I have watched ,learned and pondered Faria over the last three years and believe there is a 3SP in there somewhere.
I hope Triston isn't up this year ,if the wind blows in off Lake Eerie it will blow him over the stand !
Everyone should "Stand" for Musial.
If <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70399">Francisco Lindor</a></span> was my doctor, I'd drink to that!!,such a funny essay , well done chaps.
My take from day 2 was how hard it seemed to be, to extricate Cleveland batters, even at 5-1 down there was no panic, they all took their pitches took their walks and eventually ground Texas down. The team mantra seems to be use up the oppositions starting pitcher and we'll beat them late,as our bullpen is better than their's. When Brantley knocks the rust off and Kipnis returns, everyone else better watch out.Colour me impressed.
With a injury free season will <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=104794">Monte Harrison</a></span> make this list next year?
Alexander Dreymon can play Weaver:)
Maybe they do a movie about them "Major League2"
The dog days of summer in a treehouse with Vin Scully on the radio, they WERE the days.
I should have added if he is comfortable playing first, his bat will flourish and he is easily double digit value.
Brett ,I really think you should move Gurriel to utility or corner infield ,I think he will be more valuable than either.
That's 10 years of arm futility Craig, not 5.
Ben I have a question sir. The next two years in a deep dynasty league , who do you want, <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70547">Jacob Faria</a></span> or <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=48674">Clayton Richard</a></span> ?
Ahhh dynasty lists with Bret , I expect too see Zach Collins near the summit, if not highest on this list :)
Great article and bang on with <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=103726">Yandy Diaz</a></span>, though I can't see him displacing Ramirez, he will be a very useful tool for the Indians this season.
If Braun had fell to you in the 3rd would you have taken a pitcher in the 4th,or still taken Hamilton ?
<span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=59915">Rymer Liriano</a></span> is an intriguing post-hype player, who could eke out some meaningful at bats for the sox this year.
Alas I was in the same scenario, I could have traded Lamb for <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Jose+Ramirez">Jose Ramirez</a></span> last summer but held on to the wolf in sheep's clothing , only too find he was cutlets with a side order of mint sauce.
Tough loss for the Owls tonight mate, could have far reaching reprecussions if they lose Forestieri in the window, due to the defeat.
<span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70633">Addison Russell</a></span> will drive the Cubs to the world series this time.Their opponents, the Indians, again. the result seven games, again. The outcome, Who knows ?
I think you are both glass half empty types, Susac will save you from the darkness :)
Fantasy catcher strategy this year... Find one with a job and move on!
I would rather have the Bounty, yummm Coconut!!
Pleasantly surprised to see him up this month, but can't wait too see that swing in his 15 ? at bats or so
This will make for some fun drafts and much head scratching, if they make it to the bigs,in fantasy.
Kate your offer for Lucroy was really good, but I feel the play for <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Will+Smith">Will Smith</a></span> is more intruiging, would you believe a Bradley or Sheffield plus Allen could nab Smith?
I feel I need to add to your article that Cleveland also have some of the best coaches in the game, Many teams look on with envy as Tito, Mickey, Sandy , Ty, Brad and Mike do their thing, which is irreplaceable.
As always another great list Bret, but with your scornful approach to catchers duly noted, how far down a top 101 is <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Francisco+Mejia">Francisco Mejia</a></span> a world away from contributing still, but excitement levels rising, sir ?
Sorry , me again ,surely there was room on this draft board for Riley Half-Pint.with extra witticism of course.
I thought Blair Henley was a regatta for men with oars ??
You really should have the "download here" button before the itinery as it's a spoiler alert, sort of, any the who, thanks for this, it sustains life:)
Just to say, how have I missed these ,as I listen to almost all the podcasts you produce , Oh well never the never.
Woo Hooo !! Will go back and listen to these episodes right now ,Thanks Ben :)
Just need some Decemberists now, to make my world!!
Flogging Molly!!!!!!! yes :)
A truly insightful piece, well done Sam, Hopefully Vince will match your stardom one day.
Only <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/author/brendan_gawlowski">Brendan Gawlowski</a> and <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/author/dustin_palmateer">Dustin Palmateer</a> know what they're talking about on this site any more, and though it took me 10 minutes to spell Brendon's surname, it was all good in the end. Go Tribe!! :)
I love the bullish rankings of Russell and particularly Piscotty, I personally would rank him way above Grichuk every day of the week and twice on Sunday.:)
Would just like to know how many death threats you have received ,via twitter, from irate from Royal's fan's, you may have received, Rob ;0
Absolutely adore your pitching staff George , your top six are electric, and the bottom three will earn , in my opinion.I also think Russell, Valencia, Rodriguez and Forsythe are sure too outplay their prices. All in all a team I would be over the moon to have in any re-draft league, well done sir.
As a footnote , do you own this team in any of your league's?
Winter is coming like a whitewalker thrill a minute, stab him in the back with shard of ice , or is it leaving like a maypole with morris dancers flitting like butterflies on a warm May evening ?
Hey Meg, they are very young and VERY good for the most part, and I have a betting slip at 16/1 that say's they will win the world series in 2016, and start a dynasty, far from New York, for the next five years or so :)
Bret, love your list, and at this time of year it's exciting to see a pitcher we as a bretheren, have had in mothballs for 2 to 3 years come to the fore, but I have to take umbrage with the ranking of <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70306">Sonny Gray</a></span>.If he is the 21st best hurler in all of baseball for the next 5 years ,I'll eat your hat.
I think you have issues with ginger discrimination, Mr Wellemeyer (shame on you). Clint will be the better player all day long , being an Indian (No bias here), Go Indians!! :)
Love your first 4 picks gents, but not enamoured with the meat of the order, or your next 3 at least. IMHO
That's fair, but I feel Zimmer, in particular maybe there sooner, but thanks for the reply.
Where are my two Indians, if Benintendi is here surely at least one of them should be too.
Hey Ben, I have held on to Rymer. coming on 5 seasons now. I thought when I drafted him in my dynasty league, he IS the next Andrew McCutcheon, but his year out through injury seems to have taken a large toll on what he was, still hopeful but more the next <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=52260">David Peralta</a></span> would be realistic these days. sad face.
Please tell a poor Cleveland fan that Brantley would have been in the 4 star tier ( near the top) if he hadn't had Uncle Vanya's back.
Pleasantly surprised at Lonnie's projection here, would take that this season for sure.
I too have my ghast, flabbered at this projection. McCullers will surely pitch more innings than three fifths of that projected rotation, unless injured.
"Can be a 280 guy and hit 20-25 homers as son as 2016" Bret you've made a winter day, positively balmy. :)
Eeks! Both debator's make solid points at different end's of the scale , though I'm leaning toward Mark's view a little.I read this article as a big Dahl believer, and now I wish I had a fence to sit on.Brilliant arguments from both though.Well done:)
Omar was like a butterfly, skittering around the infield, his defence was a thing of beauty, and during his Cleveland days he made a meaningful contribution with his bat and legs, deserves to be mentioned with the above, in my humble opinion :)
I actually have <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70977">Zach Davies</a></span> in a dynasty league (Sad Trombone), also thought he had plenty of upside in my format.( Sad trombone overture). :(
I have to say I'm a little surprised how highly <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=66110">Eugenio Suarez</a></span> is rated on the U25 list,I'llhave to think on this. Thanks for giving me this headache :)
I like Santana for something of a bounceback this year, In the 15th round, helps a lot in this situation, Am I being stupid ?!!
I think Clevenger will rank much ,much higher on this list next year , and reading between the lines feel Chris does too.If he develops like I think he will he should be a top 3 prospect on this list next year and possibly top 75 overall, I think he is that good.
Thumbs up for mentioning the 2016 prodigy's, nice.
<span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=59915">Rymer Liriano</a></span> is the most intruiging name on any of the above lists, from a fantasy standpoint. I do believe he was vying for a number one overall prospect spot before his injury, and probably won't even be drafted in most 10-14 team leagues this spring, a major sleeper as he gets fit again, imho.
Surely a table of relievers throwing -3.00 <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=E" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('E'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">E</span></a>.R.A,+8.00 K/9 and - 2.50 BB/9 would be more useful, to identify the Tolleson's and Davis' of the league. For me the most intriguing among relievers with just a few saves is <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Daniel+Hudson">Daniel Hudson</a></span>.
"Jaffa" is the epitome of what a D.<span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=H" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('H'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">H</span></a> should be. would love to see him steal a base off Lester though.
I am fascinated by <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=68091">Max Kepler</a></span>, and in particular why the twins have moved him to first base, my first inclination is that they have seen a power bat ,that has not been obvious to others, but then you look at who is currently manning first in the big league, and it makes me wonder if the twins don't view the position differently to everyone else, they are such a peculiar organization, go figure.
What percentage of their success is due to going *in house*
rather than getting in a big name. Liverpool fan asking, for a good reason , is it really better to have someone who knows the system come in, or a big name manager ?
I have to say, not being a fantasy baseballer, that I have a gut feeling Lindor will do well in that universe because his hit tool will eventually be an eighty, and he knows how to run the bases.
Good call , but he isn't all that, especially in Toronto, maybe a 4 or 5 starter in Oakland.
Great stuff J.P,
How low could you realistically get Desmond for ? He is at an elite position, and although scuffling, most people who play fantasy have long memories. Would a top 25-50 outfielder snag him, for instance ?
Cheers Craig , very prompt :) Not seen much of Panik , but I would have thought looking at his stats that he was a 10-12 homer guy at best.
Is <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=69564">Joe Panik</a></span> a legit top 10 second baseman going forward, barring major injury of course , or is this half year an outlier ?
Ben I sentementalise (Is that a word ? ) right with you, Rymer is No1 for me too, If only he hadn't missed that season , he would be gold bullion right now.
Have a feeling <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=100574">Jose Berrios</a></span> has pitched his last game at AA,and there's a fifty/ fifty chance his next start is at Target field. IMHO
Gonna presume No: 125 has a ++ cutter :)
I can't believe the O's wont take another fireballing arm to ruin, sacrilege.(:
When all is said and done, "Chi Chi" is going to be a No1 /2 pitcher in fantasy baseball and that is something to covet!!
" Al Capone" leading off for the tribe , a great player and a doppelganger for Stephen Graham who plays Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire, and was brought up about a mile from myself in Kirkby, Liverpool. A certain symmetry, as I once lived in Cleveland, just thought I would share by the by:)
Will there be a call-up page for "Chi-Chi" ? Been waiting a long time for this debut, hope it goes swimmingly :)
Nice K-rate, but seems to have some control issues looking at his BB-9 rate, seems interesting though, no one at BP has had eyes on him according to his player page.Maybe this could be rectified soon?
When I first arrived on American shores, it was Rickey who drew me to the greatest of games in the early 80's. I was only in America for 3 years ,but I witnessed live Rickey stealing 6 bases in 2 games against my Indians, boy that guy knew how to steal a base with aplomb.
Correct me if I'm wrong , but I do believe he is employed by the A'S in some capacity. I'm sure I've seen Rickey on their bench this year.
Watching the Blue Jays- Angels game and boy they are two poor bullpens! Can't see either making the playoffs on this evidence.
I would go McCullers from a standpoint of depth, He hasn't got Roark or Trienan waiting in the wings.
How long before <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=48219">Jake McGee</a></span> takes the closer role in Tampa, a day , a week or a month ?
Not on topic,
It was so interesting through ALL these Gif's to see the influence Soto had on the young hurler, from behind the plate ,I would be extremely surprised if Soto doesn't catch for Rodon throughout his stay in the bigs, for this season.
For years and years Kent county cricket ground (a first class cricket team) had a hundred and fifty year old Oak tree growing in the outfield, If a batsman hit it with the ball he would score a six -, even if the ball travelled along the ground.
Sadly, (sigh) as a Rangers fan I can categorically say this will not last, and said pitcher will drop below the Wandy line ( to coin a phrase :), ) before the next moon is full. :(
That Walker-Mercer play will be the web gem on Baseball Tonight for quite some time , me thinks.
Going to do your update Bret :) Swihart's up at last, Seager upto AAA and just as a footnote let's hope Kris Medlan stay's sound because he could have been a good'un.
Some people really need to read the header!!
Bret, Am I drinking loopy juice or does <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=50118">Zach McAllister</a></span> feel like a Calloway special, he has been throwing a 97 m.p.h fastball in spring training and has looked every inch the accomplished pitcher so far,I know spring stats mean diddly-squat, but he just seems better,a chance for a bit of magic from magic Mickey looks on the cards in my opinion.
I know this is a little late, and probably not very interesting either, but for arguments sake if the Boston brass were to announce that <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=70758">Matt Barnes</a></span> would be solely concentrating on being a reliever ,where would he sit on this list ?
I feel the O'S have no idea how to use or handle any decent pitcher they have, as Arrieta, Hammel,Matusz,Bundy and to a lesser extent <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=101993">Hunter Harvey</a></span>, with his injury, proves. I am not at all surprised with whatever they do with Gausman.
If Mejia is only 5 feet 10" , how big was the batter at 2:02 in the video!?!?
Tapia, along with Dahl already have a 65 hit tool, as of top ten prospect lists, so give them a minute to get better boys :)
Love the Cashner pick at $11, that will definitely make money, and Syndergaard and Russell for $2 between them could be boom time come July, like the team much, definite top five with a lot of upside for more.
Sorry to read your last sentence in the Norris paragraph, J.P (really sad face) have had him stashed in a 24 team dynasty for 2 years. Sell high if he makes the rotation ?
Really sad about Hellickson (snigger, snigger.) that really was sad (snigger, snigger.)
Hey Nick just wanted to say I own 3 of the above in my A.L only league and I'm happy to have them. :):):)
Maybe you and Craig are the new professor and other Goldstein, in a brand new prospect podcast, you could call it the Red Sock and the smelly sock. hey got a ring to it :)
Well, for me you're pieces on the prospects (fantasy wise ) have been very insightful, and whether a promotion or not your skills will be best utilized in the position your about to undertake.
Is that a promotion for you then Craig ? Fully deserved if so. And no, no one can blame you, after this , though very professionaly done. You put that buffoon Carsley to shame :)
Even that seems like to much work for the reliever position, Ben.
Who is going to write the Kluber column then ? Would be one of the most interesting read's this off-season
Could'nt agree more Wilson,I believe Cashner was an ESPN sleeper a couple of years ago, being a Friar, and the hype got out of hand,I would definitely take Quintana, Santana and McCarthy over him in any league.
Jesse Hahn bowls a "Doosra", good to know :)
Hey !! Where is my pitching ace, Jeremy Guthrie, you must have overlooked him in the Matt Cain tier Bret, shame on you :)
With Tito and Mickey in place(still the best pitching coach,in my book)Chris Antonetti and the team he has put together, and most importantly ,the Dolans, on board as owners, I think the Tribe will win a World Series in the next three years, and feel confident in his assumption, as they are so well run from top to bottom.
Liriano at 50 seems a very nice pick to me , there , nice work Ben.
Matzek with a 5.54 E.R.A boo hoo ! lightly brushes a tear from cheek :(
Tulo with 520 plate appereances WOO HOO ! :)
Love this stuff as much as I love my bed teddy, but am a little flummoxed as to why Lindor does not get an at bat on the Indians page , surely his time will come this season, or does PECOTA think Ramirez will hold him back another year ?
Well we both know you were shouted down by lesser fantasy mortals, and in 2016 when you are doing these, if you haven't moved on to bigger and better things, Arenado will be in a tier on his own, either the how did we miss him tier or the what the f%$k happened to him! tier. I personally think the former , though. :)
Love these three year projections J.P, but I have to take you to task over Nolan Arenado, I believe he will be comparable to, Beltre in his pomp, either this year or next and therefore should be top three on this list :)
Mondesi has an eighty (Hollywood) smile, for what it's worth.
I think Chisenhall will be playable this year, for what it's worth.
And my name is not Earnest :)
your welcome :)
I see your point in having Donaldson as the best value pick in any tier ,at third base , because he doesn't get the credit he deserves, but I also see a scenario where Arenado outperforms him this year.I just think Nolan is a monster in the making, but I could also be a year too early, but the two are the 3b's to concentrate on for this season
The Sandwich Prospectus piece was like watching Blackadder without the visuals, well done gents, you made me laugh out loud :)
The Sandwich prospectus piece was belly laugh good gents, cheers. :):)
How come 13 is at 13 , should be number 1 for any discerning fantasy baseballer (as someone else would say). Value is everything !!!
Cliff Lee has gone !! How the years have flown, hope my Indians has someone to replace him...Kluber, who the f%$£* is he. What Tito is manager ?.....
Anyone who knows what a tautology is, knows Craij is destined for greatness. True. :)
In the pan , I should have said, goddamit :)
Thank you for the prompt reply Craig, much appreciated.
Craij need some input fella, normally wouldn't ask as I know my own mind, but this one is kicking my ass, let me elaborate. It's a 16 team keeper and we keep ten, format is 7x7, categories are: R,HR,BB,SB,OBP,SLG. and the pitching,H,ER,BB,QS,ERA,K/9 and SV?HLD. Have made my decision to keep in order:-
therefore my debate on the face of it seems quite easy, pick two from these four,
I would be grateful for your thoughts here, as the deeper I look the cloudier it gets, cheers.
His stock is gonna rise come Feb 17
Dale have noticed a few of your comments regarding Scherzer over the last couple of days, being an Indians fan and speaking from vast experience, ie: Sabbathia, Lee, Colon et al, I can tell you time is a great healer, well not really, come here and I'll give you a hug :).
Yes, September stats are indeed very volatile , and I should have made it clearer in my comment , that having watched him in June when he first started to the four September games he played , there was a noticeable difference to the stuff he was offering to hitter's and if he takes that forward he could be a legitimate bargain at the back end of a draft.
Been rummaging around looking for a true sleeper for 2015, and though fraught with danger, due to his home park, if you look at last September's stats for this young post hype pitcher, notably a 1.39 E.R.A and 1.19 Whip, he may be getting the hang of things, the guy is Tyler Matzek
Love everything you do,Gents, you have me hooked, more than Cistulli and Cameron these days. Miller must have gone to Princeton, and Lindbergh is just a sponge, in the nicest way , but is so learned.
Let's see how it falls gentlemen, shall we,I may be wrong ,but he is not a top ten catcher on any player rater this year, just my opinion, based on nothing but gut feel.
Don't rate Mesoraco at all, won't draft him in any league, and think he is the biggest bust among catchers this year in a fantasy format, sorry Nick just don't see it.
Have to say, fantasy gentlemen, you have killed the catcher category for drafts , with 9 columns and two podcasts on a meh position (for fantasy), you have outdone yourselves. Going to be pitcher framing in my sleep for the next week !!Kudos to you all for this ,and I really, really can't wait for the week on swingmen :)
Doug, nice write up on Gray,I was wondering how Butler's mechanics grade in comparison, have you had a chance to analyse him at all?
Owning both Susac and Jose Quintana in a dynasty league would it not be all kinds of wonderful to see them flip,Susac at "the cell" and Quintana in San Fran just makes too much sense though, but I will continue to dream :)
Real nice column Craig.
Great graphics Mau,the bee's knees for instant study. I think come next year that Yan Gomes web will stretch a little further, has he still has a smidgen of upside that can be dragged out, being he is Brazilian , and not brought up in a baseball environment, just saying :)
I think the Nationals fared well in this deal, very well in fact . what do you think in the National's boots.
Will Giolito be considered for the number one in the top 101, even with the risks afforded him, after what I have read up to now in the top ten's out so far, he is by far and away the most exciting player in the minor's ?
So the circle remains unbroken :)
Mat Latos to the Marlins is a big ^ in his fantasy value I would think.
Latos has to gain two fantasy ^^ for this move to the cavernous Marlin's park, and I think he is a Floridian too, is he not ?
This was a no brainer for Epstein, The guy never wanted to leave, was very usable when with the Cubs and has a team friendly deal, but these are the deal's that usually don't get done and we all scratch our heads ,as to why, so kudos to Theo and his staff.
An awful lot of analysis for a meeh type of deal Sam,you are working too hard my man, take it easy and roll it out , it's the off season. nice stuff though.
I feel you are being a little unfair to Matzek, who is clearly the class of that rotation, and who is still young with a smidgen of untapped potential. Anyway I'm holding onto him as one of my 24 keepers in a dynasty league, what's the worst that could happen. don't answer that! :)
I'M so sorry, simply forgot, please delete the above comment.
Table 6 is the most interesting for me, looking for value next season, but the only player I would be ultra optimistic about on that list is Goldschmidt, the rest are iffy at least !
Does Oscar's value not take a knock here too ?
Dan , I was loving the rumour roundup until we reached Iwakuma, then you fell into the web of the gutter press, come on Dan don't go the way of the tabloid's :)
A good start to the Met's off-season, will need more, but certainly a decent start.
Not Timber, ColKiner
What he said^
I still think the Cubs are a year away from being in the playoffs, but it makes sense to get the manager in early to get in the comfort zone with his players and vice versa
Fredi's wobbly chair is about to tip over, me thinks.
Not expecting him to be elite Ben, but at $3 dollars or less, and with the caveat of more playing time Susac could be projected at 270+ points in a H2H points league for next year, if nothing else he's the first sleeper we have for 2015 :) Thanks for the column by the way, very interesting.
With Santana no longer eligible at catcher next season, there are only two elite catcher's left on the books in points leagues, Posey and Lucroy, it's possible that Mesoraco may join them next year but the catcher to keep a close eye on for fantasy purposes, for me is Andrew Susac of the Giants, he has some nice pop in his bat,and isn't the worse defender at the position, by any means. With first base looking iffy in San Fran, maybe Posey features ther a lot more next year.
Quintana is SO under the radar , due to wins (yuck), and will be again next year.I read something recently that said that the only two pitchers that the White Sox would not consider trading where Sale and Quintana at any price. His QS in a hitters park is outstanding, enough said.
Don't start hustling now ,Ben. Many thanks for your Deep Impact thoughts mate, see you in the spring.
Or maybe October ! :)
Great stuff Jeff , see you in the spring ! :(
Nice column Mike ! Get to keep Robbie Grossman for $3 next year , but feel that is his ceiling in a 16 team AL only league. do you have any thoughts ? yours AL only head scratcher :)
I know high school is high school, so to speak, but there has not been any mention of a lot of swing and miss in any Frazier prospect reports at that level, that I have read.Should we be concerned or is this just a learning curve ? Doing a great job , by the way , Jeff.
Looking forward to a new era of the greatest prospect write up's on the Interweb or in print, and the team that is left still shows 80 grade #dazzle.
Very nice write-up Craig, Liriano took his first walk tonight too ;)
So Judge is a good judge.
Just wondering if a call up piece on Rymer Liriano is due to be submitted, as he will be gaining plenty of playing time over the next few weeks, and is a very interesting prospect after his injury. Cheers.
Pow !!Angels and the rest of the A.L
Cahill's back !!! My hacking mass team has it's ACE back for the big push :)
I heard Jorge Alfaro put on a masterclass at batting practice at the future's game, who would be a comparable player Piazza or Molina ? Cheers.
Cory Snyder , boy when he hit one it stayed hit, sounded like cannon fire when he got one right , much like I imagine it would sound when Stanton or Jose Abreu catch one right. Memories :)
Yup, up today Luhnow made me look like a male member. haha
Does'nt look like Santana arrives until September, he is still striking out a lot !!
Last night's debacle was pretty scary.
Professor Parks knows who the best player to put on a catcher's mit in the last 20 years is,and it isn't Swihart.
He will be better than a fourth starter , I see a third starter as a floor , and a Dan Haren type low whip and 6.5 k's per 9 as a ceiling . Thanks for the swift reply though.
I like your lists gentlemen, I do ,I do,but as with all things listed as preference's you are open to question....so where the heck is Tim Cooney ,I bet a slab of beef he will be in the top ten of both your lists next year.so there !! :}
Mauricio Sir , can you impart any knowledge on Chen Chang Lee, as a future closer/ setup man.Is he viewed as a closer in the future by the Indians ? Does he have stuff ? Just picked him up in two dynasty leagues ,due to a vague recollection that the guy will be a closer somewhere someday, enlighten me please.
Love the calls on Lobaton and Abreu , Paul. Jose is going to have a monster day soon, hopefully today and dumpster diving at catcher is my favourite pastime.
With Papelbon's documented velocity issues would you go over/under 22 saves for him the rest of the way ? Cheers Latin Spice :)
The "Golden Age" of the shortstop is at hand, bring it on !!
Ah ha Villar just got his first :)
Excellent stuff Wilson.
Would never trade a player in a team I have drafted before June 1 apart from injury need, have to believe your right
until the evidence is compelling.
Cheers C.D top stand in :)
I sit not too early to call Choice the thin end of a platoon or does what he has achieved in the minors count , in your opinion Ben ? p.s I ask this knowing he gave Duffy a ride on Sunday , but also thinking he could be better than a platoon player in the future.
Wilmer Flores has been sent to minors , probably to get some more seasoning at S.S
I don't think even Jason would tell the Infoweb that he has been crying himself to sleep because Jorge Alfaro is merely a role 5 major league regular.
Astros win the world series !!!
Dallas Keuchel wins the A.L Cy Young
Japhet Amador is rookie of the year after coming up in June and hitting 47 moonshots while eating a chicken leg at the plate.
Jonathan Villar wins the triple crown getting his 48th home run in the last week to squeak out Amador, he also steals 81 bases to beat Billy Hamilton by 1.
As an aside,at the G8 summit of October 2014, the worlds major powers decide to spend their defence budgets on flower arranging instead.
Really happy to hear of Jorge's upward curve, I think it would secretly break then Prof's heart if Alfaro doesn't reach at least a role 6 player in the major's.
I love Arcia's projection here, tons of upside.
I agree , Smith could be in the rotation before June to replace either Lohse or Peralta.
Henderson Alvarez will outperform this PECOTA rating by a lot.
How many innings for Yordano now ? 155 maybe ?
Top of the pops rotation if Anibals arm doesn't fall off.
Corey Dickerson 450+ plate appearances barring injury , take it to the bank.
I see a struggle ahead for the Indians and 78 wins seems a tad optimistic,I.M.H.O
One of the best rotation's in the league, and if Cingrani can find a useable third pitch it could become seriously good.
Gavin Floyd when he returns could be pivotal to how the Braves season unfolds.
Andy Burns and Donnie Joseph , that's DEEP!!
Well done Mr. Karaman
Great stuff Mike,
Gray seems to be a very impressive young pitcher. Although I am not high on comps , mechanically does he remind you of anyone past or present ?
Hey Bret ,
How long do you leave a guy before you put a platoon tag on them ? As I have looked at Christian Yelich's splits for last year and he is so lopsided toward right handed pitchers for the season that he screams platoon, but it is a small sample size, would you platoon after one year's stats? Do you look at minor league numbers ? Or is it a wait and see for another year ? Thanks.
By the way, using Michael Brantley or David Dejesus as the thick end of these super platoons $3 for the lot :)
Love these stats Bret.
I have another who I have drafted as part of a super platoon in a couple of points leagues ,Justin Ruggiano (career vs Righties .249.308.393 vs Lefties .256.328.506 with an OPS of .834 ), So although the batting average is similar against both , he seems to hit lefties harder, which is handy to know in a points league.
Just a small point Gregerson is now in Oakland.
Unless the men in cant be got out within four days (first class) or five days (test match), then its a draw. (:
Great stuff again guys !
Really glad to see my boy Vincent Velasquez sneak in at the bottom , but when that breaking ball is developed watch him take off in the "helium balloon" you have been warned :)
Ben have to say I'm a little sad to see Sean Doolittle not get a mention for deep league consideration , where holds count.Otherwise a nice list indeed.
Clint Frazier is a butterfly " The Red Frenchie "
Wilson we are of the same heart,I have also been targeting Cody Allen as a cheap source of potential saves.I would add two more to your list who could be closing six weeks into the season,
Matt Lindstrom White Sox
and Rex Brothers Rockies.
Thanks for the work gents.
When will Matt Latos be given the extra star he deserves, even according to your stats he should be up a level.(:
Love your bold ranking of Latos , definitely the most under-rated stud out there.
Great column Bret,
my one reservation with your rankings (YES only one)would be your ranking of Erik Johnson.I would have had him in the Nate Eovaldi , A.J Griffin bracket , as I think he is a true mid rotation fantasy pitcher in the making.
Great job though.
There was a young pitcher called Erlin
Who in his mind seen a championship flag unfurlin'
The kid knows he'll be good
As everyone else should
But they're too busy watchin Kershaw hurlin'
A Limerick if you please.
Paul, nice article.
Just a thought, this could be the lowest A.D.P we ever see for Justin, would you aim to take him in any re-draft leagues you are in this year, or are you taking a watching brief after to relatively disappointing campaigns ?
On paper this looks like the best futures game seen so far. Can't wait to see Hedges calling the game Yadier style!
Bret,I have just dropped Justin Maxwell from my bench in a 20 team,35 man roster, dynasty team to pick up Hellweg.Alittle scared of his home park, but having watched the great video above,I see plenty of upside.Did I do right?
Jason, a little surprised Anthony Ranaudo did'nt merit a honourable mention. He has been shoving it in Portland,so far this year. What are your thoughts for him, going forward? Thanks.
Hey Zach,glad your back mate,
Quick question, have you seen or heard anything about Anthony Aliotti with the Rockhounds. He seems to be quietly putting together some very impressive numbers on the season so far?
The sooner the Tigers trade Castellanos the better, he needs to be in the big's .But will Detroit really trade him for a closer!?.I feel they would regret that move down the line, don't you ?
I know Chris Archer has some lovely stuff, and you have said he was impressive, but not having watched the game. With only two strike outs was he IMPRESSIVE or just run of the mill, did he have the Wow factor, despite the lack of strikeouts?
Nice piece Jason,as an aside do you think Marcel Ozuna has gained relevancy in 10 team mixed leagues yet? cheers.
What a shame, that such a promising pitcher that was Ricky Romero seems to be on the brink of obscurity,I wish him the very best in his psychological or physical battles in the future, hope you get back in the bigs soon Ricky.
If Masterson comes through his next two starts unscathed, would he be almost an auto-start the rest of the way?
As regards Erasmo Ramirez,I think he will be back 10 days from today for Maurer who is pitching tonight for the big club,just saying :}
Thanks for the reply Zach,I agree with your premise, but think it would be next June/July at the earliest, if everyone stays healthy, and Cabrera should bring in a nice haul, which is much needed down on the farm.
Zach, always look forward to reading your column, fantastic stuff. Your thoughts on Francisco Lindor being shortstop for the Indians next year are intrigueing,I would say he is already a better defensive player than Asdrubal now! but I would think the Indian front office would be loathe to lose Cabrera's offensive play at such an early date,no matter how much Lindor is raking in the low minors, your thoughts?
You've left me in suspense now, Ben, did Rosenthal get the last out after the walk or did Milwaukee score a run with the bases loaded?
Indeed Cy of relief is right, that was close, but that is now 15 times Seattle has been beaten by Cleveland ,in a walk off situation,at home.
Sorry after, getting giddy haha.
I swear he hit his walk off home run before I posted the above comment , Go Yan. :)
Watching Yan Gomes as I type this, he is a catcher to go after in deep leagues,I think he could be around for a very long time, he has plenty of pop, an adequate hit tool and is defensivley sound.Oh and I have owened him in a 20 team dynasty league for the last two years (:.
Hide yo japanese imports, the Tribe is back!!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but was this the first time Michael Brantley has hit in the 3 spot in the majors?
Reading "between the lines" Zach, do you feel Gerrit Cole is bored at Indianapolis and needs to get to the majors soon, to show off his arsenal?
Thanks for the reply Jason , love this concept, thanks to all for the hard work, go get a drink, man.
Jason, this is the first time I've heard Walker and bullpen mentioned together, presumably because of his below average command, do you see him as a Bauer like pitcher who is always going to walk too many?
Haha.Not going anywhere fast.
when you have a chance take Asdrubal out as well, good dog!
Go fetch, boy.
J.P Crawford looked like he was off to Oz in that video, he seems very slight.
Your comment "reeks of handism, sir, please take it back" :) If we southpaws are to be labelled, then so should Northpaws, though my interpretation would be left hander, westpaw, right hander ,eastpaw.Seems to make more sense.
Touche, My bad sorry.
I'm not saying auto start on a regular basis , mate but Cahill has a fine record against the Dodger's, and he gets to take on an aneomic Philly club, albeit at home , where he has had his tribulations
Yup, the teddy bear is one of the most under rated thrower's in fantasy baseball and to only be owned in 74% of ESPN teams is a travesty.
For me Paul, Trevor Cahill has a monster week and should be a must start!!
Cheers for the prompt reply Paul, much appreciated, will go get him now!
Thanks for the great column B.P.F.T.
A short question,in a 20 team dynasty league who would you prefer, short term to cover Maxwell's stint on the D.L at R.F,the only two viable options out there seem to be Marcel Ozuna or Andrew Brown, the rest is a barren wasteland, but both those hitters have shown a little pop, coin toss or is one decidedly better than the other? thanks.
Hhm, though they might be beasts, that should say best. :)
Hey Mike ,
just been offered a trade in a 20 team dynasty league, 23 counting stats, offered Matt Latos for Howard Kendrick and Starling Marte, my two beast pitcher's are Chris Sale and Brett Anderson at the moment though I'm waiting on Cole, Hultzen,Archer and Erlin.Would you pull the trigger?
Jason my friend,
I have been offered a trade in a 20 team dynasty league,Howard Kendrick and Starling Marte for Matt Latos, as my second best pitcher is Brett Anderson I am tempted.
What do you think ?
Is Robbie Erlin coming up to be a long reliever or will he start on Friday? thanks.
Any thoughts ion the Mets new outfielder Jaun Lagares, seems to have been in the Mets system for ages with barely a mention on any prospect lists, is he a quad-A player?
Sam, you should put the gif of Evan Gattis hitting Strasburg with that short arm jab to the fences, that was a thing to behold.
Sam, your revery is as good as anyone's in baseball haha.
Cheers Mark ;) They were my thoughts, just picked Morgan up in my 20 team dynasty league.
Or Cloyd ?
If Pettibone gets lit up, who will be next Martin or Morgan?
Was thinking long term,Zach. Do you think his hit tool may not be good enough for the big's perhaps?
I second the above observation.
As good as anything on this site Zach, saves trawling through Baseball reference well done man, got a question for you.Do you think Angelo Gumbs could play shortstop, as he is going to be blocked at second for a long time, whereas Jeter is not going to last forever, thanks.
Lovely stuff Doug, the only thing I would disagree with is that Gio deserve's an A. He looka so smooth and compact toward the plate. But just nitpicking :)
Per chance, Kazmir will be lights out, this outing, me thinks. :)
Nice one Daniel.
Sorry did'nt read the bracket stuff :)
I thought Brett Myers was starting for the Tribe tonight ???
Would.nt have Polanco or Dobbs cleaning my windows yuck.
Placido batted clean-up, but had nothing to clean, going to be a long season for the fish.
N.Y Yankees vs Boston in the battle of the basement, is one to watch out for too:).
B.P Staff, amateurs !!!! that must be April foolish!!! :)
Jonathan Singleton- Got a little black book with my poems in.
Thats the way to give a pitcher confidence just before opening day haha, no wonder he's a bit peeved.
Nice move getting Rosenthal, Bret and I love Cahill, so underated in fantasy,19th round is a great place to get him. Looking at your two rosters, sorry Paul, but I know which one I would prefer.
Just hit the hyperlink for Brendan McCarthy the tweet half way down by a Mr Liss is laugh out loud, priceless:)
Yeah if you had Cueto, Samardzija and Harvey behind Wainwright, for instance ,I would have been happier with your rotation.
So in your opinion, you expect Sale to have a major injury due to his throwing technique, when is this likely to occur, this year, next, in 5 years, do you think Chris would agree? And at this moment in time it's for you to prove it's not sustainable,I will be satisfied at the end of the season, when he wins a Cy Young.
Sorry Mike but your pitching is'nt good at all, unless Luebke comes back looking like the ace he was before his T.J surgery, but honestly, your rotation really stinks:(.
Seemingly though the torque through his elbow and his release are no worse than Randy Johnson's were, and they are built the same.Sorry I just do'nt think you can intimate an injury due to Sale's mechanics because they're different to most pitchers.
Dominic Brown this season perhaps?
I know Chris Sale.s balance looks ungainly and actually downright awful but if it is repetitive and he is comfortable doing it, how will it catch up with him and be a threat?
If the Twins played in the A.L West, they would finish 6th in my opinion.
Thats disappointment, He going to be H
Thanks fellas, great stuff, being a tribe fan, and having had Jason Kipnis for three years in a dynasty league, I'm trying to get Addison Russell in a trade for him, dissapointment written all over Kipnis I'm afraid.
I for one ,would like to bet on the Eraser being in the rotation within a fortnight of opening day, and the carcass that is Blake Beavan being dragged off to Triple-A
It's a pity about the "Eraser" but I'm sure you will still make more than $4 on him through out the season.
Sorry ,I meant if he hit 24 home runs rather than the projected 19. Does'nt matter, still doing sterling work. thanks
Ok lets play a name game:).Will he hit for the value of Cespedes,Hamilton or Ellsbury or noe of these?
Thanks for the answer Zach, having seen him,do you think he can stick? until Colby is ready, at least.
Great tiers again Mike, and totally agree with your value picks, just one question, if he could turn 10% of his doubles to home runs,as I hope he does, could Alex Gordon ]out hit his current value?
Tepesch sports a very solid BB/9 over his 3 stops in the minors,I feel he would have been a top 15 prospect in a lot of organizations ( but not top 20 in Texas),am I way off? Never the less a bit of a head scratcher that he got the starting gig.
Come on Ben,your in New York, New York. and the JOB is yours :)
Paul, is Hanley droppable in a 12 team mixed with only one D.L spot? thanks.
Old is good Bret,I'm 48 and have'nt had a day off in at least 3 weeks :)
Again ,a nicely put together tier list Bret, thanks. The only question I would have about your summations would be not having Adrian Beltre as your four star value pick, to my mind there is something to be said for safety picks so early in a draft ,and Beltre is almost bombproof here.
Nice list Josh and a lot of sense written concerning Paul Goldschmidt.cheers
Taking Saunders over Trout aint that bad, Saunders could be the best player from Canada one day.(:
Grey strikes again!
To be honest,I think if you dont get Cano 2nd base is pretty much "blagh", I certainly dont like Pedroia or Kinsler where they are going, the third tier stinks, so could probably see myself with either Ackley or Walker late on and fortify my roster with decent shortstops earlier.
A good plan ?
Wonderful piece Jason, to say your "waxing lyrical" would be an injustice. An insightful piece from an insightful mind about the magic of discovering a six. thank you.
Would Yasmani Grandel have been higher without the suspension? I see him being a three star or marginal four star catcher of the future, if his power profile is legitemate.
Yes thats him.
Thanks Paul great stuff, already got Eovaldi and Ogando in a couple of teams, but you missed the best sleeper, "The Eraser" is a no brainer for any dynasty league or deep re-draft, ask Jason :)
What about Reggie Jackson's all star game globicide which fatuered the killing of the innocent score board that got n the way :)
Thanks Jason, great piece, sounds like Tayron Guerrero maybe very exciting in the future.
How far does Teixiera fall on your list ,with the news on his injury ? Personally he would'nt be top 15 for me anymore.
Sorry to keep on about the draft, but as a first year subscriber, will you be posting a draft "big board" or something along those lines , over the next few months ? thanks :)
Cheers Nick, I agree, but both are very toolsy with plenty of "want" :)
I would love my team to trade Chris Perez for Rick Porcello, it would be a great fit for both organizations, but alas it probably would not be likely with them being division opponents, or would it ?
Just wondering if the comment applied to Mike Zunino also applies to Travis d'arnaud.
These rankings are for dynasty leagues which are very rarely less than 16 teams, and usually 20 teams with deep rosters, about 35 players.
On a slight tangent, how early will high schoolers Austin Meadows and Clint Frazier likely to be drafted ? Thanks.
Knowing how aggressive Detroit are with their prospects, could you see Nick Castellanos on the opening day roster ? Or will it depend on the health of Andy Dicks no matter how good Castellanos looks ?
I actually like your pitching more than you do Mike, your rotation is very serviceable and you got some of the best set-up men in the game with McGee, Uehara, Robertson and Coke, over all it looks a very well balanced team.
How old is Gustavo Cabrera ? I know very little about him.
Well done Brandon,
Really nice to see you back again after such a horrific injury.Good luck to you this season :)
It must be fun for Trevor too see his name in such revered company,a real eye opener, going to take him in the 2nd round of aall my fantasy drafts now ! :)
Surely ,room for Lindor in the top 5 next year ?
Could the Cody Ross deal be one of the worst of all time , giving a $26 million three year deal to a 30 year old journeyman, when they arguably have two better players at his position already there in Gerrardo Parra and Adam Eaton, smacks of insanity.
As if by magic , Frenchy makes a great start to his spring campaign with 2 hits, 1 run, 1 R.B.I, oh and an error OOPS!
Great list Jason & Co.
Just one thought ,when reading your top 11 for eachh Org. I came to the conclusion ,Noah Syndergaard and Archie Bradley where the same person, therefore it was gratafying to see them so closely matched on your 101. Do you give the edge to Syndergaard because of likely home park effect, or Parkes effect, see what I did there, going to tke one of these tall flamethrowes in a dynasty league , if you had too which one would you take ? thanks.
Sorry, Jason,I meant first round pick not No"1 pick.
jason, just wondering if you have seen former No"1 pick Josh Fields recently, if so is he truly a bust or is there still a bullpen job for him in Houston. thanks.
Thanks for the column Hudson,
Do you feel Sean Dolittle can find a good enough secondary pitch this year, to be a dominant reliever ?
O.K Thanks Mike.
Nice list Mike,
Just a note on Lance Berkman ,could'nt find him in your list.I have him valued at $4 does this sound about right ?
No wonder Robbie is such a fantasy darling, not only are his counting stats so good, but to miss `1 games in 4 season's is just amazing, compared to Utley, it's like chalk and cheese.
Another great column Ben,thanks.
Being a tribe fan I would find the most disappointing aspect of Cleveland's offseason signing's would be another paltry average attendance, like last season, hopefully no matter how many games we win this season, just for the record I put the under/over at 75.5,bums on seats will rise markedley, and that would then be a great season for the tribe.
