That'a a great question, there is a such a shortage of quality starting pitching vs position players.

From high A to the majors in 1 year? I would think an ETA of 2019 is a better estimate, I can't see the Jays pushing him up that far at age 19.

Hopefully if Colon makes it back he starts an inter-league game. Because let's be honest - at this point we'd rather see him hit than pitch.

Although the initial lead may be much larger and increase the chances of stolen bases, are we sure the lead when the pitch crosses the plate is actually more than average? The data suggests it is not larger and logically it can't be because otherwise the catcher would just throw behind the runner. Unless you are stealing the size of the initial lead doesn't matter. When coaching baserunning I taught my kids to take a short lead initially off 3B but have their momentum heading home in case of a passed ball (which of course occurs a lot with young kids). We stole more runs that average this way.

The thing I'm most surprised by is baseball has put in rules to improve player safety when it comes to catchers and middle infielder slides, but is basically turning a blind eye to pitchers who are throwing harder than ever throwing at batters. Let's hope it doesn't take a serious injury from them to make a change like it did with the Utley slide rule.

Television breaks are longer but it depends if the problem being addressed in pace of play or length of game. I don't mind the breaks between innings as it's the time to go the bathroom or get a snack. The issue, in the minds of some including myself, is the lack of action between the breaks. Too many strikeouts, walks, mound visits, etc. and not enough balls in play.

I'd rather see a limit on the number of innings played in the regular season, let's say 12 innings and after that the game ends in a tie. The advantage is more for player safety than time as games rarely go longer than this. For traditionalists I'm not saying I like this option, just that I like it better than the alternative. Starting an inning with runners on base in one step away from a home run derby to determine the winner in my mind.

You alluded to it in one point but the bookmakers don’t care one bit about who is going to win, they simple work to attract or discourage betting on teams so that no matter wins the house comes out ahead. Most of the problems for E3 in the past were related to throwing the ball, not catching it. He's fine at 1B. It's hard to look at this any other way than Toronto jumped too quickly and overpaid for Morales based on this deal and the other bats still unsigned. Morales is much worse defensively.

I understand that home field in the World Series based on record isn't perfect, but it's so much better than the all-star game. It may encourage a team to fight for an extra win at the end of the season and more times than not will reward the better team so I don't see any downside at all.

Luck didn't make a base running mistake on a ground ball to 3rd in game 2. You're either running on contact or you aren't. Luck didn't commit the defensive errors in game 1. So far, Toronto has simply been better.

That's a really good point. I'd seen Osuna do it during the year a few times with mixed results. But you're right, the timing was perfect given the previous swings and the home run power that was at the plate.

Perhaps, but there is little doubt the best Toronto starters have been Estrada, Happ and Sanchez and all 3 will be pitching on regular or extra rest. They can then add either Stroman or Liriano in game 4 if they need to. I'm not saying Toronto will win, I just don't see that using 2 starters is any kind of problem for them especially given it was a must win game.

Nice attempt, but I'm not buying it. Leaving the best reliever in baseball in years on the bench and bringing in Jimenez is a bad decision even if it worked. You can judge decisions before and after the results are in and in both cases this is inexplicable. I checked the twitter feed and it appears Brian Kenny is still alive. I agree Liriano is likely to start but I think Stroman will be the first out of the bullpen for Toronto. This leaves Estrada, Happ and Sanchez for the next series and maximizes their chances of success and helps solve the Jays problem of middle relief. As for Baltimore pitchers in elimination games are usually on very short leashes and I expect Tillman will start but you may see that string of relievers fairly quickly if he gets into trouble.

Not on it's own, no, but to take it one step further if the statistical analysis shows that bunts are less effective than they used to be and this data made it's way into the manager's offices this off season then it would lead to the decision to bunt less. I know many baseball commentators who complain that these 'kids' don't learn the fundamentals. I think I'll take Mike Trout over a guy who can bunt, but they may have a point in there somewhere.

Interesting on the length of games as I would strongly be in favour of shorter games. However I'm ok if the game is longer if the reason is more offensive action (hits, stolen base attempts). The implication of the fact that the umpire's strike zones can be reviewed accurately is an increased awareness of when the catcher 'stole' a strike. The argument is that with the umpire aware of this data his strike zone will be more consistent over time and I agree this logic makes sense.

I assume it has to be the 7 years of his contract, so if that's the case what's the reason to deferred the payments? What did I miss?

I have a suggestion for MLB to help fix this problem. Let the computer call balls and strikes. Pitching framing as a skill to offset incorrect calls makes no sense to me. I know the 'purists' won't agree with me, but if it's a strike it's a strike.

I love Pompey but he had a rough 2015 and I think could benefit from playing everyday in Buffalo for a year. All of this assumes Saunders is healthy and able to play most days after missing almost all of last year, I'm just not sure that OF depth was really that much of a position of strength.

He's making good money this year, he's a free agent at the end of this season and if he stays health and has a good season he could sign a bigger deal next year. In game 5 the other day Colabello was left in the game to face Dyson even though Smoak was coming in the next inning for defence. Colabello got a hit.

I was in the stands and all we saw what the replay that showed the ball hit Choo's hand/bat and the home plate umpire calling the play dead before the runner crosses the plate. Then the reversal and the run counted. If the home plate umpire had ruled from the beginning the run counted it would have been much calmer. I don't think the author is overstating it. If the runner at first had been ruled out on the Pompey slide it would have been really ugly inside that stadium. The place was already at the boiling point.

Nice attempt but I'm not buying it. Change it to allow up to 35 but only allow 25 to be 'dressed' each game, the rest watch from the press box like in hockey. This would effectively expand the daily roster by 4 since teams would generally not dress the remainder of the starting rotation and if you deem everyone who is called up 'active' from a service time perspective then all your arguments in favor of the status quo have been covered.

Based on the years and the body type, the Giants may look back on this as the best deal they didn't make.

Good article, I'd be interested to hear more about this: 'PITCHf/x is not perfect either—the system has a margin of error as well.' I would think the margin of error would be extremely small once the criteria have been clearly established? I.e. front of the plate, at least 50% of the ball over the plate, clear rules on the height? I'd like to see the computer call balls and strikes as I expect it would have the added benefit of speeding up the game.

Paying a SS only until his age 35 season is an excellent contract in this day and age of long deals. Jeter was a feel good story the past year to many, but paying him (thus preventing the money from being spent elsewhere) and leaving him at shortstop was part of the reason the Yankees didn't win.

Given the success Aaron Sanchez is having out of the bullpen do you think the Jays would be better turning him into a setup guy next year with the goal of being the closer?

Actually I went in to my lineup and changed my bullpen settings as soon as I heard this. Of course it will only count for the last 2 weeks this year :-)

I find it odd that MLB has changed the home plate collision rules to prevent injury, yet the suspensions for pitching throwing at hitters have gone down.

In one or two of the starts that Stroman was hit hard there was talk of him tipping pitches and from this article it wasn't because of his release point. Of course the Jays pitching coach Pete Walker didn't provide any details, my assumption is that he was giving away the grip on the ball before the pitch?

I believe the 40 / 60 split pre-September post-September numbers are a rough estimate and the final numbers are influenced by actual playing time splits. There were gory math details included in a note a few weeks ago :-) If someone is willing to take Asdrubal Cabrera off my hands I want to be in that league!

Would the lower BABIP for David Ortiz be partially a result of the use of the shift by all teams now? I thought he was done years ago and was wrong but father time remains undefeated and that time is now.

I get the point of the article, but taking the opposite argument the signing of Navarro was actually big because of his defense. Navarro is only an average defensive catcher you say? I'll agree with that, which puts him light years ahead of J.P. Arencibia who got worse as the seasons went on and didn't know how to call a game. It was ironic to see J.P. still complaining about how unfair the Toronto media was to him while with Texas and hitting under .140 and then a few days later get sent down. Unless he gives his head a shake he won't make it back. Don't blame others, look in the mirror and work harder. I still think the lack of a true 2B is going to come back to haunt the Jays. Francisco has more holes in his swing than swiss cheese and Lawrie's better at 3B.

Agree and there should be at least a 1 game suspension for throwing the bat - you've got to send a message that there is no place for this in baseball.

I wasn't aware of the need to have a full 40 man roster. I assume this is why guys with serious injuries are first put on the 15 day disable list instead of immediately going to the 60 day DL, the club is going to wait until they need to make another move?

The Jays have a bunch of pitchers who are out of options (Esmil Rogers, Todd Redmond, McGowan, Jeremy Jeffress)so there is almost no chance Stroman starts in the majors as they don't want to lose a guy. In fact they are likely to keep 13 pitchers to start the season as they did last spring to protect as many arms as possible. Depending on injuries and guys struggling he is a likely call up in May / June and I'd rather had him for the season than Santana.

It's a good list when I'm discussing a guy in the 40's, but I'd take Ryan Goins over the last 6 guys on the list. Unless the Jays sign Drew he'll be the starting 2B. Of course he hasn't hit at any level so there is no reason to expect him to contribute much.

It was odd that Stroman wasn't call up in September last year to get a taste of the big leagues. But ironically I think it will work out because he's out to prove he belongs. I expect him to be called up early in 2014 when one of the Jays big league starters inevitably goes down.

Having watched J.P. Arencibia I would say the improvement on defense must be based on a small sample size or just a plain outlier. That isn't to say he can't improve in 2014 if he puts his mind to it, but in 2013 he was consistently bad all year.

Pretty bang on. Hutchison looked good in September and Arizona and has more upside than Drabek at this point according to most reports. If you ignore Hutchison because he's coming off Tommy John then you have to skip a quarter of all pitchers. I have no idea why Toronto fans aren't pushing Rogers to spend more money. Look at this offense and add Omar Infante and you've really got something and you still aren't one of the top 2 spenders in the division. This also strengthens your bench because I watched Izturis all last year and he's not a starter. 3rd or 4th place this year unless something big happens.

Step 4 makes sense for the Jays with EE playing 1B and Lawrie at 3B, switching them would work since EE has played 3B in the past, most other firstbase men would be lost at third.
