Any word on <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=103203">Amed Rosario</a></span>? He hasn't played in 3 of the last 4 games for Binghamton.
I think you meant to say "vastly inferior" competition for <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=107122">Garrett Whitley</a></span>, being an Albany, NY area kid.
I agree with Matthew, but I don't see Hal signing off on anything other than Schwarber for Miller, which would never happen.
To me, that's what made the article so fantastic. The contrasts within the story. Just excellent writing.
That was a fantastic read. Excellent job. And thank you for sharing Skylyn's story among the adult silliness.
Too notch stuff. Grades as true 80 baseball journalism.
Never seems to work out that way, does it?
Rebuilding in a dynasty is one of the most rewarding aspects of playing fantasy baseball. Sure, your team this year is bad, but you have already gotten younger with just enough lottery tickets to net some return.
Me too. I like them to win it all myself.
And going with Houston to win it all this year. Sorry, Astros fans.
Probably the hardest sport to predict. I've done my own predictions for around 25 years and picked the WS correct once.
What determines which teams get a local site? It seems fairly random after NYY, BOS and CHC.
Been around since 03 and just re-upped. I really like some of the new features you guys have for dynasty league players. #BringIt
Interesting topic for sure. Good read.
The most overhyped team in 20 years. You would think they are about to win 125 games and then go unbeaten in the playoffs.
I know they have a nice team, but shouldn't fans pump the brakes just a little?
Just an observation, but this seems like the weakest Top 101 class in years. Obviously because of the graduation of so many studs last year.
Unfortunately, I think BP is entering a slow death-spiral. Too much talent is gone and this new management prioritizes click bait over anything else.
Which is all well and good...and mostly meaningless.
The Cubs strike out a ton and the Mets have one of the most potent strikeout-inducing rotations in baseball. It's not an ideal match-up for Chicago.
Apologies...Jeff explained the reasoning. I would delete this if I could.
OK....fair enough. Ignore my snippy comment on the other thread. :-) Considering the criteria, it does make sense.
That's crazy. I can see not thinking he's a future star, but leaving Conforto off the top 50 is just wrong.
How does <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=101614">Michael Conforto</a></span> not make this list? Seems like ceiling trumped floor for the most part here with the abundance of younger prospects. Still, hard to see a case for an 18-year old in Low A over a kid doing very well in Double A.
Yeah, I mentioned that if you read the other comments.
Yeah - I don't see it either. I remember <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=1092">Alex Escobar</a></span> being incredibly overhyped. Same with <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=898">Alex Ochoa</a></span> and <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=45451">Lastings Milledge</a></span> as well. But not lately. And especially not <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=101614">Michael Conforto</a></span>.
When in the last few years have Mets prospects been overhyped? I agree with carlbrownson. Something about their team creates a slight negative bias.
I think a lot of this perception about Mets prospects comes from the Generation K aftermath.
As a Mets fan, I'm pretty sure most of us realize Conforto is not a savior. They need about five Confortos to get over the top.
"His name gets him 60 percent of the way to True Ace status all by itself."
Yes it does.
Is it a stretch to say that so far, BP would say Milwaukee and Cleveland have had the best drafts?
<span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70608">Gavin Cecchini</a></span> might not get called up, but I wonder if <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=101614">Michael Conforto</a></span> will later on this year.
What about the expanded strike zone - that Hardball Times wrote about last week - as a major factor?
Jeff, who is your favorite team?
Interesting dichotomy between BP's take on <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=103203">Amed Rosario</a></span> and Baseball America's. BA is much higher on his bat. It will be fascinating to see who ends up more accurate.
Yes he is.
Should be noted that since that BP piece, Smith has been named FSL Player of the Week.
I am with you. I have been here since 03 and I'm out after this year if the main site hasn't been redesigned. From the mass exodus of writers to this latest development, it's becoming less and less worth it.
Rest assured, not every team is getting a dedicated site. Too small a company to do it and even if they did, they would dilute the talent pool of the contributing writers.
The Dodgers and Giants and A's will get sites. The Mets and ChiSox - maybe, but not likely.
And yet the main site format still sucks.
I agree 100%.
The biggest negative is for about 10 years, BP has needed a site redesign. Now they launch these market exclusive sites with formats far superior to the main site. Come on BP - that's bush league.
Fix the site that got you here to begin with.
The only thing I will add is this. I don't like BP losing its talent either. But I remember when <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/author/kevin_goldstein">Kevin Goldstein</a> left I was very disappointed. I remember thinking "great... now the prospect department is run by some unknown named <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/author/jason_parks">Jason Parks</a>. This will stink."
And, obviously, it turned out great.
On the Mets' finances, what Alderson and the ownership say no longer matters at this point. It's obvious the Mets have virtually no extra money whatsoever. Alas, MLB is "OK" with the situation and expresses the utmost faith in the Wilpon's ability to rise from the ashes. It's a ruse obviously, but nothing can be done to change it.
Wow...it's cool just seeing all the alumni post in this thread!
Fantastic article. The ethical concerns are fascinating.
Agreed. They look great for the long term, but the Cubs are extremely overrated for 2015. Pittsburgh and St. Louis both have better rosters.
Excellent points. I also think the Cubs are getting overhyped. Nice future, but it hasn't arrived yet.
I have a feeling the hype is going to be greater than the performance in 2015.
I can't imagine the Dodgers braintrust isn't at least considering firing Mattingly at this point.
When Jason Parks replaced Kevin Goldstein, I remember thinking that there was no way BP could improve upon what KG brought to the table. In my opinion, they did.
Same holds true here. Odds are, things will get even better because each prospect team adds to what the previous team built.
BP is a machine.
It seems like Texas, Chicago Cubs, Houston, Boston and Tampa are always ahead of the crowd when it comes to hiring the best and the brightest scouts and analysts. Sucks if you're a fan of [insert the other 25 teams here].
Not to mention, The Professor hit on Marcos Molina when Baseball America completely missed the boat on him.
Yes it does.
One of my all time favorite authors here. Fantastic talent and superb sense of humor. Congratulations, Professor Parks!
Makes you wonder if they might package Pederson, Urias and one of the current outfielders in a winter deal to get Giancarlo Stanton.
Point taken. Then trade Pederson to someone for a 3b or 2b. Either way, it seems like the Dodgers are wasting an asset.
Why are these games not televised somewhere? I've wondered that for several years and you'd think it would occur to a network (MLB) to pick them up.
I'm surprised the Dodgers haven't made a move with one of the outfielders to make room for Pederson.
Yes, because Boston suffers from underexposure. For sure.
Excellent take. I despised his dumb and coy act, especially in regards to PEDs.
Zachary Levine NAILED it. Bravo.
The Mets have been notorious pansies over the last ten years. I can't remember the last time they retaliated.
I gotcha. Yeah, the Mets are definitely selling the "future is bright" card lately. I'm much more cynical than that.
Just a question - how many recent Mets prospects have been overhyped?
I don't like the fact that one team's inability to sign a player grants them another pick in a similar spot the following year. Other teams should not have their "earned" position dropped down a spot because of a team's failure the season before.
Maybe have some national broadcasts of the AA All Star games?
I've been here since roughly '03. Now that BP has gained a wider range of exposure within the baseball industry, it's safe to say readers can expect to see even faster turnover of the writers. I've watched some high-profile alumni leave - like Joe Sheehan, Christina Kahrl and Will Carroll. And yet, Prospectus continues to find excellent replacements. And worth the price of a year's subscription? Please...that's not even a question. The site is fantastic.
I hope for Wilmer Flores' sake, the Mets trade him. Clearly Alderson and Collins aren't fans judging by the amount of time he spends on the big league bench. I hope he goes somewhere else and becomes a solid regular.
Wow....anyone else feel old looking at these pictures?!
The growing popularity of dynasty leagues makes knowledge of the minor leaguers essential for continued success. I'm still amazed at how many of my league mates pay no attention to prospects whatsoever.
No Molina for you, Cubs fans!
The Mets certainly have a lot of pitching in the pipeline.
Without looking at their 40-man, I'd have to think it's safe to assume there's someone who could be dropped for Bryant.
I just wish the sport was more about winning and less about how long can we keep young stars at a cheap salary.
I find it surprising that Epstein has already come out and said Kris Bryant is unlikely to reach the majors this year. Doesn't that reek of a decision based purely on cost control? Talk about squashing any enthusiasm. Basically, we get to watch Bryant destory AA and AAA. What are the odds they make him play two months in AAA next year as well?
Gallo is a machine.
Ok...I am officially very worried about Baez now. Damn...
And that would be obvious to 99% of us. Thank you for keeping costs down, BP!
I think they're right. The NL looks incredibly boring this year.
Holy crap...that is awesome. Now if only I had high-speed internet. Lol.
The prospect section of BP is better than its ever been.
Any love for Vicente Lupo as a guy who could get on this list next year? I was disappointed in his stateside debut last year, but it seems like the plate discipline and power are legit.
Awesome. Entertaining piece. I look forward to a season full of ESPN melodrama.
Professor, which player currently in the 76-101 range has the best chance to be in the top ten in 2015?
Sorry for the off topic, but the BP Annual has started shipping!!
In the last few years, the BBWAA has made the story about them and not the greatest baseball players in history. And the HOF seems fine with that.
$20 for a fantasy baseball strategy book is crazy.
-1. Haha. Really?
Professor - is this a bottom five farm?
Love to see a huge trade that no one sees coming ahead of time. But all the movement from the last two weeks probably crushes the chance of that happening.
We'll agree to disagree. I'd keep Murph for a return like that.
They should have used the sarcasm font.
A lot of reason I'm glad the Mets got Grandy is how highly the Tigers and Yankees fans speak of him.
I hear ya. I'm not a big Murphy fan, but he's a 3 win player. They can't trade him just to trade him.
That's a mild surprise to me. They seem more of an "upside" system with more lottery tickets and younger prospects. But hey....Prof knows more than I do about it.
This is more of a top 15 than top 10 farm though, correct?
I would never give up Murphy for that small a return.
My god....if the Mets trade Murphy for garbage like that, I want to be put under. That trade serves only Baltimore's needs.
True....but you can't win many games 1-0.
Terry Collins 6th?! Wow.
This has been some of the worst strike zones in a World Series I've seen in years.
Baseball fan porn.
I love BA and BP. Been subscribing to both for 10 years. But I've noticed some bias at BA with some of their new writers. Not so much against any team as they are very, very pro a couple front offices, namely the Cubs and Texas.
BP - share your wisdom with Baseball America....please! Because they omitted Syndergaard on their year-end All Minor League team and said that CJ Edwards was better.
Wow...nice job, BP.
Man this is a great column.
Great year, guys. Thank you.
Doesn't it seem like the rate of TJ surgeries per year has increased over the last 5-6 years? Maybe its just me.
Awesome. Thanks Gabe!
Wow....you're right. OTB hasn't been around. That sucks.
Very overrated team, in my opinion. They traded an excellent prospect for Denard Span, who is awful at the top of the order.
And the shutdown remains the dumbest thing I have ever seen in baseball.
I have to think at some point, Texas is going to have to trade from their surplus in the middle infield. They have nowhere to play those guys.
Flores is going to make many experts look dumb.
Wow....fantastic article. This is case in point why people subscribe to BP.
Fielder at #10 overall? I'm not seeing it.
Lol.....and now it looks like he's going to get suspended. Probably safe not to buy his power afterall.
I'd love an explanation why you don't buy Puellos power, if its not about Biogenesis. His power dwarfs Tyler Austins and Christian Yelich.
I remain deeply offended. ;-)
The most glaring omission, in my opinion, both here and at BA. I'm fairly certain he's being dinged because of Biogenesis, because on performance alone, he's an easy Top 50 guy.
I find it interesting, because most BB writers go out of their way to defend Ryan Braun, but a prospect's name appears on a list and its "guilty as charged." I don't understand the dichotomy.
I have found texts to be the quickest, most-efficient way to begin negotiations.
Pardon me, high A.
I find it curious that Buxton would rank ahead of Taveras as well. I totally get the "rising star" thing, but wow....that is quite the endorsement for a kid in Low A.
Did Rafael Montero merit consideration?
We use a hybrid category. 1 point for a win and half points for each of QS, complete game and no-hitter.
Very true about Jose Valverde. Detroit would be wise to snag a reliable closer. Question is - who? Maybe Jonathan Papelbon?
Worth the subscription price by itself. Outstanding.
Guys - this column is awesome. Wow...great stuff.
Yeah....I don't get that either. He's the biggest problem MLB has right now.
I have two sons, ages 9 and 6. They find baseball boring and gravitate to football and basketball. It saddens me, but what can you do? I didn't have Nintendo DS, internet, Wii, etc when I was a kid. I went outside more and I learned to like games that were deliberate.
Also, I don't think having playoff games start at 8:30 eastern helps either. But old Bud is all about the almighty dollar first and foremost.
100% agree. Love negotiating via text. Quick and to the point. Plus, 99% of the time its how you get a timely response.
Yeah, safe to say that line of thinking is probably going to bite them in the fanny.
Yeah....where are the scouts' takes? Those were cool.
I know these things are total crap shoots. But everywhere you look this spring, just about everyone is picking Washington. I know they have a very good team. What surprises me is how many people consider them so much better than teams like the Reds, Tigers, Cardinals, Rays, Rangers, Braves and Giants. I guess I dont see why the Nats are overwhelming favorites.
This article speaks to me. I have celebrated and suffered over the years as an owner of the Scherzernator.
And 99% of BP readers thank you for it.
You new here?
Man...that is excellent writing.
Don't feed into the NY media. The Mets have been irrelevant for five years now. They need something to talk about. Johan won't be a part of this team in seven months. Over dramatized, non-story.
I doubt that. People compare them to Generation K. Problem with that is, those guys were never Top 30 overall prospects at any point. Harvey is already up and dominated in half a year. Wheeler is very close. And they have a boatload of arms on the way, including Syndergaard, Mateo, Montero, Tapia and Fullmer. They won't all pan out, but odds are the Mets are going to have some dominant pitching in a year or two.
Yeah....I think the NL East is going to be ridiculously loaded in a couple years.
Adding prospects into fantasy leagues makes it even more fun.
You're right. 1987 ALCS was Tigers vs Twins
I'm surprised, not upset. I find it surprising such an inconsequential move was pointed out. That's all.
I'm a little surprised the Mets made this list. The Byrd signing was minor league deal. Talk about marginal and low-risk.
My point is more that Michael Bourn brings little to the table other than good defense and speed. He has no power whatsoever. He's a singles hitter. Instead of "speed-only" player I should have said "two-dimensional" player.
Just not a fan of a team that is rebuilding giving 4-years and an option to a guy that is 30 and not a run-producer. The Mets need run producers, not Michael Bourns. I just don't see what we missed out on. We dodged a bullet.
I look at it like lets wait for a better option rather than giving Bourn that kind of money. Bourn is much better than what we have but 2013 isn't their year anyway. The thought of paying a speed-only guy into his mid-30s makes me nauseous.
Yeah - kudos on the book, guys. Love the changes.
Good stuff, Eric. Thanks.
Not sure what the big deal is. They admitted they looked into Upton. At the price of Wheeler or Syndergaard and Montero, I wouldn't have done it either. Upton is too much of an enigma.
As far as Bourn, for the Mets and their present situation, he wasn't worth four years. A 30HR hitting outfielder might be, not Michael Bourn.
Why Michael Fulmer and not Domingo Tapia? Thanks!
Wright has been injured seriously twice in 9 years. That's not quite "injury prone".
Tulo is a free agent in my auction league, but I know there won't be any discount. He's tempting but I agree with Paul - you can't pay full price. And I can't imagine many leagues were he slips under the radar and goes for less than that. I'm going to pass and snag a reliable guy like Elvis Andrus instead.
As opposed to the Rays signing Escobar and the Sox signing Uehara. Just my opinion of course, but those moves don't compare, especially Uehara.
Gonna follow the same line of thought as Reds....not sure how the Dickey trade for the Mets didn't make someone's list.
Top 5 farm Professor? Or 6-10 range?
The pitching is awful. Can't see it.
Wow...me too! Awesome idea. Dynasty leagues are becoming more and more popular and you guys are recognizing that. Thanks!
I'm not a Phillies fan, but hasn't Ruben Amaro done his damnedest to sabotage Brown's chances? He was brought up too soon and ever since it doesn't seem like he gets a prolonged chance to play.
Subway. Time for a five dollar 11-incher.
I have to say, I agree. I don't see it with Tejada either.
Puff, puff, pass, PECOTA.
"He is a manager that knows how to handle people"
Wasn't it Gibbons that got into it with Ted Lilly on the pitcher's mound years ago?
LOL. I know! I'm not a Cards fan at all, but man that is an impressive farm. Wow.
Is it healthy to have a man crush on Oscar Taveras?
I'm surprised BP almost completely ignored the story.
I agree. But this supersensitive world of today does not.
I live near a reservation. You see members of the tribe wearing Indians (Wahoo logo) hats and Redskins hats all the time.
Who is this offending anyway?
Who, pray tell, is worse? Milwaukee?
I like 14-team mixed dynasty with 40 man rosters the best. I've tried only leagues, but losing players with they are traded out of the league is too much.
You have a size 8 hat, John? Wow. That's Bruce Bochy material.
Braun will get in. Hell, Bonds probably will eventually, as he should.
The stain on Braun's reputation won't go away. Sure, he will have a HOF career, but he's going to have to wait to be inducted. I mean Mike Piazza never failed a test...
Wasn't it acquittal on the fact that the sample was mishandled? I understood the story to be that his sample was positive for elevated testosterone and it was supposed to be mailed to the lab for confirmation. But the tester sealed it and kept it in his refridgerator. As far as I understood the story, Braun got lucky that the testing agent was an idiot.
Murray Chass said he used steroids. Case closed.
I truly believe BBWAA will destroy the Hall. Hey just ask the merchants in Cooperstown. Theyve suffered loses two years running and now no one
will go. Add that to the growing disgust towards the Hall by the everyday fan. The HOF really is in trouble.
Link for the evidence on Piazza please.
Great read. Im done with Hall of Fame to be completely honest. I don't care what the writers do. Theyve made it about them and not the players and I'm not taking part in that.
Negative police alive and well I see!
They could offer Miller or Martinez and Oscar Taveras and get it done in a second. Maybe add Trevor Rosenthal for good measure. Then the Fish could keep Taveras in AAA all year and have him under control until 2019.
The Yankees fans trade proposals are gems.
And the effect of inflation has been permanent. Clayton Kershaw is a free agent this draft (we have salaries and contracts). He will go for over $40 easily, which I find insane to pay. I will sit back and look at other free agents like Mat Latos and Jordan Zimmermann.
I've been in a 12-team auction league for 10 years. We started with 10 teams and added one team in two consecutive years. I found the inflation hit the elite players - especially the elite pitchers - the hardest.
Yeah....he was a good one.
Happy 2013 John!
Longterm, I like their outlook. I just think they might have a more uphill climb next year. Of course, they could add Justin Upton and change the narrative.
I think the Rangers will take a step back. Their pitching isn't special and they've lost too much thunder.
Loved the Nolan Ryan show!
If you had to put a percentage on it, what percentage would you give to Vicente Lupo being in the Top 10 next year?
Thanks, professor. I'm sure Martin Kove is proud of Sandy.
This is certainly a Top 15 farm now, right?
Pretty nitpicky to negative someone for a comment like that.
As a Mets fan, I love the deal.
Yeah...if thats the return I would pass.
Gotta figure the Phillies will be completely out of prospects at this year's trade dealine.
I don't. That team is all kinds of nasty. Who knows what happens in the playoffs, but they are a heavy favorite to be one of the five teams from the NL. That's more than those Redskins could say.
Mets and OF??? More like Mets and LF, CF, RF, C and closer.
Why would they jettison all that salary and the bad contracts to take on more? Does Cherington have any idea what he's doing?
If you were running the Royals, would you offer Starling to the Mets for RA Dickey?
This is not a top 15 farm, right? It seems like the weakest Boston's farm has been in years.
This all has one common denominator. Bud Selig.
My bad....5 complete games to 2.
Probably not. Dickey had a better walk rate, was just about even in strikeout rate and had a much better k/bb ratio. And then there's the whole 9 complete games to 3, which even though its not an "advanced metric" is still more impressive. Dickey was better. Gonzalez wasn't even second best, Kershaw was.
Love to know who it was that thought Dickey wasn't as good as Gio. HA! Hi Mike Rizzo!
The fact they didn't get d'Arnaud makes the deal a huge loss for Miami. That team is out of Miami within five years. No one is going to show up now.
They may look for power with Bay, but they won't find any. He has the bat speed of a 50 year old. And yes, he needed out but it was a two way street....the Mets and Mets fans needed him gone as well.
Mets and "three outfielders" didn't make it?
Wow...this column has a ton of potential. More please.
No worries....I believe the vast majority thinks this is great. I'd say its better than before.
One team I believe could really help itself via free agency is San Diego. They could contend with the right additions.
I would agree with you. Thirdbasemen are so scarce. Sure, they could play Daniel Murphy there, but he's far from Wright on both sides of the ball and it creates another hole at second. And personally, I don't trust Wilmer Flores to be the future 3b either.
Trading Dickey makes a lot of sense. Starting pitching is the only strength of the organization. Deal from that strength and sell high. Teams like Toronto, San Diego, Houston and Kansas City could all use a dose of Dickey.
This is awesome. One suggestion....bleu cheese should be added next to bacon in the 8 category.
Is there another team in MLB with more overweight players than the Tigers? Cabrera and Fielder are great players, but they're also fat. Young and Peralta are too fat as well. 25 fewer pounds and maybe Fielder scores on that game 3 play at the plate.
FOX certainly hurts things. McCarver is an idiot and Buck just seems disinterested.
I know for me, and I didn't watch more than a total of five or six innings, once Verlander stunk it up I lost all interest.
Now that Arizona have moved Young, you have to figure the only way Justin Upton goes is if a team vastly overpays. And who wants to overpay for an enigma?
When you're a Red Sox fan that consistently overrates your team's prospects.
R. A. Dickey
Non playoff teams are pretty much out of On The Beat now.....come on John, throw us a bone!
Has there ever been a player more unappreciated by his fanbase than Rodriguez and the Yankees fans?
The postseason OPS' of Jeter and Arod are almost identical, yet Arod is a postseason choker. The NY media hates him and have spoonfed their bile to Yankees fans for years. It is a joke.
Envisioning Justin Williams to the Mets at 11.
Tonight has the look of a mismatch favoring Atlanta. Because its baseball, and things rarely go as expected in the playoffs, I have Cards 4-3.
At some point, he's not a sabr guy that would be a great manager, he's a sabr guy that can't manage.
The baseball media loves Acta, probably because he's a SABR-minded guy. That is good - I'd want my manager to believe in sabermetrics too. But somehow he has to get more out of the players than he does. I know Cleveland's roster is thin, but they quit on him too. He's a bright baseball guy, but something seems to be missing, besides better players.
Clarkson! My neck of the woods.
Not an A's fan, but man I hope it does work this time.
I know they have Scioscia signed for years, but how can he keep that job if they miss the playoffs? Has any manager done less with more than this guy?
Very true. Much better than the afternoon or not at all that we were getting.
Am I the only one that thinks Bauer is slightly overrated? Way too many free passes.
Well Dan, its taken you all of three articles to become a "must read" at BP.
Another great job Brad.
Best of luck B-Mac.
Good job Brad! Keep it up!
Maa...classic BP. Information here you'd never get anywhere else.
Congratulations, Kevin. I can remember not long too ago offering congrats when you got the job here after the Daily Prospect Report days at BA. Good luck - it seems as if Houston has some better days ahead for sure.
I would agree with some of this. I wish the scouts would be identified. I know it won't happen, but its hard to take them seriously. Especially with they refer to Kris Medlen as a future Cy Young winner.
That front office type talking about the Mets obviously hasn't watched them the last two weeks.
The guy has a bat. It has to play somewhere. I contend his defensive limitations are overstated, that's all.
That's what gets me about Nats fans through all this. Many of you are convinced you'll be in the playoffs every year for the next decade. That's crazy. Baseball rarely works that way. The Nats have a nice team and what SHOULD be a good future. But you never know.
I have a feeling if the season ends in the NLDS with a healthy Strasburg on the bench, you guys won't take it so well.
If Dan Uggla can play second, I think the Mets can get by with Flores at the keystone. Its not like they have a gold glover playing there now and Flores can certainly hit for more power than Daniel Murphy.
Boy I remember the days when Kotchman was considered a future stud. He was going to be in the Angels infield with fellow All Star Brandon Wood.
Yeah, I don't see it either. I would expect that Boston is targeting 2014. If anything, I could see them trade away someone like Lester this winter for more prospects.
OH man...that was good.
Valentine makes a convenient scapegoat. Next year he can collect their money from his livingroom or from behind the bar at his restaurant. Either way, he won't have to deal with the prima donnas in that clubhouse.
Trading one for pitching help this winter, perhaps?
That's just it. They are a team that is becoming easy for everyone to hate. BV is not without blame, but these players have brought most of this on themselves. Beckett and Pedroia seem like clubhouse poisons. Pedroia is apparently the kind of guy that looks for a spot on your back to stab while he's smiling and shaking your hand. They've even got Gonzalez in on the act now too. I think Theo added too many big contracts to the lockeroom and an overall sense of entitlement took over the team. But whatever the cause, this team needs to be blown up.
If there are a bigger bunch of whiners in any one clubhouse than Boston, I'd like to know where it is.
Sandy Alderson has failed to build a bullpen for two years running. I'm sure he'll be shopping from the trash bin again this winter.
Oh you poor lawyer. Just barely scraping by I'm sure.
But he makes a valid point. We are getting incrementally less than we did in 2011. I second the thought that you should just charge $40 a year and include the ebook. That way we only pay once and BP still makes more money.
If Mason Williams was a Mariners prospect, he'd barely make the Top 100.
We all know that you can't predict the playoffs. ANY of the teams will have a shot, including the NL West winner.
I like the cautious route (1) too. Wait one more year and then take a look.
I don't even know what you're talking about man.
I hear ya. But it wasn't me that said that. I didn't hate the article, but I would prefer regular Monday Morning Ten Packs, that's all. The subscription fee we pay is still well worth it.
Yeah...or they just didn't like it. So what? Is that a crime? Does that somehow offend you?
Not a fan either. I love Monday Morning Ten Pack and this wasn't the real deal. I'm far from mad about it, but I hope it returns to normal next Monday.
A BASEBALL!!!!! Oh my....it's the Holy Grail!!!
I don't get some fans' fascination with getting a stupid ball.
This is exactly what I mean. Nolan Ryan has evolved into a cross between the Incredible Hulk and Chuck Liddell.
Just my opinion, but it seems like this fight has taken on legendary status. Its turned Nolan Ryan into a 45-year-old MMA fighter. No doubt, Ryan fed Ventura some good shots on the mound but I'm not sure that wasn't a more even fight then people "remember."
Besides all baseball fights are similar in that they never get drawn out very long. They are almost always broken up fairly quickly.
Odds that Machado sticks at SS?
I agree. But KG's ratings are different than say, BA. I just wonder how much emphasis he places on defense. It seems like players that aren't good defenders or don't have a true position get downgraded.
Is it safe to assume defense is a significant factor in your ratings?
Surprised Wilmer Flores didnt crack the mid-40s, especially when guys like May did.
Good move for both the Pirates and Jays, but I really like it for Pittsburgh. Snider should be a perfect fit there.
Well you know, Mets fans must have a sense of humor!
Wow!! Glad to have to here. Great addition and welcome!
Agreed. Awful deal. Why would anygive give Street a long term deal? Wow.
Agreed. Bourjos, Pena, Segura would have been even better.
Ozzie and Jeff Loria just don't mix. I doubt that marriage is lasting much more than another season.
wow...I like the new look OTB!
It really is nice to see the Pirates back.
I bought At-Bat 12 a few days ago. (I have Extra Innings on DirecTV). At Bat is awesome. I would highly recommend.
What about times games start in the postseason? 8:30 EST is crazy if attracting young fans is part of your long term plan.
So sick of this guy's act.
The new draft makes for some strange occurances. The Mets had enough money left on deadline day to give second-rounder Teddy Stankowicz a little more than slot money. They refused to offer him more than 90% of the slot allowance. No one will ever know why.
But why would you even draft a kid with the 73rd overall pick, if you weren't even interested in offering slot?
Baseball America had Stankowicz as a third or fourth rounder, so they reached, but why would you even take the guy there?
Kudos to the Nats, btw.
He is going to make a nice addition for someone.
split the sample in half and he has 51 steals and 10 caught stealings...it just looks high because of the sheer volume of stolen bases.
So glad the Mets passed on Gallo. (shaking head)
Richie Sexson fell off the face of the earth of few years ago.
Bud Selig cannot leave fast enough.
But at least I wasn't driving drunk.
Yes he's busy. He owns several cars that need to be driven while intoxicated.
As a Mets fan, I find it absurd that some people are down on Castro. The guy is a great hitter and he's what - 22?
As a Mets fan, I totally agree.
I'd bet a moderate amount of bank that Teheran gets shipped to Milwaukee in a deal for Greinke.
Here's hoping the Mets don't trade any prospects.
same here. I thought he and Oscar Taveras were the two favorites for POY.
I agree. It seems like a good part of the hype is because he's a Cub.
I was really becoming a huge JJ fan in the past year. I still am of course, but it sucks he's mostly gone. BP has pretty much turned over since 2009. Good new writers too, but its too bad they've lost so much in the last couple years or so.
The fictional bios of the first GIF are fantastic.
Good stuff. But a question lingers....is the head brought to you on a silver platter by Patricia?
Tracy will be doing something very conventional soon - updating his resume.
He is unfair for hitters right now. The movement he's getting in the strikezone is ridiculous.
We are all idiots on occassion.
Fernando Martinez and Adam Miller are two others.
Alex Escobust ...I mean Alex Escobar
Brandon Wood has to be one of the biggest busts in the last 20 years. He was supposed to hit 40 homers, win MVP and the Nobel Peace Prize.
The SNY guys have said he throws two different knucklers and a fastball.
I would like to nominate Shelby Miller.
Wait a minute....Oscar Taveras is NOT going to solve the debt crisis in Greece?
The only thing I would mention is Dunn's weight. He must have dropped 30 pounds between last year and this spring. Physically he looked awful last year.
Tim Collins is great. I hope he becomes a Billy Wagner clone.
Actually, the Cards probably WILL win another title in 2015, the way things work for them. They'll be due by then anyway.
Matt Cain is probably the least talked-about, underrecognized frontline starter in baseball. Glad for him.
I have to agree. I can't see it for those two teams that quickly. Washington, Tampa, Texas - absolutely.
Disappointed that you don't foresee Zack Wheeler's Game 5 clincher in Citi Field against Toronto in the 2015 series.
They have done a nice job. The Correa pick was both unconventional and correct. Luhnow seems to be the right man for the job of rebuilding the team.
BP....the only place you'll see a prospect compared to a "coarse musk". Awesome.
I liked it.
Another thing with Detroit is Max Scherzer. Is there another pitcher with a higher 'stuff' to 'results' ratio?
The Numbers Game is fantastic.
Please fall to NYM.
The Mets farm is mid-pack and getting better all the time. But its pretty thin regarding bats. I hope they take a stick, that's all. Giolito's injury scares the hell out of me.
The injury concerns are big too though. To me, as a Mets fan, they need a bat. They have a lot of pitching on the farm. They need power.
I hope your Mets selection is wrong. I want no part of Giolitto. Wasted pick if he sticks to his guns and doesn't sign.
Sounds like the Twins can get Buxton, because word is Houston is taking Appel.
I know you want to take the best available player, but I can't see the Mets taking a pitcher. Their system has a lot of pitching and, at #12, there won't be a "must have" arm available. I'm hoping for Hawkins, but I doubt he falls to their pick. His power is going to put him ahead of that.
3 Mets....times, they are a changin.
KG - what is the absolute highest you could see Gallo going?
I believe Blackburn is a righty.
I think people thought maybe I was slighting this piece. I really wasn't - I thought it was great. I'm just being greedy and asking for more. ;-)
I actually laughed out loud. Thanks!
I was just asking an honest question. That's all. I've been a KG fan for years and he's had mocks here before. To push that below the viewing treshold seems like a bit of an overreaction.
Just wanted KG's take on who he thought would go where. But, judging by the negatives, it obviously offends people.
21 years of labor peace is great, but that still doesn't asbolve anyone in regards to 1994. That will always be a joke.
This is nice, but can we get a mock draft too?
I don't think the Mets will ever get a no-hitter. They are destined to be the only team never to have one.
You made a dumb comparison. Probably not the first time.
No. I asked about Bauer. I don't recall Moore having control issues in AA and AAA.
KG - Is Trevor Bauer a bit overhyped? I mean there are some serious control issues.
May I ask for the rationale behind the Astros and Mariners ahead of the Mets. I know the Mets are not an above-.500 team, but that seems like a reach. Especially Seattle.
On a side note, it is incredible how many big-leaguers don't use proper bunting technique. All he has to is have his left hand further up and behind the barrel and it wouldn't kick back on him.
You are becoming a must-read, Mr. Miller.
Motherf***er! Great stuff!
Not a problem.
The Mets hold an option for 2013. Its not Wright's walk year.
MY bad - I just noticed he pitched in college. That would explain it.
Davis looked like he has an idea of what he was doing? Did he have a background on the mound at all?
Darnell McDonald on the other hand....ouch.
And fantastic writing. KW really should see this.
That was the way to go out. Bravo, Kerry! Helluva career.
Why do you guys rarely do Android versions?
The manager is next, and honestly it will be well-deserved. I'm not sure there's a skipper out there that has done less with more than Scioscia.
That's good stuff, Ben.
Love the Craig Wilson reference.
He'd make a nice closer right about now.
Or two....because Collins just said Frank Francisco is still the closer!
What event? The BP events? I wish man...I live in NY up near Canada. I'm an hour south of Montreal.
Yeah...he is one thin dude. Isn't he like 6'6" and 170lbs?
Anyone else get the impression that Robin Ventura is in over his head? First he names Santiago the closer, when he was clearly not his best reliever. Then the team says Sale is the closer, yet Addison Reed gets the next two saves.
That picture of Sale makes my elbow hurt.
Personally, I think the Mets story has been beaten to death. The Bobby Bonilla contract is old news by now and Mets attendance is actually up. The Mets as a trainwreck narrative is getting redundant and overstated.
Basically, he sounds like Rey Ordonez part deux.
You guys know I like the Mets, but - man - is Bryce Harper is fun to watch.
I know I sleep easier knowing that the government is spending time and tons of money working to stop the scourge that is Roger Clemens and his possible PED use.
Meanwhile, it's just a matter of time before another baseball player gets a DWI and walks away scot-free.
At what point does Mike S start getting some heat? He's done very little with the talent he's had for the past several years. The Jeff Mathis thing last year was beyond ridiculous.
Isn't Vaughan old for his level?
It makes me laugh that grown adults would not give a ball away. I've never caught one either, but I could care less. It's a ball and you're a middle aged man.
Well I guess I mean not mega-rich like Boston, etc
I have to say - I do not like the Cardinals - but man, what a great job they do over there. Year after year, they fill holes with their farm and contend every single time on a modest budget. They are a model of production and consistency. And they don't have to be saddled with a contract that will probably be an albatross in five years.
But who's being the bigger idiot? BV or the Boston fans?
What does Patricia think?
He's got a wicked arsenal. I just think that pitchers get individual results from pitches thrown the same way, that's all. Some of the movement he gets is ridiculous. If he maintains his command, he's deadly.
Why is it that when many Asian pitchers come over, some people assume they throw a never-before-seen pitch? Didn't we go through this with the vaunted gyroball?
It never ceases to amaze me how the Boston media and many Boston fans fail to recognize that Theo Epstein did most of this damage. Ben Cherington's trades this winter were awful too. King Theo gutted the farm - think Justin Masterson might look good in Boston right now?
But hey - Bobby V makes a great scapegoat - for the fans, media and the players.
Hey - don't take me wrong - I think the Angels have a bright future. I love DiPoto as GM. Pujols will start raking very soon. But I think we can all agree that the last few years of that deal will sting a bit.
But kudos to Arte Moreno for going for it.
Good stuff. Are you sure Chet wasn't Tyler Pastornicky?
He's still terrific, but be glad your favorite team doesn't have that contract. Wow.
Yeah....its just out of place.
"Springer maintains great balance at the plate. He keeps his hands back and the barrel of the bat in the strike zone. He uses all fields, but can pull the inside pitch when needed. He could stand to be a bit more disciplined. He has a fantastic ass."
I think he means the schtick is old.
What is it with scouts occasionally talking about player's looks? I've noticed that in spots through the years. To me, it negates everything they say. I mean, do we really care what a dude looks like? I don't get the point.
I would say Matt Bush takes the cake. Poor performance and a dirtbag off the field.
Sam - this is outstanding.
I've never seen anyone run like Gomez. I remember when he was a rookie with the Mets, he got a single. Then he advanced first to third on a one hopper hit directly to the rightfielder. It was ridiculous.
My god is Bourjos fast. I wonder how his speed compares to Reyes from 2006 and to Carlos Gomez now?
I'd go yard.
One small bone to pick. I'm not sure its safe to assume all BP readers would look as bad as Barry Zito did. Sure, we might strike out. But there are probably several of us that would at least look competent doing do. Zito looks ridiculous.
Hadn't seen the Cespedes highlight.
He has shades of Slammin Sammy...complete with the pimping his homeruns. I like it.
Ozzie Guillen never ceases to amaze. What do you give him in Miami? A year and a half?
You're definitely worth the subscription price, Mr Parks.
It's official. The Mets are a mid-market team now.
Good to see the Ten-Pack Back!
Being a Mets fan will sap your enthusiasm for Opening Day as well.
It might behoove King Bud to pay more attention to the younger generations rather than concerning himself solely with the wishes of the major networks. MLB has the oldest average age of their typical fan. It's no wonder kids aren't as interested when playoff games start at 8:40 pm EST. And opening day starts in Japan at 6 am.
Only Bud Selig could author a start to a season like this.
I would bet they extend Bumgarner and let Lincecum walk.
Just my take, but they read like a fan who will not admit the win cycle for his team is turning. He believes they will keep on chugging along. Personally, with a shallow farm and aging core, I don't. That's all.
Ah....Baseball America ranked the Phillies farm in the Top 5 in 2008. Kind of shoots down #3.
#25 this year, by the way.
You Phillies fans just don't want to let go off the peak, do you?
Listen - it was worth it - your run won a title.
But the reaper is coming.
I think the Mets have to take anything they can get from Santana.
I am still surprised no one is picking them not to win the East.
I would have for sure, but I'm just using them as examples of their former prospects that are gone.
Ruben Amaro is no more than another Omar Minaya, except he was handed a pennant winner and Omar was given a rebuilding team. He signs free agents and excels at trading away great farm talent. Imagine Travis d'Arnaud and Anthony Gose on the 2013 Phillies? And Singleton a year later after they let Howard walk (assuming they didnt sign him to the massive extension)?
They may have the willingness to spend, but there is next to nothing in the minors. As far as signing marquee talent, haven't you noticed that teams are locking up their great young players before they hit free agency?
What will really hit Phillies fans is when they don't extend Cole Hamels and he takes mega-money from someone else willing to give him the years. And you'll be able to thank Amaro and Howard.
One thing that will happen in the next couple years is a fan backlash on Amaro. He has decimated their farm system and is responsible for the Howard contract.
He's going to pay the piper a couple years from now.
I don't think they're that good. They have three fantastic pitchers and a horrendous offense.
I'm with you. Best case scenario they are a .500 team. I cannot fathom picking them before Detroit, but stranger things have happened in baseball.
LOL...odds are Collins will blow his lid once this year!
Solid roster. You have speed to burn. I think WHIP might be a category where you lag behind a bit, but you should still have plenty of Ks and saves.
Befitting of the franchise.
BTW, RARE is the only way to consume steak.
Yeah - they are night and day different.
Outstanding. More of this please. A ++
I'd prefer a little more baseball content. I like the eccentric stuff too though.
I think I agree with you.
I am surprised more publications didn't pick someone other than the Phillies to win the division. Just my take, but I think the Nats are going to win it. The Phillies offense is horrendous.
I'm going to watch the Mets to watch "The Dude" Lucas Duda abide.
Just a general crucifixion.
Billingsley could stand to get in "the best shape of his life" though. He's carrying some significant extra baggage.
What about concerns about Sanchez' character? Didn't that crop up last year and why didn't it get filed under "The Bad"?
Brad Holt?! I figured he was selling insurance somewhere by now.
Agreed. I'm not sure whose idea this stuff is, but can we let the BP authors pen their Great American novel on their time and not BPs?
Not that BP pays badly, but that other venues pay more. Otherwise, why would these folks leave. Its only an assumption, which is all the readers have. BP has never once addressed why all these writers have left.
Well then its the level of compensation obviously. BP won't admit that of course, but its safe to assume.
Well Sheehan, Silver, Goldman, Normandin and Carroll all left in the past few years. I guess I should have broadened the scope. You guys can counter all day, but the roster at BP is mostly new people. Some of the readers just wonder why.
The pay must be at least a factor. I've been a subscriber for 8 years and I've never seen as many longtime writers leaving like they have in the past year.
All the best Steve.
Sounds like a push.
Thanks man! Works perfectly!
Its contemporary, but I don't know why more people don't talk about Rich Harden. Deft move on his parent's part not nicknaming him "Dick."
The immediate conviction is a byproduct of the steroid era and simple human nature.
Yeah - he's a free agent in our auction league. But luckily we don't draft until 3/18. I'm thinking Bud will have a decision by then. Maybe.
It seems like MLB takes forever to decide anything these days. There's the Braun thing and look how long it took King Bud to rule on the Theo compensation. And then he included a player to be named!!
A suggestion: can the "background with player" section be removed? 95% of the time its the same thing. The fact that Jason has a BP byline probably indicates that he is qualified to opine on the prospects in question.
I wish Vegas had 79 wins as the over/under for the Mets. Easy money if that was the case.
Imagine the day when Mets fans can read articles on their baseball team instead of the owner's finances? Maybe by 2015. Maybe.
Good read, though, I'm just beyond frustrated at being held hostage to Fred Wilpon's pride.
That's quite the douchy take.
Incredible that comment was below the threshold. What a bunch of morons.
Outstanding, Jay. This Carter fan thanks you.
True. Their offense is actually decent - slow, but good on-base and surprising power. The rotation is awful. But yeah, they probably aren't Houston-bad. Still, I can't see the Mets anywhere but fifth place in the East.
No. As soon as I saw it was written by a Phillies blog, I didn't bother. I mean of course they will say the trades were fair.
Man...that brings back memories. I remember GWRBI being listed in the newspapers too.
Good stuff Larry - you are a must-read at BP.
Gotta say....I am surprised the Mets didn't make this article. They seem like a solid bet for worst record as well. That's a nasty division and the Mets stink.
"The Phillies have never ripped off Ed Wade"
Talk about an exaggeration. J.A. Happ and Roy Oswalt beg to differ.
It still boggles my mind that Selig sat back and watch Ed Wade feed his players to his buddies in Philadelphia for their overhyped garbage. J.A. Happ still makes me laugh.
With that logic, how do you explain Jose Reyes?
This is one of those articles you either love or hate. I'm fail to see the value added as well, but its nice to have the variety.
I can't agree. We have no idea if the Mets will ever spend money again, because if the Wilpons retain ownership they probably won't.
I know a lifelong A's fan and he is very pleasantly surprised and totally stoked about this move. My guess is that was part of the method behind it - give the A's fans some hope for the future.
Or maybe a weekly article titled "The Other 101" where Jason or Kevin give scouting reports and anecdotes on younger prospects that didn't crack the year's Top 101.
I hope the house of cards crumbles and burns.
It so ridiculous how it skirts the boundaries of legality. But KING BUD'S friendship with Fred keeps him from actually doing anything about it.
payroll will be around 92M.
I think KG has a stalker on his hands.
james - now we get it - but you should have let us into the joke from the first post! Entertaining stuff though!
Besides, it's not as if KG claims superiority in his rankings. I've yet to hear him proclaim "I am the king of all prospect gurus...all hail my genius!"
The only thing is, guys like Crow and Sizemore have become major leaguers, hence they were pretty good prospects. Right?
I can't imagine an owner hated any more than Mets fan hate Fred Wilpon.
Been a Mets fan for 30 years and this is the worst I have ever seen them. Because of Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz we are now hostages to nonstop stories about finances, bridge loans, Ponzi schemes, minority shares, revoked press credentials and debt payments.
This is just awful. I am a huge baseball fan that has next to no interest in the coming season. Usually in February I am chomping at the bit for baseball. This year; I don't care. Jose Reyes would have never been let go had Sterling been in better shape.
And almost every Mets fan I know is as apathetic as me. We don't care anymore and we certainly aren't going to any games. The Wilpons aren't even trying to be competitive at this point. Why should the fans care?
For me the surprise in Jameson Taillon at 13. Seems a bit high, especially when he's ahead of guys like Walker and Arenado.
Those righthanded pitchers will get ya everytime.
That's what she said. (Couldn't resist)
You're welcome - they're a good company with good leagues and smart owners. I've played in several leagues there since '04.
Check out www.tpfs.com. Our email email@example.com
tell him Matt sent you. This company runs 40+ dynasty leagues and they're always looking for new owners.
Anything that increases the popularity of baseball is a good thing. Yeah it's ridonkulous, but if it gets folks interested, so be it.
And yes - that Texas-Braves trade was far worse.
They missed the playoffs, but they were right there in '08 and enjoyed a fantastic year from Santana. They gave up garbage to get him. As I mentioned before, overpaying him on the extension was unavoidable.
Brandon - if you don't recall they were in the 2006 NLCS and were contenders in '07 and '08. So, yes, a frontline starter was a savvy investment at the time, despite how bad the contract looks now.
True, but that 07-08 team needed a true number one starter. The trade gave them that. And there was no way the Mets could avoid overpaying him on the contract extension - that was a given.
Its easy to say now that the contract is bad because the Mets are awful, but in early 2008, it looked pretty good and it gave a contending team an ace.
IMO, the trade remains a massive win for the Mets. Sure, Johan is damaged now and probably will never be the same. But they got two excellent seasons from him with a team - in 08 - that contended all year. And at that time, the Mets needed an ace badly.
Of course, the Mets are stuck with an albatross for two more years (Santana will never hit the innings threshold to activate the '14 option). But that's the price you pay.
I have a sense of dread that they will be able to maintain majority control of the team. Having Selig as a buddy has benefits.
I'm not going at all. The Wilpons aren't getting a dime of mine. And the LoHud controversy is all David Howard, Wilpon's personal "yes man".
Who said the Mets can pay their bills? Do you realize how much debt they owe by 2014 and 2015? This is the same ownership that just took out a 25M "bridge loan" from Bank of America and has yet to repay MLB a 20M loan from last year. They owe more than 400M on Citi Field due in 2015. And this is without knowing what happens with the Irving Picard case next month. They lost 70M in 2011. Do you actually think Mets fans are going to attend games this year? when the ownership is just going through the motions?! So where is the increase in revenue in 2012? Sure, they drastically cut expenses, but revenue will fall again as well. The Wilpons have this organization caught in a death spiral right now.
Just a fans' perspective, but I don't believe the Wilpons financial troubles will go away. So, MLB has two choicesd - either force the Wilpons out (which we know they wont do) or contract/move the team. No one can tell me that the Mets are even trying to field a major-league caliber team right now because they aren't. Even if the farm system pays dividends down the road, there is no evidence the ownership will invest in major league free agent talent anymore.
To me, the situation is untenable.
On a baseball note, how hard does Texas try to resign Hamilton now? That's going to be interesting to watch as the season and next offseason unfold.
Maybe the "Tampa Bailout" is more likely.
Just guessing, but the comment probably got negatives because people don't see what Kinsler's religious beliefs have to do with this story.
Sad news. Hamilton seems like a terrific guy, I wish for all the best for him.
And 2013 will likely bring Jackson to yet another new team. Its incredible how many teams he's been on at such a young age.
I would love to know which exec would take all five big leaguers before Cespedes. I agree with him and I'd be curious to see who it was.
excellent - good job with Bowa too!
Is it just me or does Alomar sound incredibly obtuse in that quote? Wow...
Oh man....I scrolled through mine - yowza. I hear ya Randy. and do not worry about it bud! I have made TONS of douchy comments myself.
Being a Mets fan sucks.
Excellent point on free agent spending. Eventually, the Jays will have to spend some money, especially on pitching. It seems like they both have and are developing a lot of bats but lag a bit behind with arms.
Gotta say - I love the teal cover. Uplifting, spring-like color!
Congratulations and good luck Mike. I think the Stros have a really nice front office coming together - have a great time with them!
The best for overplaying height and weight is pro wrestling. In his heyday, Hulk Hogan listed as 6'8" and 302 pounds. I stood next to the man in the late 80s. He's around 6'4" and 260-275. A big dude, but not that huge.
Awesome article. I would bet Bonds' true dimensions were around 6'1", 250lbs. And CC is at least 330 lbs.
I'm hoping MLB contracts the Mets and gives me no choice but to find another team. Really. I mean Boston has one team, I think New York should too. 98% of New Yorkers follow the Yankees anyway.
The Wilpons have no desire to field a competitive team and are basically holding the Mets fans hostage because they won't sell. Contract the Mets and some other team and go back to 28 teams and 4 divisions.
I'm a Mets fan and this is the team I fear the most - not Atlanta or Philly.
I would counter that the current mental state of a Mets fan is apathy.
Can you actually picture Jerry DiPoto trading Kendrys Morales to New York?
Not to mention, it allows the Mets to play Lucas Duda in left and it opens up right for Kirk Niewienhuis or some other youngster.
As much as I'm a Mets fan that can't stand Burnett, that trade would make a lot of sense.
Selig is just like a boss I had once. Completely unable to retire. Their very existence is defined by their job. It's sad really.
Hoo-Rah on a new Owner for the Mess.!!
Shows you how far the Mets have fallen. 33 comments...this list used to get twice that. The apathetic Mets fan has arrived.
Florida is a heavily populated state and they can't pay people to go to games there.
Just my take - for the majority of baseball fans, you can never convince them that Bud Selig was anything more than a bumbling egotist who presided over a strike, a world series cancellation, a PED scandal and a tied all star game. All the while the NFL passed MLB in popularity.
I am in that group.
Selig was horrendous. He's also a bad liar when it comes to knowledge of PEDs.
To me, the Hall lost their credibility when Jim Rice got in. It's the Hall of Very Good. Jack Morris will fit in beautifully.
Good stuff, John. Excellent. You are one of the best at BP.
Love the ephemera as well. I hope Cole can someday live up the to standards set by Mr. Ass.
Over the past year, half of them are rescheduled. Either they just remove chats all together, or have them on time and for a longer period as you suggest, KBarth. Somehow, someone at BP needs to find exactly who can chat and when they can actually do it. It seems like people are scheduled but the chat is "low priority" and if something else comes up, it's rescheduled.
For a pay site, that's totally unacceptable.
Fan Graphs is free and they rarely miss a chat time.
The chat rescheduling has gotten ridiculous. The chats start late more often then not too.
LOL - The Forecaster PALES in comparison to the BP annual. Christ, Shandler outsources just about the entire book now anyway. They used to be known for fearless forecasts and now they basically "project" the same season as last year for almost everyone.
That's weird....I didn't even realize the prospect lists had stopped. That sucks.
Impressive.....by the way, when is the long-talked-about website redesign coming?
Wouldn't have been a story with 90% of teams.
This happens in KC, Cleveland, Pittsburgh or Seattle and you'd never know about it.
The bottom line is the Mets have a very valid point. Dickey wants to do this and his ego made sure everyone knew about it too. He could have just waited until he retired and then done the same thing.
The fake outrage by the fans makes me laugh. I realize non-Mets fans get their jollies hating on the Mets, but it should be saved for occasions when they deserve it. Like letting their homegrown star leave.
I would counter that its VERY debatable that Josh Reddick is an everyday outfielder. I'd say he's a fourth.
Just my take, but I think it was an awful deal for Oakland. Beane got beat again.
In their defense, (and I HATE the Wilpons) the Mets are in such a position that they can't do anything without garnering negative press.
The owners are broke and the team is awful. Where they are now is a bad place and the media loves to jump on them, especially this time of year when there is nothing to talk about. Check out Hardball Talk sometime.
Daniel makes good points - and I agree - however this is a late December baseball story. Not newsworthy. We all know other players do similar "risky" activities in the offseason. But Dickey went public with his plans and because its the Mets (and not say the Royals) it gets media attention and gets slammed.
This is the exact kind of baseball writing (in December) that no one but BP has. Excellent.
I have to say I'm impressed by the Cardinals' offseason. The central is weak and they've done a good job shoring up the lineup in the wake of Pujols' departure.
Plus, Beltran and Adam Wainwright are sure to have fun reminiscing about the final out of the 2006 NLCS.
I don't old Prince will be signing anytime soon.
254M over 10 years ain't happening.
I TOTALLY agree. The kid has some great PR people and that will make him rich. I don't see it either, dutchman.
Is anyone else wondering what the hell the Rockies are doing this winter? I can't make sense out of any of their moves.
I agree. The hype machine on this guy is off the charts.
LOL....yes, because we all know every single great American player plays in the WBC.
I see your WBC and raise you a Diasuke Matsuzaka. Japanese players rarely translate. NO....Chinichi could not beat the world champs.
Stay overseas, please.
Totally agree with Kasgard. Chunichi couldn't go more than five games with the Cards anyway.
Another thing.....half the time guys click on the blocked posts first, lending an opposite effect to the original intention.
I don't take any offense to the plus/minus, nor do I think free speech was impeded. My personal opinion on the matter is people want to believe Braun is innocent because he's a "good guy", which he seems to be. I just can't imagine a test coming in with elevated synthetic testosterone being a false positive. It could happen, but I doubt it.
I guess I just don't get it. I realize there's an insider joke with Tom Verducci at BP and other sites, but I don't get this piece. That aside, I am a big fan of Jason's work.
What does this have to do with baseball, other than Verducci? Strange piece. Emma Span-esque.
I hope he's innocent though...I just doubt it.
I think the high levels will turn out to indicate he's guilty as hell.
Ok...then why did this even get out to the media then? Who or what has something to gain by this getting out, other than possibly some (non-BP) media outlets?
Weird is right.
Well let's see. He tested positive and appealed, but no positive test has ever been overturned, right?
Another black eye for MLB, newly-crowned MVP cheated. These clowns just don't get it.
It's a joke. I wonder what will come first - the Wilpons sell or Selig makes them sell.
I absolutely believe one of the two will happen.
But at least your team won a title, even if they are setting up for a fall. So in 2014 or so, when the Phils and Mets share the NL east basement and the Nats are owning the division - at least you guys can say you won something out of your run.
LOL - good read, but can you hand out sample bottles of Prozac before you have people click on it? ;-)
I have been a Mets fan for 30 years and I am fully ready for this rebuilding. Bring it on.
In the meantime, I will follow the same path as my fellow Mets fans by staying far, far away from Citi Field. Fred and Jeff are going to get an education in Mets fandom. If you continue to lose and you slash payroll, you will pay at the gate. Attendance for Freddie and Jeffie will be abysmal next year.
Fred said last spring: "we're snakebit, baby"
yeah....you haven't seem anything yet douchebag.
We all had to figure that eventually Arte Moreno was going to get his guy - but WOW - what a shocker.
Look out Texas.
Disagree on Jose Reyes. That's all on Florida as an organization to contact Hanley and iron out the details. Typical of Loria that he failed to do this. That's not Reyes' responsibility; he's a shortstop and he was hired to be a shortstop.
Agree on the Marlins as a franchise, though. And they will trade Reyes to the Yankees in a few years once Derek Jeter is done.
The bigger question is when do the Wilpons give up on a team they can't afford OR when does Bud Selig step in and give them the boot? (friendship aside)
They lost 70M this year and they'll lose more than that in 2012. There is absolutely no reason to go to CitiField. None whatsoever. Mets fans are harsh realists. After awhile they will stop showing up. The day of reckoning for Fred and Jeff has arrived.
Ok signings, IMO. Francisco was slightly overpaid. Pagan trade was decent just because we got Ramon Ramirez. But - damn - this is going to be an awful ballclub.
Apologies for a completely off-topic post. But I wanted to reach out to some smart fantasy players. If any of your are interested in playing in active, competitive dynasty pay leagues, send me an email - firstname.lastname@example.org
I don't know....I think they can contend for sure.
Light at the end of the tunnel, but Fred and Jeff can look forward to losing 100M next year because no one is going to watch this team. Hopefully a couple more years of massive financial losses will result in the Coupons selling the team.
Cubs fans have it worse, but god is it painful liking this team. It gets worse every year.
well they're a lot better than the Mets, as is ever other team in the NL east. FML.
I thought about not resubscribing once too. (I hate changes).
But once I realized there was still tons of great content for a low price, I re-upped and I always will.
Speaking of old annuals, anyone ever bought a used copy from the late 90s? I bought the 1998 annual a few years ago for like 65 bucks...LOL...glad my wife doesn't know.
Impressive Mr. Rose.
So do I.
Dude, that stash is awesome.
Absolutely!! LETS GO METS!
I know Loney has an idea of what he's doing at the dish, but to me, the lack of power puts him clearly behind Ike. I agree with you.
Honestly, and I am admittedly biased, but how is Ike Davis vs James Loney even close?
What I resent is he's a felon that plays a kids game and makes over 400k a year. Like I have said, in any other realm, he would have lost his employee. Not in professional sports.
And he apologized. Boy, that's tremendous. I'm sure her parents feel much better now. What a great guy.
Welcome John! I'm a Mets fan that fondly remembers Frank's days with the Mets in the 90s.
I knew it was a matter of time until people defended the guy. This is all part of big business American sports. He's a piece of crap, but, yeah - what a fastball. LOL
I once worked in the sexual assault field. Yes, people get falsely accused. But when the alleged perp takes a lesser charge and pleads no contest to it, generally he knows he did something illegal.
But alas, young Josh is a superb athlete, so while he might have (and probably did) rape an unconscious young woman, the society of big business American sports gives him another shot. It's pathetic.
IMO, Boston would be lucky to get Bobby V. I am biased - I'm a Mets fan that loves the guy, but what a perfect fit for that team.
Generally, when you rape someone, you don't need any more character flaws. Being a rapist is a pretty big one. Lueke can stick his "born-again" garbage, which is nothing more than PR.
Hilarious that someone minuses that.
Josh Lueke is a piece of shit that doesn't deserve to earn a living playing baseball. But because he can throw a baseball 96 miles an hour, some teams are willing to look by his hideous character flaws. Disgusting.
Oh absolutely on the ego. BV could have lost that clubhouse before the playoffs, something Washington is not apt to do. Its just when you look at the 2000 Mets' roster its incredible that he got that team to a championship.
Revisionist history, but I wonder what would have happened if Bobby Valentine was managing Texas in the world series.
I wouldn't touch this guy simply because of the increase in workload the last two years. In my opinion, someone is going to vastly overpay. I would bet the Yankees.
Wil Myers looked really good at the AFL all star game. The kid definitely knows what he's doing up there. I don't blame Dayton Moore for not wanting to swap him for Martin Prado.
Me neither. Arizona has a ton of young pitching coming. A guy that would make some sense for them is Aramis Ramirez, if they can get him on a three-year deal or shorter.
Kudos to the A's for posting this at BP. Very sharp thinking on their part. I wish I qualified. Good luck to those that apply!
At what point do the Mets decide to fire their trainers. This is a chronic problem. And Ike Davis' injury was ridiculous. Only the Mets can turn a hangnail into a season-ending injury.
Berg!! Nice piece man.
Sometimes you have to sit and wonder how Brian Sabean managed to win a championship.
They're following the Mets' plan by the looks.
The Joe Mauer contract is going to hurt them badly. It already is.
We didn't need to, with that description!
10 bucks this guy is a bust. He just doesn't look like a baseball player. Let's see him against the best pitching in the world.
Yeah really. Good point. The guy looks like a bodybuilder or better yet, a late-90's baseball player.
The Mets are looking for a CF...
Oh I think Darvish will be very good. Its just the level of expectation. BP readers and writers know better than to go overboard, but many people will. Like you said Derek, especially if he lands in a big market.
I'd love to see Kansas City get him.
When are fans going to realize that the Japanese stats do not translate? Darvish will probably be a good to very good major league pitcher.
But we all know that as soon as he signs and the hype machine gets started, some people will claim he's destined to win four consecutive Cy Youngs.
Perhaps an analyst will even claim he throws a pitch that never existed until he came along.
Just imagine this team with Fielder and Sabathia. wow.
MY bad....it said ONE of the most exciting. Reading skills are good.
Nice piece, but "most exciting series in a generation?"
What about 1991? 2001? I'd take either one of those.
In my opinion, this postseason was filled with terrible defense. It was pretty good on the drama side, but it lacked in fundamentals. I'd be interested to see how the total number of errors compared to years past.
I wonder what the Cubs first winter will be like - specifically will they splurge for Prince Fielder or hold back and take inventory for a year, similar to the Sandy Alderson regime.
It's ridiculous having the All-Star game determine home field. Another one of Selig's idiotic schemes. He can't retire soon enough. He is perpetually tinkering with (and ruining) the sport.
Whoever signs CJ Wilson or Edwin Jackson will be getting ripped off.
It's obvious at this point that Joe Torre has become Bud Selig's lackey, who takes the heat on controversial decisions. They both need to go away.
So am I.
Keep in mind, Sandy Alderson is announcing significant changes to the Citi Field dimensions after the Series. Rumor is they are installing an eight-foot wall in front of the Great Wall of Flushing in left (with seating behind the new wall) and they are drastically bringing in center and right-center.
I'm an east coaster and a die hard fan, but to be honest, I don't stay up watching the playoffs anymore. It's not worth being up until 11:30 or so unless you don't have to work the next morning.
I just find it ridiculous that they change what they did for 162 games once the playoffs start. I'm sure eventually the games will start even later. But what does Selig care? He'll be dead by the time the true effects of this are felt in another generation.
Right. And 90% of the games are on during the day.
But on the east, the games start at 7 all year. Then the playoffs come, and in the later rounds, the games are usually on at 8:15. Its no wonder kids are gravitating to sports like football. Its on at a decent hour.
Look, Bud Selig sold the sport out to the networks years ago and they, not MLB, decide when the games are on. Trust me on this, down the road baseball is going to become less and less popular with Americans.
MLB will only have itself to blame in 30 years when no one watches the sport, save for the remnants of Generation X.
Between late start times during the playoffs and their refusal to add appropriate instant replay, the game is shooting itself in the foot.
Kim Ng is two minorities though, Asian and a woman. Maybe they got two quotas filled with her. LOL.
But I agree, putting Omar's name in there is borderline fan-abuse.
Don't worry...it's probably a minority interview to fill the quota. Minaya's magic while with the Mets has ensured that no able-minded owner would ever hire him to ruin - I mean run - their franchise.
Nor would I. It was simply a good team coming back on a good team. Not a big deal.
CC Sabathia is on line 1, Mr. Carty.
I'm rooting for Texas in no small part because I don't want to continue hearing how smart Tony LaRussa is. Yes, he's the guy smart enough to fall asleep at a red light while driving drunk.
He's a great manager, but he's no Einstein.
I not getting the link between social anxiety and postseason performance.
So who is the more overrated GM: Theo or Billy Beane. Epstein is good, but he inherited most of the 04 team and has made several horrible free agent signings. Other the other hand, he did make key trades in 04 and built the 07 team. And he won two priceless championships. He's good, but I'm not sure how much the Sox lose.
Enjoy Prince Fielder Cubs fans, because you know that's coming. Typical Theo move.
Latos looked really good down the stretch and he seems to have a personality that would do well in New York. That trade possibility makes a lot of sense both ways.
Great season by the Brew Crew, but man did their pitching let them down. I wonder where they rank as far as the discrepancy between regular season ERA and postseason ERA. They were awful.
I agree with Richie....Zack Greinke SUCKED. For a guy that had to mouth off prior to the series, he has come up small.
Just curious, why does BP use outdated photographs all the time?
How does Fielder fit? You would have to have him at DH, effectively blocking Jesus Montero. I agree that it is a Yankee move, but that would necessitate trading Montero.
Madison Bumgarner third on the Cy ballot seems a year or two early.
That's part of the "problem" the Braves have. They have so much starting pitching, they don't have room for all of them in their rotation. They need to trade some of the excess for a big bat.
I'm a Mets fan, and I would have rather been in the race than a 77-win afterthought.
"If I were running the Red Sox, I would sign Wilson and Bell or Ryan Madson (or both)."
That's why you're no longer running a team, Jim.
So, to date Bowden has what - 5 teams signing Jose Reyes as his big move?
I'm sure that makes the Sox and Braves fans feel much better.
As a Mets fan, the Red Sox and Braves reminded me of 2007. In the words of Bill Clinton, "I feel your pain."
I fail to see how this will work for Florida.
I love MLB, but the NFL eats its lunch year after year after year.
Yes - I meant wouldn't.
On your point, this fanbase has been through enough in the last five years, that I really don't think a total rebuild would affect the bottom line more than the team's miserable performance already has. Citi attendance is down a full 20% from '09. Every single Mets fan I know has no expectations for 2012 anyway. They might as well rebuild.
The Mets aren't going to pursue anyone. If fact, I would be surprised if Sandy lets Reyes walk and trades Wright.
Great points on that type of fantasy owner. I used to be one. It's much better to take advantage of "that guy".
Duda is definitely a pleasant surprise.
Mets fan here who does not like #10.
I could only imagine the ultra-cheap Wilpons going against the Red Sox and Yankees. No thank you. They have enough trouble with the current NL East.
It's very debatable that Brandon Nimmo is the Mets best hitting prospect.
EXACTLY. The irony of ironies.
That's one of the most absurd comments I've seen on here - and I myself have made plenty absurd comments.
Thanks Steve. I was so irate that I took to a Facebook update to bash the hell out of MLB... LOL. I felt it was the best I could do.
Bud Selig is an outright plague upon baseball.
KG - You might be underselling Valdespin and Havens a bit here. They could be ready within a year and Havens, IF healthy, could be an impact secondbaseman.
Ha - I should have read whose idea it was. Jim Bowden - say no more.
I'm a Mets fan, but why would the Reds deal Grandal for Wilmer Flores? Flores is not that good. I would think the Reds could get a lot more for a 22-year-old catcher with a plus hitting skills.
On Reyes, I would rather see the Mets pass. That is too much money to invest in a player that is hurt all the time. Ruben Tejada would be just fine at short, a ton cheaper, and he stays on the field.
Only Bud Selig could pull this off. And I love how he deftly made Joe Torre the point man too.
Gotta go - I have to buy one of the $37 American flag hats that are made in China.
No one actually wonders why the NFL eats MLB for lunch, do they?
Funny to include Bay in the scouts views, because he's hitting as well as he ever has as a Met in the last two weeks. When you watch him, the first thing that jumps out is how far he stands from the plate - it's borderline ridiculous.
KG, Wheeler needs at least another year and a half in the minors, right?
The best part of this list is your self-deprecation concerning Brown, KG. Don't change!
Happy Labor Day everyone!
I love Jose Reyes, but I'm fine with whatever direction Sandy takes. Ruben Tejada is an excellent defender who is developing as a hitter. Jordany Valdespin and Reese Havens look more than capable of manning second base.
I have thought the same thing for years. They want a staff full of Jeff Suppan.
<---- Mets fan excited to see three Mets on here. Thanks Sandy!!
With a tremendous porn stache.
Also, Jose Reyes with possible replacements Ruben Tejada and Jordany Valdespin.
Thank you KG, this is awesome.
Do the Mets have any closer candidates on their farm?
I second that. Thanks for the kick in the nuts.
Is Bogaerts good enough defensively to stay at short, KG?
Bah...you don't jump on bandwagons!!
cough - Go Brewers - cough
Very nice to see the Pirates rising from the ashes.
I really do hope they get someone good. Ng would be a good choice. If they won it all with her, they'd put a statue of her outside of Wrigley.
I'm a Mets fan, and even in our darkest hours, I'm thankful I'm not a Cubs fan.
I agree with Bob. That Backman tirade was epic. It still makes me laugh out loud.
But light-hitting catcher is putting it very mildly. He's one of the worst hitting catchers of all time. You can't hide his ineptitude, even with a 2005 Vernon Wells.
Agreed. He's not the genius many make him out to be.
Great to see...good job Pirates.
Oh yeah...yes, absolutely.
AA is definitely better than Minaya, but I'm not getting the reference there.
Good stuff, KG, thanks.
AA is a very good GM, but have you ever heard him talk? He sounds like he's in the middle of puberty.
Somewhat off-topic, but at what point do the Rays become unsustainable in Tampa? They can't sell tickets to save their lives and they're locked into a lease deal with a turf-covered toilet for a stadium. Do they continue to exist purely on revenue-sharing?
I would put nothing past that petty schmuck Jeffrey Loria.
Loved the Cubs fan who thought the team wasn't playing up to their abilities. Made me LOL on my way to work.
What exactly is stupid about baseball fights, Ken? A team can only be pushed around so much before something has to happen, right?
2009 was as bad, if not worse, for the Mets. Its absurd and they really need to look at their medical team.
I didn't realize an exclamation point meant I was standing on top of a mountain with a megaphone. I thought I was conveying surprise.
No I do not.
There appears to be an anti-Met bias with some writers at BP, which is surprising now that Alderson is there.
That's what he should have done. Told Wren to pound salt and put Bourn on the block this winter. But I'm sure there were orders to cut payroll regardless of the return. I'm glad I'm not an Astros fan, thats for sure.
The Dodgers are a total joke right now. Ned Colletti is an idiot of the highest degree. He makes Omar Minaya look like Gene Michael.
On Rasmus, John has a great point. I remember the Mets sending Mike Hampton to meet with his father for pitching advice on an off day early in the 2000 season. Apparently, Hampton's dad noticed something off it his delivery. They met and went over his mechanics, and it ended up turning his season around. I wouldn't dismiss the effect Tony Rasmus has; he knows Colby better than anyone. The Jays' welcoming attitude toward the elder Rasmus is a smart play.
CRP13 - you might be right. I just think Wade should have insisted on one of the top pitching prospects. I'm sure Wren would have rather traded his mother than do that, but that's what I believe they should have been after. Especially considering the Braves were pushed into a corner a bit with the Giants and Phillies' trades.
LOL - I did no such thing Randolph. A critique isn't a declaration of war, is it? I don't know why some readers here take it personally when an article is critiqued. I did not jump on anyone.
I just pointed out that Mets could/should be considered winners if teams like Houston - which arguably got crushed on one of their deals - are "winners".
Ed Wade got destroyed in the Atlanta deal, IMO.
Houston a winner and the Mets aren't? Wow! They rid themselves of a $17.5M dollar vesting option and traded a strict rental for a top 40 prospect.
The Mets haven't been dysfunctional since Alderson got there.
I can't believe Arizona gave up on Allen. Wow.
Someone please say it already.
Coming in 2012....Bud Norris to Philly for a case of sunflower seeds.
I wonder if Ed Wade was wearing his Phillies jersey when he made the deal.
Second the take on Fernando Martinez.....ugh.
Which is too bad, because she'd probably be better than Jim Hendry or Mike Rizzo.
What are the odds that Kim Ng actually gets named a GM? I'm not sure any team - whether right or not- will actually do it.
Oh Come on Steven. The "sky is falling" take on the Mets has been beaten to death. They have a strong front office for the first time in two decades. Let's wait longer than ten months on the job to sound the Mets death knell.
No worries, KG. Realistic is the way to go.
No doubt it's too high. He may not amount to anything, or he's a #3. We'll see in a few years. What I liked is how the experts elsewhere said there was "no way Alderson was getting a top-40 prospect for Beltran."
BP seems more down on Wheeler than Baseball America is. We'll see who's right. I see a 21-year old who dropped his walk rate 20 percent this year while maintaining a 10k/9 in a tough hitter's league.
I hope Tony LaRussa's managerial genius is enough to outweigh the monumental stupidity of this trade from the Cardinals end.
The Braves would be deadly if they just added a big bat, but knowing Wren, they won't. I can just imagine Carlos Quentin in that lineup. Or Michael Bourn.
Three-year deal to an AL team to DH and he flops.
11 games wins the World Series
Good stuff man, thanks.
As a Mets fan, don't worry about those two minor leaguers, they can be bottom of the barrell prospects and we're all good!
Can we get an explanation as to why Beltran won't continue to produce at this rate?
Waaaa.....waaaa.....but we can't offer Beltran arbitration! Let's offer the Mets a C prospect or just go get Jonny Gomes instead!
Given the current state of the Mets farm system, the smart play for Sandy is to pay the $6M and get a good prospect.
KG - Does Skaggs have a #1 ceiling?
The injury to Ike Davis could only happen to the Mets. Only the Amazins could have a player appear to sprain an ankle and then need surgery. Unbelievable. They'd better recite the Last Rites to him before surgery, just in case.
Instead of Clemens, how about we put the Congressmen that decided to try this and waste taxpayer money on trial?
That's good news - cant wait to hear it!
I doubt KRod is upset at all. The Mets treated him very well and he knows he'll make good money this winter anyway.
I still don't get why Altuve is a future utility man when he hits like this in AA.
Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling and Cohen are also excellent because they are the anti-Hawk Harrelson. They are anything but homers, that will dish out criticism to the Mets players when they deserve it. Harrelson can't root harder for the Sox on a broadcast if he tried. I like him, but he's a homer.
Well at long last, someone has filled the porn stache void left when Jeff Kent retired.
Wow...that was EXCELLENT.
Thanks man....will do.
Okay....I apologize for the Eff you. I read just the first post and then responded. Now that I see your explanation, I get what you are saying and point taken. I never really considered that. Thank you for the input.
Fuck you asshole.
No one knows. But the bone wasn't broken and healed in two weeks unless King Showboat was on HGH.
HGH is a possibly, that's all I said. My opinion is it wasn't broken anyway, but propaganda by St Louis. And the section on Pujols here basically said nothing at all.
While I generally like this column, the section on Pujols was absolute drivel.
LOL. Never said I was a doctor. But bones that actually broken don't heal that quickly. Go right ahead and drink the Genetics Kook Aid and minus me into oblivion ....I don't care.
No one comes back from a broken bone in Two weeks. Impossible.
Jordany Valdespin is hitting over .300 in AA with 10 bombs. Is this kid a legit prospect?
Yes exactly. My personal take is it was never really broken.
I knew the HGH would get negative'd. My point is how in the hell can anyone come back from a broken bone in two or three weeks? Genetics is every bit as lame a reason as HGH.
Bud Selig turned a blind eye on PEDs in the late 90s and this is the bed he made. Every time something like this happens - or a Jose Bautista - people are going to be skeptical.
You can negative, but remember - Pujols is in a contract year and there's no test for HGH.
Genetics or HGH.
Im a Mets and Reyes fan, but I think the choice between him and Tulo is extremely tough.
If Im Alderson, I either get two top prospects, or I take my chances in free agency. That's the only way to play it. If teams don't want to pay, then they can keep what they have.
Wow....I didnt realize it was for one day! I started Bud Norris!! LOL 192 out of 197, so the rest of my guys sucked too. I'll stick to traditional roto - but thanks Derek, that was fun!
You can forgive Mets fans for wanting to jump off the bridge though, right?
Cashman needs to get out of there. Its obvious Hank and Hal call the shots. Cashman's grumpy act is growing old as well. IE - the statements about not wanting Soriano. There was nothing to gain by going public with that unless you just wanted out. Get on with it already.
yeah! I know MASS didn't have the participants it used to, but it was fun.
How fat is Matt Adams anyway? Fielder? (5'11" 280)??
Speaking of games, whatever happened to HACKING MASS?
Is there a catch? This is 100% free?
I gotta say, it is really nice to see teams like the Pirates and Royals turning it around.
Jeffrey Loria is the biggest scumbag in Major League Baseball.
Morneau's done. He isn't the same.
Wow....I wasn't aware ANYONE was worse than Jeff Mathis.
Ike Davis is another one.
Put it this way. When I think of how hard Mets fans have it, I think of Cubs fans.
You're probably right.
The Cubs have three problems. Not much pitching, a bad offense and a rah-rah manager who's in way over his head.
Ooops....there's a fourth. Jim Hendry.
We have no idea what the pitcher said. Harper was being a douche but I would bet the pitcher was too.
Did someone say you were in a slow decline KG?
Cousins launched himself like a projectile at Posey. No problem with trying to blow the catcher up, but it looked like he was a linebacker taking out a running back that was being stood up by another defender.
Put it this way, he'd be fined if that was done in the NFL.
The Wilpons lie even while sleeping.
The first guy I though of when I saw the title was Adam Dunn.
Fred Wilpon can choke on a cock.
Yup, and Matt Moore and Jedd Gyorko.
All you have to do is scroll down to see a positive statement. In the first post, I was only expressing a degree of frustration in losing another good writer. That's it- I realize the sky is not falling. Been a subscriber since 02.
Here's a tissue, guys. Sorry I hurt your internet feelings.
I'm also wondering about the Amazins. BA says they are leaning bat (Mahtook, Michael). Shouldn't they get an arm? (Barnes, Guerrieri, Meyer)?
You're not fading Kevin. I haven't noticed anything wrong with your columns at all.
Well, Joe, how many writers have left in the past 12 months? That's all I'm saying.
Good lord, BP. You guys are a freaking revolving door!
It's part of the game, but Cousins needs one in his ear hole next time he comes up against the Giants.
Trading Reyes will set the Mets back five years.
And the Reds can keep Mike Leake and Matt Maloney.
Johny Gomes has gotten more mileage out of "grit" than any player currently in MLB.
I want NO PART of Jonathan Sanchez, thanks.
As far as I'm concerned, as a Mets fan, either give me blue chippers, or I'll take the compensation picks.
Its amazing how the Rays keep on trucking despite holding their prospects back. Right now its Desmond and next year it will be Matt Moore. You watch... Moore will be in AAA at this time next year with 10k per 9 and they'll be trotting out Andy Sonnanstine in the big league rotation.
It seems that almost every Mets infield prospect "can't play" the position they play. What's the deal?
Thanks for the encouraging cutline about Wright being traded! I'm heading for the nearest bridge.
I don't get why the Steinbrenners don't fire Cashman. He obviously wants out and 100 other guys could do his job with the kind of bank he has at his disposal.
Well, if they don't trade Reyes, they have a 15-day window of exclusive rights after the World Series.
I get the sense Alderson is going to put his stamp on the team and deal Reyes. I think he's going to find out his "stamp" comes with even more empty seats at Citi Field as the fanbase becomes completely apathetic.
Trade Beltran, Reyes and Wright....Beltran is a no-brainer, but to me, it would make more sense to trade Wright and build around Reyes. Jose Reyes is much harder to replace than Wright, who has become a flawed player with an ever-increasing K rate. Not to mention, the team getting Wright gets two more years of him under a reasonable contract. If you're going to trade one, trade Wright.
Typical Mets....call a guy up to sit the bench. He certainly could do no worse than the shell of Jason Bay's former self.
You were hit by the minus police because you questioned a joke that wasn't funny. How dare you.
Exactly. Not a fan either.
This is all about making sure a) they make more money now that the economy is in a semi-permanent funk and b) the aging Yankees continue to make the playoffs.
I think you are spot on.
I agree. This is just as good.
It seems blatently obvious that Cashman is whining in order to let everyone know signing Feliciano wasn't his idea. What a mess.
I think the argument is that you can't replace him; not that his best is yet to come.
Trading Reyes would be shortsighted, but I'd be shocked if he's a Met on August 1.
I hear a guy on the radio saying that Nishioka wasn't playing the double play properly at all.
The website could use a major overhaul as well.
Its been the exact same for years.
That isn't true.
We all know the Sox will mash...but that rotation is definitely their weakness. A guy like Chris Carpenter could make a lot of sense for them in June or July.
Very happy for Royals fans....I hope the big league team is good really soon.
Great job Christina...it was a move you had to make. You earned it and congrats!
The Grandy Man can!
Totally agree on Jason Bay. He's on track to be a colossal bust for the Amazins. No power and can't stay healthy.
I agree. It is all the rage right now to color anything Mets-related with puke green. It's simple sensationalism.
Mookie Wilson says hello.
But, seriously, you do have a point.
Josh Thole....you are hereby on your way, young man.
I cannot fathom why MLB ever appointed a bland douchenozzle like Selig to be their leader. He's a joke.
Yup...this is a very capable replacement for sure.
Excellent job guys.
Just a guess. But anyone who hasn't come back from a concussion in 8 months has something very seriously wrong.
Morneau will be retired a year from now.
What was the point of your comment other than to stir up the controversy surrounding the first article? Hence, douche.
Flores shouldnt be that low to begin with.
Great point about the '98 HR race if it happened now. It would be beyond nauseating.
That player on Miguel Cabrera and his drinking is spot on. I have a friend that is in the exact same state of denial. Some people will just not admit there's a problem.
In all honestly, no bull, Jason is putting out some of the most valuable fantasy info on the internet. This is great.
wow..for a fantasy junkie, this is great. I am resubscribing partly based on Jason's work here.
Glad you're back, John.
excellent...love the column, btw
There is no legitimate argument to keeping Castillo. Play Brad Emaus, with Murphy as a utility type off the bench.
Uh - Oh
Adam Wainwright may be heading for TJ surgery. Back to St Louis and Mozeliak called the injury "significant."
Purely based on a hunch, but I'd bet Morneau misses at least 50 games to start the season.
Flame away all you want, but PECOTA really is questionable at best.
I hear ya. Or just play Tejada there. Either way, I don't think Reyes will be worth the money. I'd rather spend the money on Wright.
Trade him and sign Furcal or promote Havens.
It's a convenient cop-out for those that disagreed with those that didn't like the article.
And lord knows we don't need to see another three-game sweep.
No way the Twins win it this year.
My only hope with a Mr. Met/Phanatic slash is that Mr. Met would be on top.
I agree with you and there's definitely more of this cuming. I mean coming.
Which means we'll get getting another dose. Might I suggest a tryst between Bud Selig and Pete Rose?
LOL....trust me Tiger, I don't care. Once a post is gray-barred, more people read it anyway. It was a reasonable post. But the rule on the comment threads is simple, disagree with the majority or disagree with BP authors and you will be minused.
My uncle was gay. The homosexuality isn't the issue for me. Its the fact that this topic was introduced to this site. Despite what some of the BP writers contend, this site is heading in new directions. Most I have enjoyed. This I found objectionable simply because it has nothing to do with the everyday baseball fan.
Book looks great...and keep the book in its physical form, please. We have plenty of trees.
Fangraphs is better....and no gay porn either.
I never said she was nobody, idiot.
Why exactly do those that didn't like it have to be labeled?
Do we have to like gay porn?
And this is why many people won't read your articles. If it's "entertaining" that people end up unsubscribing, may be you should think about why you write.
It will take more than this to make me leave.
Mr. Met slash Philly Phanatic would do it though.
I've subcribed for 8 years. I've watched this site lose legends like Will Carroll, Joe Sheehan, Nate Silver and Gary Hackabay. It just seems to this subscriber, one lone opinion, that the BP is heading in a new direction, one I'm not sure I want to be a part of. From these comment sections to articles like this - it all seems "beneath" what BP used to be about.
I'm sure Emma is a terrific writer, and the responsiblity for the article is on the editorial staff, but I really never expected to see something like this here.
That's good. Because the next time I read trash like this, I expect BP to pay us.
I'd never thought there would come a day BP would publish something about gay fantasy porn. It's garbage and something you'd expect to find at Deadspin.
I am still in shock that this was published on this website. If this is any indicator of the direction Prospectus is heading, I'm spending that money on Joe Sheehan's blog, where they talk about actual baseball.
Really, BP? Really?
Totally off topic, but where is On The Beat?
As far as Pujols on the Mets, it's all about the money. Should Pujols hit free agency and the Mets offer more than anyone else, they'd have a great shot at signing him.
Interesting...and yes, looking forward to injury analysis.
If Dolan takes over the Mets, I'm finding another team.
Pettitte in the Hall would be another positive indication that the institution is a complete farce.
a) he wasn't good enough
b) he'd be in while guys like Rose and Bonds aren't
Scott Baker is another one. Stat heads love him, but he puts out mediocre results year after year.
Challenge to anyone on BP: Find me one other source that ranks Nick Castellanos and Kaleb Cowart ahead of Wilmer Flores.
He's a four star guy at least. Put it this way, KG is giving four stars to guys who are inferior. To me it seems like KG slammed him for being a) slow and b) not really a middle infielder.
The counter is - so what? If the bat is special, the bat is special and will play anywhere.
Anyway you slice it, three-stars for Flores is ridiculous. But it will be one KG has to defend in a couple years...and get reminded of.
AA refering to Vernon Wells..."how aggressively they pursued him and how much they wanted him."
Mind to explode in 3...2...1...
Or it was your run-of-the-mill desperation move. I'd bet the latter.
For goddsake, if the two sides do anything in the next CBA, please fix the compensation system. No team should have this many picks. The current system is absurd.
Yup....I would have had surgery, sat back and counted my money.
Mike Scioscia isn't going to have to worry about the postseason for awhile.
Anyone notice where Bill Smith said he's "optimistic that Morneau will be ready for spring training?"
"Optimistic" is a lot different than "will be" ready.
wow... Nice article...I look forward to more from you, Jason.
I agree. Just not a "power hitter" per se.
Barton is not a power hitter. "More power" will be 15 homers a year.
The posturing by Pettitte is ridiculous. I realize he knows he has the Yankees over the barrel, but make up your mind already.
That's why this rating system is beyond ridiculous. That's pretty much how it goes....dissent and get a -5 within ten minutes.
Right, but what I mean is the line of reasoning that no steroid user ever makes the hall.
This is the same line of reasoning that's going to keep Barry Bonds out of the Hall. If Bonds is kept out, the HOF will have become a complete joke. MLB knew all along that these guys were using and they looked the other way because they wanted to maintain the rennaisance of '98.
I second this. That would be phenomenal.
I would agree with this. There's definitely been a void at BP since Will and his bevy of contacts left. On the Beat is an excellent column though, especially the scout's views.
He has to get in. His performance was good enough and there's no proof he did anything wrong.
It's not a grudge. I just don't think that's a Hall of Famer. Like I said, I knew I was in the minority - and I don't care. For some reason, saying Alomar doesn't belong enshrined pisses some people off. Fine.
Besides, the Hall is a joke anyway.
Then cheer loudly when he gets in. Have at it. I think the guy's a disgrace.
I know I'm in the minority, but I don't believe anyone who spit on an umpire deserves enshrinement. It was an isolated act, but it was also heinous and disrespected the game. He'll get in, but personally, I can't equate Robbie Alomar with the best baseball has ever had to offer.
The Mets missed the boat with Backman. He'll be somewhere else in 2012 and winning games in the big leagues. Such is life with the Wilpons.
I agree he should be higher, but remember, projecting these guys is 95% art.
Negatives for that....wow.
They are definitely building a contender for 2011. Just one more bat would do wonders...I like the Aramis Ramirez suggestion. Maybe even give the Rockies a call for a guy like Ian Stewart, who they seemed to have soured on somewhat.
In fact, I am extending my subscription based mainly on this and On the Beat. And of course Christina's work.
I have to say, these rankings have surpassed Baseball America's, in my opinion. I love BA's too, but I find Kevin's more useful and informative. The tweaks he added this year have been great.
Thanks. Very surprised on that. You're more down on him than most.
Kevin - besides Mejia and Harvey - is there any under the radar arms to keep an eye on?
If you could guarantee that, then sign me up.
I know their system is in shambles, but kudos to the Crew for going for it. They've built a great farm before and they just have to do it again now.
That's just it though. After those first four years, they'd be paying 30M for declining skills...till he's 40.
I just wonder why they haven't signed him yet. I mean the closer it gets to his free agency, the more likely it is that he's going to test the market. And we know someone will break the bank.
As a Mets fan, I can't see it being Alderson and his new approach. But I can certainly see the Cubs or a team like the Angels doing it. Someone will offer 10 years and around 28-30 per.
Omar Minaya is no longer in charge. And at least to me, Pujols comes across as a guy who'll take the last dollar. That's ok, because most Mets fans I know don't want him.
I pray to God it's not the Mets.
I get a feeling Pujols will leave St. Louis.
Blyleven's not going to make it.
I can't help it...I think the A's are going to be solid this year. If Chris Carter develops, he and Matsui will help lift the offense. You can almost see a SF Giants II coming over there. Personally, I like Oakland to push 90 wins and contend for the division.
I'm not an accountant, but I play one on TV.
If I'm the Rangers, I pull my offer and trade for Zack Greinke.
You have to hand it to the Padres. They got a nice return for a player they had no chance whatsoever of keeping after '11. Boston gave them more value than they would have received at most stops. That was a win/win trade.
I think their pitching is the question mark. That offense should be incredible.
At least the Mets will cooperate with you Steven. You can do their write ups anytime and nothing will have changed by March.
The Yankees just need to sit tight. He won't go anywhere else. He's just making himself look like an idiot.
Love to hear from the 2 that think that's NOT insane. Please, enlighten me!
and $17 million for Jeter is insane.
You aren't getting Upton without trading Montero.
I like the Twins, but I hope they don't get another chance at the Yankees until they have the pitching to get it done.
Ol Pedro has a ton of miles on that arm. You guys can have him. I hope the Mets pass.
I spent ten minutes trying to get it. I gave up.
It's dumbfounding how many people didn't grasp the meaning of Moneyball.
probably 4 or 5.
WOW. 5 five-stars. Royals fans, hope exists. Very interesting comparing the top 5 with Baseball America's. Good work, KG.
I totally agree. I hope the Twins miss the playoffs so I don't have to witness their continued futility once they get there. Here's to 82-80 in 2011!
I'm actually happy about that.
That makes sense both ways. The Braves have enough pitching coming along. They might take a step back in '11, but once Teheran and Delgado get there, look out.
The Mets are going to have an incredibly boring offseason - player wise.
I had a dream the other night that the A's were playing the Yankees in the 2011 ALCS. You never know.
I think the new front office is pretty much considering 2011 a building season, without saying that. They lose 45 million in payroll (mostly dead payroll) after this coming season.
Agreed. Garland is exactly what the Mets could use. He won't require a huge commitment and he'll give you innings.
He's a great fit for them in 2011 and 2012. But it's those age 38 years and beyond that are going to be real dicey. Any way you look at it, in a couple years, he'll be massively overpaid and probably barely above replacement level. If that.
Agreed. Makes you curious as to the futures of guys like Dellin Betances.
Totally agree. Hell, give him ten years and 200 million.
Heading to PNC next June...can't wait to see the park.
I hope the Yankees give Lee 20 million per for at least six years. In a couple years, they are going to be choked with massive, unmovable contracts like Jeter, Lee, Sabathia, Tex and A-Roid.
I think the Mets are a great fit, but I can't see Sandy Alderson spending on anyone this winter.
I totally agree about the start times. Baseball is so incredibly stupid on this issue. They are alienating the entire younger generation.
Thing is, King Bud will retire and still show up for work the next day. This guy won't stop until he's dead; he's that type of person with no life whatsoever outside his career.
Selig is simply far too old for the job. His arrogance keeps him on the post because he thinks baseball needs him. He needs to go away before he does any more harm.
Beyond crazy. But I think John has it pegged.
Totally agree. Extra wild card teams is a joke. But it will happen.
It was great that there was new blood, but it was far from a memorable Series.
I stand corrected. Thanks.
I just noticed that the BP subscription just went to $40 a year. This after we watch both Sheehan and Carroll leave in the last twelve months. And not one mention of this anywhere on the site.
I agree with Scareduck. At some point, the onus has to fall - along with the axe - on Gardenhire.
Sample size or not, its all about winning in October and he doesn't do it.
As a Mets fan I will say this. A guy like Alderson brings the gravitas that is needed for this team right now. A guy like Rick Hahn does absolutely nothing for the majority of Mets fans. He's an unknown who's never held the job of general manager before. He might work perfectly on a team like say the Rangers who are already good and have a great farm. He is not right for the Mets.
Other rumored candidates like Allard Baird have to be a bad joke.
Sandy Alderson is a known commodity. He's the only hire in this case.
LOL. That garners a negative rating?
All the best, Billy Wagner. A true ballplayer that gave it everything he had on the field and told it like it was off the field.
And look at it this way from the Mets perspective...they have 6 years of cheap service from a decent 1B and they don't have to spend $20 million a year to fill that position.
There was never an ounce of hype surrounding Ike. He's got solid power and a terrific glove. Mets fans have hyped many youngsters; they did no such thing with Ike Davis.
At least we no longer have to wonder why Cabrera is looking for work with a new team in mid-March every year.
Exactly what "hype" did Ike Davis receive?
Agreed. The Yankees are in their heads so bad.
I hope they miss the postseason next year just so we don't have to seem them fold again.
I accept that it's a formula that comes to this conclusion and not arbitrary opinion. I just experience significant cognitive dissonance when I realize I am paying for a site that is telling me the Blue Jays and White Sox are better than the Phillies. That's my only point.
Yet another arrogant prick at Prospectus. Thanks for showing your true colors Jay.
Then the formula is garbage.
If this is what "Hit List" is going to become, why don't you guys do away with it next year.
Like I said, I'm convinced this was just done to stir the pot. It's so asinine it's funny.
Oakland ahead of Cincy and San Fran....I love it. You intentionally stirred the pot on this one Jay.
This is insane. Philly looks like the best team in MLB by far. Seven teams ahead of them? You can maybe make a case for Tampa, but seven? That's absurd. Let's look at this thread again in three weeks and, Jay, please be ready to defend it.
The AL superiority thing is hogwash now as well. This is 2010.
The basic problem with Baseball HQ is they charge $100 for content that Fangraphs does better and for free!
I can't see the Rays taking this series. Their pitching - aside from Price - has been too shaky.
Good job. You know what makes me laugh? The guys at Baseball HQ always preach about their way and how successful it is. Yet, every time I see the results of these expert leagues, they're at the bottom. Scott Baker must have let them down.
Totally agree. MLB Network is awesome and the fact is, if you're a satellite subscriber, Dish Network doesn't give a damn about sports programming or baseball in general. I switched four years ago for this exact reason. By the way, the switch over takes about an hour....the installer just uses your cables from Dish and installs a new dish and receivers. It's quick and easy.
It is one massive collapse. They are lucky they aren't in a huge market. The heat they'll get will be nothing compared to the 2007 Mets.
Espn....gotta love it.
Great point. There's a serious talent drain going on here for some reason that BP won't elaborate on. Either way, it's not a good development.
You know what's hilarious about "the contest" that no one ever mentions? Dayton Moore has developed one of the strongest farm systems in baseball.
I'm sure he'll be gone soon too.
I wouldn't give Brandon Webb ten cents. He's done.
Best of luck Will. Huge loss for BP; this sucks.
Well they blew that story bigtime. Maybe he was being sarcastic, but it seemed like he wasn't.
As far as Will leaving, it's just one more reason to let the subscription expire.
C'mon, Will. You guys didn't nail anything on Rose. Why would you insist you did? You can't say that without an explanation.
The Mets have had the biggest ticket sales drop off this year and next year won't be any better. Fred and Jeff need to get their heads out of their asses or they won't have any fan base left. Mets fans are already jumping ship in droves.
Memo to fantasy players: Make sure to TRADE Morneau as soon as he has a productive and healthy April.
The Yankees won 87 games in 2000.
It's beyond ridiculous. Minaya has done next to nothing with that team and enjoyed a monster budget the entire time.
Well, in retrospect, they got Ike Davis, Jon Niese and Josh Thole, who all had major roles. Ruben Tejada played a lot too. Their pitching in the minors absolutely sucked though.
Yeah.....remember when Alex Gordon was "can't miss"?
The Mets suck. They are the worst run team in MLB. What a joke.
That's the thing. He may be great and the best Japanese pitcher we've ever seen, but the risk is HUGE.
