Thanks for sharing, Joshua. I always find your posts insightful, honest and heartfelt. You're a true value to the BP site. Please keep posting whenever you feel passionately about something--it comes across on the page.
Mauricio, what're the chances you think Diaz stays at short? Thanks!
Robles was promoted FYI. Not Low-A
A Fedora? Need a KG appearance.
Correa actually left the stadium......http://m.mlb.com/cutfour/2015/05/27/126911550/top-prospect-correa-crushes-ball-out-of-stadium?partnerId=as_mlb_20150527_46498086&adbid=603452278154997760&adbpl=tw&adbpr=241544156
I just want to say: you have a unique, compelling perspective that I don't see written about anywhere else. I love reading these pieces, please keep writing them, I always learn a lot. You've brought a new, fantastic facet to BP.
Easily Top Three
I enjoy your work Craig, but I disagree with your assessment of Jose Altuve. Sure, there's gonna be some BABIP regression, but projecting his 2012 season as his true line seems light to me. He's cut his K rate significantly this season (from 12.6% to 8.3%) and from an eye test perspective he's just taking much better at bats. I think it's wrong to attribute most of his improvement to BABIP variance, and more of that improvement seems due to a just-turned 24-year-old getting more reps and maturing into his game.
I guess we'll see next season and the rest of the way, but it wouldn't surprise me if something like .330-.340 is his true BABIP and he's a .300-.315 guy for his career-- not a .290 guy.
Would you throw a quick report in on D'Arnuad?
Got to be one of the most talented groups for Future Shock... ironic that it's lead off by a 50th rounder
This was phenomenal JP, the fan in all of us still lives, no matter how deeply we analyze the game. Great job.
Waking up and reading this was one of the best possible decision I could have made in this instance. Win for my existential reality, great job Jason (as always).
#TheLegend is fine with his ranking (my good friend @Sp11ke on twitter assures me), but expects to be in the top 30 next year or he'll hit a homer with so much #want that it'll wind up next to KG in Dekalb.
Jason, I've said this so many times before, but man I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!! Only Jason could get away with making essentially an entire post a satirical "Real Genius" joke, this might be one of your finest on par with a "Jason goes to a random game / takes the bus" stories or "The Verducci Chronicles". I don't care what White Sox fans say, you're the GOAT JP.
Very good article Ben, and this just proves the continual awesomeness of Scott Boras, who I'd argue is one of the 10 most compelling figures in all of baseball right now.
Which season does Nick Franklin come closer to replicating next yr: two years ago or last yr
Great job JP as always, keep it up. I like all of the introspective pieces you work on, they strike me as particularly honest. My favorite was the one of you on the bus, that was phenomenal. Keep 'em comin'.
People who fail to like this piece are equivalent to those who fail to like Dostoevsky; sure, sometimes it becomes long, nonsensical and off topic, but it's that meandering of thought that makes the piece so good. Sometimes it's about the journey rather than the destination, and that is the case here as it is with a great Russian novel (besides Anna Karinina, that just sucked). Great job JP, keep writing these. I can find out which players outperformed their xFip elsewhere, this is what I want out of you.
I like this post except for the implication that there is any possibility that #TheLegend doesn't become the best player in major league baseball. I rest my case. #want.
I give this an EASY 80. Great job Jason, I really appreciate you bearing your heart and soul in this piece, you can really feel not only the #want but your #need. You're #TeamLegend forever in my book JP.
My Comment is Pimentel: a little disappointing. Is he more valuable for fantasy because we don't care which OF position he plays and Power is obviously so valuable?
Just finished the article, 80 GRADE. Great job KG, keep up the good work. Also, maybe the kid was just a big Ahman Green fan?
KG, that was a great Parks and Rec slip in, ENTERTAINMENT 720 would have been involved, too bad they're out of business. That show is so good.
I know Jose Altuve got exposed a little in the majors but he's young, has done nothing but hit and is SO CUTE!!! Would it SHOCK you if he was a .300 avg, .350ish OBP 2nd basemen in his prime with 10-20 HR's?
This article is #TeamLegend as well as showing #want. It didn't reach Verducci status but, lets be honest, what does.
Fantastic article Steven, couldn't agree more. The retroactive view of managerial moves is generally negligent by the Media and fans especially. Very well done!
Seger Time is gonna catch on like Hammer Time. Just watch.
Jason is just the best. I assume Pitt qualifies for The Good Face but how does he compare to Christiano Ronaldo? Pitt's an 80 (Harper / Stanton Power) and Ronaldo's a "90" (Hamilton Speed)?
100% Neugebauer and Neighborgall needs to be made into a movie. Matt Damon plays an elder Neugebaur and young-up-and-comer yet hot head Edward Norton plays Neghborgall. It premiers after the Rounders sequel that should never be made.
He's a 70-80 defender. 100%..
Who has more upside/who do you like more: Paxton/ Parker
Keith Law recently said he says Lance McCullers as a future reliever and I couldn't tell if he was joking. What do you think of McCullers?
What is Vincent Catricala's power projection like?
What would you grade Catricala's hit tool on the 2-8 scale at the major league level now and also his projection on it? Thanks KG!
Jason, do you know anything about Vincent Catricala? He's put up video game numbers everywhere he's gone yet I hear nothing of him as a prospect. Could he hit for both avg and power at the major league level? What's his 3rd base defense like? Thanks JP!
Guillermo Pimentel is striking out a LOT. As you said at the Bar event this could be attributed to the coaches just telling him to let it rip, but I haven't heard a lot about Pimentel's hit tool. Does it project to be an average offering?
Great article yet again.
What is Oswaldo Arcia's offensive upside?
Re: Lorenzo Cain. Where would he have been on this list? He seems to have the defensive chops for the position but how has his offensive development been? Thanks professor.
Brett Jackson is not gone to be a star I agree but much of his struggles were due to his wrist injury. no?
Great article Professor but I have to say I find your article more modern-day Dostoyevsky because no matter what you write about you hint at greater meaning and a lot of existentialism. I will always love your writing and I agree with Mr. Cthulhu, I really, really, really hope you don't get a job with a major league team but it seems an inevitability. Good luck out there JP.
Sorry I missed the show this week, I got home from a Taylor Swift concert. KG have fun with that... (also she was really good, beautiful voice)
Jason your writing reminds me of #TheLegend but a little less raw. I'll give you a current 55 and a future 70, not quite Dostoevsky, Faulkner, Joyce, Ruth, or Mays but I think you've got a ton of projection and could be pretty freakin' good.
Hey KG- is Stetson Allie still a top 100 guy in your opinion? Also, last year you listed Guillermo Pimentel as a 4 star guy, is he still that and will he be a likely top 100 guy? Thanks!
This is an amazing article Jason but you're wrong about one thing. You are a great writer.
Pimentel a plausible top 100 guy or too far away / small sample?
Jorge Alfaro will hit 600 home runs and make the hall of fame one day. I'm feelin' it.
Any thoughts on Jonathan Schoop? Dude's 19 years old and tearing it UP. Possible plus on the future power, can he stay at short, and can he give Machado a run for his money as the Baltimore SS of the future?
Jake Marisnick is good but if they hypothetically sign all those draftees would he even be top 5 in the system? Top 10? Top 100 overall in baseball?
Does anyone know what's wrong with Archer? Is he still considered an SP prospect or more RP? Upside still a 2 starter? Thanks KG!
If you had to take one: Paul Goldschmidt or Matt Adams? Higher Upside? Higher body mass index?
What grade is given to Desmond Jennings' power? Is a 20 HR season in the majors a plausibility?
You talked about Billy Hamilton a while ago on the Podcast after last season. Do you still think he's the kind of guy that could lead the league in SB's in triple figures or will he just not hit enough? Are you still as high on him as you were?
Hey Kevin, thanks for your work everyday.
I was wondering what you think the problem is with Billy Hamilton? Shouldn't he be able to "Juan Pierre" hit his way to a .280+ average? Is this an aberration or did he change something about the way he hits? I hope last year's .318 wasn't a fluke. Additionally if his OBP is at .300 how in the WORLD does the guy have 21 steals (4 CS) in 25 games? If he hit .300 that means he'd steal over one a game right?
Hey Kevin, I know that the sample size is still quite small so I was wondering at what point does a player rack up enough games for it to be significant? To me 30-40 games and about 150 PA's seems okay in the big leagues but for minor leaguers how long until guys like Paul Goldschmidt and others are "breaking out". Thanks
