Hi Rian, This took me a bit off guard. I find baseball nuances endlessly fascinating. I learn new things from the Saber community every year. But I was drawn to this community because it was fact based and not politicized opinions. If that's the new frontier, this is where I get off. I've loved this little spot of calm in all the madness of the Internet for probably close to 15 years but it sounds like this will be changing. I'd like to thank you and all the BP staff throughout the years for quality content and I will miss a lot but i will not be renewing.

It always surprises me he was a 2nd rounder with that swing. Was it considered an overdraft at the time or did many believe the swing would work in the pros?

I had always heard Robinson Cano had terrible makeup in the minors. Can anyone confirm that?

That's probably fair, Fidrych is far before my time. I'm not so sure he was hated by his fan base as much as Wilson is, I could be wrong but I've always assumed he was beloved. Wilson appeals to the casual fan who buys into the closer myth and likes their players to be easily identifiable.

I love how people call him hard working,Where is this coming from? What I disliked about him was his lack of hard work and seeing or hearing him out drinking many nights of the week. I hated seeing him around the Marina while the Giants were playing. I realize he was rehabbing but for $10 million I'd like my stars to, I don't know, watch the damned game. Lastly his act was so tiring because it was so clearly contrived. We like our starts to be real. If they're odd and quirky like the Bird it's awesome.

2-1 odds seem excessive for any baseball game let alone the top two NL teams. PECOTA must love Cain as much as I do, I wonder if we have the Cain Cain poster over our beds.

Damn I guess Matt Cain isn't an ace according to the exec because while fully except him to go 7/8 innings and give up maybe a run I fully expect Giants losses.

Can he play SS? It seems like a reasonable assumption as his play at 3rd is amazing.

Wow you just completely skipped over the part where I wrote "this effect isn't deminished on the road so it's not a function of AT&T" because it was at odds with whatever argument you were trying to perpetrate didn't you? I welcome you to go do the research yourself. If you choose to ignore facts you might prefer some Joe Morgan fan sites available on the interwebs.

I do. It's mostly a function of their ability to control home runs allowed. This effect isnt diminished on the road so it's not a function of AT&T. My best guess would be Raggs pitching philosophy but I really have no idea. I just don't like discounting the results because we don't understand them.

Btw i do think he''s a boarderline ace. I'm just sick of the traditional baseball community rating him on wins and some lazy elements of the saber community judging soley on xFIP. Scouts are the only ones who ive ever read who refer to Cain as an ace.

Jim Callis rated 2 of Cain's pitches as 70's. Not sure what this has to do with it. Does this grading by one man make him a ace?

I would be insulted if he was considered the 30th best pitcher in baseball. If you made a list of top 15 pitchers i would assume he's on there. Classic pitchers build, throws tons of innings with a low ERA. What more could you want in an Ace?

Matt Cain has bested his xFIP in every year he's pitched. It's 3/4's of a run better over the course of his career. His 1200 IP+ sample size should prove that. Using xFIP at this point is just plain ignorance in the case of Matt Cain. We've come along way since Voros Mccracken. Now onto the more nebulous and admittedly subjective part: Locally he's seen as the leader of that staff. The national media doesn't portray him that way but that shouldn't matter. We all know Lincecum is better but an "Ace" isn't limited to one per team. If you're penalizing him for not being the best pitcher on his team that doesn't make much either as he happens to be on a staff with a HOF type talent.

You mention Matt Cain but what about him leaves him short of ace status? He led a championship staff to a championship last year. Is there an exec in baseball who wouldn't want to hand him the ball in a big game? If someone is going to throw a xFIP argument at me I don't want to hear it..

Why does the sabermatic love AAAA sluggers so much? Year after year I hear about those guys being touted as undervalued. Re-reading old BP articles shows an unbelievable arrogance on this subject.

I can't find any other sources reporting Zito is starting the year on the DL with a forearm strain. Even with the accident he claims he won't miss a start which seems at odds with the strain.

It seems a bit disingenuous to compare Cain's home/road splits to CarGo's. This isn't the deadfall era, a 3.76 ERA is still far above league average.

What edge does Hanson hold over Sanchez? Sanchez leads in ERA, SIERA and SNWP. SNLVAR is the only category Hanson has a slight lead. At best they look more or less equal wih Sanchez seeming to hold a slight edge. How does Hanson tower over him enough to make up for Lincecum and Cain?

Couldn't help but notice Santo's comp on BR is Beltre (and Adrain's is Santo) from age 21-30. Seeing as Santo's career was over by 34 it isn't hard to imagine Beltre putting together 3 more slightly above average seasons and matching Santo's entire career. Ive never considered Beltre HOF worthy by any measure. Would this indicate perhaps he is? I remain rather skeptical and instead knock Santo down a peg in my mind.

I agree with davelab. It just doesn’t make sense to push Zito (who’s been pitching fantastic lately) or Sanchez who's 30 innings BELOW last years totals. There’s a great argument to be made for them being the best 3/4 starter combo in the league

Anyone have an idea of how fast Alderson's "fringy" fastball is? The two reports Ive seen was 89-93 out of HS and "sits in the low 90's". 92-93 (if he's there) would seem to be enough with plus plus command. Does his body offer anymore projection?

I don’t see how Schierholtz picks up the meaningful AB\'s required to force them to make a move and \"save\" the Giants from him. After Winn and probably Roberts he\'s 3rd on the RF depth chart. What’s he get; 50-75 PA\'s? I doubt anyone could hurt a team much in that sample size.
