Sorry if I missed this, but where would Machado be? I know 5 star as a SS, but where would he rank within the 5 star 3B's? Thanks
I'm surprised you don't mention <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=49775">Dellin Betances</a></span> value- I know he's still a set-up man, but he's one (very possible) trade away from becoming the closer in the Bronx. I'm psyched that I was just able to pick him up.
Mike- based on this (or other factors) I'd love to know who you feel will bounce back in the 2nd half (and therefore make good trade targets). Another column perhaps?
Love this column every week. For some perspective, would you pick Hundley or Grandal? Valencia or Baez this year? Thanks JJ
Thanks Bret. How much playing time do you expect Martin and Saunders to get? Full-time?
wondering the same thing
Picked up Bartolo, but now I see that CBS has him down to pitch on 9/23. Is that right?
JJ, how would you rank Gausman, <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Brett+Anderson">Brett Anderson</a></span> and Corbin? Thanks
Mike- Piscotty or Duda ROS?
Wilson, I agree the K's are nice, but Karns has given up a lot of hits recently (not to mention 7 runs last time out). How much of that do you attribute to the high <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=BABIP" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('BABIP'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">BABIP</span></a>?
JJ, can you comment a little more on Olivera? I'm just not sure how he will see enough playing time to warrant the top spot here.
I know, Howard is long past his prime, but with Duda & Seagar (not to mention <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Ryan+Zimmerman">Ryan Zimmerman</a></span> & <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Chris+Davis">Chris Davis</a></span>) all struggling, I picked him up while he was hot. Now they're all killing me. Thanks Mike
Hey Mike, looking to drop one of my corners between Seagar, Howard and Duda. Which one would you let loose?
I'm still hoping they switch him back to short someday. Is that just wishful thinking at this point?
This all makes sense Jeff, but the problem I always have is other owners who either don't respond at all to requests or flat out reject a trade without any comment. Tough to get any dialogue going in either case. How do you counteract that?
Hey guys, can you rank Moreland, <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=37145">Ryan Howard</a></span> and M Franco for me? Thanks
Bret, I'm having trouble gauging <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=100502">Carlos Correa</a></span>'s value for this year. How would you compare Correa to say <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=40963">Jhonny Peralta</a></span> or <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=51421">Alexei Ramirez</a></span> the ROS once he gets called up? Thanks
Feeling any different about Teheran after last nights performance? 1 start, but he seemed to get his groove back.
I actually meant Rodon, but somehow Brett knew that. He's just that amazing!
Bret, how would you rank <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=99874">Andrew Heaney</a></span> compared to say <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Chris+Young">Chris Young</a></span>, Karns and Rondon? Thanks
Would you drop Feliz to pick up Ziegler?
according to MLB.com they're going to a closer by committee
seriously? where did you hear that?
Would you drop Cishek to pickup Ramos? He's really killed me.
I had no idea <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/player_search.php?search_name=Chris+Young">Chris Young</a></span> was off to such a good start. I just picked him up, thanks. To make room for him I dropped a Yankee outfielder who was off to a hot start but just hasn't been getting the <span class="statdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=AB" onmouseover="doTooltip(event, jpfl_getStat('AB'))" onmouseout="hideTip()">AB</span></a>'s lately. Yes, I dropped Chris Young to pickup Chris Young.
Got to find a reason, reason things went wrong, got to find a reason why Wade Miley's all gone
Wilson, I have a swing spot where I can start Fister of <span class="playerdef"><a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/card.php?id=55725">Steve Cishek</a></span>. Both have been a little rocky lately. Any preference? This early in the season I could obviously use both saves and wins. Thanks
Matt, can you comment on the situation in the Bronx? Thanks
Wilson, I didn't see the Sox opener, why didn't Napoli get the start? That can't bode well for playing time. Was it just an NL park thing?
Doug, I'm a little confused, is <a href="http://www.baseballprospectus.com/column/fantasy_rounders/">Fantasy Rounders</a> a new column that you'll be doing daily? If so, great idea and not just because I was about to suggest it.
minor question- when did BJ start going by Melvin? I missed that.
Fun stuff. Haven't seen Tulo being drafted too high though, what's his ADP?
Ben, where would Soria rank for you assuming he takes over as closer?
JP- perhaps you could do some research on the "Cardinals Devil Magic". That would be an interesting article.
Ah, missed that at first. Thanks for clarifying.
I'm confused, if "David Ortiz hasn’t even played double-digit games at first since 2006", why is he included as a first basemen then?
I like this idea Wilson. One thing I'm wondering though is this- these rankings were based on a 2 catcher league. Would there be any adjustments for a 1 catcher league? Thanks
sounds great, thanks for clarifying
By your comment does that mean that these rankings are a composite of the fantasy team? and it's the narrative that is yours?
Mike- Jeff was kind of high on McCann yesterday. What are your thoughts on him for this year?
Wilson, this is the last week, no? I appreciate this column and have used it all year. Thanks a lot.
CBS has Chris Tilman with 2 starts next week, are they right? If so, would you start him over 1 start from Shields, Kluber and Kennedy? I need W's and K's right now. Thanks
I'm guessing Lance Lynn should be a start, yes?
Nice work Rocco
Bret, would you take Fowler over Drew Stubbs? How about over Josh Reddick if you wanted some average and steals? Thanks
Mike, the player I keep hearing tied to trade rumors with the Yanks is Ian Kennedy. His value would have to go down though if he's traded most places though right?
Wilson, can you give a few words on Porcello? He's my only possible 2 start guy. Thanks, appreciate it,
Thinking of going with Joe Smith and McGee for the 2nd half (both pick-ups inspired by you) and trying to sell K-ROd and Steve Cishek. What do you think of that strategy?
Thanks Ben and good luck.
JP, do you like Odorizzi anymore than say Kuroda, Gausman or Porcello for this year? Thanks
I'm not feeling good about Shields next week as he's been very hittable over the past5 weeks or so. If he's an auto-start I guess that means you still have confidence in him? Any concerns going forward?
Wilson, can you give me a few thoughts on Niece this week? I have to decide between 2 road starts for him or 1 home for Ian Kennedy. Thanks
Bret, assuming Heaney was to make the bigs tomorrow, how would you rank the following ROS: Heaney, Niece, Kuroda and Ian Kennedy? Thanks
Gerrit Cole is a 2 start "start" next week right? And would you start Kuroda over any of these 1 start guys- Hamels @ CIN, Kluber vs BOS or Fister vs PHI? Thanks Wilson
Can you comment a little on Fister? And would you start him over a 1 start James Shields (LA), Cole Hamels(@MIA) or Gerrit Cole (WAS)? If so, which one gets the seat? Thanks WIlson.
I don't really have much dead weight on my bench, would you drop Venable to stash Polanco? And just to make sure I have this right- if the organization is planning on locking up a youngster by buying out their arbitration years early, then they're not concerned with service time/super 2 status. Is that correct?
How did this remark get censored? I think we're being a little overly sensitive here.
I have to replace Nova. Who do you guys like more- Niece or Eovaldi? Thanks
If Machado switches to SS (as expected), where would his future rank compared to these guys?
Ah, forgot about this column. Love it though. Very helpful.
Great series. Thanks guys.
Bret, can you clear up for me the difference between Dynasty leagues and regular keeper leagues? I know that dynasty rosters are bigger and carry a lot more minor leaguers, but I'm not sure how those players factor in. Thanks
Can't believe it's come to this, but would you start Ubaldo over 1 start from Wainwright? He's been killing me and I could use some k's without destroying my ERA and WHIP. Thanks
I wasn't aware Mujica was injured. Can you tell me more about it? Thanks
Mike- what's keeping Mujica from your top tier? I just traded for him thinking he's been money.
SSS I know, but does Strops meltdown last night (5 ER in 0.1 INN) change your ranking any?
Bret, would you start Eraser in a 2 start week over a 1 start Liriano or Jarrod Parker? If not, I can't rationalize continuing to own him. Thanks,
Wow. Holy snarkness. Excuse me for seeing Bret's name and mixing up prospect list and stash list! Just totally inexcusable I guess.
Ownership under 20%, still in the minors- where die Erasmo go? Maybe I'm missing him somewhere.
Love these lists Bret, but it seems you've changed your thinking a bit on this one, no longer giving more weight to the guys who might be called up sooner. I mean some of these guys sound like they'll be great, but even in a 5 or 6 keeper league I couldn't hold on to someone who hasn't even had his first MLB game by the end of this season. In which case, what use would someone like Buxton be to me? Follow?
Bret, How does Erasmo compare to Kluber? And would you start either one of them over Liriano or Parker with the right match-up? How about owning over Cobb? Thanks a lot.
Bret- How would Erasmo rank compared to Liriano or Jarod Parker? I also have Matt Moore who has been terrible over the past month. Thanks
Arencebia's been killing me as you mentioned. Going forward do you like him, Salty or Mike Zunino? Thanks
If Zunino gets promoted, would you play him over Arancebia? Thanks Bret.
Would you start the 2 start Liriano over Cobb or Anibal Sanchez? If so, who gets benched? I'm leaning Sanchez coming off a rough outing.
Great. Thanks Mike
Paul- would you start Teheran over a 1 start Cobb or Liriano next week?
Nice addition Mike. So you're rankings are based on earnings thus far. If you had to project the rest of the year, how would you rank Grilli, Jannsen and Soriano? I'm looking to trade one of them. Thanks.
Nice article Mike. I remember chasing several of these players (Schafer, LaRoach, Rasmus among others). I think you mean $4 for the immortal Scott Elbert though.
Paul, how would you rank Hector Santiago, Liriano and Jason Vargas? Thanks
Love the Stash List Bret. Gotta question- would you take Liriano or any of these other pitchers over Beckett, Halladay (who is killing me) or Jarrod Parker who has been such a disappointment that he's on my bench for this 2 start week?
Keep forgetting to get my question in to the column, hopefully I can get some response here- I have the disappointing Jarrod Parker and Niese as part of my rotation. Would you dump either of them for one of these guys available on waivers- Beckett, Brett Anderson or Liriano? Thanks guys, Dan
Just to be clear- those 4 graduated because their ownership levels went above 25% correct? Thanks
With a bench of Lawrie, Machado, Hosmer and Jarod Parker I'm not sure I have room for any of these guys, but I love the concept of this article. Thanks.
Paul- I need a 2nd baseman to replace Hill. I was going to go with Infante or Betancourt, but now you have me thinking Kelly Johnson. Who would you go with of the 3? Thanks
Paul, lets say Jeter does lose a few months this year- does Nunez get all the playing time and where would he rank on this list? Thanks, Dan
Actually Joe, when I tried contacting several writers via the website to get a few different opinions, I was contacted by your customer service and told that your staff was working on getting content together "so they have such limited availability right now" and that I should submit questions via the twitter (which I find too limiting) or via a chat (which I had but there not always picked). So excuse me if I seem a little annoyed by the overall quality of the product this year.
Joe- I know you received a lot of feedback yesterday, but I'm sorry, you still seem to be missing the main point being made- the tier rankings are important to a great many of us and are coming out too late. I realize that you "don't know everyone's draft dates" as you told a reader in yesterday's comments, but, with the season set to open next weekend, it's reasonable to assume that most drafts happen by this weekend. No? I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, but the top 15 lists are not enough. The PFM, while very interesting, does not jibe at all with my rankings (much less BP's). I understand you want to put out interesting content on a daily basis, but you'd avoid a lot of headaches for the both of us if you just swallowed your pride and decided to put out the rest of the tiers in the next day or 2. I think this is realistic as it doesn't fall to one person and the content is probably already done. If you decide not to do that, I love the suggestion of a reader survey for next year.
Been really looking forward to these rankings. Any chance you roll a few out at a time? Drafting this week. Thanks,
Josh, any idea on how Bumgarner's velo looks so far this spring? Any chance of an update in the next 2 weeks on some of these players? Thanks, Dan
If Danks is picking up where he left off in 2011 why is he so low? Your write-ups are pretty positive on Seatle pitchers, but how much do you think they'll be hurt by the fences moving in?
Wainwright has looked pretty bad lately. Can you say something reassuring about him that makes him an auto-start? Thanks
Dan- why is there even any uncertainty about how the Reds will handle their closer situation? Has Chapman not cemented himself in the job?
Also happy to see Vargas stay put in Safeco & Betancourt keep his closer gig.
Nice article Russell.
I'm sorry, but after getting burned really bad by Lester a couple of weeks ago (17 runs in 1 week right after I traded for him!!) I need some reassuring. Can you write a few words on him? Thanks
As a reader of this column I picked up Benoit a few weeks ago, but it just doesn't look like Papa Grande is going to lose his job (he does have the nickname and all). Who do you like more to actually take over their closer role though: Benoit or Pedro Strop (Holland is already gone)?
Did you forget Francisco Liriano or am I missing that somewhere?
Paul's comments making Lester and auto-start 2 weeks ago lead me to trade Matt Moore for him. 17 earned runs later my season may be swamped. Nice article Jason, but I have little confidence that a guy like Lester can "stop his bull-headed" ways. Seems like yet another stubborn Boston pitcher to me.
I think it's time for you to talk to someone about your Liriano issues. Your "resolve" has influenced me to bench him during some great starts.
Paul- I'm guessing that Michael Fiers gets 2 starts next week. If so, where would you place him?
Jason, I've been thinking about picking up Johnson for a while as I'm not thrilled with Cozart. How would you rank Johnson, Cozart and Drew (could get him off waivers), for the rest of the season?
Nice stuff CalledStrike3
Enjoyed the article Matthew. I'm a Yankee fan who married a big Sox fan from Boston. A mixed marriage if you will. To keep the peace we've decided to raise our kids Mets fans.
Paul, I share your pain about Bucholtz. I also have Vargas, Paulino, Moore and D Hudson (can you tell I'm a BP reader?) Surprised you have Vargas & Hudson as starts. Both have looked pretty bad. Paulino didn't look good in his last rehab start either, but I guess that doesn't matter now that he may be out for the year. How many of the following 1 start pitchers would you play over them next week- AJ Burnett, Cliff Lee or the heretofore mentioned Bucholtz? Thanks,
Josh, how would you rank Cozart, Drew (once healthy) and Scutaro? Thanks
Would you rank Cobb ahead of any of the following:
- D Hudson
If so whom? Might have to drop someone to pick him up, but I'm not convinced after his last start.
I'm confused, why can't you just drop Soto and replace him. Surely there must be someone better available off waivers as he's been dreadful.
Paul- do you like Bass more than Volquez?
Paul- do you feel confident enough in Paulino that you'd drop Jimmenez? I keep hoping he turns it around, but he's killing me.
Paul- would you consider dropping Ubaldo Jimenez to pick up Ted Lilly at this point? I'm reluctant since I picked him with my 4th round pick in a keeper league.
Paul, who do you like more as a pick-up: Volquez or Lilly?
Have to agree with the comment above about the timeline. Still have 1 more draft to go though. Any chance you could put out a combined list of OF's (I imagine AL OF's are next). And maybe pitchers too? Much appreciated.
Have you commented on a little player named Ryan Braun yet? If so, haven't seen it and I'm wondering what you think of his keeper potential now with the suspension.
My league trading deadline is tomorrow (and can't imagine most leagues go much later if at all). Any chance you'll come out with another one of these column's by then? Maybe OF or Pitching? Love em, thanks.
I have grown so tired of Wright in my keeper league that I finally traded him. I needed some K's and wins so I traded him for Haren. How does that trade measure in terms of value swap?
Also playing Kotchman at corner but can pick up Carp off the waiver. If I read this correctly you feel that Carp has more value over the rest of the season, yes?
And who will be picking up the pitching Weekly Planner column? That was helpful.
any word on Justin Upton yet? thanks
And who is your guess as to who takes over for Rauch? Frank Francisco?
Do you think the Royals calling up some kids to the bigs will help or hurt their defense (and Paulino's chances)? Called up Giavotella yesterday.
What are your thoughts on Clint Barmes? Needed a SS and Bartlett wasn't available. He's been decent over the past month and picked up 3 hits in his debut for me last night
A Richie Sexson comp for Berkman? Ouch! Would you try to trade Fat Elvis if you owned him in fantasy?
Derek, nice article. Do you like E5 over Ty Wiggington or Casey Kotchman? Both have filled in nicely for me.
Would a trip to the DL for Braun really take care of it "once and for all" or would you worry about it lingering?
2 stolen bases yesterday, another one tonight. I'm pretty happy with my pick-up of Revere actually.
Craig, would you start Matusz over any of my 1 start guys: Gallardo, Hamels, Kershaw or Latos? Thanks, Dan
Just reading this now that I'm home from work. Wow, I feel like I was just dumped unexpectedly by my girlfriend! Just didn't see hit coming. Marc's articles were always the first thing I read since Will left. Love your work Marc and appreciate all the fantasy advice. Sure hope BP has some plans to fill the tremendous void.
Michael, what was Javi's velocity in his last start?
Okay, so you couldn't get a picture of guys like Soriano or Jones in a Yankee hat yet, but CC? AJ Burnett? Granderson, Teixeira, Swisher, etc. C'mon.
Marc, love these rankings. Very helpful. Just wondering if there is any plan to adjust your rankings at all once the 70th and/or 90th percentiles come out as you often allude to them.
Also, is it me or does the pitching seem pretty deep this year? I just wouldn't mind having a bunch of 2 and 3 star guys on my staff and is making me think I might want to focus on other areas first. Thanks,
Marc, will you be adjusting any of your rankings once the upper level projections come out?
how bout CJ Wilson?
Hey Marc, glad you're making upgrades to the fantasy component. Have a question about the depth charts though. Do you guys ever update it or does it stay the same from the beginning of the season? I was thinking of picking up Arias (since I have Kinsler) and wanted to know where he bats in the lineup. Unfortunately you still have Kinsler in the spot with Arias as his second backup.
Mark- love this idea for a column and hope you keep it up for a while (ie buy low/sell high candidates. Thanks
Clay, the PFM still seems way out of wack. I was trying to use it the other night and it came up with Julio Borbon ahead of Pujols. Pujols!? Maglio Ordonez at #12 overall? Matsui in the top 20. Am I doing something wrong? This doesn't jive at all with my rankings (or Mark's for that matter).
