Everyone on board the Glasnowtrain! Bell, Glasnow, Taillon, and Kingham should all be up in 2016, that could be a fun year for the Pirates.
I think i've read one about pirate prospect in the past month between the 10 pack and the eyewitness reports
Do you guys just not cover any Pirates affiliates?
Luckiest team in the MLB, as a Pirates fan, I'm sick of the Pirates always having to chase a great team with even greater fortune.
<span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Josh+Bell">Josh Bell</a></span> also went 3-3 with 2 triples on Sunday!
I'm getting excited about <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=101630">Reese McGuire</a></span>, but it looks like it'll be a few years before they can adequately replace <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=45447">Russell Martin</a></span>. I doubt Reese will match Russell's amazing plate discipline though.
Cole struggled a little bit in the 7th but the ump missed a really bad strike call: https://twitter.com/PiratesUmp/status/587697025455620098
The picture for this post on the home page looks like the album art from the new modest mouse album
Solid hitting unit, if a bit pessimistic on Pedro Alvarez. I'm surprised that you have Burnett and Morton completely falling apart when Burnett was injured all last season and Morton hasn't had an xFIP that high since 2009.
Plus Cole regressing his strikeouts and Liriano somehow being barely replacement level.
All those little pessimisms add up to about 5-6 wins lower than you'd see on Fangraphs.
I thought Pitch Perfect was a musical about cups.
Because Taillon is coming off Tommy John, I agree though, I'd put Taillon above Glasnow
Are you guys going to be keeping the same format I guess then as last years?
The Giants have the advantage here mostly due to the SP matchup, but the Pirates have a much better chance of taking out the Nationals. Giants will be down 2-0 in the NLDS before they can blink.
Sandwich doesn't necessarily need to seal, the top piece of bread just needs to be parallel to the bottom, which is not the case of a hot dog or a pita.
Craig nailed it. There is no intent to sandwich the hot dog in a bun. Hence a hot dog in a bun is not a sandwich. However if you put a hot dog between two slices of bread (you're a barbarian if you do this), then it becomes a sandwich. An open face sandwich isn't really a sandwich either. It's more like a pie.
Most players that are 30-40 grade runners aren't playing center field, they're playing the infield in some capacity
Amazing article Jeff, these sort of pieces are why I get my subscription. Why do scouts look at $3.5m like it's a lot of money? It doesn't even buy you one win on the FA market, if Moran comes up and has a Garrett jones career, it still justifies the signing bonus, doesn't it?
whoa new comment system
Pirates 2013 season was pretty magical for me at least.
I didn't know that the Phillies threw at Cutch last night, what the hell is that about? That was barely a celebration by Cutch, I think he does that after every big hit.
Keep up the good work, I know you will!
I didn't realize how much I needed this.
And now Jason is gone too. This podcast is the metric by which all other baseball podcasts should be measured.
Jason, you were the reason why I subscribed to this website and why I gave podcasts a chance. Your articles were always a treat and you were always hilarious to follow on twitter.
Best of luck to you going forward, I know you'll do great things.
The Pirates/Braves 19 inning affair from 2012 was one of my favorite games ever. I was hoping it would make this list. Great pitching, terrible offense, great defense, terrible umpiring.
Guessing when the report was filed he hadn't been moved to 2nd yet.
Tyler Glasnow is the truth.
These are always my favorite articles. Hilarious self assessment
Awesome article on Martin. Pirates absolutely need to re-resign him
Is Bubba Starling even a prospect anymore?
I can't remember the last time I saw a team with 4 prospects in the top 20 ( 3 top 10) like the Cubs. If the Cubs had any pitching or a half decent major league team, I'd be more concerned, but the Cubs are still gonna be a force in the next 10 years.
Hahaha, their top 5 prospects + $100M.
The Yankees simply don't have the pieces.
That Pirates offer was pretty ridiculous, Glasnow is currently dominating in High A, Kingham is dominating in AAA, and Bell is showing why the Pirates gave him $5M. So two mid-rotation starters and corner outfielder? Pretty decent haul for Price.
Huntington, please dont do it.
If you take out Glasnows one historically terrible start this season he's been just as good as advertised with a 10.5 K/9 and a 4.1 BB/9 as a 20 year old in high A.
If that quote was left completely anonymous, I would have thought Jason said it.
GREGORY POLANCO I WANT TO HAVE YOUR BABIES!
Does Stetson Allie have too much want?
Great writeup on the Pirates prospects, do you see Josh Bell making the jump into a top 50 prospect range by the end of the season?
No honorable Mention to bonafacio whos hitting over .500 still?
I would really really love to have the time to read a list like that.
I wonder what scouts would have rated Jackies makeup in 1946?
I think what I enjoy most about the Pirates system right now that it's relatively lower on the risk side now that a lot of them are in the upper minors. If you go back a few years the risk was extreme as a lot of these guys were still in short season ball.
Now playing: Sarah McLachlan - I Will Remember You
Stetson Allie, Wyatt Mathisen, Barrett Barnes, Colton Cain, Chase D'Arnaud, Rudy Owens
Honestly though, as far as top prospects transforming into major leaguers, the Pirates have done extremely well over the past 4-5 years.
I woke up this morning with no expectations except for there to be more snow on the ground and a deep weariness in my heart. Browsing the internet while dreading leaving my cocoon of warmth. I made my way to BP and my heart leapt. Like I said, I had no expectations today, but now I dream the waking dream of the spring to come.
When will the projection systems believe in Cutch? Would it take another 2-3 years of his current level?
Couldn't Matt Harvey have just posted his peak season? #2 starters can have seasons like that.
Hard to argue with Hanson being left off after the year he had. Is SS not even an option for him anymore?
I guess complaining about polanco and taillon being so low (relatively) would fall on deaf ears considering the fact that the pirates have 7 guys on the 101.
So many AAAA players, so few places to put them!
So what does Brian Kenny rate on the Verducci scale? A 6?
Wonder what this list will look like after Price gets traded.
I think it's a macro level, probably all major league shortstops have at least a 6 grade arm or else they wouldn't be playing SS.
If the Pirates throw in a top 3 prospect, can they get Trout for 2 weeks?
FG looked at this, I think they concluded that he'll hit 12-15 homers.
Seems like the only one that has any real trade value is Sanchez, but did you look at the White Sox list? That's a bottom 10 system too.
This is awesome, I wonder where Tanaka would fit on this article?
The Yankees have spent $240M so far this offseason, if they spend ~$180M on Cano and ~$100M on Tanaka (contract + posting fee), then they'll have spent more than the entire net worth of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball club (whose biggest FA signing ever totaled $17M.)
Hooray for parity.
Congrats to Zach and Jason. Good Luck to Jason in restocking the system and carrying on the prospect rankings without them.
You have 7 prospects probably for the top 101, but then comment the depth of the system compared to years past. Personally after reading this, I would think this system has a top of depth but not a lot of starpower.
A lot of the big names are high floor type prospects, rather than ace prospects or role 7 position players. So if I had to guess, most of their top 101 guys would probably fit into the 40-80 range
Scouts rave a lot.
He's doing it AL to NL, west to east, last to first
In 3 years, there will have been a current prospect born after Y2K. Feel old yet?
I personally read the "realistic role" portion as: "If he makes the majors, what is his role?" Otherwise he might as well write: "Will break your heart" under each prospect.
What is it with the mariners and position player prospects? Seems like the front office has done a great job of bringing in talent on the hitting side, but a higher percentage of them have busted than normal. Is it just bad luck or do they have weaknesses in player development?
I like to think that redacted person is kevin
Interesting that you have Appel slotted as a number 2 starter, this isn't the first time that people have spoken of Appel's lack of emotion on the mound, should that really hurt him? What does it matter how he acts if he keeps getting good results?
I'm so excited, it's my favorite time of the baseball year!
Good luck Colin, I'll miss your writing.
Calm down, half those guys are in the low minors and they're all still at least 2 years away. They need to trade some of their hitting prospects for pitching.
I have no experience and am 2 hours from the closest minor league park, hire me!
The Baseball gods are cruel. Life is meaningless. The universe is indifferent.
This is about as good as playoff baseball gets. I'm proud of how my Pirates have done against the Cardinals this year.
The cardinals have owned Morton this year historically, but Morton is home and he is so overdue for some good luck against the cardinals.
Pedro makes me sad, I hope they pump up his value in 2014 and 2015 and then trade him. I hope the have a good 3rd base replacement by then, maybe they can move one of the catchers to third?
52% chance? I feel very nervous, I'm not used to this feeling.
I miss you Kevin
It shows a healthy respect towards McCutchen that there's no secret formula for getting him out. I like the Bonds quote, make your pitch in the correct sequence and you can get anyone out.
I never would have guessed this
Plus promotions to the big leagues always help.
Surprised that Gregory Polanco wasn't on this list. Started the season as a borderline top 50, finished as a borderline top 10.
I'm not really sure what to root for now with the Pirates, the albatross of .500 has been around for almost 84% of my life.
What would Francisco Liriano have gotten this year if he was a free agent as compared to last year?
Can't argue with any of the Pirates listed here, but holy crap, what a jump for Gregory Polanco.
And this doesn't even count in jhang, heredia, meadows, or McGuire.
This system is absolutely stacked.
Little surprised that the pirates weren't mentioned as a system on the rise. Herrera, bell, Sanchez, kingham, Allie, pimentel, and glasnow have all had monster first halves, and combine that with taillon, polanco, and hansons great starts, they were a #7 system preseason, they have to be top 3 now, right?
Back in my day, pitchers used to hit.
Not a big fan of Alen Hanson I take it? Seems like the only thing most scouts have against him is that he exploded onto the scene even though some people had him as a sleeper before last season. He'll be starting at Bradenton, correct? And he's only 19-20
I still don't get all the hype for Billy Hamilton, he has no power, and he'll get thrown out a lot more in the majors. Sure if everything works out, he's the next Juan Pierre, but if not, then he's Scott Podsednik. Neither option to me sounds all that great.
I'm sorry, I'm more optimistic on Pedro, Marte, and Walker.
And I don't forsee such a regression from Burnett, especially since he wasn't particularly lucky last season.
Glad to see Victor Black tearing up AA, I'd like to see him promoted to AAA while Morris takes over Lincolns position in the majors.
What did you mean on twitter when you said that Polanco's tools are louder?
I disagree with Taillons ranking. He's been inconsistent, but he's still got a 3:1 K:BB ratio and it looks like hes finally on a roll.
