Unfortunately, Nathan is now a red light.
Hopefully, if he is indeed out for a lengthy period of time, they will try to fill the need within. I'm not that excited to see Smoltz try to close for the Twins at 43 years of age.
I didn't think I would ever live to see the day where the Twins would sign someone like Thome to be a pinch hitter and part time player.
Are my Twins growing up to become a mid market team? I feel proud.
LOL. Give them until spring training! It'll happen.
I still have Tony Batista nightmares!
Was that true for his opponent Richard Hall as well? As I had read that he had flunked a test as well.
I do appreciate the correction though. That is in fact a difference and renders my individual point moot.
However, I do stand by the concept that there has been a lot of PED use in other sports. It seems like baseball has to take the brunt of the mainstream coverage though. That, to me, is very unfair.
My second favorite sport is the red light district of sports, professional boxing. I've been a fan for over 30 years. There is NO QUESTION that the sport has been invaded by PED drugs. As a matter of fact, Roy Jones Jr. tested positive after a fight in Indiana in 2001.
The response from the mainstream and boxing media? Crickets chirping.
Of course I don't appreciate the fact that PED's were used by any baseball player. But I would think we are long past the feigned outrage and desire to "Do things right like the old time players".
The old time players were popping uppers and drinking the pain away. It's not as if human nature suddenly overwhelmed MLB 10 years ago.
Same here. Rod Carew and Andre Dawson were my favorite ball players when I was a kid. So I'm biased as heck when talking about Andre Dawson getting into the Hall of Fame.
I understand the argument against him, and I respect it. But I'm still glad the Hawk is in.
Thankfully Andre Dawson was elected to the HOF today, but I wish that Tim Raines was joining him in the HOF as well.
Kevin Appier, Pat Hentgen, David Segui got votes?
**Slaps hand against forehead**
I'm actually surprised that Bert Blyleven got screwed again. I don't know why, but I am.
I'm very happy for Andre Dawson. I loved watching Hawk growing up.
Alomar deserved to be elected, but I think some writers wanted to "punish" him for a 13 year old incident. So it goes, not the first time that's happened.
Well, I wish Joe the best in whatever is next in his future!
Life is about change. Some change is better than others of course, but nothing stays the same.
BP will continue to be a terrific baseball website, just a little less so today.
Thanks for a great year of service. Baseball Prospectus has increased my enjoyement of baseball many times over.
Good to see Seattle waste more at bats with Griffey next season.
Yeah. I've had the misfortune of watching Gomez strike out and hack for two years. I'm VERY HAPPY it's the Brewers problem....I mean opportunity now.
I'm very happy to see Abreu back in the fold next season for my beloved Angels.
Any chance Vladmir Guerrero takes a short contract with an option? Or is he as good as gone?
I was thinking along the same lines. There are so many delays in the game that taking a minute to review a call isn't going to make it any worse.
Personally, I would take the extra 60 second delay in return for getting a call correct.
Great point on Rivera. Worry about today.
The Ryan Howard line drive catch didn't look obvious to me either way, so I won't spaz at the Umpires on that one.
Loved how the TV crew wet themselves praising the Jeter bunt attempt. LOL. That was a horrible at bat. Why give up an out intentionally there when they have a .330 hitter and a man on 2nd with a lead?
I'd go with Lee in game 4 in case you need him for a 7th game. It's not the regular season, it's survivor baseball.
But who knows what'll happen in the next 2 games. It'll be fun to see this play out tonight. I wonder if Martinez can pull it off.
I'm actually most curious to see how ARod responds to his crappy performance last night. Of course, facing a guy like Lee at his peak certainly didn't help him.
Yankees in 6. Too deep.
I like Charlie Manuel though. He's not a glory hound, and obviously is doing a good job in Philly. 2 NL titles can't be wrong.
When I become Leader of the World, the first thing I do is force the NL to use the DH.
I prefer professional hitting 1-9.
Never even thought about this approach before.
This is why I love this website. :)
It sounds like a really interesting idea to try, but I can't imagine anyone actually doing it, for fear of "offending" someone in the rotation. I love baseball as much as I can love anything non-family related, but baseball players can be a little sensitive.
Don't care about the steriod issue anymore.
The thing the REALLY BOTHERS ME (sorry for yelling) is the long delay between games in October. I know the Networks control the world, but talk about killing momentum!
I realize it'll never change, but I wonder if it cools some of the enthusiasm of the casual follower. Put 3-4 days between series and they'll just move on to whatever dancing show is on and forget about it. I know the baseball people will follow it and find it, but does the general TV public do the same?
Oh well....here is to a great series!
I'm hoping my Angels don't let Abreau go without a fight. I know he wasn't exactly sparkling in that Yankee series, but he was a big part of this years Western Division title.
I'd venture it's worth a 2 year contract to keep him in Anaheim.
I love Vladamir Guerrero, but I think that letting him walk might be in their best interest, unless he decides to sign for a 1 year deal. I don't have a clue what the free agent market will be this year but I would think Guerrero would have a couple of suitors.
Bob Costas went off on that very topic during one of those 1980s NBC games back in the day.
I think it was a silly time for the Umpire to make a stand on something that has been allowed for a long time. So I hated that specific call.
However, as a general rule I think that it's silly to call anything other than the fielder touching the bag as an out.
I think the Twins run is interesting because they've played many of these same bad teams all season and didn't have a run like this before now.
Hey, they are greatly flawed and get too much credit for willingly handcuffing themselves by never spending money. But I don't think they should have to apologize for what division they are in.
I really don't care for A.J.Hinch "learning" how to manage at the Big league level. I thought that is what the minor and independent leagues was for.
I have had a migraine all week while watching the Twins muddle their way through another division race without making a serious move.
Seriously, I'm just going to jump over to being an Angels fan. At least they try.
Do the Braves ever consider releasing Garrett Anderson this season?
It's good to see Juan doing well. However, this won't last. I'm sure LA is grateful for the good timing of his spike in production though.
Seems to me the Braves had a really good week. Maybe not PR wise, but baseball move wise.
We shall see.
I'm impressed with the way the Angels have hung around even with all of the starting pitching injuries and the tragedy. They had some guys take advantage of their opportunities.
I grew up in Minnesota in the 1980's and had the priveledge of watching Mr. Blyleven frequently in the 2nd half of his career. What a great Hall of Fame pitcher!
Really good interview. Lots of information.
I don't care for this kind of crap at all, but I'm long past the hand wringing stage.
I think there are players who are clean, but I'm not certain anymore. Knowing who is and isn't seems almost impossible at this point.
I enjoy baseball so much I'm going to be a hypocrite and just enjoy the game regardless of what these guys do. I don't trust anyone at this point, but it still is a beautiful game.
I wonder the same thing. Maybe Manny wanted to finally be a mother?
It's a bad thing, but at the same time that is one bright spot in it!
Mr. Ortiz is in a mood, isn't he?
I don't blame Cooper for saying the things he is saying publicly. What else can he say? "We are doomed"?
The larger point though is that the Astros are wasting time being mediocre.
I've always thought you should be in one of two modes. Either a contender for the World Championship, or not even worrying about the playoffs and re-tooling.
The in between zone is just a waste.
Yep, it was a very interesting interview until that little gem.
As soon as someone drops a political bomb, I just want to tune out.
I'm new here and I just wanted to say that I love the clinical break down of the teams. Very cool feature.
My Twins look anemic so far, and it shows here.
Exactly. I just keep Meche in.
Bingo. An average team with a lot of variables.
That is the way hockey polices itself.
Personally, I think that might be the only way it changes. I hate the idea of anyone getting injured that way though.
