Should be "Oh Captain, My Captain" Redux and I have also been skeptical of the accuracy and the importance of the range studies. I think defensive metrics have a long way to go and the sabermetrics industry has been much too accepting. Simply coming up with a metric is only half the battle, testing the metric for accuracy and usefulness is the next step.

Look no further than the emminently replacable Nyjer Morgan to indict the Pirates front office. Career 4A player for every other organization in baseball but Neal Huntington and Dan Fox have him as the most valuable outfielder in the National League because of his defense.... With McClouth in center there is some value to Nyjer in left because of McClouth's power but with McCutchen likely taking until 2011 before his power fully blooms there are going to be a lot of 5-2 losses in our future with this front office.

Will, I think this is a good decision. The market for rumors and tips is clearly saturated to the point where most rumors have lost all value. The only people who care about scoops are journalists themselves and with the blogs and the internet there is no accountability when someone is wrong.

I don\'t see how an arbitrator will declare them free agents. Correct me if I am mistaken but an arbitrator should not place the player in a \"better\" position than he was before the midnight deadline. The only choices on its face for the ARB are either upholding the deal and constructing new rules for next year or declaring the deals void and opening a new negotiating window. Declaring the deals void and not allowing a new negotiating window which would in effect make the players free agents, would penalize teams for following the instructions/permissions of MLB and reward the players/agents for playing along and than experiencing buyers remorse or sandbagging. Please Mr. Boras if those past midnight extensions were so innappropriate why did you not hang the phone up at the stroke of 12?
