some swings against live pitching. That being said, I did take a flyer on him in a late round of my draft this past weekend. :-)

I guess it depends on which combination of positions you want to consider for "super-utility" designation. At least one CI and one MI, plus OF and/or C? Then it comes down to the minimum # of games played at each position to merit noting it as "playing" it. I'll try some other combos and see if a more-representative (and potentially-potent) group emerges.

Well, it COULD be construed that way. However, I've made enough constructive comments/criticism over the years here, and have had enough e-mail/in-person conversations with BP staff, to give me some perspective on this current turn of events. Look back over my recent comments: 1) I lobbied for, and got, a customer-based "beta-testing" group for PECOTA. 2) I've lobbied for, and have been promised, a unique ID system for much if not all fantasy content, which will enable easier merging of disparate data such as THRs, PECOTA, PFM, and the Weighted Means Spreadsheet. 3) I've lobbied for a downloadable form of the Annual. (Though various members of BP staff agree with me on this matter, its out of BP's hands. Its a publisher's decision, and they haven't been able to convince a publisher to go that route yet.) I simply believe in the mission and performance of BP more than any other independent baseball research site. I'm not on BP's payroll. I'm not kissing their asses. They appreciate my input. What do you bring to the improvement of this site?

Let's step back for a moment: Do many of us love and support BP, and rely upon its PFM and PECOTA for our drafting? Yes Do we sometimes look at a projection and think, "that doesn't look right" (either good or bad), and discount it from our draft sheet? Yes Do we also seek out other fantasy draft projections at the same time? Yes Is $40 for a year of all services a good deal, or $20 for fantasy features only a good deal? Yes Has BP botched the normally smooth rollout of the PECOTA? Yes Is this the first major glitch most of us have experienced in our dealings with BP? Yes Do customers have a right to be disappointed/angry about this? Yes BUT .... let's realize that there has been a lot of personnel turnover at BP during the last year, and they're trying to automate an Excel process featuring tons of data and inter-related algorithms. Just my opinion here, but if you are playing fantasy sports for "thousands" of potential dollars, perhaps you've lost sight of the "fun" that is supposed to be involved. Fantasy sports are supposed to ADD to one's enjoyment of the game. Spewing vitriol at a supplier of information used in fantasy gaming may be cathartic for the venter, but after a certain point, it only turns into static. Like some of my favorite players, I'm willing to give BP an "off-year", and I'm willing to pony up another $40 to give them another chance. Comeback player of the year, 2011 perhaps?

Thank you Clay for being forthright. Its a monumental task. Perhaps it would have been best to run the old and new ways in parallel for a year prior to the switch-over. Regardless, I can only imagine the gigabytes of data that needed to be wrangled.

As with other BP analysts treatment of PECOTA from time to time, Marc's rankings are not necessarily 100% in lockstep with the PECOTA projections. "Hoffman worries me in the sense that if I were to pick one pitcher most likely to underperform his weighted mean, it would be him. The combination of age and park bothers me enough that I wouldn't want to spend too much on him at auction or waste a pick on him too soon." So, Marc took a look at what PECOTA projected, didn't think it was spot-on (in this case, for the reasons he laid out), and marked Hoffman down a couple of notches. What is NOT shown in that table is Blown Saves (or Save Opportunities). Perhaps those 34 saves occurred over 45 chances? Anyone closer with a 1.35 WHIP is going to walk a tightrope every time out. Also, *perhaps* PECOTA sees no other likely candidate for saves in the Brewer pen, and gave Hoffman all the opportunities?

Marc ... I'd be interested in understanding how PECOTA comes up with the projected saves totals. Save opportunities are going to be more prevalent with teams involved in close games (i.e. their runs scored and runs allowed aren't that different, not involved in many blowouts either way, etc.). Does the team's projected runs scored and allowed factor into the projected saves?

His plate discipline, which was growing steadily in the minors, has disappeared in the majors. Is he really a Quadruple-A player? As a 22-year-old in AAA in '06 http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/team.cgi?id=35720 , he actually hit for a lower BA than the team (.276 vs. .289), though his OBP was right on par with the team average and his slugging trailed only Scott Hairston on the team. What does a .276/.364/.531 line in Tucson in 2006 translate to? Surely they thought he had "nothing left to prove" in the minors, but statistically, is that a slash line worthy of getting called up?
