I'd love to hear how the team forecasts susac's playing time and numbers as well.
Thanks Matt. Thornburg is available too. him or cam?
Who's the better spec play for saves, romo or bedrosian?
How do the Nats view Voth? Is he just an org arm at this point (for the Nats specifically and also in terms of his profile in the league? Whether it was due to protecting the service time of Gio/Lopez or just allowing them more seasoning in AAA, I'm surprised Voth didn't get the call before at least one of them.
Totally off topic but always curious what qualifies you as a "scooter"?
we can keep 7 pitchers on minors roster, and promote and demote them until they exceed rookie innings limit. i scooped and stashed him when he got called up
1. My relievers are pap, melancon, madson, perkins on DL. also Have jumbo diaz in 16 team h2h dynasty league only uses saves. should i drop him in favor or maurer, dan hudson, or jim henderson? seung oh also out there and i'm actually considering him just for the ratios, Ks and K:<span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=BB" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('BB'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">BB</span></a>. what do you think? 2. Is Barraclough worth a stash on my minors roster? Thanks
Most likely to become CL at some point. strop, madson, jumbo, axford, quack, maurer, duke, addison reed.
Great idea for a series of articles.
O/U on how many years Cruz will continue to appear on the do not draft list?
With all the closer jobs being opened up, curious who you think is the best gamble for saves in DET, MIl (if KRod dealt), COL (due to Axford's recent implosion and LaTroy's trade), OAK (can mujica keep the job), and any other jobs I'm forgetting that don't have declared replacements (ATL, PHI)? In what order would you pick any of these guys up?
how'd you rank strop, siegrist (with rosenthal possibly hurt), scribner (if clippard dealt) for rest of year?
And <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=100628">Brett Phillips</a></span> is another guy I'd throw out there.
Great article. One suggestion would be to link to the Dynasty 101 article so lazy, forgetful people such as myself don't have to search the site for it to refresh our memories.
Superb, easy to understand analysis of pitch usage and sequencing.
Wow. An app is long overdue! Don't screw us Android user by making it iOS only.
Great Billy Madison reference.
To what do you attribute Reyes seemingly improved control between the first and second half of the season? Granted it still wasn't ideal, but he dramatically reduced his BB/9. Was it a matter of refinement of mechanics or him going to or away from pitches that ultimately positively impacted his command/control?
As a long time BP reader who subscribed mainly for Goldstein's prospect coverage, his departure was a sad event. But Jason and team brought the prospect coverage to another level, unmatched on the net. So it's with great sadness that I have to say good-bye to another prospect writer/scout. Very large shoes to fill. Good luck to Jason and BP!
While not an impact talent like Taylor, Steven Souza is ahead of him in the org. Anyone have any idea where Souza might fit in the Nationals' plans? He's age appropriate for AAA and putting up some big numbers. Whether in WAS or somewhere else, is he a bench OF or a solid regular?
Corey Dickerson or Francisco Liriano
What do you think Matz's ceiling and realistic role is?
Great stuff as usual Doug. if assigning rotation positions to each, how would they rate? no.2, 3, etc?
Mike, do you use a custom dollar value calculator or do you calc the values yourself? if you use a calculator, which one do you use?
Has Souza's production this year increased his ceiling? What do you think it is?
I'd love to see a write up of corey dickerson. He's been a monster with full time PT.
Who do you prefer in a dynasty league as a spec saves play, Corey Knebel or Bedrosian?
Betances mechanics must pose less of a problem in short bursts out of the pen than they did in the rotation? Do you think they'll prevent him from being a reliable lock-down closer? To date his results have been excellent.
I can't pick when to start Salazar to save my life. Started him every time he's been lit. Sat him every time he's been passable.
Reyes, that is.
I wholeheartedly second this!
Very interesting article.
This is for the authors or the community...Who are some of the pitchers that have had success with the knuckle-curve (other than Burnett and those on the Braves staff)?
Mike Olt's graph seems to be a little off unless he somehow managed to receive 6 1st place votes.
Really excellent stuff. Great job.
What is Billy Hamilton's 3rd category of contribution? I'm a little stumped.
Curious what Hamilton's 3rd category contribution is. I see R and SBs, but no power, won't be driving in runs, and I don't see even a .250 hitter unless he surprises.
Wow! Some heavy hitters. Love seeing prospect guys from outside BP that I religiously read (Sickels, Callis, Newman, Sussman) involved in this exercise. Great job!
Your fantasy coverage has really cranked it up this year. Not only is the minor league content worth the price of admission, but the vastly expanded fantasy presence makes this one of the best investments for baseball fans on the net. Great job!
I echo everyone's comments. This has been an outstanding follow-up to Goldstein's interpretation.
This is easily one of the best columns I've seen. Great to see MLB players in here as well. Become commonplace to hear scouts' takes on prospects, but much more rare to hear them speak about MLBers. Your site has really stepped up its game this year.
What were your thoughts on Taijuan? Has the command/control taking a step forward this year or is it still SSS? If he keeps it up, is he close to Bradley for the top pitcher in MiLB crown?
Curious what your thoughts are regarding Gerritt Cole for the ROS, and his 1st MLB start. Apologies if you've already posted them somewhere on this site. Who do you see having a bigger impact this year, Cole or Wacha?
Better chance of saves ROS, Thayer or Capps?
In a dynasty league with K/BB (no holds), would you rather have Alex Torres or AJ Ramos?
Great format. I'm trying to juggle OFs until AJax, Harper and Grandy come back. Which do you prefer of Duda, Rasmus, Quentin and Ozuna? And although he's not an OF (I can move Trumbo from 1B to OF), would Moreland trump them all when he comes back?
Is lackey a guy you start every time out now, or just stream worthy?
Paul, could you rank these guys ROS in a standard 5x5, or at least put them in tiers? AJ Griffin, Lincecum, Lackey, Marcum, Hellickson, Hughes, Skaggs, Phelps, Ubaldo.
Bravo! One of the most useful resources for prospect hounds on the interwebs. Been waiting for this to go live. Great job on your revamped prospect coverage/team. I was unsure how BP would fill the large void when Goldstein left, but you have far exceeded my expectations and your prior prospect coverage. Shout out to Parks and the rest of the team. Keep it up. By far the best top 10 lists released this year. Amazing detail.
would you drop espinosa for either segura or a. simmons in a 5x5 obp league?
In a 10 team 5x5 that uses obp, is it worth dropping maybin for span? Like maybin's speed upside but he obviously needs to get on base. Not overflowing with speed (Kemp -will he run or hit?, Altuve, Pagan, Heyward, Espinosa). Maybin is basicall my OF6 (we start 5). Also could drop him for Segura or A. Simmons and bench espinosa for now.
Who can you see being the top 5-10 prospects on next year's list?
Would love to have John explain why he believes the BBWAA should be the "solo proprietors of the Hall of Fame voting". Makes no sense that broadcasters and internet writers have virtually no voice in this process. For God's sake, Vin Scully not being able to vote is a travesty when you have voters submitting blank ballots in "protest". The BBWAA is a joke, and many members are self-righteous, self-serving, self-promoting hypocrites.
Wow, JT, you nailed this one big-time.
Jack Morris will not be pleased. Although I bet other than Tigers fans (and maybe Twins fans) and some writers who happen to think he was the best pitcher of all pitchers who pitched exactly between the years 1980 and 1989, most other baseball fans can live with that.
Can you define a first-division and second-division? is it simply the difference between a regular on the yankees/sox and a regular on the pirates/A's?
When's that one hitting the site?
Do the White Sox not believe in Viciedo, or do they just not think he's ready, whether it be because of glove or patience at the plate? I'm surprised that he hasn't been up yet and that they're putting in waiver claims on guys like Kubel instead of giving this kid a look to at least get his bat in the lineup.
