Holy hell, that is hilarious
American League prospects...
Newcomb is on the Braves now, but it's possible that his command has drifted him back to the western coast.
Thanks for this really fun list.
This was fun, thanks
Oh man I'm on my feet, this is really exciting
That's some cold Arizona trolling...
You don't think baseball makes the world better?
This reads bizarrely angry. An a acquisition of Garcia is the time and place for a rant about a terrible stadium deal?
I see it as filling a space in the rotation to appease fans but not hurt payroll in 2018. The options being floated around would have been disastrous. Archer sale or gray? That would have been delusionally thinking the Braves could be competitive in 2017, while sacrificing the #1 or 2 farm in baseball. Better to get older players with contracts that won't hurt 2018. The Braves could have filled those spots with AAA pitchers that weren't and won't be ready, but threw the fans a bone. The price of that is around 20 million. In an ideal world those assets could be flipped but I'm not holding my breath of course.
This seems pretty harmless to me. I'd rather they pocket the 20 million or use it on higher upside arms but most important to me is not affecting next year's budget.
He provided context. No one thinks all stats are completely meaningless.
Wasn't expecting a profile on Naylor with the phrase "won't hurt you"...
Strongly disagree, I love these lists
Does age play into this at all? I honestly don't know the age of all those dudes when they were the fifth best prospect, but doesn't being the fifth best so young affect things, in terms of projected ceilings and floors?
Not a comment on the trade. Okay, I should just look it up.
Hanson: 23 :-(
Trick them into a call up to replace Stras?
I disagree, people would still vote the same way. The Royals' fans are voting to see their players get the most votes, that would still be an appeal to them even if they didn't get to play. Hell, it would probably be extra motivation.
I could read these all day, thanks for them.
I think Pinder's slash line is wrong though, or we are really dumpster diving
It's not a 40 man MLB roster
Did Lueke go to jail? I don't see Bush getting a pass, but he did end up in jail for three years, that is "paying a price" if that's possible. Lueke may have ended up with time served, I don't recall.
Did you read the rest of the paragraph?
I thought lefty junk baller is a good dean description and I voted for him
That's the real takeaway, surely
George probably broke his keyboard racing to type STEVE CISHEK
You guys new here?
Yawn, what a boring week!
I couldn't believe you'd recommend just waiving Clippard, so I looked back... And you didn't. You said wait until Doolittle is back in the ninth. Which is one hundred times more reasonable, so don't be too hard on yourself.
Thanks for the column
So it's early? :-)
Smoltz is a hall of famer to be
Jason heyward does not belong on that list
One hundred Likes
They aren't trying to win this year
Braves can be made fun of for a lot of things (perhaps even the return on this trade!) but trading Kimbrel was an obvious, necessary move at this point. I don't really get the tone of the first few paragraphs.
That said I also don't get the point of signing nick markakis or why the return was so poor on some of the other trades. Braves :-/
A wonderful read
Between Men in Blazers and this article Ross from Friends is taking a real beating lately.
Maybe he should hire a PR firm to try and PIVOT the trend
The something george costanza would eat joke makes up for the Appel joke.
Congrats, this is the dumbest argument I've read on the subject
Are you kidding? That gets brought up all the time. That's like the number one thing McCann is known for now and this site especially brings it up every time he's mentioned.
Fantastic. I watched him a lot last year and my ability told me "something is wrong" but that's where it ended.
I think I'm eligible for third in yahoo leagues
Cy young voters don't and shouldn't care about year to year consistency
Plus, it'd be a pretty small sample size.
196 plate appearances vs. southpaws in 2012
A lack of power is the theme here. Giving up dingers from first base is tough
If he's not in 25, probably not as disappointed as you would have been to see it
And the winner is... Salvador Perez
I think leadership is a complicated issue
BJ Upton isn't viable in a Braves' center fielders only league
What an informative piece, thank you
This trolling is passionless
You tell yourself this is going to happen sooner rather than later, and to brace yourself, but it still does sting. Bittersweet though, and I'm going to try and focus on the sweet: Congratulations.
I'm late to this, but this was great to read, and brought back a lot of wonderful memories. Thanks
I actually thought Kendrick was a fine choice. Thanks for this
Nope! I'd bet it is just a random guess.
I hate thinking this because I love the guy, but Machado acted like a baby all weekend. A bummer to see.
"And Kris Bryant homered" is a lovely sign off
Until he gets hurt
I was a little surprised to see Hosmer so high. Is that me being impatient, or so this upside-related? The lack of power used to be balanced by the steals, but he's abandoned that aspect of his game (maybe).
RIP Ventura :-(
I think that's the new x-men movie
Slightly less than upton? You forgot a 1, or a 2, in front of your ADP
They said 2014
This is fantastic
Um, so I have to play music myself now?
The Atlanta team based rating scared me, but I think it's largely driven by doumit. God willing he doesn't spend much time back there.
Wow I knew the Tigers didn't play defense but three on the list was still shocking
This is great. Do you think Gausman, Bradley, and Ventura jump if they get extended playing time this year, or was that factored in?
That Fernandez ranking is giving me seller's remorse
Huh, I was all set to criticize, because I hated that he went from leadoff to batting ninth. But he kept stealing at the bottom of the order and actually put up better counting categories too. (On a per a/b level anyway, which isn't fake but still it's close which is the point).
Wow montero was worse than I thought even
After a point you get a bunch of guys who do very similar things but with different prices. I guess that's true of a lot of positions but it feels that way most strongly with catcher and third.
1,000 apologies, but did I miss castellano? Is it an eligibility thing? Surely he's better than some of those one star options.
Andrelton? It's not hype anymore, he's done it
Oh, it's Merlin! I was about to say "which side of the Atlantic" but it's Merlin!
As one of the guys that went bonkers over catching, I guess, I felt it was inconsistent and arbitrary. The fact that the fantasy team is apparently still figuring out how to define who goes where in three year rankings justifies that.
I stand by my original opinion that more inclusion is better, with a note saying "some of these years may/probably will be at a different position." And it was and is only an opinion. Nothing to freak out about, or harbor weeks later.
I've never heard of a league where a guy who logged that many games at 2b the previous year wouldn't have eligibility
You gotta expect Morgan to regress into at least some international incident
I think my reasoning is that if your guess about them moving off the position is wrong then the list doesn't matter anymore. Plus, two years of a guy as catcher and one year as 1b has more value than 2 years plus black hole. I dunno maybe I'm missing the point of this, don't worry about it.
Respectfully, I think these tiers would be much more useful if they were ranked as if they would still be catchers, and with a note saying you don't think they will be. Guessing the year someone will no longer catch is just a guess, and it takes people out of the rankings near completely.
Mauer makes sense, but the two year out projections I think do not.
I'm very curious about what Kimbrel could acquire
Very cool, I liked this
I'd be shocked if he costs a 5-7 round pick
Before Rosario was hurt he was like #2. He's going to be that much worse this year to be barely top ten?
Cargo is going to end up drafted in the top eight on average. Barely top 16?
These seem like controversial calls. And that's cool, it's it would be worth not much if people just gave the opinions everyone else had. But they were made without much backup at all, almost as if they were the consensus. Very bizarre.
Haven't listed but my guess is keyboard alt-tabs. A common culprit.
You don't think power is his game? I think that's a fair assessment.
He went on to explain who he is immediately after
No, it's been very bad for most of the season, and only recently above average television.
I don't think you can say no one offered more. By many reports he wasn't really shopped around for others to match
Congrats guys, that's fantastic
Didn't ubaldo burn some bridges in Colorado? And also burn the roads, rivers, and bike paths as well? Then burned the city, and then gathered the ashes and burned the ashes?
He said he was gambling. He didn't say it was unfair or especially unlucky.
"Ok, gotta remember to keep my terms generic, so that no one knows the unidentified scout is me."
"...caddywhompus DAMN IT"
The notion that because verlander was a horrible disappointment, but still an average pitcher, he couldn't have cost you your season is horsecrap. He wouldn't be bad enough to move you from first to last, but from first to second? Absolutely. And as this site stresses over and over, no one cares about second. Verlander cost people titles. People that listened to the "verlander will be FINE" talk missed out on titles.
He was talking NL-only
City council meeting spoiler!
Well that's not true
What a wonderful article. Thank you for this
That is damning
IMHO if the guy gets hurt after it was proposed but before you click Accept that is shady. Don't do that. If they are hurt after the fact, or both teams knew a guy was hurt and it turned out worse than was thought, that's life.
So, pay for saves, just don't pay a ton for saves. That makes sense to me. These articles usually seem to make it look like getting these undrafted saves is easy. It's not. Bell, Mujica, and Henderson have been great (until injury) but no one walked away with all three unless the league was asleep. And for every one of them there are two Tazawas, Peraltas, Pestanos, Boggs, Benoits, and Hernandez'.
Speculating on saves takes up roster spots and FAB. I try to pay for mid tier closers and get lucky after injury and poor performance. I feel like this kind of article oversimplifies the process. When Berry yells don't pay for saves he's always taking credit for each of the success stories, when he really only had a one in ten/twelve chance of landing each. You could easily not pay for saves and not have any saves. It's a strategy that is more of a sound byte.
You might just be reading that a teence too literally
The super 2 deadline is mid-June? I was thinking mid-July like last year (right?). I know it is based on multiple factors so that's excellent news.
Best player is on one side, but the second third and fourth are on the other
This sounds like common sense, but people should shut up with the whole "trade rape" thing. Ripping people who made a "bad trade" just shuts people down. Trading is only intimidating if people act like asses. Creating and promoting a positive atmosphere makes this more fun and more active.
That sounds touchy feely but whatever. There's only one rule that I know of, babies - god damn it, you've gotta be kind.
I love these articles, thanks.
One thought though: I'm not sure how helpful it is to know that, when looking to trade a guy for a pitcher, you should start with the ace that is/was putting up bad numbers and work your way down. Those obvious "buy low" guys seem more like exceptions. I think a more useful answer would be where to stop working your way down before you are losing value.
Now, that depends on league, team needs, etc., but it's a much more interesting answer, in my most humble opinion.
I try to draft blank roster spot every year, but by the end it seems like I've always picked someone else instead
I don't understand why anyone would watch this.
How do you like it? How do you like it?
This is very cool
Note to self: DO NOT TEAR ANTERIOR CAPSULE
That's all fine, but if you think he's a three at best, then you're not a huge Medlen fan.
That's like going to a chess forum and asking for tips on checkers
So, not exactly the same?
Fister at the back end of a draft??
That seems like same old cant prove it so it doesn't exist logic. Mark Reynolds is streaky as hell. When he gets hot you can ride it.
I've made 100 dumber predictions, but the James over Bonds pick, and explanation, had me howling
That does indeed strike me as high, very high, but its still interesting
I think someone said after the draft there is no longer a loss of a draft pick
Gosh I love Greinke
Who cares? What does that have to do with anything?
I love you, Yoenis
Am I crazy or should a beaning of Giancarlo be punishable by painful death?
So, no then
This really is great, thanks
"His new rap song"
Is it the New York spotlight or the pinstripes themselves that will give Pronk health this year?
JK I hear you
That's a big prediction for 15 years from now
I assumed most leagues would go back to the last season he appeared in, and he played 26 games at catcher in 2011. It would annoy me if he wasn't catcher eligible in 2013. I guess I made a bad assumption
