And Joe Maddon was born on Feb, 8, 1954, which is before the Billboard Hot 100 list was created (according to wikipedia). However, the magazine made separate charts of "Best Sellers in Stores", "Most Played by Jockeys" and "Most Played in Jukeboxes". The unanimous choice on that date was .... "Oh, My Pa-Pa", by Eddie Fisher.

My father was writing for "I've Got a Secret" back in the early 1960s and they did a version of "In the good old summertime" by having people chosen from the phone book sing out their last names. The kicker was that the guy named "Somerstein" was horribly off-key and got worse as the song went along. Only saw it the time it was on and still remember it vividly.

Minor complaint, which I made also last year: I like to read the BP articles from the bottom to the top, sequentially, via the "next article" button at the top of the page. But the Hit List page is a sink -- there is no "next article" button, so after reading it, I have to go back to the main page and start again. It would be easier (for me) if the Hit List were always the first (or the last) article in the day's offerings, or if it took part in the "next article" experience. Yes, I know this is a "first world" problem.

Kind of obvious, but I'm grateful for Baseball Prospectus (which I pay for gladly) and baseball-reference.com, fangraphs.com, hardballtimes.com, etc, (which are free). I'm grateful for your combination of data and analysis (and narrative) that would have been unbelievable to me as a teenager in the late 1960s, cutting out Yankee box scores from the LA Times after we moved west from NYC. I'm grateful that there are still so many more things to learn about this wonderful game.

According to the Baseball Reference game logs, Steve Trout's last two starts as a Cub in 1987 were complete game shutouts (with a total of 10H, 3BB, 8K and game scores of 81, 78.) He was then traded to the Yankees and had a 6.60ERA the rest of the year. The Yankees traded him to Seattle, and he was out of the majors by the middle of 1989. In his 25 remaining starts, his game score was above 50 three times. But yeah, it's probably Kazmir.

The Cubs are a game and a half ahead of the Astros now and the simulation predicts them to finish 5.2 wins ahead, and yet Houston is given fifth place and Chicago sixth in the NL Central. Why? If it's ordering by playoff percentage, both are at 0.0%, a tie, and "Chicago" even comes before "Houston" alphabetically, for goodness sake! The ESPN POFF for what it's worth, gives the Cubs .2% and the Astros .1%.

Another stunning loss. Is there a systemic problem forcing veterans to leave, or an organizational desire to keep people from being lifers? I just went to BleacherReport.com for the first time and it doesn't seem like I'll have time to figure out what's good there in the flood of content. Maybe Steve Goldman can whip it into shape. As for BP -- it's time to start an "Alumni Directory".

I was at the Toronto-Oakland game on (thanks to baseball-reference.com) June 10, 1979, when Oakland catcher and future Cubs manager Jim Essian hit an inside-the-park grand slam. It was really a triple with the bases loaded: the outfielder fell down while trying to get the ball, but the official scorer had a heart. According to http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/OAK/OAK197906100.shtml there were 2400 people in attendance on a Sunday afternoon game, after which the A's were 19-40 and the Blue Jays were 16-43. The good old days.
