This is my early choice for Best of BP 2011.
Does Twins OF Joe Benson show any hints whatsoever at being able to overcome his strikeout woes?
Any defensive benefits of an outfield containing Revere and Span? Think it'd be worth the offensive drawbacks for a more defensive-oriented outfield?
Don't remind poor Rany for that choice. We all fall in love with flawed prospects. Goes with the fandom.
I think it is high time we factored in brand of said tools. Toolsheds are nice, but I need to see Craftsman to really get excited.
I really shouldn't
But this is infectious
D'oh! Gone too far now.
"No matter what happens in Wieters' major league career—which should start very soon with Ramon Hernandez traded away—he can bask in the glory of what was arguably the best minor league performance of the last 40 years."
That was from the BP 2009 annual. I think having the type of minor league resume Wieters possessed plus his skills as a backstop when placed next to his current major league achievements would paint the portrait of a disappointing career thus far.
I must ask: Approx. how many phone calls does it take to finalize this list?
Why sweet lord can't Branyan play on a pennant-contender? I must see Mr. TTO get legit late-season PAs.
Does Sanchez project enough for many to think he could stay as a backstop?
Are the Twin Cities a possibility? Doesn't Wyers live in Iowa?
I wrote in "Letting Buck & McCarver cover the playoffs" for #18.
I'm worried Blyleven won't get the votes to be inducted. If he doesn't, do you think the Veterans Committee would be sympathetic to getting him in the HOF?
Well, I guess Tony, Jr. has his rap persona pre-determined when he's finally done killing rallies with his bat.
Wow, what an awesome article. Just showed how little I know about it and splitters.
Also, will someone please bring back the eephus? Not enough wacky off-speed pitches thrown.
Only four days? You guys deserve more. Heck, a Rule 5 preview and I'm good 'til the annual comes out. Enjoy yourselves.
Wow. As if we weren't high enough on Oakland pitching. The walk rates look fantastic, wonder how rate stats translate. If all the A's get is an above-average innings muncher, he'd shore up the back end of a devastating rotation.
Beane's going aggressive early this offseason, I'm impressed.
Wow, what a great idea. I hope the Chicagoland league explodes and spreads across the country. Let's hope the clinic excites girls on baseball.
Am I crazy to think Posey is worthy of some, not necessarily many, NL MVP votes?
I know nothing of indie rock, so thanks for the introduction to Shellac. I'm quite intrigued.
Saw this guy in Vancouver last year. Through 12 games his OBP was nearly 300 pts higher than his average. Reminded me of former Dodger 1B Cory Dunlap.
I knew Lee had his struggles of late but never thought it was that bad. Nice article, Jesse.
Is SS Mier viewed as a solution in the near-term, or is his development too slow?
I think every single AL team needs to try to get this guy signed. I'd personally, however, like to see him in Pittsburgh and using that short right field porch to amplify that HR total. I'm thinking 604 home runs for his career, with 36 in 2011 and 41 in 2012.
Contracts on achieving 10,000 articles penned/typed/whatever.
Now, can you stick it out for 40,000 more?
Well-reasoned and informative. Makes one wonder why any age/years after high school stipulations exist in any sport.
Wow, that was something beyond awesome. Great work, Colin, you had me in stitches.
My therapist only accepts American Express. You got?
If Jeter can only muster an OPS around .700-.730, it will sure he hard to justify him in a lineup in the dangerous AL East. I just don't see a right answer for the Yankees this offseason.
Having value on a roster is one thing, and being a contributing member of a championship-caliber roster is quite another. I doubt Bloomquist qualifies for the latter.
I have no scale of knowing what Jason might be going through in his personal life right now, nor are the details of any one's business but whoever he chooses to confide with, but I'm pulling for him; we all are.
Murray Chass is a Grouchy Dolt & Other Observations.
Holy improbable, Batman! This feels like the kind of crazed, star-studded trade I'd pull off in MLB 09 The Show videogame, not occur in real life. What compels multiple teams to trade for/away front-end starters AND coveted prospects?
If you see Jon Heyman, bash him over the head for all of us for his immature Twittering about NL Cy Young voting. Maybe we can get Colbert to put Heyman on his "On Notice" or "Dead to Me" lists.
I'm destined to become an alcoholic as the legacy of that pitiful trade for the Twins grows over the years, unless of course the Mets continue to squander his very goodness and don't win with him.
Let's see what that idiot at Lone Star Ball thinks of the "high quality arm" being Neftali Feliz, because that's the only way this deal comes anywhere near reality.
How about Jeff Francoeur for cash considerations and a hug, because the Mets need consoling over the Yankees World Series victory.
Wow. After reading the plot synopsis of that Picoult book on Wikipedia, I can say that that ending is the putrid. As an English major I am insulted that this woman is allowed to publish.
I like the way you think/hate Joe Morgan's voice with a fiery passion, David.
I realize I'm saying the obvious but why would a very high OBP guy like Morgan was during his career not give a damn about taking a walk, especially when my viewing of MLB Network last week showed several pitchers walking in runs in bases loaded situations?
...Maybe its not all manly to take a walk, you got to earn it with your teeth-gritted swing through the plate, even when the reliever can't put it in the zone (?)
I give up on ESPN.
I nearly peed myself laughing at this. Thanks Richard for the silliness. I am surprised there hasn't been a Senate Subcommittee hearing over the reckless nabbing of additional bases. How dare Rickey Henderson and Lou Brock be heralded for their nefarious deeds!!
I might be a homer, and he is a friend, but does Gonzaga RHP Matt Fields, leading the team in Ks and IP, have a chance at going in the first 10 rounds of the MLB Draft?
Its nice to see the redshirt Senior shining brightest when his team is at its best in years.
Is there anything I can do for Mr. Plugh to have him bring his column \"Nippon Prospectus\" more often?
I read Hillman\'s thoughts on Bloomie so late at night I thought I was hallucinating them, but unfortunately I wasn\'t.
\"He knows how to draw a walk...Not afraid to work the count\"
Bloomie? Walk machine? Wha...?
