"But since most of us don’t play in K/9 leagues, it is raw strikeouts we are concerned with, not strikeout rate." The big exception to this thinking, which finally dawned on me a couple of years ago, is if you are playing in a league with an easily achievable hard innings cap. If all of the teams are throwing the same number of innings, then you are essentially playing in a K/9 league.

Add another name to the list of Mets casualties; like the swallows to Capistrano, Travis d'Arnaud has returned again to the DL. As a moderately self-aware Mets fan, I found your inclusion of a special level of anguish reserved just for us to be wholly and hysterically appropriate. I think the team's handling of injuries is lifted straight from the Madoff playbook: start off with irrational exuberance, which eventually mutates into empty promises and rapidly diminishing returns.

I panicked last year and dealt both Brian Dozier and Joey Votto in early May, only to watch them carry other teams to victory. It was a good lesson in trusting my process over what is a long season.

Right now Giles is on a stretch of 5.2IP with 17Ks, with one groundout being covered up by the bonus K he picked up in his last appearance. If he gets Gattis behind the plate again, he could conceivably push this record up to 28 or 29....

In a similar vein, how about some love for Edwin Diaz in Seattle? Over the last month he has seven holds and 29 Ks in just 12.1 innings. In his last eight appearances, covering 7.1 innings, he has allowed two hits with 19 Ks. Those are video game numbers, yet he is unowned in 90% of CBS leagues. If your league values holds or (like me) you are trying to manage innings against a hard limit, numbers like his are invaluable.

I'm a little perplexed how John Jaso was available for such a low bid, he's a high OBP guy on the strong side of a platoon batting lead off in a top-5 offense. Even in my home league, a deep mixer that counts OBP, he went undrafted and has been picked up and dropped to waivers twice. Maybe he's one of those players who is more valuable in real life than fantasy?

Even if Collins didn't want to use him in high leverage situations, why not have him throw two innings of mop-up with a 6-run lead in Game 3? If you cannot trust a pitcher in that situation, he really has no business being on your roster in the first place.

My only point in asking was because it wasn't addressed in the article, yet it stood out to me as the worst decision Collins made in the game. The phrasing was merely an attempt to sound clever, no sarcasm or disparagement intended.

Any merit to the thought that the Mets could shift Conforto to DH, Cespedes to LF, and start Lagares in CF? Lagares had a couple of very good at bats last night, to me any drop in offense replacing Johnson with him would be more than offset by the improved defense.

Two quibbles with an otherwise excellent write-up: First, Duda was clearly bunting for a hit against the shift, it went into the books as a sacrifice but that was not his intention nor Collins' decision to simply move the runner over in that spot. Second, the Cubs have had the lead-off man on base twice in this series, once via a walk and once via HBP. What they have failed to do is get a base hit (0-25).

What made Altuve's base hit even more impressive is that he hit that pitch about eight feet inside the left field line. Show 100 readers the screenshot above and ask them to guess to which field that ball was hit and I'd wager 98 of them would say it went to right.

A decision by MLB to reverse their position on the delivery wouldn't be "arbitrary", it would be based on a full year of data showing that it provides an dramatically unfair competitive advantage. The horse isn't so far out of the barn that it cannot be corralled back in. What MLB can't do is wait until a bunch of copycat guys who were otherwise destined for middle relief start striking out two out of every three batters they face.

I waived Boxberger in a deep holds league yesterday, his general ineffectiveness and usage pattern the last two weeks make me think there is more to the "triceps tightness" than the team is letting on. I have to admit I'm surprised to hear the Astros are in the market for a closer. Back at the trade deadline I remember hearing Qualls name a lot as a target for teams needing help in the back end of the bullpen, and the team was vocal about not letting him go. I know he's signed to an insanely team-friendly contract, but if the plan was to go out and buy a big-time closer for 2015, wouldn't they have been much better served dealing him at his peak value back in August?

So the Mets looked at last year's Chris Young signing and thought to themselves, "Gee, that worked out so well, let's do it again this year, except let's sign the guy two weeks earlier, for twice as many years, and for three times the money, and let's forfeit our first round draft pick to do it." That's tremendous hustle right there.

I had one roster spot to use for a speculative play on a closer-in-waiting, and I ended up using it for Josh Fields over Ken Giles. My gut feeling was that Chad Qualls was more likely to be dealt at the deadline than Papelbon, and like Giles, Fields would return some decent value in Ks and ratios for the ten days leading up to the deadline. I'd love to know who others would choose given the choices, or if neither of the above, who would be behind Door #3.

This worked better before Carlos Gonzales and Michael Cuddyer went town, but in my league guys loved to pick up Drew Stubbs or Corey Dickerson for Rockies homestands, then toss them away when the team went on the road. I went with J. A. Happ in a very deep league with few streaming options. He seems to have found a couple of extra miles per hour on his fastball, which is a good thing... except he's not missing any bats with it, with a contact rate near 90%, which is not a good thing. His match-ups seemed favorable as well; the Orioles offense has been mediocre at best at home, and the Twins are the Twins. How terrible a call was this if all I need is a couple of cheap Ws?
