Bill, I believe that you left out a key word between "Because" and "wins" ... Team. Team wins are what count. Pitcher wins are just an arbitrarily defined stat that in 2013 i would hope would rank behind several other metrics in measuring a pitcher's success. A Jack Morris-esque 7 8 5 5 3 6, 8-5 win is not "successful" pitching unless success is just simplified to "just allow < the other guy." Any GM who defines pitching success in such simple terms is doomed to make the next Wayne Garland free agent signing mistake. Scherzer's 11-0 makes for a nice story (sad but true) but all it really says is that there were 11 occasions that he pitched at least 5 innings, left with a lead, and the team didn't relinquish it. The bar for starting an ASG should be higher than that.
Whither Jemile Weeks if Grant Green is playing 2nd at Sac?
Appreciate the article and no offense to BZ, but can we give a shout out to Tony Phillups who was similarly effective as a super utility stater in the 80s
Aren't borderline pitches pitcher's pitches? When ahead in the count hitters should be shrinking their strike zone unless you're a Vlad Guerrero. Take, until you get something you can rake- especially when ahead in the count
One Transaction Analysis for old times sake?
The last Front Office comment regarding McGwire is spot on. The Cardinals to a man were the anti-hacktastics from Matt Holiday all the way to Daniel Descalso/Pete Kozma--Pete Kozma??!!! Hey Dee Gordon, listen up! Hanley, listen up!
Brett Jackson --> Corey Patterson 3.0? (Felix Pie was 2.0)
It really frustrates me to see comments like the one on Kolten Wong. To suggest he's just going to waltz into the Cardinals lineup -- snap-snap -- by Mid 2013 is ludricous. It's totally dismissive of minor leagues vs major leagues and that's not to say I'm a card-carrying cheerleader for the Proven Veteran. Look, if the Cardinals were the Cubs, I'd say it's plausible. But the Cardinals aren't the Cubs, or any other team in the rebuilding portion of the Success Cycle. They are the current champions with the potential to repeat. Descalso has been a solid contributor (2011 as a Utility guy) and now as the starting 2B building a local cult following due to his playoff hitting and solid glove work. No matter how much prospect sheen Wong carries, the Cardinal Way won't won't allow him to simply push the incumbents aside 3 months into next season unless they're out of the pennant race.
Salvomania is exactly right. Matheny drives me nuts with his bunts--not to mention what he probably does to underrated hitting coach McGwire. Particularly the first inning bunts. I thought Gene Mauch ball was long past. A recent game had Jay lead off with a double and BELTRAN bunting against Ricky "Cy" Nolasco. Jay eventually scored as a result of a 2-out hit (he'd have scored from 2nd). He's had Molina bunting this year which is ridiculous given the hitter he's evolved into over the last couple of years. Molina has even bunted on his own. "Yo Mike, save the bunting for the 239/293/344 hitters, you know, the ones who hit like you did."
Interesting to see the reference to Torre right after Tomterp's reference to Acta's calm demeanor. Torre embodied the calm, confident, always-in-control of his emotions skipper. Which of course is an asset when you're winning but gets associated with "failed to inspire passion" when you don't
Nice job Bradley. The bar is set high but I trust you're up to the task. Like the idea of adding prospects who are in the show. Not sure where to draw the line but definitely support.
Congrats KG and best of luck. I am now an Astros watcher
Kevin, have there ever been studies on "running too much" Is there some point where the energy exerted could potentially impact Hamilton at the plate? Might a 20% reduction in attempts lead to increased ISO? Sounds nitpicky but i'd love to know if there's anymore "there" at the plate for Billy
Betemit has hijacked this chat so i'll stay with the theme. I've seen reports that he's going to the bench but a 304/357/508 vs RHP and a smart manager tell me that he'll be the long half of a platoon somewhere. 4.5 games out of 1st and in the wild card sweepstakes, they're gonna play the Rook full time for the remainder of the year? I'll believe it when I see it.
I was thinking of the Cameron comp also--minus the Cameron like glove.
So "it is what it is, everyone just shut up and accept it." Great. Accept the new norm no matter how many opportunities exist to improve the product--there's too much of that going on nowadays.
ditto Softy's comments. Can you do this for Chris Davis?Travis Snider--when (if?) he gets back to Toronto.
This is just Dusty being Dusty. I'm certain Dusty blessed the Ludwick acquisition and as soon as it happened, Heisey was destined to be hosed. Given my anti-dustiness, I'm rooting for: Reds struggle for the first 2 months of the year, Dusty get canned, and Jocketty reaches out to an old friend...T-L-R. Wouldn't THAT make for some NL Central drama?
A career 955 OPS. Current Gold Glove defense. Not a base clogger (to use his manager's vernacular). Votto NOT a superstar?
Amen to that cfinberg. And those Yankee contacts are as objective an audience on AJ as you can get.
Curious as to why McCarver was the reason the game was the last for Buck at CBS sports. Appreciate the game analysis--I initially thought you were simply checking the box marked "you had to see him play" for benefit of the Old Schoolers (and I'm old BTW). No, Morris does not belong and I do believe his accelerated ascendancy is Old School backlash from Blyleven's election. The only thing missing in the Morris narrative is "fear" which might be forthcoming given his moustache and intensity. The Jim Rice of pitchers--just say NO!
C'mon man. Major American sports teams being referred to as "World Champion" is as American as apple pie. I know what you mean in a literal sense but America IS #1 as a nation, and our basketball, football, and baseball team champions are World champions. And who cares what the Chunichi Dragons or the Liechtenstein badminton champions refer to themselves as. And if that makes me an "ugly, arrogant" American, I'll proudly admit guilt.
Is Vitters now a FIRST-baseman
Where's the bidding start on Lee? Given the pressure the Yankees will have on them to sign Lee--especially if they lose this series and even worse if they lose a game 7 to another Lee masterpiece--might he be able to write his own check? The Yanks will have to sign him. And possibly sticking it to the Phillies in the WS? Wow, what potential storylines.
Cruz' play was both boneheaded and selfish and I can't believe no one else saw it that way. He lollygagged his way into 2nd. Then, knowing he should have been on 3rd decides to put himself ahead of the team to make up for his lack of hustle. A DECENT throw and he's out. And you better believe he'd have been excoriated for making that last out at 3rd. I guess the end justifies the means but to not hear the TBS "experts" discuss the risk/reward of stealing 3rd with 2 outs and the potential inspiration (making up for not hustling) for taking that risk was disappointing.
Yawn...yet another BP "article" questioning whether or not Mauer will remain behind the plate. In the past, were told of the injury risk and how catching could impede his offensive development. Not saying back then that is was wrong to speculate but can't we bury this now? This guy could go down as the greatest catcher in history and this is what we talk about. Hey Mike Piazza, give us your take. BTW, I'm happy to see no recent "Jesus Montero will have to switch positions."
I'm reminded of the movie "Lean on Me" with Morgan Freeman as high school principal "Crazy" Joe Clark. Most of us know the story. The controversial Clark gets ousted from his school, tossed into jail. His kids are told this is a good thing for them, that they'll be better served by a new principal. The kids reject that idea. They want only one thing, one action. They "want Mr Clark."
While I know it's time to turn the page and I'm not going to cancel my subscription yet, I'm really just numb to any and all ideas proposed above. Because the one thing, the one action I want taken by BP, is the return of Joe Sheehan. "I want Mr Sheehan!" "I want Mr Sheehan!"
Yankee fans, what's this trade due to Hughes? Is he now doomed to 8th inning relief until Mariano hangs it up?
My sentiments exactly--always wondered what these events were like. It was near nirvana being around so many similarly thinking baseball nerds. The word hero is overused so I'll just say that as a kid, I looked up to Mays, McCovey, Bonds (daddy), and Marichal; but as an adult, those names are James, Sheehan, Kahrl, Goldstein, Carroll et al. Thanks guys.
Hallelujah--BP finally in the Loo!
Amen to the Butterscotch Krimpets dcj207. I\'m currently in the St Louis area and trying to explain to the natives that Tastykakes are NOT Hostess clones!
Totally agree Mongrel. Hearty congrats but please BP, PLEASE don\'t turn into Hal Bodleys
Yikes, High Subscription Price? Sorry to differ but...well, I\'ll just say I more than get my $$$ worth here.
You\'d think that with Bill James\' association with the Red Sox, Joe C would via osmosis, become \"more\" than just another mainstream media type. Morneau? Please. Haven\'t we seen that movie before. Value is pretty simple--knowing what you know about the season each player has had, if you put them all in a pool and started picking players for a team, who would you pick first. While Mauer might not be picked first, only a moron would pick Morneau over Mauer. It\'s called Positional Scarcity and each media type should attend a seminar on it.
